Sixteen Candles: 2008 Ducati Desmosedici D16RR

The introduction of the Desmosedici was a typical Ducati bombshell to the world. Over the top in a manner than only a MotoGP bike for the street can be, the D16RR was exotic and wild, beautiful and dangerous, and horribly, horribly expensive. This limited production (1,500 units total, world wide) model saw the introduction of the V-4, with the nickname Desmosedici (sixteen in Italian) and D16RR referring to this new arrangement. The bike was as MotoGP as possible for a Federalized streetbike, and retained some interesting features inherited directly from the racing lineage.

Essentially two L-twin motors placed side-by-side and firing together in a twin pulse manner, the D16RR was really an homage to the GP racer. Power from the 990cc mill was knocking on the 200 HP door, with 197 and change reported. As expected, RPM limits were raised over that of the twins, with max power occurring near the 14k mark. But it is not just about raw power. The Desmosedici remains pretty faithful to the racer with frame geometry, and top level Ohlins suspension and radial mount Brembo braking components (sorry, no carbon-carbon brakes for the street). The comprehensive electronics package even includes a data logger to help you develop as a rider. What isn’t metal on this bike is all carbon fiber. What isn’t carbon fiber is either aluminum (frame, cases, swing arm), magnesium (heads and wheels) or titanium (connecting rods, intake and exhaust valves). The frame is minimal, and hangs the rear suspension off in a stressed-member format. The seat and underlying structure is also cantilevered off of the rear of the engine.

The fly in the ointment with race replicas is that they are NOT simply the race bike with lights. Because racers don’t have the electrical loads required by lights, horn and signals, they can often get away with a minimalist electrical structure that offers just enough juice to power the ECU and fuel injection – or even run total loss with no charging system at all. That doesn’t work on the street, where bikes need electric start, headlights which are on all the time, a working tail light and turn signals. The bigger alternator and battery takes space. The race bikes run dry sump lubrication, but again, that is less useful on the street and requires valuable space that could be utilized for the upgraded cooling system, the upgrade charging system or the emissions controls. And while you cannot simply take a MotoGP bike and call it a street bike, Ducati went through a tremendous effort to produce something like a GP bike. And if you were lucky enough to be close enough to the front of the line to get one, it would only cost you $72k.

If I’m to be honest, it was really the background bikes in the photos that originally caught my attention in this advert. The 916 is classic, and I love the RC45. But the NR750? That is even more over the top. And that just might be the problem with the D16RR. While a phenomenal achievement by a relatively small manufacturer – and certainly very, very exclusive – it somehow lacks the “OMG Wow” impact that such a high dollar amount warrants. These are truly amazing motorcycles in many, many ways, yet they seem to fail to ignite the interest and the curiosity of our readers. Meanwhile, this beautiful 8,000 mile machine (let that sink in – somebody actually rode this beauty a respectable number of miles!) comes with all of the “race only” parts and spares and has a complete service history. The BIN is set for $64k, but the opening ask on the auction portion is a mere $56k with reserve in place. Check it out here. To the average sportbike addict, the 2008 Ducati Desmosedici RR stands alone among race replica bikes as the one that nailed all the details and defined the genre in a taught, carbon fiber-clad package. Honda saddled its RC213-VS with electronic nannies, a restrictive exhaust and a collectors-only asking price. Ducati engaged in no such silliness. They detuned, added lights, and slapped on a pricetag.

What’s more, the Italians asked under $100k for their super-exclusive, experts-only racebike, and readily provided the few things you needed to truly go nuts. Despite their rarity, the bikes have depreciated since then, and nice examples regularly go for the same price as a BMW 3 Series. Most, that is, except this 2008 Ducati Desmosedici RR.

While it is extremely low mileage, comes with all the factory extras, including the more business-minded exhaust system, $90,000 is a big ask, especially considering a brand-new Desmo was $72,500.

