Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace will cough up examples of Suzuki’s thundering, hairy-chested v-twin superbike bruiser if you really look, but they’re almost never worth a second glance. Generally, they’re wrecked, stretched, rattle canned or all three, and more often than not have been without a title since the Bush administration. The 1999 Suzuki TL1000R you see here is none of those things. In fact, if you’re looking for one, this might be your stop.

It’s a two-owner bike that has been ridden enough to show it was maintained and the bugs were duly dealt with. It looks clean enough to eat off of, and has been treated to an Ohlins rear damper, in place of the notorious factory piece. The seller says it has Penske springs front and rear. It also has Jardine exhaust cans, switched cooling fans, a Power Commander and a toggle switch for diagnostics. The paperwork for the suspension work is present, and the bike comes with a shop manual.

The TL1000R’s history as a race bike is, excuse the pun, checkered, as it didn’t quite measure up to contemporary Ducatis and Honda’s RC51 when it came time to put up or shut up. But the bikes don’t look like anything else on the road at the time, and are known as wonderful, brawny streetbikes and track toys. There’s more than enough power to get yourself into serious trouble, but none of the peakiness of an inline four.

I have 1999 Suzuki TL1000R I am looking to sell. I am only second owner and previous owner was a Suzuki mechanic so it has been adult owned it’s whole life. I have Ohlin’s dampener with Penske spring in back, and Penske racing springs up front. Jardine pipes, upgraded grips, a toggle switch in back that will read the problem codes as well as an auxiliary switch to keep the fans on while bike is turned off to cool oil. I recently rebuilt the original clutch so that is new. I also installed a new drive shaft seal as well as the pushrod seal (the pushrod seal is from an SV1000 and installed backwards…much better fit than the original part as this was a known oil leak issue). Also included are 2 head gaskets, 2 fuel pumps, a crank case gasket, full additional wiring harness and CPU’s, and a full set of shims for the bike. (not cheap stuff). It has just shy of 29k miles. I also have all original parts for it including the rotary dampener and springs, original muffler and additional items for maintenance. It will come with the full mechanic book as well as paperwork for suspension upgrades. It has been very well taken care of and runs perfectly with the power commander.

Seller Tim is asking $7,000 for this beast, which is an immaculate, two-owner machine that represents the pinnacle of the nameplate.

Your Inner MM – 2003 Aprilia RS250 Challenge Cup

Aprilia sought to win hearts and minds with its 250cc race series, and had some success though short-lived.  Today’s example is a barely used Challenge Cup ready for some club racing.

Based on their RS250 street bike, the Cup came with Suzuki’s RGV engine, 72-odd hp depending on who asked, and their sculptural alloy chassis with even more exotically shaped magnesium alloy swingarm.  No hours converting it for racing were required, since it shipped with none of the usual DOT requirements.  It did come with oversized front forks and brakes, fully adjustable as was the monoshock.  No starter except your right foot, and the oil injection system was retained to avoid lubrication mishaps.  Despite the full-featured dash, lightness was baked in and it tipped the scales just over 300 lbs.

The Indy owner of this barely used Challenge Cup racer doesn’t say whether they or the original owner commissioned the MS Racing livery, but it’s the spitting image of Melandri’s 2002 championship winner.  Arrow exhaust, Woodcraft controls and saving original bodywork are all classy.  Nearly new at least as per the odometer.  Comments from the eBay auction:

About 1,750 km (1,100 miles) on the odometer. Original, clean/clear Texas title in hand. The bike is fast, in beautiful shape and needs nothing. I can find no indication that the bike has ever touched the ground anywhere but the tires. The paint is not perfect but is excellent and very glossy with only minor blemishes from being 18 years old. Overall, the bike is really clean and well sorted. It has been in my living room or garage every night of its life since getting here, on a battery tender much of the time. The bike starts right up and runs/shifts/brakes and rides wonderfully – no issues at all.

Not sure if Aprilia was advertising their name or hoping the RS250 would be imported legally, but their single-marque series ended after a few years ( as MotoGP got closer to a four-stroke Moto2 ) and their sales have done quite well.  As nice as it is to see a cherry racing machine, it does belong in the fray – and there’s still time.

