1990 Suzuki GSX-R 750: The L O N G Stroke Returns

So, I’m a little older and little fatter now than I was back in 1990. It’s also possible I had a Kenny Powers mullet and wrap around Oakley’s, but that can’t be proven by any of you gear heads.

Look at that side shot- it’s a thing of beauty! All I knew in 1990 was it looked a hell of a lot faster than my mullet and 87 750 Ninja! Plus, all of the kewl kids were riding them so, it had to be the one to get. Can I interest you in a tired Ninja?

1990 was a fantastic year for Suzuki GSX-R’s and my beloved Oakley’s. Suzuki revamped the air and oil-cooled power plant and returned to their long stroke 70mm x 48.7mm design as it proved to be a better race platform than the previous years short stroke design. And, if we’re being completely honest here- Who doesn’t like a good L O N G S T R O K E . . . motor?

From the seller:

The 1990 Suzuki GSX-R 750 (L) Slingshot is probably the best of the oil-cooled models while retaining the classic dual headlight, flat head front. It’s a stunning and iconic bike, back then and now.

This one shows 14,982 miles on the clock (713 miles per year- WTF!) and appears to be very well kept.

I’m the 3rd owner and put <10,000 mi during my 21 years of ownership. The bike was low-sided at low speed in fall 2000 and subsequently restored to its current condition (right side panels and front cowling replaced). Bike comes with original rear indicators, left mirror, original Suzuki air filter, two oil filters, tank bra, Clymer manual, and misc. parts. The bike sports a Vance & Hines header/muffler and was jetted for the original air filter and air box.

I like that the seller is up front about the repairs, but from the images, it was done the correct way and should be a non-issue. The seller is also upfront about his bottom dollar.

Reservation price is $7,000.

At the time of writing, the auction was still at the starting price of $6,000, but since we know the reserve, you know where you need to be if you want to park this 115hp classic in your garage.

1987 Yamaha YSR 50 with a scant 1.9 miles!

Stealing a line from Kiss- “You wanted the best, you got the best, the hottest un-used bike in the world…. Yamaha YSR 50!”
(Did you play the guitar intro to Detroit Rock City in your head like I did?) I know, that’s both corny and a bit of a stretch, but this little fella has A LOT to offer the right person and I mean A L O T!

If the 1.9 mile headline didn’t grab your attention surely this little tidbit from the seller will-

This is a 2 mile never titled YSR50. Yes the bike has 1.9 miles on it. Prev owned by Brock Yates the founder and screen writer of the Cannonball Run movie starring Burt Reynolds. This bike is a piece of history with documentation to match. This was the bike that hung on the wall in the Cannonball pub in New York for years.

I’m not going to deep dive into the previous owner and all of that because the seller has it well documented, but for us that grew up in the 80’s, it definitely adds to the fun factor of this machine.

It’s no secret I love Yamaha’s and I love them even more when they’re dressed in red and white. The little YSR’s are high on the fun factor scale, but with their 49.3cc 2-stroke single and 38 mph top speed rank a little low on the performance scale. Granted, I’m not sure I’d want to go faster than 38 mph, but I would like to get to it a little quicker.

Designed to look like it’s much, much larger and more powerful RZ500 sibling, Yamaha packed a lot into the YSR’s such as a disc brake up front, a 5 speed transmission and a full set of lights. Did I mention it’s a two-stroke 🙂

As can be expected after hanging on a bar wall for a few years, this one will need some TLC, but by the looks of it, it won’t take much to bring it back to showroom condition. The seller states it’s not in running condition and is being sold in “as is” condition. I suspect this will be the preferred condition for most serious buyers because they will want to bring it back to life under their own watchful eyes.

Fluids are in bike and was running approx 6 months ago however wont currently start. Carbs prob need cleaning.
Also the fuel door seems to be stuck. Key does go in and slightly turns however wont unlatch. The bike remains untouched as it hung in the bar. Still dusty and has spider webs on it. I did not want to clean it and tried to preserve its heritage.

Again, it shouldn’t take much to bring it back, but you will have to bring some serious cash to the table to park this one in your collection. It’s being offered at $15,000 B.I.N. or you can submit an offer. I’m thinking this one will sell because unused anything from 1987 is far and few between and when you tack on the history of this machine . . . well, it simply makes it more fun.

I like how the seller has this one listed. They’re offering it for the purist out there “as is” for $12,500 or they’re offering it in “road ready” condition, with the above mentioned updates performed, for $14,500. I’m thinking if you went with the higher priced option, slapped on some Heli bars (are those still a thing?) and a tank bag, coupled with the 5.8 gallon fuel tank you’d have a pretty good day tripping machine. Not to mention, you’d get chatted up at every stop along your route because it’s so freaking sexy.

As with most 24ish year old motorcycles they’ve been bumped and might have a few character marks and #12 is no exception. However, the seller has your back on this one and is offering his support if you wanted to make it blemish free before taking delivery.

The seller states

2 small cosmetic defects (see pictures). I have the red paint and the proper decal for the repair. I also have experience painting Bimotas.  (Check out the gallery photos for the other small blemish.)

And there you have it! You can order it as is or in pristine, road worthy condition. I think the SB6R has aged well and deserves to be ridden! What do you think? Ride it or keep it all original?

Oh, hey RSBFS.com readers!  I would like to make you aware there is a bit of hazing going on at the corporate RSBFS.com offices.  You know, being the new guy and all Dan, Donn and Mike told me I had to start small and work my way back up to the real meat and potatoes and prove my worth (again).  You know- “Get my feet wet”.   Not being one to back down from a good challenge I went off in search of something to blog about.  Guess what?  I landed one!

