RSBFS
40 years ago this bike rolled off the production line. It doesn’t seem like that long ago until I see photos of mullets and big hair. Yet a well kept bike from that era seems more like a work of art than a trend, especially when you know the history and evolution.
Back in 2010 Mike found an ’85 FZ750 for RSBFS and gave us a bit of perspective, “The 1980s were a wild time of experimentation for the Big Four. From different engine configurations to Turbos to suspension and wheel sizes, all of the Japanese manufacturers raced to leapfrog the other in terms of technology and performance. These were heady times for the sportbike world, as we moved from air cooled motors to liquid cooled, two valves per cylinder to four, and twin-shock swingarms to single-shock configurations.
Yamaha’s salvo for 1985 was the FZ750. Powered by a revolutionary “Genesis” motor, the FZ featured 5 valves per cylinder (3 intake, 2 exhaust), an alternator stacked above the transmission to narrow the profile, and cylinders laid down at a major angle to aid in weight distribution and provide a straighter shot from the 36 mm Mikuni carbs into the cylinder head. In period fashion, a GP-inspired 16-inch front wheel was fitted, which quickened the steering over larger hoops of the day.”
For sure we have readers that love this bike. We wish there were more photos, but you’ll have to facetime or stop by to get a better look.
Good luck to the buyer and seller!
I was always a fan of the ’85-86 FZ750’s. The ’86 GSXR overshadowed these FZ’s but I thought the FZ was much more comfortable to ride for any distance. Plus, it was a technical “tour de force” for its day with the liquid cooled, five valve, 45 degree cylinder, down-draft carbs genesis engine, perimeter frame, 16″ front wheel, and weight centralization gas tank. I still have this bike w/ 40K miles. I like the red wheels on this bike but it looks like the mufflers are no longer black chromed. These 1st generation FZ’s, that are pretty stock, don’t show up for sale very often anymore.
As stated, these are getting pretty scarce in half decent condition. I had one BITD and wish I still did, these had some revolutionary tech.
Oh yeah, A plus for me was the FZ has a center-stand, the GSXR doesn’t.
Always wanted one of these. Too bad it’s 3000 miles away. Guess I’ll have to be happy with my ’87 FZ700…. for now.