The Aprilia RS250 is an iconic motorcycle – the last of the modern street-going two strokes. For this, riders everywhere owe a debt of gratitude to… Suzuki. You see, Aprilia is a bit like that BASF commercial decades ago: we don’t build the two stroke, we just make it better. Because that is exactly what happened with the RS250 in the form of the Suzuki RGV250 engine. Sure, the engine cases are complete with “Aprilia Racing” castings, but these were built by Suzuki in their factory, and shipped to Aprilia for final motorcycle assembly. And somehow Suzuki was ok with this competitor arrangement, thereby allowing Aprilia not only to clean up at the racetrack, they also opened up the market for the last real streetable two strokes; a world market Suzuki eventually ceded.

The history does not necessarily mean that the Aprilia RS250 is a Suzuki RGV250 by another name – far from it in fact. While the powerplant comes from the Hamamatsu factory, the rest of the winning package is of Italian descent. The beefy frame is a mixture of aluminum and magnesium – both light and strong. The arrangement maximizes the location and benefits of the narrow V-twin Suzuki unit, just as the asymmetrical swing arm maximizes cornering clearance on the right side due to the exhaust location. In a show of Italian solidarity, the frame is actually manufactured by Benelli for Aprilia. Suspension consists of Showa inverted front forks and a Sachs unit in the rear. And as for the engine, Aprilia provided the airbox, modified the ECU and built model-specific expansion chambers. Figure 70-ish HP for a healthy stocker.

Very rare 1995 Aprilia RS 250 Max Biaggi replica Chesterfield Edition. One of the best-handling bikes ever made, the RS250 was the result of Aprilia working some chassis magic around a tweaked engine from a Suzuki RGV250. I am sure not there are not many left in this condition.

This beautiful example has 6481 kilometers on it. The bike has been part of a very large private collection. Stored properly in a climate-controlled environment. The bike has only been ridden by a long-time motorcycle enthusiast, properly ridden, and maintained. Never down, never seen rain, never tracked. The bike has gone through a recent extensive chassis, nut/ bolt, and tune to insure perfect run ability and safety. Fresh fluids, brakes inspected, all fluids fresh and changed. Fully prepped and detailed.

It has been stored properly so we have ZERO fuel or intake issues. The bike starts first kick!!! While the tires are not cracked, they are older, and we would recommend new tires if you were going to ride it for your safety. Decals are all original and in perfect condition. Everything works as new.

The 250cc two-stroke powerplant produces 69 horsepower and redlines at 12,000rpm. The Chesterfield replica as cosmetic only, but the performance of the base bike does not leave much to be desired. All you need to find some replicas of Biaggi’s Dainese leathers and his AGV helmet. The bike looks like it is going 150MPH sitting here.

While the Aprilia RS250 did not go through substantial mechanical changes throughout its run (1994/5 – 2002), there was a change in running gear (suspension, bodywork design and wheels) post 1998. The rest of the differences across all of the street models was livery. And that is exactly what makes this Max Biaggi Chesterfield-branded example so great: it is an homage to one of the greats. Max is a four-time champion in the 250 class, and won 3 straight for Aprilia in 1994, 1995 and 1996. This replica is fitting for the world class rider he is, and the street bike definitely inherited some of that racing DNA.

Today’s example is a 1995 Aprilia RS250 in the Max Biaggi / Chesterfield sponsored livery. The bike looks to be in fantastic shape – and has just over 4,000 miles showing on the all-kilometer clock. That is not a lot of miles, and the bike shows it. The frame and bodywork look clean and scar-free, and even the brake fluid in the remote reservoir appears as it should. Folks, we are talking about a 25 year old classic motorcycle that can still carve up the canyons with the best of them. With a low power to weight ratio (provided you keep the tach pointed north of 8k), this should be the biggest hoot on two wheels.

Sun Chaser – 2002 Moto Guzzi V11 Le Mans

Moto Guzzi’s most recent Le Mans, the V11 is an interesting mix of brawn and refinement.  Today’s Arizona example has been well-loved and preserved for the next owner.

