Inflation: 1985 Yamaha RZ350

The collector world is on a tear. After years of pandemic caution, the floodgates are open and trading has resumed with gusto. With that activity comes excitement, renewed interest in classic models, and the commensurate rise in pricing. Yes, values are going up; and that is not just conjecture. As Blair, Tootie, Jo and Natalie will tell you, it’s the facts of life. At the sharp end of the market shift is the RZ350. Always popular with readers and riders, the RZ350 highlights the post-pandemic collecting frenzy with $20k + auction results as proof. As a result, we are seeing more and more RZs on the market, with all sellers looking to ride the pricing wave.

Rather than regurgitate the same details and specs of the RZ, let’s highlight some model differences and what makes a collector bike a collector bike. We have seen a TON of lesser quality examples in the past, and even these are enjoying a pricing boost. But the $20k and above examples need to be clean, low mileage and *original* specimens. With the RZ350, the opening performance surgery to be done was to drop the heavy and restrictive catalytic converter mufflers and replace them with a lightweight set of performance expansion chambers. This required some upstream changes in the form of air filter and jetting. Often the oil pump was disengaged or completely removed, reducing parasitic mechanical drag and forcing the bike to run on pre-mix. Heads could be milled for greater compression, ports could be massaged, bores could be increased. All of this boosts HP, and all have a serious impact on long-term values for collectors.

This is my 1985 Yamaha RZ 350 that is unrestored and original right down to its Yokohama tires that it rolled out of the showroom on! Seriously a quality Museum motorcycle, It has 2694 miles on it and has not been ridden since 1987! Original unused tool kit in tail section, I have the two original keys one on a Kenny Roberts key fob from Modesto, CA. It also has a Kenny Roberts license plate frame! This RZ was purchased at Kenny Roberts Yamaha in Modesto, Ca.! I have the original manuals and a Brochure.. I have a clean California title in my name, It has been non-popped since 1990… Very Collectable and definitely a quality addition to someones Man cave….

Perhaps the most rare of the RZs are the California models. CA requires additional evaporative canisters and fuel tank plumbing to minimize the environmental impacts of any internal combustion petrol engine. (Say what you want about the complexity and power-robbing functionality – but Los Angeles air is noticeably cleaner since the California Air Resource Board mandates). The CA-required pieces are often the first to cast off the bike. That raises the stakes for a CA bike that claims to be 100% original. And THAT is what makes today’s bike so interesting. A very clean 1985 model, this CA bike looks to be complete as if from the showroom, including all CA emissions equipment and stock exhaust. And with just 2,694 miles on the clock, the seller claims the tires are original as well!

A great looking, original condition California bike, I expect this particular example to pique the interest of those looking for this model in preserved condition. The seller notes that this bike has been sitting since 1987, which is echoed by the overall condition. The obvious caveat for those who want to ride the rails off of this thing is that it may require some re-commissioning in the form of a leak-down test (for crank seal condition) and tires as a starter. But that is minor work that would surely be worthwhile for an RZ in this stunning condition. Pricing is directly in line with condition, along with the 2022 premium based on past auctions and high aspirations. If the near $30k Buy It Now ask seems too high, the seller is open to offers. 10 mile original bike still on mso. This is a one of a kind bike. The only bike better would still be in the crate. This bike has been sitting inside a house for over 35 years.

Alright, people. Here’s your chance to buy a brand new, 10 original mile, 1985 1/2 RZ-350, California model.

Bike has never been registered, still on the MSO from Yamaha. It comes with the original toolkit and owner’s manual, neither of which have ever been opened. The original pre-delivery checklist comes with the warranty card still attached. Brand new brochure is also included.

This bike is completely stock, not a dent or a scratch in it. The bike is dusty from sitting, but I don’t think you could find a knick or a scratch on it. It has never been dropped and it has been inside a climate-controlled environment for over 35 years. It’s like the bike just left the factory.

No modifications of any kind have been done on this bike. All nuts, bolts, and paintwork look new. No oxidation anywhere. Chain still has a little cosmoline on it. Tires are free of cracks and wear. They still have nubs. Tires are even filled with the original Japanese air. Brakes are not frozen.

This RZ-350 would be perfect for any museum. I cannot stress enough the amazing condition this bike is in. The only way you could find a cleaner one, is if you found one still in the crate.

Back in Black… and Yellow: 1984 Yamaha RZ350

Since the world appears to be going crazy with collector prices on RZ350s these days, let’s take a look at another candidate to see what is available in the market right now. The emphasis being what is in the market right now, as in what the current market will bear. And that is the maddening world of collector bikes; it makes no difference that you couldn’t give away an RZ 10 or 15 years ago, or that you could scoop up a top condition bike for under $5k. Today the market on RZ350s is pretty strong, and sellers are expecting more of the same. Thus, for your perusal, a very clean and relatively low mileage example of a 1984 RZ350, mostly unmolested save for some aftermarket Allspeed chambers (which surprisingly appear similar to the stock cans in silhouette).