As is always the case with exotic machinery, a simple truth-in-advertising name sounds so much better in Italian… Oooooh. A Maserati Quattroporte… That sounds so sexy. Wait, it just means “four doors”? You’re saying that the name of that four-door Maserati is “Maserati four-door”? The same thing is true for Ducati’s GP6-based Desmosedici D16RR road bike: the name literally means “desmodromic sixteen” and refers to the number of valves in the V4 engine’s Desmo heads… maybe not as sexy as naming your motorcycle after a famous race victory, but it has a pragmatic quality that suits a detuned race bike, with the bonus that most folks just think it sounds cool.

Race-replicas clog up eBay every day, but most are just graphics jobs on the fairing of an ordinary roadbike, or homologation specials designed to allow certain bikes or just specific parts to be used in various race classes. But the D16RR is something else entirely, a one-of-a-kind machine that shares almost no parts with any production Ducati, a detuned MotoGP prototype, fitted with lights. Technically, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, as it’s not like the road bike’s engine parts are actually interchangeable with the race bike’s…  And there are plenty of other changes as well. For example, it’s not a dry-sump engine like the race bikes, but it does have gear-driven cams and a “Twin-Pulse” firing order that gave the bike something closer to the Ducati’s signature v-twin growl…

But honestly, the fact that it’s not really a detuned racebike almost makes it more impressive considering the mere 1,500 built, since the design brief for this engine was basically “make a brand new engine that is as much like the race engine as is practical, but shares no parts with it.”  It is an utterly impractical motorcycle, a barely-tamed 989cc V4 monster that cranks out nearly 200hp at the crank, with absolutely top-shelf suspension at the front and rear. A Desmosedici cost over $70,000 new and, although they’re currently trading for much less, you’d better be prepared for very expensive maintenance costs down the line. Does your local shop even stock tires to fit that 16″ rear wheel?

This example has been used a bit, although miles are still extremely low, and it is fitted with one of the accessory Ducati Performance exhausts that were available for the bike and gave it a more authentic style than the stock part, increased noise, and a nice hole in the bellypan.

This is a pre-owned 2008 Ducati Desmosedici. This bike has 4300 miles and has the GP Exhaust installed. Overall condition of the bike is good, it has been ridden so it has some rock chips in the lower fairing, small scratch in the swingarm and a few minor small cosmetic imperfections. Nothing wrong mechanically and nothing bad cosmetically, normal 4300 mile condition, it has never been down. Tires still have some life but the bike will come with a brand new set. This bike comes with: bike stand, cover, 2 keys, owners manual, new set of OEM tires. It does not have the complete owners manual, just the main one. It does not have the plaque, stock or race exhaust. Only the parts that are listed.

Bidding is very active and up north of $35,000.00, a bargain price for a Desmo. The missing bits might put off collectors but, if the price stays low, someone’s getting a good deal. Personally, I’d be happy with the very cool GP exhaust, since the original configuration always seemed weird to me: why does it need to exit out the top of the tail section? Okay, I get it: you want to keep the brake light and signals looking conventional. But wouldn’t it make more sense for a straight shot out the tail, and build some sort of LED bit around it or suspended beneath it, like on the Benelli TnT? Especially since that would look even more racebike-y?

In any event, until the Honda RCV213 came along, this was the closest bike fans could get to a road-legal GP bike and that always seems to get the attention of collectors. They sound hellacious, look like nothing else on the road even ten years on, and offer up repair and maintenance bills that will definitely remind you that you own a thoroughbred exotic…

Despite all the jokes about the state of Florida, you have to admit that there are a lot of amazing sportbikes located in the state.  Its probably some combination of nice weather, lots of expats and people with “discretionary income” but hey, I am not complaining.  Here is a bit of semi-unobtanium located in Florida that will certainly appeal to a collector, a 2008 Ducati Desmosedici listed as having 1 mile since new.

