Anarchy in the UK: 1989 Kawasaki KR-1S 250

Although most RSBFS readers are demographically located in the US, I say never mind the bollocks. Sure, this KR-1S is located in Jolly Olde England, but it is a freaking KR-1s! Possibly the rarest of the regular 250cc two stroke set by manufacturer, the KR series has a reputation for being fast, fast, fast.

Of all of the quarter liter smokers, the Kawasaki was generally considered a bit of a failure. Suzuki, Honda and Yamaha dominated the sales floor, as the more rare Kawasaki lagged behind. The downside of the fast, fast, fast component of the KR-1 is that these have also been known to be somewhat fragile, but those that have survived are piquing the interest of collectors. What was a relative “failure” to sell in the day makes this all the more rare today. And today’s sub-8,000 mile example is one that is worth a look.

There is not as much info as we might like to know, and only a few pics of this beauty. The ask is $11,500 USD – which is significantly below the nearly $18k asked for this 1991 California plated dream machine. If you can handle the shipping and importing, this could be a find. Only 10,000 total units of the KR-1 250 series were made, with fewer being the KR-1S model as seen here (and rarer still, the coveted R model).

Upsizing – 1985 Suzuki RG500 in Australia

Most RG500’s seen on RSBFS chronicle the lucky-if-you-can-hang-on 500 two-stroke, but this Aussie example has been bored out to 570cc and well equipped to handle the extra ponies.  It’s finished in a very good dub of Heron Racing’s 80’s livery, and looks just about flawless.

Suzuki had delayed the road-going RG500 until GP technology had moved on a bit ( and engineers had also wrapped up their work on the GSX-R750 ) but it was still heralded as a race bike for the road.  Its 95 hp were a revelation for a ride weighing under 400 lbs., though the square four’s airboxes filled out the fairing.  Using a small cross section alloy chassis, Hamamatsu carefully engineered the RG500 to handle the power, along with air adjustable forks with anti-dive.  Smallish 260mm brakes and staggered 16 and 17-inch wheels were along the smaller, lighter line to quickness.

Evidently built and imported from England, this RG500 shows beautifully and has some later, larger brakes to go with its additional horsepower, and lightweight modular Astralite wheels.  Not quite sure what year this animal is, but there’re no significant differences over the three model years.  Suzuki had their own Skoal livery for a few limited editions, but this more faithful replica has a bit more flash.  Comments from the eBay auction:

Well this is a hard one as I absolutely LOVE this bike.
Bike was built in England and I have many many receipts, can’t remember when she was brought into Australia but it was a long time and has been previously registered in WA, so no issues there.
The bike is now a 570 with Jim Lomas pipes, Astra Light Wheels and bigger brakes etc, all of the original parts paper work and workshop manual go with the sale.
Plastics are all original Suzuki, also have the original pillion seat.
I ride this bike at least twice a month and it absolutely beautiful to ride, I am fortunate enough to have two RG’s and this is my favorite but due to downsizing she has to go.
This bike is an absolute show stopper and I doubt you will see another one like her, irreplaceable in my mind. 

Team Heron was contracted when Suzuki took a break from a works GP team, and had some significant success with factory support.  They even commissioned a series of – carbon fiber chassis and swingarms – which gave the fire breathing lump a stable if all-enclosing platform.  Suzuki’s Skoal livery was a tribute to the team’s efforts, and appeared on a few different models.  Nice to hear this example is ridden regularly, and looks so great even so.  The ask is right up there and the post-transaction costs won’t be insignificant, but could be a smart investment given the current market.

Czech All the Boxes: 1990 Jawa 350 Twin Sport

Another interesting option in the sub 400 category is this rare little gem – a BRAND NEW Jawa 350. Offered by a seller in Portland, Oregon, this Twin Sport throwback is a two stroke parallel twin straight out of Czechoslovakia. The story of Jawa is an interesting one, with Czech businessman Frantisek Janecek purchasing the motorcycle division of German manufacturer Wanderer in 1929 (the automobile division of Wanderer became part of the Horch-DKW-Audi concern known as Auto Union in 1932, which today is known simply as Audi). Frantisek named the new company JAWA, using the first two letters of his last name along with the first two letters in Wanderer. Perhaps best known in the US for speedway style dirt track racing (Bruce Penhall fans, anyone?), Jawa continues in operation, building mopeds, smaller motorcycles and a Rotax-powered 650cc model. Some models are built under license directly in India. Sadly, the brand remains most populous in Latin America and Europe, and is not imported into the US.

