Another Era: 1982 Honda CBX Supersport

History will show that Benelli – not Honda – produced the first factory six-cylinder motorcycle, the 750cc Sei. However the riding public will likely not care who was first, and will always look at the Honda CBX as an engineering marvel, which it really is. And while the original 1978 CBX was a bare-knuckle brawler in its naked form, it is the post-1981 sport touring version we are highlighting here. This 1982 Honda CBX is the final model year of the breed, and represents an excellent example of the beauty and complexity of the model.

The heart of the CBX was – and will ever be – the giant 1,047cc transverse cylinder inline six. The 24 valves are operated by double overhead cams, fed upstream by a brace of six Keihin carbs. Although the engine looks impossibly wide, Honda invested considerable effort in consolidating typical end of crankshaft items such as ignition and alternator behind the bank of cylinders. This kept the overall width only slightly wider than conventional fours. The original naked CBX enjoyed a robust 105 HP or more when introduced, but the shift to sport touring in 1981 saw a modification to the power delivery, and ultimately a drop in top end output by 5-7 HP. This was balanced by an increase in weight due to the additional bodywork, frame modifications, and color keyed hard bags. On the plus side, Honda introduced their air-assisted Pro-Link rear suspension linkage in place of the original pair of rear shocks, as well as larger front fork tubes to aid in handling.

Honda’s engineers and management liked the appeal and sound of the six-cylinder they produced. Some have compared it to old-school Formula 1 car exhaust. It also let the Honda CBX top out at 135 mph, Which made it the fastest production motorcycle in the world. 1981 saw the Honda CBX go from a standard into a sports tourer motorcycle. The resulting Honda CBX 1000 SuperSport came with extensive wind fairing, hard-sided saddlebags, and an adjustable rear mono-shock. It also had upgraded brakes, with new calipers and, in front, ventilated dual discs. The front fork was also adjustable, using a special air pump that came with the bike. In terms of straight-line speed and engineering complexity, the Honda CBX was a superbike. While the six-cylinder wasn’t exactly fuel-efficient, it was extremely smooth and sounded great – Especially with the Denco 6 into 6 ‘Ferrari’ sounding Exhaust. Jay Leno bought a 1981 example brand-new, and still owns and enjoys riding it, today. — DETAILS — This is my 6th CBX and I love them, I changed out the front turn signals, custom windscreen, custom turn signals and 6 into 6 Denco Exhaust. From a collector perspective the original naked model still holds a financial edge by the latest auction outcomes. However at some point the NOS bodywork will disappear, flipping the supply-vs-demand equation and elevating well-kept later models to a higher price point. We have not seen that yet, but if I had a dollar for every time I hear “I remember when you could buy a for next to nothing!” I could afford one of these mega-buck collector bikes. The market for the fully-faired CBX has not hit crazy heights as of yet, so if six is your lucky number now might be the time to act. This one looks to be complete, but the seller cautions that it has been sitting. There is only a single $5k bid at time of writing with reserve still in place. Check out all of the details here. Southern Belle – 1982 Honda CX500 Turbo

Hot on the heels of this 1985 Honda VFR1000R (eBay shows that it sold for $7,652), the same seller has just listed a 1982 Honda CX500 Turbo in a similar, no reserve auction. And this is the way that we like to see bikes represented – decent pictures showing a neat, clean, indoor storage facility. The bikes are clean and presentable, and not still dripping wet from a quick hose-down like some other auctions. Given, the bikes themselves might not be of the uber-rarity set (I haven’t spied a NR750 or Supermono in the pictures yet, but I’m still looking) – but they are relatively rare and special machines worthy of collecting. Which brings us to the world’s first full factory turbo offering, the 1982 Honda CX500 Turbo.

Built around the basis of the CX platform, the CX500 Turbo was a sort of Moto Guzzi replica in that the engine configuration was a vee mounted across the bike, but the crankshaft rotation was inline with the wheels. The vee angle was 80 degrees, and the cylinder head intake and exhaust tracts were rotated slightly to allow for better legroom for the rider. If you’ve ever barked your shins on a BMW airhead intake or banged your knees on Guzzi carbs you know the value of this subtle piece of engineering. The Turbo used larger main bearings in the strengthened cases, and Honda bolted up an IHI turbo capable of 200,000 RPM and 19 PSI and topped the whole thing off with their first incarnation of programmable fuel injection. A stronger crank, clutch and connecting rods held the rest of the bottom end together, along with a pair of forged pistons. Suspension, electronics and bodywork were all bespoke Turbo fittings, making for a fast, powerful and unique offering.

