Tricolore: 2008 Ducati Monster S4RS

The 2008 Ducati Monster S4RS was Bologna’s first in earnest attempt at a truly ludicrous hooligan machine, and an early salvo in what is now a full-blown war to build the scariest supernaked. These days, it’s not rare to see 150-odd horsepower stuffed into a trellis frame with upright bars, but back in ’08, the 120-horsepower S4RS pretty much stopped everyone in their tracks.

Here was a bike with the suspension and horsepower just shy of a club racer and a riding position closer to a Triumph Bonneville than a 1098. Oh, and a healthy enthusiasm for pointing the front wheel at the heavens. The Ohlins suspension, gorgeous trellis frame and the love-it-or-hate-it Italian flag paint left absolutely nothing to the imagination about this thing’s intentions.

This 2008 Ducati Monster S4RS Tricolore is one of 400 in this paint scheme, and is claimed to be exactly as it left the factory. It has seen just 7,000 miles, and appears to be pretty much spotless. That’s not small feat, given that the Monster is all nooks and crannies where dirt can gather covered by the barest minimum of bodywork.

The 1997 Moto Guzzi Sport 1100i has been a bike for people who value quirks and personality over outright speed since its debut. With the marque’s classic longitudinally mounted long-stroke, pushrod v-twin it’s known for a smooth, torquey delivery rather than screaming speed. But what you don’t get in lap times is made up for by the fact that the big Goose is solid, reliable, unique and timeless. And there are plenty of tasty pieces hung off the pretty trellis frame.

Despite a mill that made little sporting pretense, the bike wears WP forks and a WP shock, which guide a pair of lovely Marchesini wheels down the road. Thanks to that, and despite ground clearance hampered by the heads heading east and west, the bikes handle remarkably well.

And all that is before you get to how pretty the bike is, in this case in Guzzi’s beautiful hue of yellow. This one has seen just shy of 7,000 miles, and less than 3,000 since its current owner took it to Ontario eight years ago.

By its condition, it is clear this bike has spent its entire life being babied, and as such, it is more than ready for a new owner to enjoy. From the seller:

This beautiful 1997 Moto Guzzi was listed on RSBFS in March of 2011, and was purchased by the current owner after seeing it on this website. Here is a link to the original posting here on RSBFS in 2011 – The bike was shipped to the border at Buffalo, New York, and was legally imported into Ontario at that time. The owner has Ontario ownership (title) in hand. At the time of the current owner’s purchase the bike had only 3982 miles on the odometer. As you can see in the photos the bike has seen less than 2500 miles since moving north of the border.

Since moving to Ontario the bike has been kept indoors in a heated garage, except for its occasional use on sunny days. All plastic and bright bits are in excellent condition. It has a
new battery and starts and runs as intended. As you can see from the 2011 posting the rear sets and the levers are custom items, but the original controls and footrests were not included
in the original sale, so they are not available with this sale. The original owner’s manual comes with the bike.

Thanks in part to its definite quirks and the fact that just being good at everything doesn’t make you stand out, these lovely bikes don’t command the premium that some of slightly less refined Japanese bikes do. But that, dear reader, is part of what makes this thing so desirable. The cost of entry means you don’t need to be a budding tech oligarch to park one in your two-car.

We showcase a lot of two strokes, and we wax poetic about their knife-edge handling and peaky, unforgiving powerbands. Most of the time, we’re showing off nice but rider-quality machines that will make the new owners very happy on the track or in the canyons. Not today. Today we have a time capsule 2004 Aprilia RS250 that the seller couldn’t bring himself to tear up on the track. It’s so nice that he went to the length of sourcing another RS250 rather than ride this one in anger.

Instead, it sat, unmolested and unblemished in his basement on display. As such, it is as close as you’re going to get to perfect, and is original down to the scrub in on its first set of tires. It comes with all the factory documents and stickers and shows less than 400 miles on the odometer. Having been sold in or around New Hampshire originally, there’s little chance it’s ever going to see an American road. That’s all well and good, as it’s almost too cherry to tear up now.

