Just As Super: 1996 Ducati 900 SS/SP

OK – so what we have here is no Superlight (reference Doug’s earlier post HERE). But in nearly all respects – other than not being yellow, not being a solo tail section, and not having those nifty, crack-prone Superlight modular wheels – this is the same. Maybe even better.

By 1995, the Ducati Super Spoort line was in need of a refresher. Ducati pulled out a 1-2 punch and introduced the ultra-affordable (for a Ducati) 900 SS/CR, and then immediately made the have-nots drool with the more expensive 900 SS / SP. The SP was really what the Superlight had been – an upscale, serial number-plated exclusive version of the base ride. Differences are few, but relatively substantial. Suspension goes from adequate to multi-adjustable – with the biggest upgrade to the Showa fork up front. Out back, the SP model gets a different swing arm (aluminum vs steel) that can accommodate a wider rear tire. A carbon front mud guard was standard, as was the rear mud guard and a carbon clutch cover. Engine, brakes, electrics, bronze colored frame and most everything else remains the same as the CR model. But the refinement – and the bragging rights – are right there in the “this is really a two seater Superlight” spec designation.

So is the 900 SS/SP really the same as a Superlight? No. It’s actually better. Whereas the aforementioned Superlight has a Buy It Now of $11,700, this pretty little 900 SS/SP – which has slightly higher miles but devoid of silly go-fast stickers – is currently sitting at only $3,450 with a couple of days to go. It is unlikely to top out above the Superlight asking price, making it the best of both worlds: numbered, rare, sought after and unique, while capable of riding two up (if that helps convince the missus) AND it’s cheaper. Whatever the deal is I’d ask for a heat gun, a plastic razor blade, some Goo Gone, isopropyl alcohol wipes and a bottle of Wizards Wax Master to aid in the prompt removal of those go fast stickers. Don’t misunderstand me- I’m a sticker guy through and through, but I never and I mean never put stickers on any painted surface. I know- to each their own!

This bike has only 9424 miles on it. In around 2018, the bike received a complete service. New tires, cam belt, valves set, rebuilt carbs, new battery, new fuel pump, changed all fluids. Was tested and then the fuel tank was drained along with the carbs. It was set for storage in climate controlled storage until fall of 2021. The bike received new Interstate battery, change oil & filter, fresh fuel & ran & driven. The tires still have the tips on them.


 

The bike was made to look like the Fast By Ferracci bike of that time. There is a scratch on right silencer. The bike looks to have been tipped over as there are small paint touch up on the left & right lower & upper fairings. The rear seat cowl does have small cracks around the seat mounts as they all do if anyone sat on them.

This Ducati has a K & N air filter & the air box has been modified. The rear sprocket has been changed, but comes with the original. It comes with a set of Carbon Fiber exhaust silencers and a Corbin seat.

I recommend an inspection to make sure this is the bike for you and you know what you will be receiving.

You are welcome to come view the Ducati Suplerlight or even have someone else inspect it.

I can email more pictures of the Ducati. I have many with the body panels off as well as close detail pictures. And I have a quick video of it being ridden.

All things considered, I think this Superlight presents very well. I’d like to see a close up of the scratches from the tip over, but the seller is open to pre-buying inspections. I checked the RSBFS.com way back time machine and the asking price on this one is about the same as they were 15 years ago. In my feeble mind- that seems like a pretty good deal!

Bit by Bit – 1991 Ducati 907 I.E. Paso

The 907 I.E. is the most sorted of the Paso line, almost a transformation of the earlier 750’s.  Today’s Paso is a California native wearing paint seeming newer than what lies beneath, but looks like a good first sportbike.

Last-gen Paso’s were finally water cooled and fuel-injected, better suited for Tamburini’s enclosed bodywork design than air cooling and carburetors.  Weber electronic injection stretches out the power band for the hydraulic dry clutch and 6-speed.  Some reviewers hold that the chassis geometry on the earlier Paso’s was better, but the handling and convenience of a pair of 17-inch wheels are part of the I.E. package.  Ducati’s tough square-tube chassis is under the soap bar, with Marzocchi multi-adjustable anti-dive forks and monoshock.

Beside a quick repair on the near side mirror, the bright re-paint on this 907 I.E. would be helped by some factory decals, which shouldn’t be hard to source.  Then presuming no mechanical show-stoppers, the new owner could fix a little and ride a little – refinish the GPR mufflers, get the Corbin re-covered, new sprockets and chain, powdercoat the wheels, etc.  Could be a sharp example in no time.  Short comments from the eBay auction:

The Paso was tasked with fending off the imported competition, and it had plenty of character, but at a slightly premium price.  Some years over a thousand were sold, but not always.  The neat complete fairing had its fans, but the company got busy with development of the 916, Supersport and Monster, closing the Paso line in 1992.  For sure a rarity at this point, and an important Ducati with sport touring, a more modern engine, and Tamburini design in its gene pool.  Hopefully the reserve will keep newcomers in mind.