New owners Aprilia had sporting aspirations for the V11 and commissioned an up-rated two valve engine, claiming 91 hp and 69 ft.-lbs. of torque.  Marelli’s multipoint sequential fuel injection keeps the 9.5-to-1 compression responsive and EPA compliant.  The new six-speed trans had the advantage of shifting more smoothly, and a Paralever-style driveshaft limits the torque reaction of the final drive.  Under the tank there’s the usual steel spine chassis, stretched to a 1490mm wheelbase for stability.  Components are top shelf with USD Marzocchi forks and multi-adjustable Boge monoshock, with typically excellent Brembo brakes.  The upper-only fairing is one of the most protective on any Goose, and is well integrated with the 5.4 gallon tank and hideway pillion at the back.

Said to have been passed from friend to friend, this Le Mans has miles but looks excellent.  Beside fluid and filter changes, little doubt the recent service included a valve adjustment, all the hearty two-valve engine requires to keep on keepin’ on.  The light gold would stand out in greener pastures but wouldn’t raise a sunglassed eyebrow in brighter climes, and almost matches the headers’ patina.  Comments from the eBay auction:

This bike has a known history since new.  It was purchased in 2002 from AzSuperbike in Phoenix.  It has always been owned by 3 friends.   It has never been wrecked, raced or abused.  Cosmetically it is nice enough that I was asked a few weeks ago if it was new.  It’s not, it has some rock chips.  But the paint and cosmetics are very good.  The valve covers were painted gold and the word “LeMans” on the seat cowl has been painted red by a previous owner.  I never changed them as I think they look great. 

Mechanically it has 23,400 miles on the odometer which I believe to be correct.  Last week I took it to my mechanic to be checked out.  He gave it a clean bill of health.  Then I took it on a 250 mile shake down run.  Absolutely no issues.  The Pirelli Angel sport touring tires have less than 500 miles on them.  The Ferracci carbon mufflers sound awesome. The only known issue is the trip odometer: it turns, but does not engage.  Several extras are included: the original mufflers, a shop manual and a parts manual.

The Le Mans has endurance racing in its genes, but the company has moved on to a line of roadsters, muscle bikes, even an adventurer – so for the moment the V11 is the last Guzzi to refer to Le Mans.  Better suited to an afternoon ride on some scenic byways, the V11 Le Mans did review as quick when under the guidance of a skilled rider.  This one looks to have been carefully ridden and tended to, and has several watchers mulling over the reasonable buy-it-now.

Little Italian: 1986 Moto Morini 350 K2

While not exactly the fire breathing homologation dragons usually befitting the pages of RSBFS, there is something unique and irresistible about the Moto Morini brand. And while the company produced a number of models over the years, it is the little 350cc v-twin that we see the most. These are beautiful bikes that lack the total exclusivity of a Bimota, lack the displacement of a Moto Guzzi, lack the high speed touring prowess of a Laverda, and lack the race track creds of a Ducati. Yet they have a place in the collector world, and are suitably rare in the United States.

The Morini 350 (previously known as the 3 1/2) is a very approachable motorcycle – both from a rider as well as a collector perspective. With both electric and backup kick start available, the 72 degree, overhead valve twin certainly won’t hurt you. The vee angle produces some buzz at certain RPM, but otherwise these bikes are smooth and gentle. And while that Ducati or MV Agusta looks like it wants to spit you off while still on the stand, the Moto Morini chugs away delightfully, while oozing out an estimated 35-ish HP. Wrapped in a style that can only be evoked by the Italians, the 350 is a bike to ride. The collector aspect of the little Morini that could is just as clear: with few examples imported into the United States these are rare yet not terribly expensive. They are not overly complicated to work on, and represent a good entry point into the rare and wonderful.

1986 Moto Morini 350 K2 v-twin. Heron heads. Very original. Rebuilt DellOrto carbs w/ OEM carb kits and sonically cleaned. Replaced CAM belt less than 100 miles ago. Adjusted valves. Replaced electrical starter clutch with OEM part from Europe. Replaced solenoid fuel tap w/ manual fuel tap as I prefer manual petcocks – but still wired for solenoid (just uncover labeled wire cap if you so desire).