The RS250s were powered by a version of the Suzuki RGV250 v-twin that Aprilia tweaked heavily for their purposes. With a lighter and more focused chassis and suspension than the RGV, the Italian became the mount of choice for up-and-coming racers including Loris Capirossi, Max Biaggi, Jorge Lorenzo, Marco Melandri and Alvaro Bautista, all of whom went on to MotoGP fame. For a hammer-simple 70 horsepower two-stroke, that ain’t a bad CV.

If you are looking for a perfect, as new RS 250 for your collection, look no further this is your bike. Here’s the back story, I was looking for an RS 250 as a track bike ten years ago. I found this one and was amazed how nice it was. I purchased it then once it was home, concluded it was too nice to track as it needed to be preserved. So I bought another RS 250 for this purpose which I still have. As such this one has been in my climate controlled finished basement on a lighted display table ever since to be looked at and admired. This one is a time capsule that has less than 400 miles original miles on it, 100% stock including tires, no modifications and all of the idiot stickers that came on it. I’m a collector so selling this to fund a new addition to the herd. I know that peoples definition of condition varies greatly much to my chagrin in looking at other bikes, because of this I tend to understate the condition of things. I would rate this close to a 10 out of ten, no blemishes, never dropped, like new, perfect paint, just a pleasure to look at. As it was in my basement the paint is in great condition with no oxidation or sun damage. I just pulled it out to get it ready for sale, added a new battery and it’s on its way this week to Seacoast Aprilia – Ducati, which was the original dealer that sold it to change out the fluids and go through it to make sure there are no issues. It will be in perfect running condition for the lucky buyer with the original MSO. If you are serious I am sure I can arrange for you to speak with someone as Seacoast to get an unbiased second opinion. Like all two strokes RS 250’s are getting harder to come by, finding one in this condition is very rare as most have been flogged on the track and modified. As either a display bike or a track day toy, you can’t say fairer than this little RS250.

Featured Listing: 2004 Ducati 998 Matrix Edition

If you feel like snagging a patent-leather set of, um, leathers and flying around the Oakland freeways like Trinity did in The Matrix Reloaded, may we present your ride. The bike from the original Hollywood scene was a 2001 Ducati 996, but by the time the movie came out, Ducati’s 998 had reached dealers. So sci fi fans were treated to a 2004 Ducati 998 wearing a beautiful metallic green paintjob and some stickers bearing the title of the movie.

Under the skin, the bike was a standard 998, sporting an Ohlins fully-adjustable rear shock and adjustable Showa forks. The Tetrastretta twin pushed out somewhere around 120 horsepower in the final iteration of the iconic 916 body shape. As Ducati special editions from the mid-aughties go, this one is pretty light on special details, but its lineage is enough to make collectors drool.

Production numbers are hard to pin down. The seller says around 200 were built, while various Internet sources claim between 150 and 200, or just flat out admit they have no idea. Suffice to say, there aren’t a ton of these things kicking around.

Aside from a tear in the seat, as noted in the Craigslist posting, and aftermarket rearsets, this 2004 Ducati 998 Matrix Edition is as it left the dealer. The seller notes that the bike has been displayed for the last few years on slicks and a non-op title. Before it was put to rest, it reportedly ran well, though it was apparently a lemon law buyback.

With 12,000 miles on the dial, we have to guess that whatever issues this bike had from the factory have been handled. And, at $7,000, it’s a semi-affordable way to own a rare Ducati in an iconic body style.

Legendary: 2002 MV Agusta F4 Senna 750

An MV Agusta F4 Senna 750 is enough by itself to justify a modifier like “legendary,” but this one carries around a couple extra big names to back it up. Not only does it bear the name of The Man Himself, the bike wears 10-time GP World Champion Giacomo Agostini’s signature and was first owned by NHL legend Sergei Fedorov.

If you’re not a fan of the Detroit Red Wings, or you don’t remember the early 1990s, Fedorov’s name likely doesn’t mean much to you. But the dude won three Stanley Cups with the ‘Wings, after a gutsy defection to the United States after an international game. Look him up.

