Featured Listing: Tastefully modified 2001 Suzuki TL-1000S

The Suzuki TL-1000S was a monster of a sport naked that came out a little bit before the thirst for such things got really desperate, and then promptly got swamped in the publicity surrounding the TL-1000R superbike, which was supposed to beat Ducati at its own game. 

Unfortunately for Suzuki, the TLR whiffed as a racebike, but its market share still eclipsed the TLS, and some handling bugaboos for both bikes eventually spelled the TL nameplate’s end. 

But for those who caught on, the 2001 Suzuki TL-1000S is still an amazingly competent canyon stalker, a sort of bug-eyed Japanese Tuono. With a sporty riding position, big brakes, USD front suspension and nigh-on 120 horsepower on tap, they’re fully equipped to scare you witless. 

And this one has been tweaked and tuned heavily but tastefully, making it pretty close to the ultimate street TL. The list of mods is long, and we’ll let the seller give you the full rundown, but here are the highlights: Ohlins suspension front and rear, Brembo monoblocs, gold Carrozzeria forged wheels and a Yoshimura exhaust. 

The Ohlins set up not only brings a big splash of bling, it also takes care of Suzuki’s weird rotary damper rear suspension set up, which some riders reported could overheat and become scary.

Big Green Monster: 1983 Kawasaki KZ1000R ELR

Used to be factories could build race replicas by throwing on a garland sticker, some reservoir shocks, a rorty pipe and a loud paintjob. Just basic mods and some raucous pigments got you looking a lot like Eddie Lawson back in 1983, though getting near his lap times still required a pile of special parts, and just a dollop of otherworldly talent.

Kawasaki celebrated Eddie’s pre-500cc grand prix 1981 AMA Superbike championship in high style, churning out about 1,000 examples of the wild 1983 Kawasaki KZ1000R. The engine came straight out of the regular KZ1000, albeit with a few tweaks. The bodywork was from the mighty GPz 1100, while the seat and bars were near-takeoffs from Lawson’s race-ready mount. 

The lovely thing about the Eddie Lawson Replica is that there are no hyper-performance parts to get in the way of everyday rideability. The big mill is air-oil cooled to keep temperatures in check as simply as possible. It also sports a roller bearing crank assembly to insure magnificent longevity. 

This ELR has been ridden, and it shows, but that is part of its charm. The nicks, rubs and touch-up paint show someone did their best to do right by the bike’s namesake, racking up just over 16,000 miles in the process. Nonoriginal parts are few and far between, though some lovely Ohlins rear shocks have made their way to the party.

1983 Kawasaki KZ1000R – Eddie Lawson Replica – Factory Race Replica

This is an extremely original example of the limited production, special edition superbike commemorating Eddie Lawson (1981-82 Superbike Champion and four-time 500cc World Champion). Less than 1,000 ever produced, with some sources citing only 750 having been made (www.motorcycleclassics.com). When we first saw this bike at the Barber Vintage Motorcycle Museum it made an immediate impression, and we knew we had to have one. Wearing infamous Kawasaki racing green paint, the KZ1000R is powered by a 998cc double-overhead camshaft inline four. The Kerker 4-into-1 is factory included.

This motorcycle came from a high-end collector and has been well-preserved and well-loved. As far as we can discern the paint is all original, as are nearly all of the components on the vehicle. The non-original items include the fairing decals and brand new Ohlins rear shocks. All electric components function, as do all of the gauges and dash indication lights.

We have completed the following maintenance items:

• Fresh oil change.
• We rebuilt the petcock.
• Steering bearings were just replaced.
• New drive chain.

We’d like to disclose all of the imperfections in writing for full transparency. Please refer to all photos, as well as the additional photos and videos linked below:

• There is touch up paint on the back of the front fender.
• The mirror mount on the front brake master cylinder (right-hand side) has material missing but still functions.
• Scratches on the underside of the tank with light dings on other parts of the body.
• There is a light abrasion on the back side of the right fork.
• Small tears along the edge of the seat.

Clean title in hand. A must-have bike for the collection that you wont be afraid to ride!