For anyone not familiar with the Desmosedici, it truly was designed to be a road-legal version of the Ducati MotoGP racebike.  In 2002 Ducati returned to top level motorcycle racing after a long absence and over the course of the next few years managed to climb back into serious championship contention.  This success was in large part due to the their D16RR effort; sixteen desmodromic actuated valves  (hence the D16RR designation) and gear driven cams were built into a 989cc V4 that went to a nearly 14,000 rpm redline and produced 200 hp.  All this power was wrapped up in a chrome-moly steel frame, surrounded by ultra-light but strong carbon/plastic blend bodywork.  Oh and there was a 4-2-1 under-seat exhaust in titanium.

After a few years of developing/running the D16RR everything finally came together in the 2007 season when Casey Stoner rode a race prepped D16RR to the championship.  In typical Ducati fashion, a street version was offered the following year but unlike a lot of Ducati “commemorative editions”, these would be true racers that came equipped with both street and racing ECU’s and exhaust sets.   NOTE:  From what I have read there was also less titanium bits in some engine components.

The 2008 Desmosedici was originally planned to only be built as a small production run but demand was so robust that the run expanded and 1,500 Desmosedici’s were made.  Even though they were priced at an eye-popping $72,500 USD and were launched in the very depths of the financial crisis all 1,500 units were pre-sold, with many going to track day enthusiasts.

What would it be like to own/ride such a beastly bike?   Below are links to just some of the reviews of the Desmosedici-

Now for the question on everyone’s mind, is this 1 mile 2008 Ducati Desmosedici worth the $58,000 USD asking price?  Well the going price for a Desmosedici with under 5000 miles seems to be high 40’s with the price increasing towards the lower 50k range as the mileage lessens.  Based on this history, the Buy-It-Now price of $58,000 USD seems kind of high.  Also there is no mention in the auction of items that came with the bike such as the OEM alternate exhaust, ECU or decals.  Lastly, some early models of these bikes have a reputation for needing servicing but since this bike is listed as having 1 mile since new its unlikely these services issues have arisen/been addressed.

My personal opinion is that prices for the Ducati Desmosedici have stabilized and will rise over time.   The seller has indicated they are willing to consider offers so perhaps some negotiation can get a collector into this bike at a bit of a discount.  Personally I think the value price is probably somewhere between $47,500 and $53,000 USD, maybe a bit more given this is the somewhat rarer Rosso version.

We seemed to have passed through the winter doldrums here at RSBFS and bits of unobtanium are starting to appear for sale again. Here are a pair of Ducati Desmosedici/D16RR team versions for sale on ebay, with the first being a relist from this time last year and the second a new listing located in France.

The Desmosedici was offered as a limited production road-legal version of the Ducati MotoGP racebike but unlike a lot of Ducati limited editions, was a lot more than just a re-skinned standard bike.  The Desmo was and remains one of the very few true MotoGp replicas built for the street.  Sixteen desmodromic actuated valves  (hence the D16RR designation) and gear driven cams were built into a 989cc V4 that went to a nearly 14,000 rpm redline and produced 200 hp.  All the power was wrapped up in a chrome-moly steel frame and encased with a carbon/plastic blend bodywork and handled via a 43mm upside-down forks with remote reservoir and a 4-2-1 underseat exhaust in titanium.  In a sign of its true nature, the Desmo came with both street and racing exhaust kits.

The Desmo was originally planned to only be built as a small production run but demand was so robust that the production run expanded and almost 1,500 Desmosedici’s were made available worldwide for public purchase.  Being priced at an eye-popping 72,500 USD didn’t make a dent in the demand for this bit of motogp derived unobtanium; all 1500 units were pre-sold despite the fact that the bike went on sale in 2008 in the early days of the financial crisis.

The first one is a relist from a previous post here on RSBFS from a year ago (time flies almost as fast as this bike!).   Based on the feedback count from the previous listing, the seller looks to either someone who isnt that active on ebay or a dealer.

Mileage is listed as 3,300 (miles?) but no detailed service info is provided.

Second one – 2008 Ducati Desmosedici in France (55k USD)

Here is the second one that is located in France.  According to the seller its one of the later production numbers and a lot of collectors say the later versions avoided some teething problems.