Setting aside the signatures and ownership of famous men, the 2002 MV Agusta Senna 750 is a force to be reckoned with. The 750cc inline four was designed with the help of Ferrari, and in the Senna managed about 140 horsepower. They’re serious machines, but there are a raft of cheaper bikes that went faster. The Senna is one you buy, because, well, look at it.

This is number 192 of a worldwide production run of 300, and it looks to be in very good shape, commensurate with its scant 3,500 miles. The pictures don’t tell us much, and the description doesn’t go into huge detail either.

Quarter mile in 10.7 at 136mph. Lightweight and extremely fast. These bikes are legendary not only for performance and handling but for design and collectability!

This bike is in excellent cosmetic, running and riding condition at 3500 miles. The sale includes original owner’s manual, spare key, spark plug tool, and factory red rear wheel bike stand.

This bike is currently for sale locally as well.

With a starting bid of ten grand, and no word on the reserve, we’ll be interested to see where this one will go. Will the whiff of fame and provenance drive the value above similar bikes? Let us know what you think in the comments!

Dirty Duc: 2005 Ducati 999R

What you’re looking at here is certainly not the nicest 2005 Ducati 999R that I have ever seen, but it is still a 2005 Ducati 999R, and that gives it a couple free passes and a trump card or two. Knicked though parts of it may be, it is still every bit the 135-horsepower carbon-clad repliracer that it was 14 years ago. Built to be the barrel-chested alpha male of superbike racing, the 999 series was quick to prove its mettle. It carried off three World Superbike Titles and a British Superbike title between 2004 and 2006, spawning a raft of special editions in the process. The wins also helped make up for its, uh, controversial visage.

The 999R separated itself from the base bike and the 999S with an engine that not only had sexier internals — titanium connecting rods and a knife-edged crankshaft among them — it had a different bore and stroke in sandcast cases. Wear items and big-ticket repairs on this bike will be a real thing when the time comes, but will be worth it.

As I said earlier, this one has some blemishes and its fair share of dirt, but does appear to be a real-deal 2005 Ducati 999R. It looks like it has aftermarket footpegs, and there is a weird rub mark on the stamped VIN. Despite the dirt, the seller says it has only covered 1,324 miles, and it appears to be in ready-to-ride shape.

At $28,000, the price is tied for the highest ask I have seen for one of these with a zero-mile FILA Edition bike from  a few weeks back. Low-mileage non-special-editions have recently been changing hands in the high teens, but there’s always exceptions.

Top Gun: 1991 Ducati 851

I’m not sure you can overstate the importance of the Ducati 851 to the Italian brand’s position at the top of motorcycling’s desirability food chain. Get past the literally and figuratively square headlight — the steel-framed 1983 dad glasses of illumination — and everything else is focused, lithe Italic sin. The 851 took a pokey, dated bottom end, stuck big pistons, four-valve heads and water cooling on and paved the way for the next 20 years of Ducati twins. Bologna shoved the resulting 100-horse mill into a chassis that only just nudged past 460 pounds wet and set about gathering up the 1990 World Superbike Championship.

Though the family resemblance is under the skin, there would be no Ducati 916 if it weren’t for the 851. As you might expect, the Ducati 851 is known for laser-precise handling, and the prodigious and immediate shove that big L-twins are known for. The beast makes its peak horsepower shy of 10,000 rpm, but that doesn’t mean it’s a lazy or ponderous engine. It’s every bit as racy as the chassis and suspension that support it.

The 1991 Ducati 851 you see here appears to be in near-perfect shape, with just a small hole in the seat marring an otherwise flawless preservation. In the grand scheme of things, 1991 wasn’t that long ago, yet the 851 is simple in a way that no modern machine can match. The dashboard is three dials. The body work is a thin carbon fiber skirt around a steel trellis. The paint on the front fender is so thin the weave is threatening to break through. It’s perfect.

The bike has definitely seen some miles, with the clock showing 33,000 racked up in 28 years, but who can fault a guy for riding his Ducati? It does not appear to be too much worse for wear, and at $6,900 buy-it-now, it’s a damn-near no-brainer.