Featured Listing: Tastefully Modified 2004 Honda RC51 Nicky Hayden Edition

The Honda RC51 had a short lifespan as a factory-supported superbike contender, but it made its years count, taking home World Superbike titles in 2000 and 2002. The latter was a special year for the big twin Honda, as Nicky Hayden also captured the AMA Superbike championship aboard one. Honda celebrated the feat in 2004 by building a run of RC51s that wore the Hayden red white and silver livery, as well as faux number plates and the Kentucky Kid’s signature Woody Woodpecker decals.

The seller of this gorgeous 2004 Honda RC51 has taken the modifications beyond the sticker kit, adding a list of functional updates as long as your arm. The most obvious are the magnificent Core Moto wheels. A Scott’s steering damper is paired with K-Tech cartridge-equipped forks and an Ohlins rear shock to keep the chassis in top form. With less than 7,000 miles on the clock, you’ll be hard pressed to find a nick or scratch on this machine.

Featured Listing: 1997 Yamaha FZR600R

The Yamaha FZR600 is the classic middle kid — unsure of itself after being wedged between overachieving older and younger siblings. The FZR1000 and YZF750 above it made impressive street and racing mounts, while the slick, aluminum-framed FZR400 below it gained a cult following for its precise handling.

But the FZR600, with a steel frame and nothing-special parts spec was a street bike through and through, so it didn’t catch the love that the others did. That didn’t stop Yamaha selling them by their legions. Identity crisis or no, they were fast, agile, affordable streetbikes that filed out of dealers. As such, it’s rare to find one of the 90-horsepower, 400-pound beasties in complete, good, unmolested shape. And yet here one is.

This 1997 Yamaha FZR600R is in beautiful original shape, and is as it left the dealership down to the warning stickers. Unlike most of its kin, it does not sport a custom exhaust and has all of its fairings. While the video shows blemishes consistent with a drop, the damage is pretty minimal. It has a recent oil change and carb clean and the tires and chain look great.

Low mile, All original 1997 FZR 600R

8,821 miles, 2 owners, Near Mint and all original. While this bike may not be considered as collectible as my first offering, it certainly shows how well these bikes age when cared for appropriately. This example has all original equipment as it rolled off the showroom floor right down to all the original warning decals and reflectors. The body and paint is near perfect, un-restored with no cracks and only 1 small spot of rash touched up on the right-mid which appears to have been from a minor garage incident. The FZR 600 was truly a workhorse in the Yamaha Sportbike line, remaining relatively unchanged from 89 as a competitive 600 class track bike and ending its 10 year run as a great utility sportbike. From today’s perspective, with its conservative riding position, small size and mellow power delivery, this motorcycle would fit as a great starter bike or a worthy addition to a Yamaha Fanatics collection.

Make no mistake, even though the FZR600R got caught between its siblings and missed out on some laurels, it is still great fun on the street, and you’re not likely to see one this nice again soon. At just $3,200, this cool old horse is almost a no-brainer.

10/10: 1991 Bimota YB10 Dieci

This 1991 Bimota YB10 Dieci is back on eBay after it didn’t sell a couple of months ago. We wrote about it then, but figured we’d take another crack at it now that it’s back. When the Dieci bowed, it represented the culmination of a 10-bike collaborative effort between the Rimini firm and Yamaha, a feat the Italians celebrated with a bike that was way more than the sum of its parts.

By the early ‘90s, Bimota’s Japanese engine-bespoke chassis-classy suspension formula was well-established, and the Dieci employed it to textbook effect. The Yamaha FZR1000 engine was massaged by Bimota to knock on the door of 150 horsepower, and was cradled in a proprietary beam frame and suspended by fancy Marzocchi bits front and rear. It was slowed by 320mm front and 230mm rear discs. Dry weight was under 420 pounds.

Despite the terrifying numbers, the Dieci was known for being almost as comfortable and easy to live with as it was stupidly fast. For the pleasure, you had to be extremely well-heeled, as Bimota built just 225 over a three-year run and commanded the price of a nice car for the privilege.

This one sets itself apart as it has just 1.3 miles on the analog odometer, which likely means it has only been fired to move it around a parking lot. Past that, it has sat untouched in a collection. As you would expect, it is as close to flawless as a 28-year-old bike gets.