While a 1990 model, this 350 really hasn’t changed much from the 1970s. Witness the front and rear drum brakes, laced onto robust spoke wheels (which is traditionally a more forgiving setup than cast wheels for marginal/unimproved roads). Suspension is basic hydraulic front fork (conventional) with twin shocks in the rear. The parallel twin is a two stroke, and as basic as it is reliable. Air-cooled for simplicity, the 350 utilizes a single carburetor and is estimated to pump out 27-30 cracking ponies. Power is transmitted via a 4-speed transmission and chain final drive. Weight appears to be 330-ish pounds dry.

Not much info from the seller here, other than the bike appears to be in great cosmetic shape and looking like it was parked indoors for some time. No oil stains, grease, scratches or dents are noticeable, and all the pieces seem to be in place – right down to the nifty mudguard protecting the front of the engine case from rocks and debris strewn up by the front wheel. The odometer seems to verify the “new” status as well, showing only 1 kilometer and change on the metric clocks. Already imported into the US (although no note on title, licensing, etc), this unique 350 might have spent all its existence in a man cave. Who wouldn’t want to pour in some premix and seat those piston rings in properly??! Check (Czech?) out all of the details here, but be warned that new and unique does not come cheaply – the Buy It Now is a rather steep $8,500. The seller appears to be open to offers, so gaze at the photos and then give it your best shot. Good luck!!

I’m gonna come clean on this one . . . When I first saw it I was 110% stoked and thought it might be the Holy Grail survivor of RS250’s, but then I watched this at :28 seconds in.

Ooops! Did I really just type what’s in the grey matter? Sorry!

Push Play – 1987 Yamaha YSR50 with 708 Miles !

Update – Sold to a reader a few hours after posting on RSBFS, but still fun to look at…

Never going to be the only bike in the garage, but the YSR50 might just win the smiles-per-cc sweepstakes.  Today’s has somehow maintained all its DOT required equipment over the years, which seems to have protected the scale fairings like a force field.

Overdone in a tongue-in-cheek way, the YSR50 had a disk brake up front and five-speed trans to go with its regulated 49 cc’s and 7 hp.  With its perimeter frame, full fairing and faux underseat exhaust ports, it’s as close to a YZR500 as some of us might ever get.

This YSR is a little bit of perfection, with not even the usual roll-around scuffs.  Seeming oversized turn signals and mirrors have warded off evil spirits, and a nice repaint doesn’t hurt either.  Not sure about the seller’s title reasoning, but at this age and engine size a bill of sale would likely suffice.  Comments from the eBay auction:

 
The YSR50 has been displayed in my collection for the last 12 years. I have decided to sell it. 
Bike is sold with a signed title but NOT IN MY NAME. Title is still in original owners name and I wanted it to stay that way. ONE OWNER. 33 Years
The reason the bike has ONLY 708 miles I believe is because the crank seal was bad on the stator side.
 
I brought to to my shop and took the entire bike back apart for cleaning. 
 
The top end looked great (Standard Bore). I resealed it back up with a new top end gasket set. I removed both side covers and put new crank seals and clutch plates in.
 
While apart I replaced the reeds, carb kit, fork seals and gaskets
 
Still has the hard to find original – Nut Pad and Tool Kit (looks new)
Starts with a couple kicks.  Handle bars are straight 
 
Seat , back and nut pad looks great
 
Rims / Tires look very good but are old with cracks. Could be originals
 
Plastics look great except one spot the size of a quarter where the upper fairing meets the lower fairing. where one of the screws hold it together(hard to see because large white washer covers it up)
 
Exhaust looks great 
 
Brakes rear work great – front is full of fluid but can’t get it to bleed
 
Tank is bright and shiny inside.
 
New air filter.  New Battery
 
New Windscreen from New Zealand – have old one but has a small crack
 
Calamari Rear fender.  Forks are perfect
 
Warning labels look good.  Decals look great
No leaks  – Gas tank and carb is empty and cleaned.
 
Have bike currently in my office and don’t want fumes.
 
All silver, and white parts repainted and clear coated.

A little late to get it under the tree unless you’re down near Dallas, but this looks to be a super example at just* a supersport  buy-in.  And judging from the group picture, might be the sharpest two-stroke in the collection.

Angrier Bees: 1984 Yamaha RZ 350

The Yamaha RZ350 is just one of those bikes. It wasn’t particularly rare or super fast in the day (in stock form it struggled to compete with the 550s of the day). It wasn’t even super irresponsible for a two stroke, harboring lean burn technology, oil injection, an exhaust power valve to broaden the torque curve, air injection and – of course – the all important catalytic converters nestled in the exhaust pipes. This was the last street-going two stroke sport bike officially imported into all 50 of these United States, making it a milestone machine. The years have been very kind to the legend that is the RZ, and with excellent examples in short supply the values are reflected appropriately.