We are lucky at RSBFS to be helping to offer this gorgeous 1993 Moto Guzzi Daytona 1000 after a 15-year stay in a private collection. Though collection dwelling generally means a bike has sat long-term, this Goose shows 32,000 miles on the clock, which means it has been ridden and loved as much as it has been preserved.

The Moto Guzzi Daytona 1000 was not really built to win races itself, but to celebrate Guzzi’s victories in a spate of endurance contests in the 1980s, and to show off the Italian firm’s ability to engineer and execute a jewel of a motorcycle from somewhat unlikely sources. The bike was designed by dentist-turned-privateer racer John Wittner, and was powered by a very tweaked version of Guzzi’s enormous longitudinal high-cam v-twin. Tweaks included bigger jugs and a longer stroke, which helped the mill push out 95 horses.

After his team of modified Moto Guzzis won the 1984 and 1985 U.S. Endurance Championship and the 1987 Pro Twins series, U.S. Moto Guzzi guru Dr. John Wittner was made an offer he couldn’t refuse. Summoned to Italy by Guzzi godfather Alejandro de Tomaso, Wittner, a former dentist turned endurance racer, was asked to help develop a new world-beating superbike. Guzzi revealed a prototype at the 1989 Milan show and named it for the famous Florida circuit (where they won the 250-mile endurance race in 1985), but in typical Italian fashion it took until late 1991 for the Daytona to go into production.
Although the hot rod Daytona engine was based around the classic “big block” air-cooled Moto Guzzi transverse V-twin, in the end it retained only the crankshaft and crankcases of the standard engine. Using the 78mm stroke of the 948cc Le Mans 1000 combined with new plated alloy cylinders with a 90mm bore, it displaced 992cc. A bright red sport fairing melded into the gas tank just above the Daytona’s all-new cylinder heads, grandly marked “OHC 4V” for overhead camshaft 4-valve. In truth, the cams were carried high in the cylinder heads, not on top, so the engine could also be considered a high-cam design overhead valve.
From the crankshaft, a reduction gear train drove a pair of toothed belts, each spinning a single camshaft in each cylinder head, which in turn opened four valves via short pushrods operating rocker shafts. Fueling was by Weber-Marelli electronic injection, and the exhaust system was in stainless steel. The engine drove a revised version of the 5-speed transmission used on most Guzzi twins through a beefed-up clutch (with 10 springs versus eight) and a driveshaft to the rear wheel.

The powertrain hung from a new spine frame based on Dr. John’s race bike design, constructed from 1.5mm chrome-moly tubing with a cantilevered rear swingarm and a fully adjustable Koni (later WP) monoshock under the seat. Marzocchi supplied the “conventional” three-way adjustable fork, and Brembo four-pot calipers with 300mm dual discs (two-pot/260mm rear) provided stopping power. Cast alloy 17-inch wheels ran on 120-section front and 160-section rear tires.

With a claimed 95 horsepower available at 8,000rpm, the Daytona was the most powerful road-going Guzzi to date, returning a top speed of 145mph. “The result is excellent rideability, with big-time low-end and midrange power available whenever you open the throttle,” Cycle World said of the big twin in 1993. On the road, they found that being long and low in Guzzi tradition gave the Daytona reassuring stability at high speeds: “The Daytona proved unflappable, with well-damped suspension, plenty of cornering clearance, premium tires and a relatively flickable yet very stable nature.” You will not see another one anytime soon. Be different and add this thumper to your collection. This investment will only increase over time.

Though the performance is more than enough for mortals, the Daytona 1000’s real claim to fame is its scarcity, build quality and looks. It is a true gentleman’s road racer, made more for comfortable canyon carving than dicing at the sharp end of a club race. The previous owners of this machine clearly took that mandate to heart, given the beast the exercise it deserves.

Despite its mileage, the thing looks absolutely mint, with nary a blemish, nick or streak of grime. The rear cowl wears custom livery, and the wheels have been painted gold to match the accents. That might deter the hardest-core originality freaks, but we love the look.
