Featured Listing: 1986 Honda NSR400R

Two stroke engine, sticky tires, loud pipes in the raw and a classic Honda paint scheme. What more are you looking for in a back road tiny terror? This 1986 Honda NSR400R was treated to a very under the radar restomod a couple years back, with the goal of making an already awesome bike more modern-day user friendly. It has period aftermarket capacitors and an awesome, raw finish JollyMoto exhaust to wake the engine up a touch.

The chassis has been treated to a Fox shock and custom, 17-inch Comstar wheels, which means it will accept all manner of modern track day-friendly tires. The forks got custom emulators at the same time. Its age and DNA dictate that it won’t run or ride like a modern machine, but if you’re looking for that, go bark up another tree. This bike will instead give you the best possible experience a mid-80s sportbike can.

Selling my 1986 Honda NS400R that I imported from Canada ~7 years ago. ~2.5 years ago it completed a full restoration/subtle restomod done by the excellent team at RestoCycle in Tucson, AZ (I can send a link to all the details of the build to anyone interested – just send me a message). The entire bike was gone over from stem to stern to ensure that it was in tip top running shape. The subtle restomod that I had done were all aimed at a better riding experience – custom 17″ Comstar wheels so that you can use more modern rubber, an adjustable Fox shock (freshly rebuilt) for the rear, and custom emulators for the front forks by Cogent Dynamics. The bike runs, ride, handles, and looks great. I did not have it done to a concours level restoration, it was meant to be ridden and enjoyed, so there are a few small nicks and dings here and there, but, overall, the bike looks fantastic. And the sound from the Jolly Moto pipes that the second owner put on are awesome (and, iirc, the bike even visited the Jolly Moto factory when it spent a few years riding around Europe). The only current niggle on the bike is that the low oil light sometimes comes on erroneously (there is plenty of oil in the premix tank) – other than that it is in great shape and ready to go. Currently showing 52654 KM (~32.7k miles) on the odometer – mileage might go up a little as I might take it out for a short spin or two. Lots of spare parts that I will be listing separately once the bike is sold (spare gas tanks, carbs, bodywork, original comstar wheels, gaskets, spare oil pump, some spare bodywork parts, swingarm, seat pan, stock rear stand, etc, etc), but would be willing to sell as a package deal to the buyer of the motorcycle.

This is one of the best, IMO, 2 stroke motorcycles ever made.

Pulling back from a closeup of the mods, the bike is near flawless cosmetically, which is increasingly rare in any bike this age, but especially one of this ilk. The original pieces and spare parts, including the stock Comstars, spare carbs, bodywork and a spare gas tank, can be had as a package deal with the bike, but otherwise will be sold separately. Reserve is set at $10k.

Featured Listing and NO RESERVE: 1987 Suzuki RGV250Γ for Sale

It’s a shame that we never really got any of the incredibly focused quarter-liter sportbikes from Japan here in the USA. Luckily, a few have sneaked in over the years, followed by a veritable flood of Japanese market bikes that have been brought over in recent years, since most are now over 25 years old and much easier to import. The spec sheets would have you believe they’re all virtually the same bike, but each had its own unique character, and today’s Featured Listing Suzuki RGV250Γ was the wild-child of the bunch.

Introduced in 1987 as a 90° v-twin followup to the parallel-twin RG250, the new RGV250 “Gamma” went through VJ21, VJ22, and VJ23 iterations before disappearing. The liquid-cooled two stroke engine displaced the expected 249cc, with a bore and stroke of 56mm x 50.6mm, and was backed by the equally expected six-speed gearbox. The bike used a 17″ front wheel and an 18″ rear as was common in the class, although later models featured matched 17″ hoops.

The “Real Sprinter Slingshot” emblazoned on the tail sounds like the sort of technical jargon the Japanese are known for but, as far as I can tell, it’s just a bit of a tie-in to the four-stroke GSX-R of the period that featured “Slingshot” carburetors. Later bikes featured swanky asymmetrical “banana” swingarms and electronic power valves, all shoutingly-proclaimed in bright acronyms on the fairings. Those bikes were more developed and more refined but, at just 282lbs dry, the VJ21 seen here was the lightest and most powerful of the bunch, and perhaps the most pure as well.