This is an amazing all original and very rare bike that is coming out of a private collection that is perfect for anyones collection or for anyone to enjoy. The bike runs and drives just like it should and needs nothing to my knowledge. The bike has been very well maintained and shows great for an original bike, the only thing that I can see on the entire bike is that their is a small chip/nick on one side, and I have a picture of that to show you. The only thing to my knowledge that has been changed on the bike is a aftermarket windshield has been added which is a little larger then stock. Still a great bike for anyones collection or for anyone to enjoy that is just beautiful to look at in person. And remember this is SELLING @ NO RESERVE so high bidder takes it home.

Make no mistake, the Turbo is a big bike. Ready to ride this is a nearly 600 pound motorcycle, and not for the inseam challenged. Much of the weight is carried up high, thanks to the longitudinal nature of the vee configuration, the large radiator to cool of the turbocharged madness, and a 5.2 gallon fuel tank perched way up on top of everything. Far from a lithe sport bike, the Turbo revels in sport touring, where the strong midrange rush can be used at will. The 280mm front disks are decent, and the air-assist anti dive fork does a reasonable job of keeping everything in line. But those 600 pounds are hard to hide when the road gets narrow and twisty.

As referenced earlier, we have seen this seller before. There are a lot of bikes in the background shots for his auctions, so we know this is quite the collector. This bike appears to be mostly stock, with the noted exception of the windscreen. For a rider, that may not be a bad thing as the stock windscreen tends to create significant noise and buffeting at highway speed (different shapes of helmets can offer some help). Like the previous auction, this one has started low and there is no reserve. There are a good number of bids, and a much larger number of watchers which is the way these auctions should run. Going the Distance: 1985 Honda VF1000R

The Honda VF1000R is one of those interesting bikes that always evokes emotion and usually is well received here on the pages of Rare. Originally conceived as a homologation bike for racing, the VF1000R did inspire homologation race bikes and contribute to race efforts, even though the plans to homologate it fell through. Best known for endurance racing in Europe and the gear-driven cam arrangement that found its way into the vaunted RC30, the VFR1000R stands tall with livery reminiscent of Freddy Spencer, and a raft of clever features that speak to Honda’s “engineering-first” philosophy.

While the basics of the VFR1000R motor come from the lower-spec “F” DNA, the R was developed specifically for the gear driven cam arrangement. The idea here is that geared cams can be indexed more accurately than the belt driven type, and this plays into the hands of highly-stressed, high RPM race motors. The cams themselves were nestled into an all new four-valve head, intended to increase air flow and raise compression over the F model. The result was an approximate 10 HP gain, and the potential for future development with an eye to building all-out race motors. The downside was that the added complexity added weight. The VFR1000R outweighs the commensurate 1000F by a figure similar to the HP gain, which for a race bike is not ideal.

Very Clean bike coming out of a private collection. The bike is just how you see it in the pictures, needing nothing other then a new battery to make it ready to go.

From the bulbous, all encompassing bodywork with the solo seat cowl, to the large, single headlight (only the 1986 year bikes received the Euro dual-headlamp look in the US), from the GP-inspired 16″ front wheel with quick change hardware to the adjustable Pro-link rear suspension, the modular ComStar wheels, the VF1000R was a quality piece of kit. That helped explain the nearly 50% price increase over the F model, ensuring exclusivity and dooming the R to relatively poor sales by comparison. Today these factors make this a rare model for a non-homologated, mass produced sport bike.

Today’s example is claimed to be a museum bike, and the pictures show a clean VFR1000R surrounded by Honda siblings (and a lone Suzuki XN85 Turbo). The odometer shows a low 11,0000-ish miles, and the seller claims that the bike needs nothing except a battery. The doubter in me wonders how one knows until a battery is actually installed and the bike started, but the pictures show a well-cared for example, and this era Honda has a rather bulletproof reputation overall – so I will overlook that. It might be just shadows, but I also detect possible scratches/rash on one of the fairing panels. There have been a fair number of bidders and a significant number of watchers on this one, however the auction is below $5k which is a good deal for someone if it closes like this. When you look back at the bikes you could have owned – or maybe did own, but let slip away – many will dream of the unobtainable collector machines built in small numbers and high prices. But when you look back on the bikes you could have owned to *ride*, then the list changes significantly. Gone are the torture racks, the rolling stock full of NOS parts never to be found again, or the odd and unique (but not very practical) imports. Instead you would look back at the best all around bikes in history – and come to a singular conclusion: the Honda VFR750F. Here is a bike that can do it ALL – from canyon riding and track days to touring, exploring and commuting. The VFR has long been a do everything exceptionally well type of mount. And while we can nostalgically look at some of the examples floating around the internet, the thought of somebody’s used up bike is not the stuff of dreams. Enter this stunning 1992 model VFR750F in the more rare darker VFR livery. What you are looking at is what Cycle World called “…the best all-around motorcycle in the business…” that has been refurbished to a very high specification.