Replaced original air cleaner with tasteful cone filters from European supplier that make adjustments/inspections easier and frankly look better too. Original air cleaner goes with the bike if you want to go back to original. Small crack in left front mud guard where it attaches to fork . Glued fiberglass and holds nicely. Not really stressed and non issue. You could sand and paint but left it as functional. I also replaced original tires with new Avon Road Riders w/ tubes (less than 200 miles on them) that are superb for cornering/riding. Telepathic steering is how I describe the K2 – with butter soft gear changes up and down 5 gears. Electric start or kick – both work nicely and starts easily.

I acquired this Moto Morini K2 from original owner in New York who bought it from US distributor Herdan. He chose to pick up at factory in Italy and rode it around Europe with Herdan group before Herdan imported it o US. During the Morini tour of a life time – he met his wife to be in France. Bike shows original mileage which now is 13714 miles – which is very low for Morini’s. They are just broken in at this point. I have only put on additional 200 miles or less during garaged and cosseted ownership.

If you know Morinis you might know this is the final iteration of the 350. Supurb balance and handling. A tasteful modern design with comfortable riding position and adjustable handle bars. Nice integrated fairing circa 1980s’s and originally supplied Italian rear rack I have never seen before. It is of light alloy and solidly constructed. Very cool.

Two sets of original keys. Manuals. Original tool kit. K2’s are rare. Probably most original K2 in U.S. Ride it. Enjoy it. Solid bike and feels much like my Moto Guzzi 850 LMIII but light and nimble.

The K2 is the final series of the model line, and as such is the most polished and evolved. This particular example looks to have been well cared for, and even has a cute story to tell (read the seller’s text). True, this is no homologation model, no two stroke, and probably left of center for what the core RSBFS audience mainlines, but RSBFS is all about the rare the the different and this one definitely fits in there somewhere. Operational – 2001 Honda RVT1000R / RC51

Honda studied the V-twin superbike rulebook carefully, and took the RC51 right to the podium.  Today’s example has seen under 1,000 miles per year, and looks excellent.

The chassis department took quite a bit of the workload on the RC51, creating a massive-looking twin spar alloy affair, which used the V-twin as a stiffener and worked ram-air ports around the steering head.  The engine designers penned a 90-degree vee slightly more oversquare than the competition, and claimed thirteen more hp at 136.  PGM_FI electronics controlled two injectors per cylinder, and cams were gear driven.  Showa brought their best adjustable suspension to the program, and a steering damper was not required.  With classic dual exhausts cruising by the heavily braced swingarm, running gear was rounded out by Nissin brakes and 17-inch wheels.  The full fairing had the latest cat’s eye headlights and side radiators to reduce frontal area.

This Texan RC51 has some nice mods – conformal turn signals, well done frame sliders, Sargent seat, and an interesting 2-1-2 exhaust.  And the compulsory rear fender elimination.  Super clean with just short of 19,000 miles, decent tires and seemingly no paintwork.  Comments from the eBay auction:

A surviving example of the Honda’s racing heritage in the Superbike World Championship. It’s an absolute blast to ride with its V-Twin liquid cooled motor. While this bike has been enjoyed it is still in great shape and will remain a collectable item seen by many for years to come. This bike does have a few after market accessories. It has the under tail with led brake lights with integrated turn signals and a license plate light to pass your state’s inspection. While maintaining the factory look, a set of frame sliders were installed. The factory exhaust was replaced with a set of high rise exhaust on one side that was developed by Honda’s racing team. Bike has been recently detailed and is fully operational and ready to be enjoyed.

The red and even redder bikes traded championships until Honda, as they regularly do in competition situations, decided they’d proved their point and pooled their resources for the next conquest.  The RC51 stayed in production until 1996 and is quietly making its way toward legend.  Several bidders are interested in this one, though the reserve might be double the current bid.  Looking forward  to the last half hour !