Now, before you start throwing stuff at me, hear me out…   In some cases, “rare” is in the eye of the beholder- whether it is a piece of Prime Beef, a limited run Italian twin or a one year only Honda 50cc screamer.  In this particular case, it’s the later- a 5 speed, Honda 2 stroke screamer!  Food delivery anyone?

Okay, I’ll get down to business.  The Honda MB5 was imported for one year and one year only.  1982 was the year and you could park it in your driveway for a mere $598 bucks!  That would be steal in today’s market, but as it sits, this one has an asking price of $3,000.  What that will get you is a very nice looking 39 year old motorcycle loaded with some pretty nice 18″ Comstar wheels, business in the front disc brake and a party in the rear drum brake, and a 5 speed gear box.  I would like to come clean on this one and let you know it’s currently not in running order.  However, according to my long time buddy Steve@Speedwerks, “If your 2 stroke won’t start you have a gas, air or spark problem.”  Sounds simple enough right?

You can see by the pictures it is in very good condition I have the title it does not run seems to have some kind of electrical issue has perfect compression but no spark

I think this one is fun, neat and pretty trick with those Comstar wheels.  Is it worth the asking price?  I’m not sure, but I’m guessing you can jump over to HondaMB5.com and find out real quick what it’s worth and while you’re there, you can probably find the answer to why it won’t start.  If you make the drive to Delaware to pick this one up you can always stop by and have Steve look at it.

Oh, I forgot to mention it only has 1053 miles on it!

Update 10.30.2012: This listing was first published in September of 2009 and has reappeared on eBay from what appears to be the same seller. The opening bid is up a bit at $25k but is also listed with a buy-it-now of $37k. Currently no bids with just less than 2 days to go. Thanks to Doug for the original post on this bike! -dc

I posted a 1999 F4 a few days ago that had been upgraded to look like this bike.  As my previous post stated “Oro” means gold in Italian.  All of the gold bits on this F4 Oro are Magnesium with gold finish, thus the badge of Oro.  I think these are pure eye candy and am envious of anyone who owns one of these beauties.  This MV Agusta F4 750 Oro is #286 of 300, located in Miami and is listed for sale on eBay for $22,000 with no reserve or buy it now.  So, it is possible that you could own this for $22,000.

I just had to throw up some large pictures this time so everyone can see the detail, carbon fiber bits and Ohlins components. 

This super rare example of MV Agusta’s premiere motorcycle is one of only a hand full that made it to the USA. Most were coveted by celebrities like Jay Leno and Lyle Lovett who were able to get their hands on them. Only 300 were produced in total! It was featured in 2000 at “The Art of the Motorcycle” exhibit at the Guggenheim Museum in NY. Wesley Snipes rode this mode in the movie “The Art of War”. This bike has only 1,200 miles and has never been titled. Comes with Certificate of Origin. Ah yes…. It’s been 10 long years since BBoz was in his prime and killing it on the factory L&M Ducati. The 998’s are getting a little long in the tooth and the Bostrom editions are getting on about as well as Bens pork chops. Nonetheless, I still have a soft spot for these and I will probably never grow tired of them (or the Bayliss edition for that matter)

A flamed paint job makes anything faster right? It must add at least 5hp and if you don’t believe that then you have to admit it looks good on top of the carbon fiber fairings that were standard on the 155.

I like this one a lot because it has all of the collector accessories and it’s still sporting the original Dunlop hoops. But, then again, what would you expect from a 920 mile LE Ducati?

Up for auction is this 1994 Kawasaki ZX-7R Ninja. The bike does need some tlc but it is the rare M vin race replica edition. The M model came with a lot of Kawasaki factory race parts installed on it. The engine has higher compression, bigger cams, 39mm flat slide carbs, a close ratio 6 speed transmission and a slipper clutch. It has fully adjustable front and rear suspension with a remote reservoir rear shock and an adjustable swing arm. This model also comes with a factory solo seat and an aluminum fuel tank. This bike has 15121 miles on it. It sat for a while so it could probably use a good tune up. It has a Vance & Hines exhaust system on it. It looks like it has been laid over before but it didn’t get the seat cowl. I believe the fairing is the same as the L model so it shouldn’t be that hard to round up or you can buy new ones at bike bandit. The blinkers are missing but the wiring is still there. Please look at all of the photos before bidding. This is a really neat older sport bike that is a piece of Kawasakis racing history.

I agree with the seller 100% and then some, but I couldn’t help but chuckle just a little at “It looks like it has been laid over before, but it didn’t get the seat cowl.” Nonetheless, it is rare and by my dealings on RSBFS.com the M models have been the most elusive of Kawasaki’s Homologation models.

Yes, it’s been around the block and may have paid a visit to the curb… or two, but as I mentioned here exactly 1 billion times before- My beloved zx7r Ninja Turtles are awesome machines and beneath the rough exterior lies one bad ass machine!

I know we have a few Ninja whores that follow the site and all of them will be able to see the potential that this M1 has to offer…. well, except our long time follower Joey. Heck, I bet our buddy from Nebraska could whip this one into shape in no time and have it on display before his next bike show.

Yes, parts are hard to find. Yes, I know that it looks like all body parts look to have been touched by the curb with exception to the front and rear fender, but you have to look beyond those minor details. I don’t think this would be a Barber display piece, but it could definitely be a bitch’n ride for a bald, mullet sporting, beer gutted fella such as myself. If I only had a few extra Benjamins lying around…

Shhhhh, don’t tell anyone, but I’ve hijacked RSBFS.com- That’s right- dd is back in the saddle for a few days and while Dan da’ Man is in the closet trying to remove the duct tape and rope Mike, Ian, Rem, Andrew, Jared and I are gonna have a little fun. Can you say Charlie Sheen shenanigans? Okay, so maybe hookers and blow wouldn’t be so good, but we’ll keep it focused on the good stuff for sure.
