1995 Ducati Supermono For Sale on eBay!

I said it 11 years ago and I’ll say it again- The Supermono is the ultimate collectable sport bike. There’s not a zero mile RC30, RC45, Superleggra, D16, Bimota, GSX-RR, Honda DB5 or YSR more valuable or sought after. The Supermono is at THE top of the heap- Change my mind.

I know some of you have already started arm chair quarter backing me, hammering your keyboards and screaming “THERE WERE 67 BUILT YOU BAFOON!” Yes, 67 total, but only 27 built from 1995-97 with the larger 572cc motors and shotgun style Termi canister. Ducati started the serial numbers over when they increased from the smaller 550cc motor. That makes 1995 #12 more rare than 1993 #12! Wouldn’t you agree?

Weighing in right at 300#’s wet- these are tiny machines. The wheel base and seat height are about the same as the Honda NSR250’s. Ducati achieved the 300# figure by liberally using magnesium and carbon fiber where they could and a dry clutch. I am in love with the green cast magnesium triple clamps and engine case covers.

Okay, so from that description I have to assume this one’s been around the track a few times. Obviously, if the motor’s been rebuilt, #12 wasn’t a garage queen and has some hours on it. Is it an ex Jeff Nash race bike and spares or did the previous owners enjoy their little slice of heaven?
I can also safely assume if you’re actively bidding on it you have already contacted the seller and got the skinny on it.

At the time of writing this one is up to $55,300 with 43 bids by 18 bidders and 6 days to go. It has also garnered the attention of 218 dreamers watching it.

I fully expect this one will have to creep well into the 100’s to shake the reserve loose.

British Bruiser: 1996 Triumph Daytona Super III

When ever people talk about Triumph motorcycles they seem to gravitate to the Steve McQueen vintage bikes, or the neo classic bikes sold today.  Far too often the wonderful Daytona line from the 90s is overlooked.  This is unfortunate as they offer a really interesting option for buyers that might be focused on ZX9 or CBR900s.

The best of the 900cc Daytona came in the form of the Super III.  Making 115hp with three cylinders and 9500 rpm the Super III was not short on performance, even if it was criticized for carrying too much weight at 465 pounds.  Records state that 805 were produced between 1993 and 1996.   These rebounded from being deemed too heavy to be a sports bike by gaining a reputation for being an outstanding long distance and fast motorcycle.

Today we are all spoiled by how much carbon is used on standard bikes, but in the 90s that material was still considered fairly exotic.  Certainly not something you find on a factory Japanese bikes from the period.

1995 Triumph Daytona Super III for sale, Rare bike as only 179 or so made it to the states, who knows how many are left. Looks and runs great, Cosworth designed engine, 115 HP, 6 speed transmission, Carbon Fiber bits, Alcon 6 piston front brakes, Keihin Flat-slide carbs, Factory Pro Ignition Advancer, Nology Coils, Sebring Exhaust, The Yuasa battery is about a year old and is always on a tender, I’ve owned the bike for 6 years. I’m getting older now and the riding position is no longer comfortable for me. I start the bike and take it around the neighborhood but it hasn’t been out for a real ride in a while. Tires are good (no cracks)but need replacement due to age, Spark plugs, engine oil, and filter were just replaced, Valve shim clearances were inspected recently and four shims replaced, Fork oil and brake/clutch fluids should probably be replaced before putting bike back into service, No engine leaks whatsoever. $500 non-refundable deposit due with in 48 hours.

Bike is being listed locally.

I do not have the stock exhaust nor the stock carbs.

This specific example appears to be well taken care of and presents well.  Perhaps there is a Triumph expert that is reading this that can shed some light on why one would swap out the stock Mikuni flat slides for Keihin.  Fitment looks OEM with the use of the standard airbox.

Priced with a Buy It Now listing of $5500, a relative bargain when shopping for more pedestrian bikes of this era.  Sure to offer the next owner something unique and usable.  With 19,000 miles on the clocks, the next owner should have no guilt using the bike as intended.