Rumble and Whine: 1990 Honda RC30

Trying to come up with something new and interesting to type about Honda’s [insert superlative] RC30 is like trying to tell a budding car nut something they don’t know about a Ferrari F40. The specs are available with a single Google query. The original and retrospective road tests drip with corn syrup-sweet praise for the torquey-but-temperamental V4, the obviously hand-made body panels, the wet weight that was 10 percent down on its rivals, the quick-but-forgiving handling and on and on and on.

On top of all that, the 1990 Honda RC30 is beautiful. The livery is perfect, the single-sided swingarm — a revolution at the time — distinctive, eye-catching and purposeful and the snow-white wheels subtly flashy and fully on display. Nothing about this bike says “take it easy today, fella.” This hype is to thank for the bikes’ recent and sharp uptick in value. In the last year, we’ve seen decent ones go for around $30k, but a couple of auction sales and more Internet forum gushing seem to have pushed that north.

This 1990 Honda RC30 is a fantastic example of the breed, with a tick over 5,000 miles on its analog clock. The fairings appear to be the original pieces with some scratches and evidence of paintwork to show for their 29 years. There is also some dust and dirt here and there, but the bike appears to be devoid of any real dirt or corrosion. As the seller says, those old Metzelers will need to go if you plan to ride this thing. Mechanically, it appears mostly stock, with the exception of a ridiculously rad period HRC exhaust.

One of the modern era’s few immediately collectible classics, the Honda VFR750R – better known as the ‘RC30′ – was created for just one reason: to win the World Superbike Championship, a feat it achieved in the nascent series’ first two seasons of 1988 and 1989. And while American Fred Merkel was bringing Honda its first two WSB crowns, Britain’s Carl Fogarty used an RC30 to win the TT F1 World Championship in 1988 and 1989, and the equivalent FIM Cup in 1990.

No mere short circuit scratcher, the RC30 and its derivatives proved durable enough to win a hat-full of Endurance Classics too. That this latter requirement was also part of the design brief may be determined from the fact that a quick-release front fork and single-sided swinging arm – essential for speedy wheel changes – were part of an unrivalled specification that included a twin-spar alloy beam frame, 16-valve V4 engine with gear-driven cams, close-ratio six-speed gearbox and four-pot front brake calipers.

All of which did not come cheap: at the time of its launch in 1988 an RC30 cost near double that of other super-sports 750s. Despite the passage of time and progress of motorcycle technology, the RC30 remains a match for the latest generation of sports bikes but possesses an exclusivity that none of them can approach. ‘No other bike from the late-Eighties is lusted after like the RC30’, reckoned Bike, and few would disagree. And then there’s the exhaust note – loud, of course, but soulful enough to bring a pit crew to tears.

This RC30 was only very recently liberated from long-term ownership as part of a very discerning collection of cars and motorcycles. Regularly maintained since new, the bike runs and rides exceptionally well.

This legendary machine is offered in excellent condition throughout. The engine starts readily, though a little cold-blooded, idles smoothly and has an abundance of power. AN ABUNDANCE! The clutch is silky-smooth and brakes and suspension are near perfect. I would opt for a new pair of tires before serious road use and am happy to negotiate your tire choice and installation in to the price.

There are a few scratches in the paint finish around the bike, and I suspect the bottom of the fairing was repainted, likely because of scratches – there are no dings. All body panels are original, and the tank is totally free of blemishes and scratches/dents. Seat is excellent as is the rest of the bike. The bike is accompanied by a clean, clear title, books, spare keys, books/manuals, original rear track stand, and a full set of completely untouched tools.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a motorcycling icon of performance and a must-have for a discerning collection.

At almost $37,900, the asking price for this RC30 is about in line with the market. We have seen other low-mileage RC30s change hands for a few thousand dollars more, but with the bodywork and imperfections, this bike is a notch below the upper echelon.

This 1988 Yamaha RZ350 is a gorgeous example of one of North America’s last-ever road-going two-stroke sport bikes. As the 1980s waned, environmental regulations had all but ruled the simple-but-effective machines off the roads on this continent, leaving the smoky mounts for European roads.