The VFR series was a home run for Honda, and spawned many generations and a couple of truly interesting models. Based around a 90 degree V-4 with four valve heads, the VFR has been a constant winner in reviews, in showrooms, and at the racetrack. Even the mighty RC30 and RC45 models were derivatives of this family line, if that gives you any indication of the performance potential that was engineered into the basic bones. The 1992 model is an ideal representation of the second generation bikes, with aluminum frame and classic single sided swingarm. Expect an even 100 horsepower in stock configuration, enabling the VFR to go as well as it looks. There is enough there to keep up with all but the most berserker sport bikes in the canyons, and the best part is the cushy ride to-fro the happy sporting grounds. Pound for pound, it is difficult to imagine a bike better suited to everything we tend to do with a two wheeled device in our stables. If you could only have one bike for the rest of your riding days….

Since this is an unusual color for a VFR, I’ve started calling this one “Darth Viffer” 😊 Seems most VFR’s are red.

Up for sale is a 1992 Honda VFR750F with just over 25k miles on the clock. It is almost 100% stock and original, and includes two rare OEM accessories – the matching solo seat cowl and center stand. The bike has just undergone a thorough mechanical and cosmetic refresh, including the following that were completed before I bought it:
Fork seals/oil
Michelin Pilot Road 4 tires
New battery
New voltage regulator/rectifier

Complete carburetor overhaul – ultrasonic cleaning, new float valves, and new viton o-rings/gaskets.

New NGK spark plugs.
OEM Honda oil filter, Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic oil.

Steering head bearings replaced with tapered roller kit.
Rear suspension completely disassembled and cleaned, all bearings cleaned and greased.
Rear axle and bearings thoroughly cleaned and greased, replaced the double row ball bearing.
Replaced the chain and sprockets with OEM gearing. RK GXW chain and JT sprockets.
Complete disassembly and ultrasonic cleaning of all brake and clutch parts. Front and rear calipers, clutch slave cylinder and both brake and clutch master cylinders.
Replaced the fuel pump with a Facet electric pump (OEM pumps are obsolete). The replacement pump incorporates a check valve and shuts of fuel flow when not powered.
Rebuilt fuel petcock with a kit from NRP carbs in the UK.
All bodywork removed, cleaned and paint polished. Touched up where needed (mostly some nicks on the wheels and some scratches on the front fender).
All plastic and rubber parts treated with 303 aerospace protectant.
All fasteners removed were ultrasonically cleaned, and some polished.

This is a true “no stone unturned” mechanical and cosmetic refresh, I was originally planning on keeping this one. Due to recent events and acquiring yet another VFR project I now have three 3rd gen VFR’s so I’ve decided to let this one go. I really want to find a decent home for this one, it’s taken a lot of work to get it up to its current mechanical state. There are still a few very minor imperfections on the bike and it’s not 100% original and OEM, but I guarantee you will not find a cleaner or more mechanically sorted VFR outside of the Barber Museum.

Some of the pictures show the bike with a Vance & Hines SS2R slip-on. Others have the stock exhaust can. The buyer will have the choice between the two, but both are not included (I need one for the other VFR I have in the works).

Price: Asking $5,500

Nobody here at RSBFS is going to tell you that a 1992 Honda VFR750F is the collector’s bucket list bike in terms of long term monetary value. But if you ride what you own – and ride a lot – you could scarcely do better than some of the under-appreciated models in the motorcycling spectrum. The VFR is definitely one of them, and I challenge you to find a better example of the breed than this beautiful specimen. It is completely stock, has all the OEM bits and is mechanically nearly new – making it an exceptional find in today’s market. Unchecked – 2003 Honda RVT1000R / RC51 with only 795 Miles !

Hard to know whether parking a barely broken in RC51 would elicit cheers or jeers, but it’s looking downright visionary 17 years later.  Today’s RVT1000R is a one-owner, carefully tended, showroom stocker in amazing shape.