Known as the RD350LC in other markets, the RZ350 was pretty standard Yamaha two stroke fare; a liquid cooled parallel twin with reed valve induction and dual carbs. The YPVS allowed the exhaust port to raise and lower depending upon revs, boosting power in the lower end of the RPM range, where two strokes typically suffer the most. A single shock rear suspension, triple disk brakes and minimalist bodywork (including the cafe fairing) completed the tidy package. These were neat and unique when new, showed up in droves at local racetracks, and experienced a “dime a dozen” type of mentality with riders and collectors. They were used, abused, and used some more. Today, they are still relatively plentiful in hacked up condition. But finding a good one – a clean, well-loved example – is getting harder and harder to do. And prices are reflecting the rarity.

Up for auction is my beautiful 1984 Yamaha RZ 350 with matching frame and engine case serial numbers. The bike has 15,692 miles.

This bike has an interesting history. It was owned by Bobby J from Bobby J’s Yamaha in Albuquerque, NM. It is the oldest Yamaha dealer in the US. If you go on youtube, there are videos about Bobby J’s Yamaha and Bobby J himself.

I purchased it from one of his retired salesmen in around 2010. I kept it for a couple of months and then sold it to a friend of mine who I told that if you ever need to sell it then call me. A few years later he did so I purchased the bike back in 2013.

In the time that he owned it, the engine was rebuilt by Jason Perdue, the owner of SMR, in Santa Fe, NM. Jason has built many RZ 350s and Banshees. The engine has about 1200 miles since it was rebuilt. I don’t ride the bike very often, and I am working on selling a few bikes out of my collection as I have too many.

The bike was tuned for sea level by Chuck “Supertune” Quenzler of Team Scream Racing in Clearwater Florida. He was impressed with the bike to say the least.

The bike has a 370 big bore kit. It has been ported by Jason at SMR, has V-Force reeds, stock carbs with a K&N filter, Toomey pipes, ATK fork brace, rebuilt front end with Progressive springs, rear Works remote reservoir shock, and good Avon roadrider tires. I believe that the radiator shroud is either Canadian or European since it does not have any holes for reflectors. I got it off of ebay because I liked the way it looked better than the stocker.

It also includes the tool kit. I do not have the owner’s manual. I do have some stock pipes and the stock air box that will go with the bike.

The bike has always been garaged and well taken care of. The body is beautiful shape with no repairs. It has original paint with no dents or dings. No corrosion. No cracks in the plastic. The paint is beautiful as the photos show. Windscreen is original with the sticker still on it. Chin fairing is beautiful.

This is a beautiful RZ for your collection or your Sunday rider. No disappointments here.

The bike is ready to go. It has a clear Florida title in my name.

This bike looks to be in great condition. Collectors may chagrin the mods, but the RZ responds to all the great wake up sauce as any other smoker. That means an overbore (or big bore kit), raising the compression ratio, porting, expansion chambers, etc. It looks like this beauty has had a few of those mods done to it, stoking the hive full of even angrier bees; it looks and sounds like it is ready to to poke the four stroke bear. Gemology – 2006 Aprilia RS125 Jorge Lorenzo with 7 Miles !

Almost the right size to sneak in behind the Xmas tree, Aprilia’s RS125 is ready for an up-and-coming rider, or maybe one trying to unlearn an over-reliance on the right wrist.  Today’s is the salient Jorge Lorenzo commemorative with just roll-around-the-showroom miles.

2006 Aprilia RS125 Spain’s No. 1 Edition for sale on eBay 

Aprilia built on its RS125 knowledge since the model originated in 1992, and added a lot of appointments for 2006.  Rotax made the NikaSil lined two-stroke, claiming 28hp at 10,500 rpm.  Except for where the steering head is boxed in, castings for the alloy chassis are open on the inboard side, but substantially webbed for rigidity.  Inverted 40mm forks end in a radial brake mount, with a single 320mm disk and four piston caliper.  Borrowing on the RSV1000’s aura, the wheels and fairing look like they were left in the dryer a bit too long.  Weight with a half-full tank should be under 300 lbs.