But what a swansong the RZ350 was. The parallel twin used the variable port height Yamaha Power Valve System that was developed over years in 500cc GP competition, which gave the normally peaky powerplant a respectable torque curve. The bikes still made prodigious power for their displacement and weight, and the two stroke was still a two stroke, which meant the machines were not to be trifled with.

In the United States, the RZ350s are best known without a fairing and with the bumblebee paintjob that adorned Kenny Roberts’ race bikes. This example wears a full fairing, and Yamaha’s equally cool red, white and blue block paint scheme.

Imperfections – the tabs where the body work attaches under the seat have cracked – these are not visible from the outside – could be plastic welded back to be complete. There are two hairline stress cracks on the bike (shown in pics) – first is one side of the fairing – second is where one of the mirrors attach to the bike.

Paint condition – excellent – stunning to look at

Reason for selling: I had bought the bike as I had always wanted an RZ350 and was looking for something fun to ride for pleasure use. After buying it and having it serviced, I realized the bike is such a rare survivor that I don’t feel right risking riding it around town. It really should be in the hands of a serious collector or a museum. I have bought another “rider quality” RZ350 for my own personal use.

Though the bike is in Canada, its age should make it eligible to be imported and registered fairly simply. With a recent service, it’s ready for a long riding season, though if you’re like the seller, it might be hard to stomach the idea of road hazards marring that beautiful paint.

Time capsule superbike: 2003 Honda RC-51

The Honda RC-51 was Big Red’s answer to Ducati’s twin-powered attack on turn-of-the-century World Superbike, with a big v-twin stuffed between the generous alloy framerails. The big-bore twin immediately paid off for Honda, with Colin Edwards cracking off to the 2000 World Superbike Championship on the bike’s first try. It won the WSBK crown again in 2002 with Edwards and took the AMA Superbike Championship the same year with Nicky Hayden.

This 2003 Honda RC-51 is an SP2 model, meaning it is stiffer, lighter and slightly more powerful than the 2000-2001 models, and easily the more desirable version. It’s not too hard to find an RC-51 in decent shape these days, as they didn’t sell in astounding numbers and tended to go to Honda and superbike fanbois who took excellent care of them. This one takes that to a new level, though, with fewer than 1,000 miles on the clock courtesy of two previous owners.

According to the seller, the first owner was an elderly man who bought the bike to hold on to. The current owner bought it three years ago, and has since brought it back to running condition, though he stopped short of replacing the original tires or brake fluid. The bike certainly deserves to be ridden, though that choice will not be made easier by the prospect of disturbing an all-original machine.

This is a true unicorn, I’m curious how many are out there with less than 1,000 miles! The bike is completely free from corrosion, it was stored in a climate controlled garage. She has never seen the track and the finish is in amazing condition. The original factory torque markings are still found throughout the bike as well as the factory grease on the brake and clutch levers!

I purchased this RC51 out of an elderly gentleman’s collection earlier this year. He was the original owner and used the bike very sparingly and gently as indicated by the odometer and it’s condition. The RC was prepped for storage and sat for about 3 years before I brought it back to life. The gas was swapped and a new fuel pressure regulator was needed to get her running again. The bike has just received a fresh oil change as well. She is now running beautifully and everything works flawlessly as it should.

This bike is currently collector status with the original date-coded Metzler tires. The brake fluid and coolant is original as well. I think it would be taboo to ride this bike considering it’s condition and mileage. However, if you intend to use the bike, the buyer should replace the brake fluid and tires (17 year old tires and fluids, even if they look good are unsafe)

Please take a close look at all the pictures. There is little evidence that this bike has been used. There is a tiny flaw on the left side exhaust that is barely noticeable, see photos for a close up. Auction includes original rear seat, solo cowl cover and also the original tool kit with all the tools and owners manual.

I highly recommend we use “Haul Bikes” if you are an interstate buyer. I’ve used them twice before and they are super professional.

Though RC-51s don’t carry the same ooh-ahh aura as the RC-30 and RC-45, they were aimed at the same target and were, without question, successful. The bikes might carry the same panache as their Italian rivals, but they are gorgeous, fast and ridiculously capable.