As the second round of RC51’s, the SP-2 had revised suspension and fuel injection.  133 hp were on tap at 10,000 rpm, thanks to dual fuel injectors in each 62mm throttle body.  Up front, that triangular scoop sends fresh air through ports on either side of the headstock right to the airbox.  HRC had plenty of input on the alloy chassis and rear suspension, though the new model’s wheelbase grew a bit.  Fully adjustable dampers are aboard the 43mm forks and Pro-Link monoshock.  Side-facing rads have a lot of exhaust area and there is a cooling fan behind each one.   The myriad incremental changes on the SP2 made for another Colin Edwards WSBK championship.

Though years of storage might have more effect than 795 road miles, neither are apparent from the pictures of this RC51.  Not seeing any mods save a magnetic tank protector.  Too many good pictures to bring over but they are available with the seller’s comments in the eBay auction:

Original Arizona title, with only 795 original miles.  D208 OEM tires, service just completed, new lithium battery, NGK IFR9H11 spark plugs, fuel system service ( fuel injectors sent to RC Fuel Injection for cleaning and flow testing with receipt, new fuel filter, pressure regulator ) GN4 oil and OEM filter, both OEM keys, books, toolkit, solo cowl cover and spare passenger seat, gasket for rear passenger seat.  Fantastic condition, doubt there’s a better 700 mile bike on the planet, has been stored since 2004.

The SP2 is the curator’s pick for a long-term RC51 purchase, though there was a Nicky Hayden special edition which might be more collectible.  The ask for this example is not far from double the MSRP, a good comment on the sport bike market.  Hopefully this one isn’t quite done turning the gears, and can produce a few grins before going up on the pit stand for the long term.

Half a World Away – 1991 Honda NSR250R

A continent or two removed from the usual superbike competition, very lightweight two-strokes lessen the role of the right wrist in any performance riding.  Here’s a Honda MC21 ready for registration and rejuvenation.

The NSR250 went through four developments, with the MC21 being third.  All used the 249cc twin, just about square bore and stroke, legislated at 45hp in the home market, but closer to 60 ponies when de-restricted.  Though carburetted, the PGM-III underseat ECU controlled reed valves and ignition advance based on throttle and gear selector position.  Semi-adjustable forks and Pro-Link monoshock presumed a youthful touch on the seat, but triple disks were ready to haul you down from top speed.  Especially in replica livery, the light but full fairing channeled the RS250R racebike.

As presented, this NSR250R shows some 8,233 miles, but begs for more pictures and information.  The bodywork may be a replacement, but the red seat console seems to be an MC18 livery.  On a 1991 model the assymetrical swingarm would normally be seen, but this one is straight-legged.   The SP sticker might be just that, but might be worth pursuing.  Looks like a thorough going over will be required before and after bidding.  Comments from the eBay auction:

Early 90’s – complete bike – speedo shows 13.3k – imported from England a couple of years ago – went into my collection and been sitting ever since – I never rode it – bike is in good shape for age – but not perfect – no title – comes with import papers and bill of sale – if you know what your looking at – this is a rare bike that is getting harder to find.

Honda was in competition with the RGV250, TZR250, and KR1 for the home and limited export market, and the lead swapped around regularly.  Prices on restored or collector models justify interest in a semi-project like this, but it’s a slippery slope.  Add the importation/registration question to the list, though the racetrack is really the place for an NSR250R these days.  Unlike the road, nobody out there is on the phone.

TGIF: 1998 Honda CBR 600F3 Smokin Joes

How about a Friday quickie that isn’t closed yet? Check out this wonderful Honda CBR 600 F3 in full-blown Smokin’ Joe’s livery! Not terrifically rare in base model formats, the one year only yellow/purple livery celebrates Honda’s CBR dominance in AMA racing, and includes a thoughtful nod to hall of famer and multi-time AMA Superbike and Supersport champion, Miguel Duhamel. Instantly recognizable as a special edition, the Camel cigarettes sponsorship is not very PC today, but accurately represents the state of racing in the late 1990s.

1998 Honda CBR 600F3. Smokin’ Joe’s Special Edition. Camel Racing. Includes owners manual, tool kit, and original exhaust pipe (and some replacement stickers). Purple, yellow, and white seat. Also included is a matching vintage HJC helmet. Great condition collector motorcycle. Some of the smaller vinyl graphic letters near the Dunlop sticker under the seat are missing. Also there are some very light scuffs in the purple on the lower right hand side just ahead of where your foot would go (see picture where I am pointing) and on the adjacent Honda Powered sticker. The battery probably should be replaced, otherwise this bike is ready to ride.