NO RESERVE This model not sold in USA, Direct import Japanese Domestic Market bike, 62hp pre-restrictions model, lightest weight year. Pretty much 250GP bike with lights added, cassette gearbox, all the right stuff! This is my favorite bike I have ever owned, absolute joy to ride, moving to where there are no roads, so gotta part with it. Runs great, shifts great, rides great. Recent sticky Dunlop Alpha 13 dot race series tires. Current MD tags and title. Original front fender cracked, see pic small cracks on fairings nothing major. Includes racing replica plastics from Hong Kong. Includes lots of extras, complete good running and shifting spare black Walter Wolf engine (no carbs, shift lever or kickstarter), original white wheels (18 in rear.) Zeeltronic programmable ignition box/ exhaust valve controller, spare exhaust valve actuator. Only bad, fork seals leak therefore front brake pads are oily. 29,614 km, or 18,401 miles. Unrestricted first year production for the V2, year after these were made Japanese law limited engine HP output. Also advertised locally so if ended early, that’s why.

Note that the seller does have this listed as a 1987 model and it’s probably titled that way, but it looks like a VJ21 model from 1988. That may just be a quirk of titling and registration, or the bike was a very early production VJ21. This is obviously not a perfectly-preserved museum piece. It’s a rider, and comes with some spares to change the look, or just keep the bike running. Or maybe you just happen to have an engine-less Walter Wolf RG250 lying around and can use the included engine to get that project rolling. The aftermarket panels might not be remotely original, but I like the idea of installing the included aftermarket, race-replica bodywork for a bike that’s intended to be ridden hard, instead of being displayed in a hermetically-sealed garage.

1996 Suzuki RGV250SP VJ23

It’s been a while since we had an RGV250 without Disney cels in the background, but this SoCal example is a wake-up call to the mouse button finger.  This last-of-the-series VJ23 is a Sport Production model with the new 70-degree V-twin, Fla. title and nice cosmetics.

A lot of RGV250 history was revised with the 1996 engine, beside being capable of 62 hp, it had electric start !  The VJ23 engine was just about “square” and revved to 12,500 rpm, though peak power was back at 9,500.  Expansion chambers and upside-down forks were standard, and the single seat helped keep weight under 300 lbs.  The Sport Production equated to a factory dry clutch and close-ratio gearbox.

This owner imported and federalized the RGV, and installed a full Jolly Moto exhaust.  A fairly extensive re-fresh ensued, and a new gauge cluster sourced, thus the 5,500 claimed miles.  The purple accents may or may not delight, but the overall feeling is very good, and the owner relates some history in the eBay auction:

This bike had 7,200Km or 4,300 miles on it at the time of purchase. Then I went through at great expense to convert it to the full power model. I purchased brand new, not used, at great cost, the full power speedo gauge assembly (240KPH speedo), full power black box, air box lid, clutch springs and finally set of Jolly Moto pipes. The Jolly Moto pipes were not the best fitting with the bodywork, but do they preform outstanding and look great! Carburetors re-jetted accordingly. Then I rebuilt the top end using the full power pistons. They have a different coating on them to help avoid detonation at higher speeds. I installed new clutch plates for the dry clutch, new racing 26mm thick radiator, steering damper, wave rear disk, chain, Steel brake lines with Aluminum fittings, silicone radiator hoses, new chain and sprockets, a fortune in titanium, aluminum and stainless bolts. All jetted just right. Just recently I rebuilt the front forks using all new seals and bushing, all new brake fluid and gear oil, new air filter, brake pads, front turn signals, hoses, and a fresh set of sticky Dunlop Q3’s. Cleaned the carburetors added a new factory petcock and Lithium battery. All the switches, lights, turn signals, starter, horn operate without a problem. Oil injection is still intact. This bike is not all corroded out or full of oxidation like many of these bikes from Japan. Very Clean.

The bodywork on it looks fine for a bike it’s age, but not museum quality. There are small scratches, chips around the bike. All minor stuff. Please look at the pictures. The bottom right fairing has some “waves” from getting hot. That was there when I purchased the bike. Side panels are nice but a mark here and there. The tank is excellent shape. No dent and clean inside with a new factory petcock just installed. Paint is still shiny and bike looks great overall. Remember its 25 years old. Though this bike looks stunning, I built it to be a runner not a museum piece. It really runs great and once you hit redline in third with a little speed and air flow the ram air really kicks in and the bike accelerates hard. Much better than my VJ22. Less temperamental with the jetting.

The bike shows about 2,130 KM or 1,250 miles on it with the new speedo installed. Remember it has 7,200KM or 4,300 miles when I bought it. So do the math for the total. Still the 1,250 miles represents all the mileage I have put on it since I converted the bike to full power and installed the new top end.  Not much. I love this bike but realized, one I have too many bikes sitting around, and second I’m just too old at social security age to be hauling around on it anymore.