The info on this one is a little more detailed than the one in California.  Here is what the seller has to say;

  • One of the last unit produce (2009/07)
  • Bought the bike after 400 kms, mileage is 8500 kms
  • Never been on track, never fall down
  • Maintenance by official Ducati dealer
  • To be sold with bike cover, stand legs, alarm, racing exhaust, battery charger, decals kit, 2 keys
  • One new rear tire as spare

Now for the big question; what is the current value of a 2008 Ducati Desmo/DR16?   Well the difference in opening bid price between these two is pretty big (10k USD) and recent examples have been sold here in the states for the lower number so at first the one in France seems a bit overpriced.  However a bit more research indicates that the lower price is more inline with a lightly used example that is perhaps missing a few pieces such as the decals or one of the OEM exhaust sets.  The upper price seems to be inline with pristine/nearly new editions that come with all the extras that were included with the purchase of desmo so perhaps the prices for each of these are right in line.

Man Up – 2008 Ducati Desmosedici

The road-going version their GP7 racer, the Desmosedici was a limited edition of 1500, but more limited by stratospheric pricing and long lead times.  Originally offered to only Ducati cognoscenti, the $72,500 cycle was way more than could be used on the road, the spec sheet having enough of everything for two or three sportbikes.

Sixteen desmodromic actuated valves give this bike its name, gears driving the cams on this 989cc V4.  The nearly 14,000 rpm redline resulted in 200 hp, four multi-injector throttle bodies making the power delivery manageable.  The rest of the specifications are over the top – steel trellis frame but chrome-moly steel, reptilian plastic bodywork but carbon throughout, 43mm upside-down forks but with remote reservoir, 4-2-1 underseat exhaust but all titanium and exits the top of the seat fairing, alloy wheels but forged and machine magnesium,  Brembo brakes but radial 4-piston calipers.

Well on its way to a fourth oil change, a surprising amount of miles for a machine like this.  From the eBay auction:

Ducati Desmosedici 16RR in great condition! Only 7387 miles. Comes with both keys, sticker kit, cover, and rear stand. All recalls done. New tires.

Badged number 69 out of 1500, it may well be rarer if the total production limit was never met.  Dazzlingly presented by a dealer in Thousand Oaks, Calif., there are forty auction “watchers” but for the same eye-candy reason the Porsche and Ferrari new car websites get such a workout, just 7 bids as of this writing.  Ducati’s only V-4 road bike, the Sedici will only be more rare as they migrate to the gallery and away from the tarmac…

Its not surprising that a lot of the smaller motorcycle manufacturers adopted the concept of “manufactured” rarity, since this helped them compete with the Japanese.  The most dedicated proponents of the manufactured rarity concepts all seem to be italian with Bimota, Ducati, MV Agusta and even Aprilia all producing limited edition bikes.  The bikes can range from mere cosmetic upgrades like the Ducati 748 Senna and Nieman Marcus editions to serious technology pieces like the Ducati Desmosedici.

The Ducati Desmosedici was a lot more than just a reskinned standard bike.  It was instead a limited production road-legal version of the Desmosedici MotoGP racebike.   Back in 2008 Ducati made 1,500 Desmosedici models for public purchase and offered them for an eye-popping 72,500 USD.  Even in the midst of the financial crisis, all 1500 units that were produced were pre-sold, with the first going to sportbike enthusiast Tom Cruise.   Since 2008 Desmosedecci’s haven’t come up for sale that often, so now having several for sale at the same time on ebay US is quite unusual and I thought worthy of a post.

There is even a 3rd Desmosedici available in Canada for anyone who is located north of the border, or anyone who perhaps want to take advantage of the current exchange rate.  

Now before I get to the part where we discuss what these are worth, its important for people to remember the problem with manufactured rarity; once the novelty factor wears off or a better bike appears in the lineup, there is usually a fair amount of price depreciation.  Many manufactured rarity-type bikes really struggle to ever appreciate back to their original asking price and become easily available. Perhaps the best example of this is the Ducati MH900e; the bike sold out almost immediately on introduction but is now commonly available for sale on ebay.

