When you think about it, the modern incarnation of MV Agusta produces some pretty sweet – and pretty expensive – motorcycles. Back in 2005, the base model F4 1000S retailed for $21,795. At that price some degree of exclusivity was automatically in the cards, but the S was not nearly as exclusive (or expensive) as the Ago, Tamburini or Senna models. What’s an MV owner to do to stay current and unique?

To address this issue, MV Agusta released a series of Mamba kits, which allowed owners to dress up their pedestrian rides and convert them into carbon fiber wonders…. for a price. There are multiple levels of Mamba kits: A Standard kit, with no limited numbers, a Base kit, limited to 300 units and containing more bits than the standard kit, and finally the range topping Full kit, limited to 300 units and offering a complete “stem to stern” upgrade of the bike. The top level kit retailed for nearly $13k – which was placed on top of the cost of the bike!

As you can see, the Full Mamba kit is really quite extensive! And there is no doubt that the Mamba kit adds a unique look to what is normally the classic sliver/red MV Agusta. I think it looks sharp, and adds a menacing look to an already superbly designed motorcycle. It is also shockingly expensive as a package. The good news for collectors is that sticker shock on used bikes is not really a worry.

This auction is on right now, and there has been a good number of interested bidders. The current bid was up to $9,000 (with reserve still in place) at the time of writing this piece, and the BIN is set for a very reasonable $12,999. You’ll meet the nicest people on one: 1990 Honda CB-1

For Sale: 1990 Honda CB-1 NC-27 CB400F

Never let it be said that RSBFS does not listen to our readers. For all of the exotica posted on these pages, the lowly CB-1 (400cc semi-sportbike that isn’t even a grey-market import) seems to have generated the most positive comments as of late. If you guys like it, we will find more and post more of them. And so as it goes with rare bikes, as soon as you find one and post how rare it is many others will come out of the woodwork – just like this CB-1. We just posted another CB-1 last week – check it out here.

Today’s bike has slightly lower mileage than the previous bike, but some wear is noted both by the seller as well as the pictures. Otherwise, it appears to be in relatively good shape overall. As these CB-1 machines were not collector bikes in the showroom (they simply did not sell, hence the rarity today) – they were cool and relatively cheap transportation for newer riders – they often were not cared for in the manner most would care for a rare and unique bike. The cleaner the example, the higher the price; to minimize issues down the road, our recommendation is to buy the best bike you can afford.

Bike runs perfect. Take it anywhere, ride with confidence. Not a showpiece, but an excellent example of the model.

The zipper rash on the tank and the key rash on the top of the triple clamps do not concern me. The marks on the tail are possibly from soft luggage, which again is not much to worry about. These are all scars of normal use, normal wear and tear. The remark concerning the engine mount is a new one to me – are there known issues with motor mounts on these models? If you are a CB-1 connoisseur, please chime in!

The previous CB-1 sold for a paltry $2,395 – that is a TON of fun for not much scratch. This bike is slowly working its way up, and is currently at $1,175 with reserve not met. If you are looking for inexpensive fun that doesn’t look like a 250 Ninja or something you see on every corner, check out the CB-1. With a great motor and reasonable running gear, it might be exactly what you need to put a grin on your face.

Small package, big fun: 1989 Honda CB-1

For Sale: 1989 Honda CB-1 / CB400F / NC27

The Honda CB-1 was meant to be the spiritual successor to the heralded CB400F Supersport of the 1970’s. As such, it is a cafe racer sports bike with a small displacement, four cylinder engine. This time around, however, techology has improved such that the bike is liquid cooled, and sports a 16-valve head as opposed to the 8-valve, air cooled original.

The CB-1 is not an grey-market import bike – even though it is rare enough to be considered one. The truth is that smaller-displacement motorcycles have traditionally not sold very well in the US; Americans tend to think of anything below 750cc as an entry level motorcycle. That is a real shame, as the 400cc class of bikes available today are quick, lightweight, agile and surprisingly affordable fun.

The Honda CB-1 is a small and light naked sportsbike with a straight-four 399 cc. The Honda model code is NC27. In contrast to all other models of the Honda CB series, the name is written with a hyphen. In some countries it was sold as Honda CB400F as an attempt to connect the model with the original CB400F of 1975, with which it has nothing else in common.

The bike was first introduced in 1989 and built until the end of 1990. Originally developed for the Japanese market, the CB-1 was also officially sold in the USA and Canada. Lots of additional information about this bike can be found by doing a search on the internet.

This bike runs great and rides even better! New EBC front brakes and Dunlop Qualifier tires. It is in very good condition. It does have a small ding in the tank and one in the tail that were touched up. It has fresh oil and is ready to go!

The CB-1 offers about 55 HP and a dry weight in the 370 lb range. Mix in a short wheelbase, and you have the capability of a real monster when the going gets tight and twisty. And while the CB-1 does not have the ultimate top-end rush of the FZ400, it does offer significantly greater mid-range usable power.

This particular bike has approximately 18,000 miles on the clock, and is sporting a Kerker slip-on. It is not clear from the seller what other modifications have been done, and the seller has noted the minor damage to both the tank and the tailsection. There is also some key rash on the top of the triple clamps, which is likely commensurate with the miles on the bike.

So how much for 400cc fun? This auction is going on now, with a current bid of $1,575 and reserve still in place. The BIN is $2,395. The only other CB-1 we have posted on RSBFS was closer to $2k, and it had lower mileage. Depending upon where the reserve is set, there is still a good deal to be had. Interest has been moderate.