More M than XL – 1984 Ducati 350XL in England

No superbike aspirations, but trying to fly the brand’s flag in developing markets, Ducati’s 350XL was strictly for more carefully licensed countries.  This one has some km’s but the 350 desmo shows very nicely.

The 349cc two-valver was a 600 Pantah re-cylindered for under 21 ridership, but with 10.4-to-1 compression, Dell’Orto carbs and 40 hp.  Adapted from its big brothers were the 5-speed, dual Brembo disks, Paoli suspension, and more than a fairing’s worth of bodywork.  With lightly raised handlebars, the riding position was multi-purpose, and the bar-mounted fairing gave some protection.

Maybe not restored, but this 350 is awfully clean, with polished cases and forks.  Km’s or miles, 44,555 seems way too many for the condition.  Might need a few things but nothing very exotic here, though hard parts might take some research.  Comments from the eBay auction:

As a downsized middleweight, the 350XL carried extra pounds that it couldn’t shed, and gave away market share to pure-bred small sports.  Sidecovers that hid the vertical cylinder were stylish, though compromised the brand’s sporting cachet.  Likely just for a fan with a garage-ful of red bikes, this one might occupy a niche.  And except for shipping, this one’s a can’t bust a hole in the budget and might really be a crowd pleaser on bike night.

Even by Ducati’s impressive standards for special editions and factory customs, the 2006 Ducati PS1000LE is a masterstroke. It is, in a way, a special edition within a special edition, as it prowled showrooms at the same time as the Ducati Sport Classic line, which kicked off a wave of retro-look machines that has yet to crest.

The PS1000LE was extra special for Duc, as it celebrated Paul Smart’s historic win at the 1972 Imola 200 aboard a 750SS. The paint scheme apes Smart’s machine, and Ducati had Pierre Terblance pen the neoclassic machine to pay exacting tribute.

The exposed trellis frame, toaster tank, bulbous rear cowl and dustbin-style bikini fairing are brilliant touches. Under all that pretty is a 992 cc L-twin that put out just south of 100 horsepower. Never designed as an out-and-out rocket, the PS is still no slouch, as the torquey mill has less than 400 pounds to shove around. It’s all kept rubberside down by adjustable Ohlins front and rear.

I have owned this rare beauty since new. The Termignoni full exhaust system sound is music and the best sounding bike in my collection. Other mods are a Ducati performance racing ECU, open clutch cover, dark shield and clear belt covers and carbon fiber hugger. Original parts will go with the bike with the exception of the original exhaust. Included are two black keys, one red key & key Code Card as well as the Ducati owner’s manual. I have every receipt since it was purchased and it has only been serviced by authorized Ducati dealers. The bike also comes with the Ducati tank cover and tank bag.
These bikes were only made one year and they were limited to 2000 units. This bike was made as a tribute to Paul Smarts win at Imola 200 in 1972 which jump started Ducatis racing successes. The popularity of the limited production bikes led to the popular Sport Classic series.
The bike is a 992cc air cooled Desmodromic 2-valve L twin with 92 HP @ 6,000 RPM and a claimed 399 pounds day with a fuel capacity of 4 gallons with a top speed of 129 MPH.

These Paul Smart bikes will only go up in value, and while this one might not have the stock exhaust, it is priced to reflect that and is a beautiful example of a timeless bike.

If you’ve already got Ducati fatigue from the past couple weeks, scroll right on past today’s Featured Listing, this Ducati Elite 200. Or, if you didn’t realize that Ducati had a life before their big, booming superbike line existed, go ahead and read on. In fact, they didn’t even make a regular production multi until the introduction of the v-twin 750 in the early 1970s: their Cucciolo, the original Ducati, was actually a small, four-stroke engine designed to motorize a bicycle. Humble beginnings for a company whose name is synonymous with Italian exotica today.

Later machines used their light weight and handling to win victories in smaller racing classes. Fabio Taglioni designed their first overhead-cam engine, which eventually developed into the machine seen here that was introduced in 1958. The Elite displaced 204cc and used a four-speed gearbox with the heel-toe shifter that was characteristic of the era. The 18 horses and light weight meant a top speed of nearly 90mph, an impressive velocity for such a small motorcycle.

The distinctive candy-red “jelly mould” tank with mirror-like chrome details and Ducati wing logo, complete with mounting loops, to the copper-colored frame and amazing details like the “DUCATI” molded into the peg rubbers, headlight bucket-mounted speedometer, and tapered shotgun exhaust, it’s a surprise to me that they haven’t built a retro-styled model that references this bike yet. Even a Scrambler variant painted to match this might work, combining modern performance with classic style and colors…

From the Seller: 1959 Ducati Elite 200 for Sale

This is a rare, award winning piece of Motorcycle art. This bike was previously in a museum and is also an Antique Automobile Club of America winner “National First Prize”. The bike was purchased from Vicki Smith in 2013 who is well know among Ducatista. Apparently the bike was first purchased in Italy. I probably never rode the bike more than 20 miles and it was then properly put back into Museum mode by Revival Cycles in Austin and has complimented the other bikes in my house. I have all the receipts that came with the bikes and everyone since. The key in the headlight is one of my favorite things and the bike also comes with a Ducati tire pump. The one into two exhaust is rare and motorcycle art. This is the price I paid in 2013 and is more valuable and rare today.