The TZR250 SPR was the culmination of all things before it. The SPR’s have braced black frames, triple 32mm power valves (to skirt the regulations of the day) that consisted of both guillotine and cotton reel designs. The beauty of this design was even though Yamaha downsized the the valves from 36mm to 32mm they were still able to keep the horsepower at 40. That’s not a lot of HP by today’s 4 strokes power output, but it was plenty for Yamaha to eventually win the Suzuka 4 hour endurance race with the SPR.

Here’s what the eBay listing has to say.

Absolutely fantastic example of the last of the 2stroke 250cc Yamaha super sport bikes! Incredibly rare bike that was never sold in the US market during production. Powered by the proven single-axis crank 90-degree V-twin engine that adopted “Triple YPVS” for finely tuned exhaust control, a new type of carburetor (during the 90’s) and a cassette-type wide-ratio transmission. This bike has been on display in a high-end collection for about a year and a half and is ready for a new owner. The bike has recently been started and run for the first time since it was imported

Here are some key features of this bike:

-Fantastic visual condition for a bike that is nearly 30 years old
-Starts easily, and runs great
-Clean PA title! Very rare for this bike to have a US title.
-Fuel tank is spotless
-All lights and horn work properly
-New battery
-Temp gauge or sensor may need to be addressed as the needle did not move during my test ride.
-Only 9513 KM = 5911 Miles
-Tons of tread left on the Rosso II tires
-Minor scuffs on each fairing, small paint repair on edge of front fender and one paint blemish on frame near swingarm pivot

I don’t disagree with the sellers evaluation and description of their machine. I would like to point out that all of my research, friends and GoDuckYou translator tells me SPR’s weren’t produced until 1995. Not that it matters, because it really is a non-issue since SPR’s were never brought stateside. I am very pleased to see it’s titled and ready to roll, but should you pull the trigger on this one I recommend you tread lightly! Parts for these are scarce to non-existent.

I also wanted to mention that I think it’s worth every penny of the asking price because these are rare as rocking horse poop and this example is finer than frogs hair.

You all may or may not now this, but corporate frowns upon us for teeing up more than one bike per day. You know, they want to be consistent and make sure we feed you all a steady diet of bad ass machines. I vaguely remember a memo flying around strictly prohibiting 2 post per day. Something to do with an algorithm, number of views, time on page or some happy horse crap.

I’m just gonna crack open a PBR “Throw a finger in the air, and let me see where you at!”

Hand laid fiberglass solo tail section, larger brakes, 1″ longer swing arm, split 3 spoke wheels and the optional dry clutch equaled 6 pounds lighter than the regular 86 model. These don’t pop up very often and when they do, they usually get snatched up pretty quickly.

Considering the photos aren’t that good and with the vague description anyone interested will be picking up the phone for some more info. This one looks to be promising, but one never knows what lurks beneath on a 35 year old sport bike.

When Rare Is Just Too Common: Bimota SB8K Ultimo

Things are always interesting in the world of rare and exotic motorcycles.  There seems to be an endless stream of things to ogle and dream about.  For many the top of the list is Bimota.  The storied Italian brand has always produced lust worthy motorcycles in low volume.  Over the years they have used many different engine configurations, from many different manufactures, so there is something for everyone.  In the late 90s Bimota tool the Suzuki TL1000R V Twin and decided it would be perfect for their new SB8R and slightly more intense SB8RS models.  These bikes featured a unique carbon fiber frame section as well as top tier suspension for the day.  In 2000 Bimota was racing an SB8R in WSBK with Anthony Gobert.  The high water mark of the year was a race win at Philip Island.  To celebrate this success, Bimota released the SB8K as an updated version of the SB8R.

The SB8K was the end of the Suzuki powered Bimota era.  Details are scarce on exactly how many were built, but there is no doubt the production run was in the tens, and not hundreds of bikes built.  To make things even more confusing, Bimota also had a few variants of the SB8K.  The “standard”, Gobert, and Santamonica edition round out the field.  Make no mistake, all of these were rare, expensive and interesting options in period.  One can only imagine how amazing it would have been to source one of these bikes new.  But what might be even more amazing is that it seems that there was a market even higher up the food chain.  Apparently there were people that saw the SB8K as too common, or not focused enough, so the SB8K Ultimo was created.