Not much to know about a bike with under 10 miles, but the ask for a 125 might get a request for some close-ups, and the Alberta dealer does offer to have a video call with a prospective buyer.  Seen with blue or silver wheels, some aluminum polish will want to be in the new owner’s kit.  Four bars from the eBay auction:

Aprilia RS 125 vintage 2006 is basically new condition, however due to its age we are selling this bike without any warranty or implied conditions.  Therefore this bike is sold as is however we will run up this motorcycle for you if you are seriously interested and or can send you a video of it running if required.

Jorge had already moved up to 250’s when he joined Aprilia, but his back to back 250cc championships deserved a tribute.  In his subsequent nine seasons with the factory Yamaha GP team, only his first year was out of the top three.  Retired early like race number 99, it would be surprising if this RS125 hit the rev limiter again.  Maybe a new lease on life would be as a pit lane display bike for a gentleman racer with a well broken-in Aprilia race bike.

1990 Suzuki RGV250SP2. My rare RGV250SP2 which I have owed since March 1991 is up for sale from my collection. As the second owner I imported this bike from the original owner back in 1991 and therefore it’s not all corroded and oxidized like many Japanese imports of this age. For those who are no familiar with this rare SP2 model, it was only made by Suzuki in limited numbers for a few years. It’s a Japanese SP model bike with one big difference. The SP2 model came with the same gear ratios as the street non SP model. It did not have the tall SP racing transmission. But everything else was identical to the SP1 model, dry clutch, bigger carbs, and fully adjustable suspension, used on the SP1. I have spent a small fortune on upgrades for this bike. Many upgrades that are no longer available.

I totally rebuilt the engine less than 1,000 miles ago. New Pistons, rings, Crank seals, water pump, dry clutch upgrades, VHM O-ring high performance heads. The cylinders were ceramic recoated and lightly ported by my old friend Stan Stephens back in the UK. Ceramic coating is harder and more durable than Nikasil plating. Aftermarket billet power valves installed. It has the bigger SP carburetors on it with the Suzuki full SP jetting kit set up. Air box modifications. I put a UK made Pace high performance radiator on. This is a thicker high quality racing Rad. Not some cheap Chinese aftermarket product. That with silicone radiator hoses. Bike has a full power UK black box. All with a beautiful set of Lomas stainless steel pipes with carbon silencers.

For handling I installed a Tyga triple clamp, Sansei handle bars, racing 300mm Italian made front disk with 6 piston calibers, and 19mm front master cylinder. Brakes are phenomenal. Front suspension is fully adjustable and had been reworked by PPS. The back has a beautiful Penske fully adjustable rear shock, Wave rear disk. I just rebuilt the rear caliber, steel braided brake lines throughout. Installed, at a high price, custom made light weight magnesium rims front and back from Dymag. Tyga rear sets, steering damper, were added along with a new MPH speedo! It has almost unused Michelin Pilots tires on it, that are old and should be replaced.

I recently did a brake fluid flush, trans oil change, new coolant, new plugs, new battery, New petcock, Ultra sound carb cleaning. Bike was sitting in my collection and hasn’t been used in years.

Bike has a lot of titanium, stainless and aluminum nuts and bolts, Carbon front and rear fenders, Aluminum front fairing stay.

I have a Tyga unpainted rear tail section on it. Custom shock reservoir holder. The front fairing are the originals from 1990! They have some chips and minor cracks in them. Not the best of shape but still fine. Tank has a small ding in it that was there when I bought the bike in 1991. I was going to put a new Tyga front fairing on it. Have it all pained to look like a museum piece, but decided after 10’s of thousands of dollars, I’m not spending any more on I bike I no longer ride. It needs to go to someone who will appreciate and ride it.

This bike is ready fast with some of the best aftermarket parts that were available at that time. It’s ready to go and comes with a current valid California plate and title! I loved riding around on this bike, but after 31 years it’s another bike in my collection that I must sell. At my age, I’m getting to the point I’ll be hauling round on a motorized wheelchair rather than on a super-fast 250!!

 

I think I need a cigarette now, but I must confess- I usually look down my nose at heavily modified machines. However, not so much on this one. What’s different you ask? Lets start with the drool worthy Dymag wheels. Wooooo doggy!
How about we throw in a race worthy Penske shock, ceramic coated cylinders and full power chip? Had enough yet? Okay, it’s outfitted with some tasty TYGA carbon and aerospace grade aluminum bits and bobs too.

These make around 60hp, but the power band to make that power resides in a pretty narrow stretch of RPM’s. Usually, hitting between the 8-11,000 range for peak power. I bet those Lomas Shotgun’s scream “FU!” when you get on the pipe 🙂