For sale from my collection is one of my most prize possessions… a 1984 Kenny Roberts Edition RZ350L with 6,134 miles! Downsizing is my motivation and if this doesn’t sell, it won’t break my heart… I know I can’t replace it as these low mile bikes are gobbled up by collectors as one of their most prize possessions.

I purchased this bike out of state in Nov.2005. Even then, low mileage bikes were hard to find. The seller said it was stored and not ridden for almost 15 years and that it was then “refreshed” at a Yamaha Dealership with the request to make it “Run Like New” (as listed on the service order). The service bill was over $1,100 and included coolant system service, carbs, brakes, fluids and complete factory adjustments and lubrication. Some of the parts included 2 new Bridgestone Battlax BT45 tires, brake parts and pads for re-build, Air Filter, Spark Plugs, Carb parts, cables and oil.

Since purchase, I barely rode the bike but it rode and ran fantastic. Incredible power, handling, braking and simply crisp. Pipe is not super loud and sounds really nice. That was a very busy time for me and it wasn’t long after that I removed the tank and prepped it for storage in my climate controlled garage along with my other bikes. I have not started or rode it in years so it will need to be gone through again should the buyer decide to ride it.

The bike is completely stock with exception of the Vintage Allspeed expansion chambers, New Bridgestone tires (at the time I purchased) and brake pads.

I hope the photos speak for themselves but I think the bike is in Excellent / Very good condition for a bike of this age. There are a couple of blemishes on the tank you can see in the photos but no major dents. The blemishes are just scratches and the previous owner used touch-up paint to repair. I believe you can take this to a professional and greatly improve the appearance. The one close-up photo is the worst spot with a small nick and is ever so slightly dented about 1/16” deep not quite the size of a dime. Underside of the tank is super nice & inside of the tank is also really nice. Just flash surface rust but it has been sealed and stored empty all these years. Overall paint on the Bike is also very nice with only minor imperfections you can see in the photos. Chin spoiler has no cracks and also really nice. I included a close-up of the front fork seal areas which look like new… no nicks or corrosion and I did not notice the seals leaking any fork oil. Brakes still seem to work fine and did not stick while I moved the bike but the fluid should be replaced again. Pipes still have the original paint and there is a shallow dent in the lower part of the pipe near the foot peg you can see in the photo (pic #9).

I’ve tried to show as many photos as possible even with the tank & seat removed and underside. The seat by the way is in mint condition, soft and absolutely no cracks or tears. Chrome on the rear grab bar is smooth & great.

The bike comes with the original owner’s manual, original key and a copy of the service order the previous owner gave me. It still has the original Tool Kit. No battery as it was removed for storage and gave up the ghost long ago.

If the winning bidder is interested, I have an original vintage set of Toomey Pipes in near mint condition and a very nice Black / Yellow Corbin “Gunfighter ” Seat I will offer for purchase after the sale. I prefer to keep them both but will offer only if the Winning Bidder is interested.

The pictures show a very clean example of the RZ; used for 6,000 miles and change, but certainly does not appear abused. Corrosion and weathering is minimal, and while there is the noted mar on the tank, the rest of the bike looks to be much like it came from the showroom. This No Reserve auction has a starting price of $12,500 – which is actually pretty reasonable given the condition and market craziness. The last RZ we posted (here) has been bid up to just under $12k at time of writing, with a BIN of $18,500. This bike starts at $12,500 with no reserve, and $15k is very likely given recent pricing trends. You don’t have to love the bull market if you are a buyer, but what do you think of the bike? The Year That Was: 1985 Yamaha RZ 350

Really a bike that needs no introduction, the Yamaha RZ350 had a brief couple of year fling in the States until the EPA shut them down for good. Today’s clean looking 1985 model has been mistakenly listed as a 1984 – however unless you lived in California, the differences between the years were minor and largely cosmetic (for CA residents the years available were cut short as well). Let’s take a deeper dive!

When released in 1983, US riders were once again able to unleash the ring-a-ding, popcorn sounds of the ubiquitous Yamaha parallel twin. In stock form the RZ was decently potent, although it struggled to match the pace of the 550cc middleweights of the same era. Part of the struggle was due to the concessions made to noise and emissions. Most bikes were quickly modified by adding proper expansion chambers (adding performance and shedding serious weight). Once jetting was dialed for the upgraded pipes (usually accompanied by replacing the restrictive airbox with pods), the buzzy 350 was transformed into a hive of angry bees that could run ring-a-dings with four stroke stockers.