As the century wound down, the RGV250 could no longer find a place in the regulations, and though Aprilia stuck with it, even they couldn’t justify re-tooling for the updated VJ-23 engine.  Unfamiliar riders below a certain height-weight quotient might be surprised by the adult packaging of the later models, and the power delivery is epic.  Seems like a lot has been done right with this SP, and glad it’s a rider, not a display model.

Devil in the Details: 1994 Suzuki RGV250Γ for Sale

If you love classic racing graphics on your sportbike, but feel guilty about supporting tobacco brands, this Pepsi-liveried Suzuki RGV250Γ could be just the ticket! Just try not to think too much about the obesity epidemic sweeping the country… Maybe the best bet is probably to find a defunct brand that won’t benefit from your cruising around on a sleek, rolling billboard plastered with their logo.

On paper, the Gamma and its 80s and 90s quarter-liter competitors from Honda, Yamaha, and Kawasaki all looked very similar: two cylinder liquid-cooled two-stroke powerplants, six-speed gearboxes, stiff aluminum frames, triple disc brakes, and wheels shod with the stickiest modern rubber. But they all managed to have their own individual character to appeal to brand loyalists and discriminating enthusiasts.

The Honda may have been the most refined of the bunch, but the Suzuki was the crazy one, with lively handling and a 90° 249cc two-stroke v-twin that was later borrowed by Aprilia for their RS250. All bikes in the class had some sort of power valve to boost midrange flexibility, and the RGV used Suzuki’s SAPC, an acronym for “Suzuki Advanced Power Control” that electronically controlled a power valve and the ignition timing. A distinctive asymmetrical “banana” swingarm provided clearance for the bulging expansion chambers on the right side of the bike.

He started the journey to build the ultimate RGV250, I finished it. From Pete’s original listing it was rebuilt with a new crank, pistons, and mild port work. Suspension upgraded with a 2013 GSXR 600 rear shock resprung for a 185 LBS rider, 2008 GSXR 1000 front end with forks resprung, front wheel, and radial mounted brakes. Custom rear brake hanger with brembo rear caliper. Katana 5.0 by 17 rear wheel. Tyga carbon fiber rear hugger. Lance Johnson painted a Kevin Schwartz Pepsi RGV livery that looks awesome. Upon acquiring the bike, I made addition upgrades including brand new Tyga stainless Steel GP expansion chambers with carbon fiber canisters, new Tyga triple trees, new Tyga rearsets, new Brembo front master cylinder, new front braided brake lines, new Michelin Pilot RS tires front and rear, new front brake pads, new fork seals, Suzuki kit 23d10 race SAPC, I sourced from Japan a very rare kit SP close ratio transmission, and complete SP dry clutch. Prior to install, I purchased all new OEM clutch plates and gaskets from the Tuning Works. Dyno used to assist jetting and dialing in carbs. I’m summary, it’s an amazing one of a kind RGV250 that runs as good as it looks. It has a clean Florida title and registration in my name. Sold as is. Inspection by appointment. There’s another day or so left on the auction, and bidding is up just above $10,000 with the Reserve Not Met. It looks very clean, but it’s not perfectly original, with lots of aftermarket parts, including those questionable turn signals that aren’t even aimed correctly… The kit gearbox is very nice, and the later GSX-R parts are good quality, but I can’t help but wonder whether or not the forks and radial front brakes might be overkill for a 300lb motorcycle. Overall, it seems like a very slick bike for the right buyer.

Just in time for the start of the COVID-19-shortened MotoGP season, we bring you this 1998 Aprilia RS250 MKII Rossi Edition. This gorgeous, close to original little ripper celebrates the beginning of Rossi’s career, back when he was making it known that he was the next big thing. The bike dropped between The Doctor’s first two championships. He snagged the 125cc crown in 1997 aboard an Aprilia RS125R, before moving up to the 250s in 1998 with the RS250. The next year, his last in the middle class, he secured his second of nine world titles.

The 1998 Aprilia RS250 Mk II differentiated itself from the Mk I machines with a new look, and had upgraded suspension and a wider front tire. The forks were now Showa units and rear ride height was made adjustable for ’98. Engine particulars stayed the same, which means about 55 horsepower in stock trim, delivered all at once above 8,000 rpm. Though the stock horsepower figure can’t hold a candle to a 600cc four stroke, the little Ape weighed just over 300 pounds dry, and stuck to the road like a gecko on a window. The result is sublime when you get it right, rewarding courage and momentum over a more ham-fisted stop-and-go approach.