If you are thinking that this is simply an RZ350 in funny colors, you must be a U.S.-based RSBFS reader. And you are both right and wrong. While Yamaha brought the two stroke fire back to America for only a few years, these bikes have thrived north of the border for much, much longer. And they were named after the bike the started it all – the Yamaha RD series, with the “LC” standing for “Liquid Cooling.”

Note the lack of fairing. While all RZ350s that came stateside had the small quarter fairing, other markets made this optional. The bike featured today has the fairing, adding to its value.

The seller is claiming only 3626 KM (approximately 2250 miles) on the bike, and has an extensive paragraph in the ad outlining the condition. Because of the low miles, optional fairing and great condition, the asking price is $7,000 Canadian – which equates to just over $6,800 U.S. dollars. This seems high for what we typically see for U.S.-based RZs, plus you will still need to pay for the importation and licensing (the bike is located in Toronto). Back in 1984, Kawasaki shocked the rest of the sportbike world with the introduction of the Ninja. This revolutionary model introduced many firsts to the sportbike community, pairing up a liquid-cooled 900cc inline four with a 16-valve head to produce a reported 115 bhp. It’s introduction immediately sent the air-cooled, 2-valve competition from Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha back to the stone age. The Ninja had arrived, and with it followed a whole new era of performance.

The Ninja chassis was a revolutionary as the powerplant, and used the new motor as a stressed member. All of the latest technology was made available for this bike, including Uni-Track single shock rear suspension, Kawasaki Automatic Variable Damping System (AVDS) anti-dive fork, and a GP-inspired 16-inch front wheel. The critics praised the handling and the power of the Ninja, noting that it was smaller than contemporary 750s of the day, yet faster than the literbikes.

The Ninja was so cool, it was even played a starring role next to Tom Cruise in the movie Top Gun:

Here’s your chance to own a piece of history and Hollywood . The 1984 Ninja was the bike that started the sport bike revolution as it was the first of Kawasaki ’s legendary Ninjas to be sold in the United States. I bought this bike NEW 26 years ago and have enjoyed it, but i have not riden it in 17 years and now it is time for someone else to enjoy her. this bike has 24,300 miles and was never ridden hard (no hole shots, no wheelies) but have done 155 mph two times. she crusies nicely at 80 and only turns 5,000 rpm. the tank was perfect until Vince the rip off from Heyser Cycle got ahold of it to get it running again and he put a small dent/scratch in it. while it sat for 16 years under cover the front brake resivor leaked and bubbled the paint on the upper fairing and put a small crack next to the screw as seen in the photo. it also leaked on the inside of the mid fairing and cracked it in three places. i have a mid fairing that goes with the bike that is not cracked and has all the tabs, however the paint is not as nice as mine. on a scale of 1-10 it is a 7. also a extra rear shock goes with the bike and extra side panels(not as nice as mine but a 7 on the scale). any white seen on the cases is dried wax. bike never leaked oil until i changed the oil this year and i did not drain the sump, consequently i overfilled it with one quart too much oil and ran it for about 10 minutes and noticed a leak coming from under bike. it will be hard to find a cleaner bike. owners, workshop manual, and dealers brochure included

While the 1984 900cc Ninja was not exactly a limited edition motorcycle, it is a significant model from a historical perspective. And finding an unmolested, original owner machine some 25+ years later is almost unheard of. This bike, while not perfect, does represent a great opportunity to own one of the milestone bikes of the ages. The current bidding is just over $1000, making this a very affordable classic. Think of it: For the price of some insignificant rat bike, you could own a classic, milestone motorcycle that will be sure to turn heads for another 25 years to come. 1985 Yamaha RZ500 With Modern Updates!

This RZ500 has some very nice modern updates!  Located in Boynton Beach, Florida is a 1985 Yamaha RZ500.  What’s better than dropping a two-stroke motor in a modern chassis?  Well, this seller found out that it can be very nice to use modern components while maintaining the look of a classic bike.  This RZ has been fitted with modern bits in the form of a 2009 R6 front end (Blue fender is still attached), R6 rear wheel, and Aprilia rear swing arm.  Other improvements include Hyperpro rear shock and Jim Lomas SS exhaust.  All the original parts are also included with the sale.  The bike also has new paint.  Not only does this bike look like a 500GP bike with that rear swing arm, I bet it rides beautifully too.  The seller states that more than $25,000 has gone into this bike and I don’t doubt that number if this work was done in a shop.  The asking price is $14,000; about where we’ve seen low mile, completely original, bikes priced.  This bike isn’t original but it is designed for an owner who will use their RZ on back roads more than at bike nights.  If you’d like to ride a modernized big two-stroke, see this RZ on Craigslist here.

1985 Yamaha RZ500 In California!

We always love a RZ500 and here is another one in California.  Located in the San Fernando Valley of California is a 1985 Yamaha RZ500 with 24,000 miles.  The seller dosen’t say much about the bike other than that it is completely original–however, it does have aftermarket turn signals–having never been raced or dropped.  The seller states that it has been in storage for 10 years.  If it just came out of storage it is obviously going to need to be gone through.  The seller is very realistic, based on the mileage and that it was recently removed from storage, as he is asking a very decent $6,500.  If you have no problem cleaning carbs, possibly some surface corrosion, and dirt; this could be a very fun bike that you’d have no fear of loosing money on.  See the bike on Craigslist here.