The seller is asking $18,500 for this very nice example of an appreciating classic. The bike isn’t perfect, but the paint looks amazing, it has great patina, and it comes with documentation and should certainly continue to appreciate. It’s a shame that most of these end up sitting in collections, since they’re apparently great to ride and would be lots of fun on a casual Sunday morning ride, or a great choice for a classic rally like the Motogiro.

Sunnyside – 1995 Ducati 900SS

The bright courtyard pictures of this 900SS must’ve been taken last fall, because at 6,349 ft., it’s a bit wintry in Santa Fe. But a little warmth awaits the new owner when the truck drops off this very nice Supersport.

In the days before the Monster and Multi, Ducati’s Supersport was the do-all bike – built sporty but comfortable enough to take on a commute or weekend.  Air cooled and with belt-driven cams, the 904cc desmodue made 84 hp via 38mm Mikuni carbs and a dry clutch.  Showa supplied the inverted fork and adjustable monoshock, and Brembo the 320 mm brakes.  Dry weight was right around 400 lbs. even with the full fairing.

Never seeming to have been fawned over, this 900SS looks very good and just a few rubs interrupt the flow.  Termignoni mufflers and Superlight monoposto seem to be the majority of the mods.  The seat cover is a little crispy but could easily be re-covered or Sargent-ized.  Comments from the eBay auction:

Very nice example with patina from regular use as expected of a 27 year old bike. 

Looks and sounds fantastic. Pulls strong. No smoking or obvious mechanical wear.
Belts replace 4 years ago but have only ridden about 1500 miles since then.
Tires are virtually new having been installed a year ago and have only about 400 miles on them max.

Battery always on a tender and is strong.

With nothing aboard that isn’t required, even lunch on a 900SS will require a backpack.  And though the handling won raves, U-turns with the chassis geometry can be a dab-fest.  But if a splash and a snack are available at the turn-around point, then the 90’s SS can be a grand day out.  The example gives up SP credentials and static display perfection for a very sensible starting bid and a not-bad buy-it-now.

First Year Monster: 1994 Ducati M900

Ducati invites thoughts of MotoGP and race winning performance.  An exotic machine to tickle the senses, and ignite passion.  Their superbikes have long been lust worthy machines.  But for many the most iconic modern offering from Ducati has been their Monster line.  This bike started the naked bike category and has offered many riders a very usable and enjoyable package for decades.

This example appears to be well taken care of over the years and regularly used.  A purest might want to revert a few small details to stock, such as the mirrors, but few would toss a red flag at the addition of aftermarket carbon exhausts as the sound will justify the change.  Pictures show that the bike could benefit from a proper wash and detail.

From The Seller’s eBay Listing:

1994 Ducati M900. This is the first generation Monster and was manufactured in July 1993. I am the second owner and purchased this bike from the original owner in the fall of 2009. This has been an incredibly reliable bike for me and has been a joy to own and ride. The dry clutch discs were replaced within the last 500 miles, tires were replaced around 500 miles ago and I would estimate still have most of their life left. Belts were replaced last year and have almost no miles on them. Front and rear brake pad were also replaced last year and have almost no miles on them as well. Oil was changed two years ago but less than 250 miles currently on it. Carbon exhaust is D&D, rear fender and master cylinder covers are Ferracci. Bike was apparently maintained at Ferracci by the last owner; I have since maintained on my own utilizing the Desmo Times 2V service and maintenance book. Bike is due for a dealer valve service, but does still run near perfect and has significant power; last owner had the valves checked and no adjustments were needed at the time (circa 2008). Slight adjustment may be needed now, but I’d be surprised. The engine does smoke slightly, which could be due to the limited miles put on it over the last ~8 years (<1000). The head was pulled from the horizontal cylinder in 2010 to replace leaky seals (no leaks since) and the vertical cylinder now shows a similar leak between the head and the cylinder (likely from the 28yo o-rings degrading). The rear seat cover has a small crack in it, as shown in the pictures, and the tank has a small chip as well, also shown in the picture. Tank is in otherwise near perfect condition and does not have the typical “Monster dent” that the older metal Monster’s are generally found with. Overall, this Monster is a head turner as it’s in excellent condition, has the excellent deep Ducati rumble, and the classic Ducati dry clutch sound. Feel free to reach out with questions prior to bidding.

As with any first year example, there are little details that make all the difference.  These seemingly small details are what make the bike special.  Stuff like the yellow swingarm bar, and rectangle master cylinders.  A true Ducati fan could nerd out for a while with all the subtle differences over the years.  It is wonderful to see an example preserved and not cut up, modified or left unloved.

The opening bid of $3,999 is sure to be placed in the near future.  One could expect the bidding to climb over time as this is a really unique and desirable motorcycle.  Presented well with few unwanted modifications.  Mileage will mean this will not appeal to a static collector, but should offer many more worry free miles to the next owner.