Much like Rossi, this bike wears its age like a tailored suit. The paint and bodywork are certainly of their time, but are not gaudy, eschewing Rossi’s traditional fluorescent yellow motif. The seller says the bike is stock with the exception of a set of wave rotors on the front brakes, though the originals come with the bike. Past that, it wears a set of 2020 date code Pirellis in S01 compound, and has had the carbs ultrasonically cleaned before being rebuilt and synced. With a clear California title ready to transfer, this special little Aprilia is ready for the canyons and the cruise nights.

Coming out of my private collection of rare 2-stroke sport bikes is this 1998 Aprilia RS250 Mark II Rossi Edition. This bike is in mint condition. It runs and rides as new. It has just over 5000 original miles (8200km ) and it is 100% stock aside from brand new Pirelli tires and front wave rotors (stock rotors come with bike).
We just performed the following service:

-oil change
-2-stroke oil tank filled
-new Pirelli tires (latest 2020 SO1 compound)
-ultrasonically cleaned the carburetors, synced and balanced as well.
-new spark plugs
-adjusted and cleaned chain
-full detail job

This bike is ready to ride and enjoy or put in a collection. It has been kept in my climate controlled showroom, and is ridden at least every 8 weeks. It only has had ethanol-free fuel. There are no known issues mechanically. The only issues cosmetically are 2 very small scratches, 1 on each side of the belly pan. Please see images. Unless you look close on your hands and knees you cannot see them. Otherwise, this bike is as close to perfect as any bike can be. I included several pictures and also a video of it running. All lights, dash, signals, horn, etc function properly.

This RS250 has current California registration, license plate, and is insured. It has a 17 digit VIN which matches the clear California title, and the year, make and model is correct on the California title as well. The registration was just paid for, it is good through July, 2021

I am going to thin out my collection, as I have reached a pinnacle of owning rare 2-stroke sport bikes, and it is time for others to enjoy them. As these rare 2-strokes continue to rise in value, I truly believe this bike is a solid investment for many years to come. They just dont make these anymore!

This bike I consider a Unicorn. Mint condition, low miles, Rossi edition and California plated. You would be hard pressed to find another with all these features. Price is: $13,900 and bike is located in San Jose, CA.

Riders like Valentino Rossi don’t spring from the womb in neon leathers, ready to drag a knee on the way out the delivery room. It takes time to hone their skills on smaller bikes as teenagers, before moving up to Grand Prix machines. The Doctor came up the way you’d expect, from 125s to 250s and on up to 500s, back when two-strokes ruled the grid. And back when he was more Doogie Howser, MD than Dr Gregory House, he earned his first championship win in 1994 on a 125cc Cagiva Mito like today’s Featured Listing.
Introduced in 1989, the Mito featured a lightweight aluminum beam frame, from which was suspended a water-cooled, 125cc two-stroke single with bore and stroke of 56 x 50.6mm, along with the expected six-speed gearbox. What you might not expect on a 125 two-stroke is an electric starter, a nice sophisticated touch. Dry weight was just 284lbs, helped along by the lightweight aluminum frame and in keeping the the bike’s sporty image. It also means the little sportbike is surprisingly agile and quick, with a top speed of just over 100mph. This is a serious piece of kit, and a version was even available with a seven-speed gearbox to better make use of the narrow sliver of power from the little engine.
This example is a Mark II version of the first-generation bike, as indicated by the upside-down forks and the single Brembo Goldline caliper up front. If you want a Mito, it’d be hard not to hold out for one of the later machines styled by Massimo Tamburini to look like a Ducati 916 that was washed in hot water and shrunk a bit, but those are very much in demand and can be pricey, when they can be found at all. This earlier version may not have the Tamburini version’s big-bike associations and looks, but it’s still a very good-looking machine and doesn’t scream “learner bike” like many other 125s.

Bike starts and runs and rides well. Is all stock (minus the front brake pump and oil pump delete). I have all original parts.
The bike is a clear Texas Titled (Bonded earlier this year) 1994 Spanish market Cagiva Mito 125cc with 26,301 on the clock.

The seller is asking $4,500 for this little smoker and, to be clear, it has some cosmetic issues. As you can see from the photos, there is some cracking of the panels around stress points, and some discoloration of the frame from a bit of fuel that’s spilled. Note that the carbon fiber wrap on the swingarm is actually original, and the bike has 26,301 kilometers on the odometer, which is about 16,000 miles. On the positive side, this little machine is complete and as you can see from the included YouTube video, it appears to run well. The Mito is pretty rare in the US, and the seller is upfront and honest about the bike and its condition. It might need some TLC, a respray, and a bit of elbow grease to get it looking its best, but it looks like a solid little machine for a good price or it could be the foundation of a fun restoration project.