The aptly named Ultimo was dripping with even more high performance and exotic components.  It was the brainchild of the Japanese importer for Bimota, Redbro Racing.  They had a history of turning the wick up on other Bimota for the Japanese market.  For just over 6 million Yen, you got even better Ohlins forks, upgraded brakes, and a host of internal engine modifications.  The Motor breaths through a Moto Corsa Ti exhaust system that is sure to please the ears.

Only 10 SB8K Ultimo bikes were ever built, for the buyer that wanted something very special. This bike has Marchesini magnesium wheels, Brembo mono block brakes, full Ohlins front and rear suspension, Ohlins steering damper. Stack dash, modified ECU, High compression forged pistons, 12:1. High lift cams, Titanium silencers. (moto corsa), Alcantara fabric seat, full carbon body work, tank, sub frame all as standard equipment on this model. The new price when released in Japan was 6,000,000Yen.(39,000pounds) Essentially brand new 22 year old bike, the dash says 38km traveled, but according to Stack, the dash will never read zero as km are added to the dash whilst testing. The Stack dash can be scrolled through many different screens and setting by the pass button on the LHS bar, very cool. I estimate the bike has done 3km. The SB8R isn’t even in the same league as this model. With forks, calipers and wheels alone worth over 10,000Pounds. The bike has been fully serviced and runs like a dream. Send me an email and I can send you a link to watch the bike running on you tube. The bike is located in New Zealand. Included in the buy now price is crating the bike and transport to most major ports. London, LA. etc. Price does not include local import or port charges or insurance. This is a very special, rare bike, running the beautiful TL1000R engine you wont be disappointed adding this one to your collection. It sounds and looks amazing.

In the late 90s and early 2000s it was not uncommon to see owners modifying their vehicles, or well known shops to do a limited run of in house custom builds.  Many of these builds have either not aged well, or have not survived long enough to be collectable.  This example here represents a chance to experience a really interesting period in time again with essentially a brand new bike.  The bike seems perfectly preserved and would be well suited for a static collection, or returned to the road for enjoyment.  The seller appears to be no stranger to the bike, or transporting around the world.  This would be a wonderful benefit to a potential buyer, almost as much as the seller’s offer to crate and ship the bike to your local port.  With anything this rear, it is hard to put an exact value on it.  Currently listed at just under twenty thousand British pounds.  This price point is not for everyone, but when you think about how special this bike is it is hard to think of a better way to spend the money.

After 2 days of mental Tug-O-War- here it is. I say “here it is” because I know some of you have been reckless eyeballing it on eBay and likely saying “Why haven’t those slugs over at RSBFS.com presented this?”
Well, rest assured, I’ve been pouring over the pictures and researching a few things because lets face it- some of you are RC30 Guru’s and would call me out for getting it wrong 😉

We all know they’re rare, expensive, have fiberglass bodywork, came stock with funky wheels sizes, aluminum tanks and a sexy Elf/Honda single sided swing arm. Nothing really new there so, lets dive in.

What I like:
-Low Mileage
-It’s a RC30 (duh!)
-The sweet Termi exhaust
-HRC 17″ x 6″ rear wheel- The Holy Grail of RC30 parts
-Seller has the stock exhaust
-Seller has the original 18″ wheel

 

Honda rc30
This bike has only 2000 miles. I’m the second owner. I Purchased this bike in 1991 and I kept the bike in my living room For all these years. It’s in excellent shape except the body has some damage from storage- it can be easily fixed because the faring is made of fiberglass from the factory. The bike was never raced or abused.
The paint has some bubbles. Mechanically the bike runs great. Currently, the bike has a termignoni carbon fiber exhaust and a 17×6 HRC rear wheel. I will include the original 18×5.5 original wheel, the original exhaust, the race stand, manual and tools. I will not ship the bike- local pickup only

 


 
What I’m not so sure about:
-The seller states “It’s in excellent shape”
-The paint is a mess
-The lower fairings and tail section are less than desirable condition
-Aftermarket front turn signals
-The HRC sticker on the upper fairing
-What’s behind the Michelin Man sticker and 3 layers of white duct tape
-An aftermarket rear sprocket on a bike with so few miles
-A $45,000 motorcycle being presented without being detailed
 

History tells us that RC30’s did have an issue with the lower header coming in contact with the lower right side fairing. We know it caused some discoloration and in some extreme cases even distorting the fiberglass. The Michelin Man sticker seems to be in that location.
The very nice HRC Honda sticker on the tail section is obviously covering some damage, but I’m curious as to how there is (what appears to be) red vinyl over the sticker? Perhaps the tail section has damage over a larger area than what the HRC sticker is covering?