CA Interloper: 1991 Yamaha TZR250

In the wilds of Northern California lurks a menacing, gray market two stroke. Titled in Vermont, wearing some interesting new bodywork that appears to be the basis for the black/red Lucky Strike livery and looking as if it has enjoyed the trip to get to this place in its life, the bike shows some mods and some wear – both to be expected given the time since new. The TZR250 has gone through a wide range of engine configurations during the model run, initially released in 1986 as a rather conventional parallel twin. The parallel twin arrangement was retained for the next evolution, however the cylinders were reversed to allow for better packaging for racing. It was not until 1991 that Yamaha created the 90 degree v-twin seen here.

This is the best of the TZR’s, the 3XV. The V twin model for the narrowest possible motor and weight distribution, it is basically a race bike for the street. It starts after a few kicks cold, a couple when warm and runs great when in the rpm’s just like any two stroke. New body kit looks great (what looks like scratches/blemishes is the reflection of a car parked next to it).

Things to note: Body kit is new. Battery is new. Temperature gauge does not work. Has LED headlight and heated grips. Gas tank has a dent on the top, it looks like a bar of some sort fell on it. You will not want to stop riding it. This is what the RZ350 should have been.

The TZR250 came not only in a variety of engine configurations, but also a variety of sporting configurations – R, RS,RSR,SP, and SPR are all part of the alphabet soup that denoted states of power and components. It is unclear exactly what we are looking at here, and without a VIN listed there is no lookup possible. The seller notes heated handgrips (wasn’t familiar with that as an option), and that the temp gauge is inop; the latter is pretty important to the care and feeding of a high-strung two stroke. That being said, this is indeed a rare smoker in the United States, much less the restrictive State of California. Prospective buyers should note that while the bike is in CA, it is not CA plated, meaning there may be difficulty if attempting to register it in the Golden State. Smartly Dressed: 2006 Ducati Sport Classic 1000 Paul Smart

Ducati started the new century on a roll. The internet sensation that was the MH900e parlayed very well into the new line of Sport Classic models. And like the MHe, which was a nod to the earlier Mike Hailwood replicas of the 1980s, the Paul Smart edition was a definitive bow to the green framed 750SS that won in Imola way back in the early 1970s. Stylistically the Sport Classic 1000 Paul Smart was a success, but that was dwarfed by the collector interest in the new Limited Edition models. Today the Paul Smart Sport Classic remains highly collectable, and is likely to be more of a show piece than a hard core rider.

Based around the Sport Classic engine, the air cooled, dual spark desmo unit is good for about 91 HP – if you want to wring it out that much. Max torque comes at a lower RPM – around 6,000 revs – which is really what this engine is all about; riding the torque curve from one corner to the next. The chassis is about as solid as any of the trellis designs that have come out of Bologna, and the top-shelf Ohlins suspension front and rear ensure road-tire compliance. The brakes are naturally Brembo units with large, 320 mm disks up front. The rider position is perfectly suited to aggressive canyon riding – which is perhaps where these limited edition examples come up short. The reach to the bars is very long, making the Paul Smart a great looking torture rack. Between the collector status and the lack of civilian comfort, it’s no wonder that most of these bike have few miles on them.

This bike has a few interesting add-ons, which is a common trait for the model. Somehow a limited edition, special livery motorcycle is not unique enough without a few mods. The Termi exhaust is a standard (and welcome) add, and the ECU is somewhat required to wake up the performance and aid in fueling with the new pipes. The rest of the items are a bit of lipstick and eyeshadow, to be honest, although I’m not one to judge a rider’s preference. Thankfully the seller has included the stock items as part of the sale, which is a bonus.

At only 5,988 miles this super clean 2006 Ducati Sport Classic 10000 Paul Smart is looking for a new home. Prices have varied wildly on asks related to this model, and this one has a Buy It Now price of $25,000. Looking at recent RSBFS postings, there has been a lower miles example listed for a higher-priced $30k, but failed to sell. Yes, these are collector motorcycles and buyers are interested – however the market does not appear to be 30 grand hot. Is $25k more of the magic number?