When you consider the condition of this particular bike (including the near stock appearance), it is hard to fathom that it has nearly 22,000 miles on the odometer. Clearly someone cared about this little smoker. The seller notes an engine rebuild – which is an excellent idea for a 37 year old two stroke, and much less involved than a similar task on a four stroker. No details on exactly what was done, but one would imaging rings and seals for starters, and assuming that a refresh was all that was needed.

Like everything else in our modern life, the price for a decent RZ350 is getting more and more expensive. This particular example shows very well, and has been bid up over $9k very quickly. That is only half way to the Buy It Now number of $18,500, and there is a reserve still in place. Given the way this bike looks, it might just get there before this auction is over. Older Display Model: 1979 Yamaha RD400 Daytona Special

To start this post off on the right foot, let’s make it clear: if you win this auction and do nothing, you will have won a static display. Seller claims this 1979 model of the last of the RDs is mint – and cosmetically it does appear to be so. But after sitting quietly since 1986 (for the math challenged that is 36 years of inactivity), some mechanical effort may be required to wake the beast within. Is that worth it? Well, yeah, it is. After all, this is a freaking Daytona Special, and Special is more than just a name.

The final year of the RD400 series, the Daytona Special – or “F” model in Yamaha nomenclature – was already a throwback in a new world order of four strokes. Still, the venerable parallel twin had some tricks and some teeth. Updates with disk brakes (single disk front and rear) and industry leading cast wheels, the 365 pound (dry) RD was pushed along by 44 angry bee horse powers. Active riders were rewarded when keeping the tach above 5,500 RPM and on the boil, where the RD exhibits some of its race-bred DNA. Autolube oil injection keeps the two stroke happy while eliminating the gas station shenanigans of oil bottle guesswork. All told, this was the most up to date, refined and “last gasp” serious road-going two stroke available in America before the brief-lived RZ350.

The RD400 has been inside our dealership on display since August 1986. It is in mint condition for a 43 year old motorcycle. It does not currently run/operate. It has a clear Texas title.

Well, not really that much info available. It is not clear if the seller has tried to get the bike running and given up, or if this is more of a push-it-out-the-door-as-is affair. Thankfully smokers are not that complicated, although I would firstly be concerned with whether the motor turns over (i.e. pistons/rings not seized in the barrels), followed by fuel system. If all that passes muster, the thing should run. From there a leak down test to check the crank seals is in order; no use getting it running just to have it run lean and seize up at an inopportune moment. And finally, be sure and budget in a new set of sticky rubber to take advantage of what comes next. Is that worth the effort? The Daytona Special is a pretty special bike, both mechanically as well as historically. To find one in such showroom condition with only 3,000 miles on the clock is rare indeed. 1993 Yamaha SRX400 For Sale on eBay!

In 1993, an almost liter bike sized machine with a funny sized front tire was all the rave and blah, blah, blah #BeenThereDoneThat
While Baba was doing his thing, Yamaha was off to the side tinkering on their own niche machine- the SRX 400 Thumper!

I normally frown upon rare machines with a complete overhaul and modern updates, but I also realize I’m almost as old as dirt and my favorite 90’s machines are starting to require some freshening up.
I’m not a fan of the muscle car term they use for such overhauls and I literally hate to say it, but in this case it fits . . . I can’t even type it.

Whew! The seller didn’t use the muscle car term, but they did mention a beautiful high end titanium exhaust! Let’s have a look- shall we?

That my friends is a dime piece! Lets look at that again-

The SRX was already a welter weight at 374#’s and we all know the 5# stock exhaust is best used as a boat anchor. So that sweet ass Ti exhaust drops it down to 370’ish#’s and definitely adds a few ponies. Now, it’s a given that SRX ponies are almost as hard to find as frogs hair, but rest assured, they are there. How many you ask? Let’s be generous and call it 35’ish with the Ti exhaust and one cylinder.

The Olhins is a nice touch and I’m sure the stock unit was worn out and FUBAR.

Angrier Bees: 1984 Yamaha RZ 350

The Yamaha RZ350 is just one of those bikes. It wasn’t particularly rare or super fast in the day (in stock form it struggled to compete with the 550s of the day). It wasn’t even super irresponsible for a two stroke, harboring lean burn technology, oil injection, an exhaust power valve to broaden the torque curve, air injection and – of course – the all important catalytic converters nestled in the exhaust pipes. This was the last street-going two stroke sport bike officially imported into all 50 of these United States, making it a milestone machine. The years have been very kind to the legend that is the RZ, and with excellent examples in short supply the values are reflected appropriately.