I’m in no way a paint & body expert, but one has to believe it wouldn’t be a cheap process to bring the body panels back to museum quality. I know the factory fiberglass wasn’t super smooth and the finish wasn’t the best, but that’s part of the RC30 nostalgia- right?

For me, this one is stuck in a “grey” area- It’s priced too high not to be near perfect, but it does have the extremely desirable HRC 17″ x 6″ rear wheel, Termi, low miles and the OEM spares. If you put the money into repairing the body work, you’d have an extremely expensive well equipped RC30 with repaired body work.

Would you pay $45,000, call it a 15 footer and ride it or does the low mileage warrant a full blown resto?

Underappreciated, Homologation: The 2001 Ducati 748R

Little can be said about the Ducati 916-996-998 generation of superbikes that has not already been said.  We all know that they are among the most beautiful motorcycles ever created.  Clearly an instant classic and cemented their place in history.  They are a dream bike of many.  Even in standard for there is undeniable appeal.  This also holds true for the many special high performance versions sold over the years.  In order to qualify for some racing classes, manufactures are required to produce a specific number of road going motorcycles.   In the case of Ducati these homologation specials are badged as R models.

When talking Ducati and racing, one can be excused for thinking it all revolves around the World Superbike Championship and forget that the smaller displacement classes offered up some amazing motorcycles.  Take the Ducati 748, as a whole it should have a broad appeal.  An adequate amount of power for road use by mere mortals, and the stunning looks of the larger bother.  And yet the 748 seems shunned with prices lagging well behind a comparable larger engine bike.   This trend also extends to the 748R.

Built in much lower numbers than the 996 and 998 R variants, the 748R featured a plethora of upgrades over the stander offerings.  Ti valves and rods, carbon airbox and a bespoke shower fuel injection system round out the engine.  Ohlins forks and shock mean handling to match the looks.  These even have the amazing story of not really being sold for road use, even though many found ways to don plates.

From the Seller’s eBay Listing:

  • 2001 Ducati 748R – 700 Original Miles – Street Legal 
  • Extremely rare superbike with only 100 imported into the USA.  Most “R” bikes were never titled and street legal and a lot were since crashed and no longer in existence.  
  • Fully street legal with current Rhode Island registration. Rhode Island titled noting 770 actual miles and “748R” as shown in photo. 
  • A true collectors “R” bike with full Ohlins suspension, Formula One style overhead shower injectors in larger Ducati factory carbon fiber airbox. Titanium valves and connecting rods. Marchesini magnesium wheel set. Numbered triple tree.  
  • Last started 2 years ago and ran perfect. Engine was fogged and fuel drained. Bike has since been stored in my house on display. 
  • 16,950 FIRM, NO OFFERS OR TRADES ACCEPTED. Local pickup preferred but will ship if buyer sets up logistics. 
  • I reserve the right to end the auction early for any reason as it is also advertised in other locations. 
  • Payment via CASH or BANK WIRE only.

The $16,950 Buy It Now price has yet to be hit.  That might be a large sum of money for a 748, it is peanuts compared to a 996R these days.  The seller clearly thinks the world of the bike as it is seen in what appears to be his living room.  Too bad the seller could only find a potato to take the pictures with, surely potential buyers will want to see the bike in better light.  With a claimed 700 miles this is sure to be one of the better examples to be available at any time.

Whacky Wednesday Mixed Bag-O-Bikes!

Last night, I was kicking it and lounging around, sipping on a cold snack with some time to kill. The normal hot-bed of rare sport bike supply was a little slow so, I stretched my short legs and ventured out on the dark world wide web in search of some tasty eye candy for all our highly regarded followers. I have to admit, I didn’t have high expectations, but my dung luck would prove me wrong once again.