The Smokin’ Joe’s Replica – aside from the graphics – is essentially a stone stock CBR600. There were an estimated 1500 units produced in 1998, making this a reasonably rare motorcycle. Sadly there is little collector value over and above a clean and low mileage CBR of similar vintage. These are also easily faked with plastics and a sticker kit, so RSBFS readers are cautioned to always do your homework. I am told there is a VIN check for the SJR models related to the 6th, 7th and 8th digits (“253”) and the model listed on the VIN plate includes “SE,” but perhaps experts can chime in on the comments. Three Legged Race: 1985 Honda NS400R

The Wonderful World of Honda in the 1980s pretty much consisted of every possible engine arrangement, frame type, suspension system, across multiple models in the same segment. It was like Honda decided to shotgun the sporting world with as many options as possible. In truth, Honda was looking for an edge – both at the racetrack as well as the showroom. What transpired was a significant number of hits… and misses. The wonderfully weird NS400R is an example the falls right in the middle of the pile; it was not a monumental failure, but neither was it a runaway success. Today these remain very unique motorcycles.

While the rest of the two stroke world was playing with parallel twins, v-fours or square fours in 250cc or 500cc capacities, Honda threw that all out the window by marketing a 400cc v-three. Hondas ATAC exhast power valves were used on two of the three cylinders to aid in lower RPM torque. Tight and compact, the 400cc motor breathed through reed valves with carbs that were nestled inside of the vee. The configuration was for two cylinders to point forward with one upward, allowing for a very low and forward placement in the aluminum perimeter cradle chassis. The NS400R came equipped with a 16″ front wheel to lower gyroscopic steering effects, which was GP-level technology at the time. With 72 HP pushing 359 lbs of bike, performance was spirited.

Wearing its factory-issue blue and white Rothmans livery, the replica racer is the largest-displacement, street-legal two-stroke road bike that Honda produced. The limited-production NS400R was only sold from 1985 to 1988, and this first-year model traces its lineage back to 1979. Honda was cleaning up in 500cc class motocross racing with two-stroke engines, but its four-stroke-powered World Grand Prix road bikes were lagging behind the competition. After internal deliberation over its four-stroke racing heritage, Honda pushed forward into two-stroke development and created an engine that was literally three times as good as its single-cylinder motocross performers. The water-cooled NS500 fused the power of three two-stroke motocross engines into a compact and lightweight V-3 configuration that produced 120 HP at 11,000 RPM. Freddie Spencer grabbed Honda’s first 500cc class win in 15 years on an NS500 in 1982, and then rode a lighter and more powerful NS500 to a 1983 500cc World Championship. The following year, Honda manufactured a limited-production version of the championship racer for privateers called the RS500 that was a near duplicate of the works machine without the specialized exhaust. Yamaha and Suzuki had already released street-legal replica racers, and Honda answered the challenge with the NS400R in 1985. The 387cc liquid-cooled two-stroke V-3 cranked out 72 HP at 9,500 RPM with triple flat-slide carburetors, and a 6-speed transmission wet clutch combination got the power to the ground. TRAC anti-dive front forks and a Pro-Link rear suspension joined a box section alloy frame and triple disc brakes with dual-piston calipers. The road-going replica racer was a street-legal facsimile of the NS500 V-3 that Fast Freddie rode past his 4-cylinder competition to become the youngest ever world champion at 21 years old. Honda discontinued the NS400R in 1988, and this two-stroke V-3 is a collectible waiting for a rider.

Although odd in design, perhaps the worst that can be said about the NS400R is that Honda didn’t make it a full-blown 500cc machine. With decent suspension (including cutting edge anti-dive front fork), full racer bodywork and typical Honda build quality, the NS-R was a formidable machine. But much like the RZ350 that lived in a world of middleweights, the Honda was always just a little bit less than the competition. It stands on its own as a smoking sports bike, handles sublimely well thanks to that low center of gravity and stiff chassis, and was generally regarded as a two stroke that you could live with even when you weren’t wringing it to redline with every gear change.

Today’s example is a very clean NS400R in the Rothman’s racing livery. It has seen a considerable amount of use (reread that statement about this being a two stroke you can live with, above), and that mileage might scare some buyers off. The seller doesn’t say anything about the history of this particular specimen, whether it has gone through a top end rebuild at any time, or when the crank seals were last changed.