Known as the RD350LC in other markets, the RZ350 was pretty standard Yamaha two stroke fare; a liquid cooled parallel twin with reed valve induction and dual carbs. The YPVS allowed the exhaust port to raise and lower depending upon revs, boosting power in the lower end of the RPM range, where two strokes typically suffer the most. A single shock rear suspension, triple disk brakes and minimalist bodywork (including the cafe fairing) completed the tidy package. These were neat and unique when new, showed up in droves at local racetracks, and experienced a “dime a dozen” type of mentality with riders and collectors. They were used, abused, and used some more. Today, they are still relatively plentiful in hacked up condition. But finding a good one – a clean, well-loved example – is getting harder and harder to do. And prices are reflecting the rarity.

Up for auction is my beautiful 1984 Yamaha RZ 350 with matching frame and engine case serial numbers. The bike has 15,692 miles.

This bike has an interesting history. It was owned by Bobby J from Bobby J’s Yamaha in Albuquerque, NM. It is the oldest Yamaha dealer in the US. If you go on youtube, there are videos about Bobby J’s Yamaha and Bobby J himself.

I purchased it from one of his retired salesmen in around 2010. I kept it for a couple of months and then sold it to a friend of mine who I told that if you ever need to sell it then call me. A few years later he did so I purchased the bike back in 2013.

In the time that he owned it, the engine was rebuilt by Jason Perdue, the owner of SMR, in Santa Fe, NM. Jason has built many RZ 350s and Banshees. The engine has about 1200 miles since it was rebuilt. I don’t ride the bike very often, and I am working on selling a few bikes out of my collection as I have too many.

The bike was tuned for sea level by Chuck “Supertune” Quenzler of Team Scream Racing in Clearwater Florida. He was impressed with the bike to say the least.

The bike has a 370 big bore kit. It has been ported by Jason at SMR, has V-Force reeds, stock carbs with a K&N filter, Toomey pipes, ATK fork brace, rebuilt front end with Progressive springs, rear Works remote reservoir shock, and good Avon roadrider tires. I believe that the radiator shroud is either Canadian or European since it does not have any holes for reflectors. I got it off of ebay because I liked the way it looked better than the stocker.

It also includes the tool kit. I do not have the owner’s manual. I do have some stock pipes and the stock air box that will go with the bike.

The bike has always been garaged and well taken care of. The body is beautiful shape with no repairs. It has original paint with no dents or dings. No corrosion. No cracks in the plastic. The paint is beautiful as the photos show. Windscreen is original with the sticker still on it. Chin fairing is beautiful.

This is a beautiful RZ for your collection or your Sunday rider. No disappointments here.

The bike is ready to go. It has a clear Florida title in my name.

This bike looks to be in great condition. Collectors may chagrin the mods, but the RZ responds to all the great wake up sauce as any other smoker. That means an overbore (or big bore kit), raising the compression ratio, porting, expansion chambers, etc. It looks like this beauty has had a few of those mods done to it, stoking the hive full of even angrier bees; it looks and sounds like it is ready to to poke the four stroke bear. While many a bike has been stripped of lights, bodywork and other non-essentials to produce a track-day steed, converting a street bike to a race-legal mount as blessed by a legitimate sanctioning body is a bit more difficult. Track days allow you to tape up lights rather than remove them. Track days are generally OK with a stock cooling arrangement (i.e. coolant). Ditto for stock fasteners and bodywork. Race organizations key into safety-related items that can not only be detrimental to the bike in question, but can go further into placing other competitors at risk. That means complete removal of all lights, as well as straight water in the radiator (most allow for additives such as Water Wetter, or similar). Both could cause follow on riders problems. So, too, is the requirement for a belly pan that can capture out that might leak out of the sump. All critical fasteners must be safety wired, including the oil drain plug and brake caliper fasteners. This all takes parts, work, and some know how to successfully implement.

Today’s example starts with the magnificent FZ750 Genesis platform, which enjoyed a heyday on track back in the 1980s and early 1990s. It has been made ready for the track via the aforementioned mods, and the suspension has been upgraded with bits based on technology closer to the current century. The motor remains (what appears to be) fairly stock, which is great for track day longevity, meaning that you can enjoy all there is of the 5-valve motor without worry about it been too high strung or ready to come apart on the next blip of the throttle.

Pricing for race bikes has always been difficult. Certainly this is not a current-level Moto2 machine, but it is welcome in WERA and AHRMA events. Alternatively, this could be a purpose-built bike for track days and schools; it is focused on the track mission, and you don’t have to mess with your street bike and worry about potential damage. This bike looks to be in great condition, and by all counts appears to be set up for serious fun. But few things depreciate like last year’s race bike, and although the vintage series helps hold up the bottom of the market, this is still a bike from the 1980s. The seller is asking $3,700 as an opening bid, and I doubt you could convert a stock 1985 FZ750 to track ready condition like this for that amount.