Can’t Quit – 1977 Yamaha RD400

Most running, driving bikes with 40-plus years on have taken some kind of rebuild, and this 1977 RD400 is no exception.  This recent completion has had soup to nuts attention with some nice upgrades.

Though regulators in the western hemisphere were already thinking of two strokes in the past tense, Yamaha had a world-wide market to consider, and put a lot of new engineering into the 1976 RD400.  New crankcases were required for the 44 hp twin, and without the counter-balancer required in a four-stroke, resulted in a lightweight power unit.  CDI ignition and rubber engine mounts civilized the new 400.  Chassis and suspension were pretty UJM, but disk brakes and cast wheels were a peek into the future for a small-bore.  Stylists used black mechanicals and chrome exhaust to highlight the tank color.

Offered by a southern Conn. restoration shop, this RD shows just 15,843 miles and recent rebuild of the engine and pretty much everything else.  The blacked-out fenders and yellow wheels update the looks quite a bit, and performance improvements from the DG expansion chambers, K&N filters and remote reservoir shocks can be anticipated.  Nice list of new or rebuilt components from the eBay auction:

This is a very clean custom eye catching RD400 The engine was rebuilt 2 years ago .50 over.  It has very little mileage since the build. Very Sharp. Very clean. It has some desirable mods for the street.  Tuned and timed. Very quick response, nice power band. 

New:  Custom paint & decals w/Matching rims. Very clear gauges. OEM style mirrors. Replacement controls. Grips. Cables. Tires & tubes. Clutch. Fork tubes, seals, dust boots and polished lower fork housings.

Polished heads. Chain and sprockets. Performance master cylinder and clutch levers. New calipers. Rebuilt rear master cylinder. Braided brake lines. Rear sets from HVC. OEM signals & rear tail light. Rebuilt carbs w/pod filters, new jets. Custom seat. RFY rear Nitrogen charged  gas shocks.

Very nice DG chambers – No road rash.  Note: Chain Guard will be installed after modification. 

Lighter than everything comparable, the RD400’s non-linear powerband made friends with reviewers at Cycle World, who called it one of the ten best in 1976 and covered it as recently as 1993.  Yamaha kept honing the two-stroke twin, going back down to a 350, adding catalysts and liquid cooling.  After the two-wheeler was retired in 1995, the powertrain lived on in the Banshee quad, and helped parts availability for RD owners.  This example has a few days to run and hasn’t met the reserve, but the sensible restoration looks good enough to get there.

In these trying times there is tremendous fear as to what might be to come. Worried about raiding your retirement account to purchase that perfect collectible specimen of a RC30 / OW01 / Mh900e that you are not likely to ride? Then how about setting your sights a little lower – as in lower seat height, lower capacity, lower investment risk and lower entry point. The only things that are not reduced with this plan are the cool factor and the fun. Today’s 2005 Aprilia RS50 is the perfect example of this “less is more” philosophy. This is an awesome little bike that allows you to channel your inner Max Biaggi and ride at 10 tenths without risking everything. It looks great and would make a fantastic addition to your man cave or garage. But please don’t miss out on riding – there is absolutely *nothing* like riding a slow bike fast. Those who have tried it would tell you about it, but they can’t stop smiling long enough to talk.

Featured Listing: 2005 Aprilia RS50

The RS50 is not your average little moped. For those raised on MB5s, AR50s and YSR50s (you know who you are), this Italian wonder is a mini GP bike on steroids. Under the full MotoGP fairing enclosing an aluminum, liquid cooled, single cylinder Motori-Minarelli engine (later units were built by Derbi), the RS offers some pretty advanced technology including a full aluminum frame, 17 inch cast wheels with a large 300mm front disk, and 40mm forks. Dry weight slips by under 200 lbs. Power – if you have to ask – hovers around 10-ish provided the tach is pointed at the 1:00 or 2:00 o’clock position. And that is where the fun lies with riding a bike such as this; nothing teaches you corner entry speed, conservation of motion, gearbox management, tachometer awareness and – perhaps most importantly – how to tuck in tight.

The US has never truly embraced the small-bore racing set. We don’t have license restrictions like they do in Asia and Europe. American riders tend to cut their teeth on bigger bikes, and as a result they see small motorcycles as entry level. But if you can work the sliver of a power band and minimize the limitations of the format, you can scare yourself silly while having the absolute time of your life.