The Desmosedeci cost an eye popping 72,500 USD when new (although supposedly many were sold for less) but now they are starting to appear up for sale with big price drops, including some down into the 40,000 USD range.  Perhaps this is due to the new SuperLeggera now being the top bike in Ducati’s lineup.    It would seem that the “bubble” for these has popped and people who bought them as investments are now trying to move them off.  This means that someone who lusted after these back when they came out might be able to pick one up now at a serious reduced price.

A lot of motorcycle manufacturers produce race-replica (RR) bikes that they promise are street legal versions of track bikes.   Honda did it with the the RC45, Kawasaki with the ZX7R, even BMW with S1000RR.    But above the RR bikes are the “Halo bikes”, outrageously expensive modern day homolgation machines that truly are the same as their raceday counterparts except for a few bits added to make them street legal.  For Ducati, the Superleggera is the current “Halo-level” vehicle, a $65,000 USD street legal WSB bike.

But the Superleggara isn’t the first time Ducati has offered a true WSB-level bike for the street;  back in 2007 Ducati produced the Desmosedici RR, a 1500 unit production run of barely street legal moto-gp level bikes.  The Desmosedici RR was essentially the same base unit used by the factory race team on which Casey Stoner won the MotoGp championship by a very wide margin over the competition.  The Desmo came with 197 horsepower, track exhausts, forged Marchesini magnesium wheels, carbon-fiber bodywork, race-spec Öhlins dampers, rigid Brembo monoblock front calipers, and Magneti Marelli electronics and instrumentation.

Here are some  excerpts of reviews regarding the DesmoseDici RR-

“Maximum acceleration pins the rider against the seatback while he crouches under the windscreen, adrenal glands pumping out a charge.  Breathtaking quickness—0 to 60 mph comes in less than three seconds—is matched by the bike’s Brembo brakes. The four-piston front calipers yield such dramatic braking force that even one finger on the lever raises the notion of how easy it would be to go flipping over the handlebars.Cornering manners follow suit. Like many modern sport bikes, the Desmosedici uses the engine as a structural member; the steering spindle mounts on a compact steel trellis bolted to the engine’s cylinder heads, and the aluminum rear swing arm bolts to the crankcases. Together with the highly adjustable front fork and rear shock, the Desmosedici RR corners with uncommon accuracy. Provide a few millimeters of handlebar input or tip a knee slightly, and the bike faithfully follows your lead.

As noted, it’s the nearest thing to a 2006 990cc MotoGP race bike. The U.S. quota of 300 units makes it highly collectible—so much so that one delivery has gone from the owner’s garage to his living room. Having sampled one on the track, though, we think that owner is missing the point. This bike is more than static art—the real art is in the way it rides.”

Only 300 of the 1500 produced were allocated to the US and prices when new were an eye popping 72,500 USD.   Apparently the bikes didn’t sell that well when first introduced, which is probably due in part with their price being equal to a small condo/apartment and the fact that they were launched while the “great recession” was still underway.  This particular unit is #413 and comes with the “Rosso” all red bodywork (the “Team” version bikes had red and white bodywork and seemed to have been a bit more popular).  The condition looks to be absolutely perfect but the pictures on the ebay auction could certainly be better so perhaps an in person inspection is in order.

Now we get to the question, what is this bike worth?   The seller has a Buy-It-Now price of 65,000 USD which may seem extreme but there are actually several other Desmosedecci for sale right now on CycleTrader and price for those seem to be pretty close to this with variations for mileage and location.   Also, while the SuperLegerra is the current “Halo-Level” ducati and only 500 SuperLegerra are scheduled to be produced, I think this Desmosedecci will actually be the more collectible bike since it was a bike that mirrored Casey Stoners MotoGp mount when Ducati won its first MotoGp championship in almost 30 years.
