Everyone has their personal definition of what’s essential and what’s superfluous, but for many, the early 1990’s Ducati SuperSports had everything you needed and nothing you didn’t.  The 900SL Superlight had one less seat and several kg.’s less weight thanks to some carbon appointments and Marvic composite alloy wheels.  RSBFS reader Steve has similarly added nothing to his Superlight that isn’t required, but made a few choice upgrades.

Ducati introduced the 900SS in 1990, and though it was a solid seller, Ducati took the opportunity to make a limited edition.  Planning to release 500, the factory bowed to the market and eventually produced over 900 Mk. 1 examples, just a couple of hundred destined for our shores.  The air cooled 904cc L-twin had newer Mikuni carburettors and scored 78 hp and 62 ft.-lbs. torque.  Upside-down Showa fork and rear monoshock were both fully adjustable on the Superlight.  Floating rotors differentiate the 320mm Brembo front brakes, with Gold Line four piston calipers.  Innovative Marvic wheels used an aluminum rim and magnesium centers.  Carbon mudguards and alloy swingarm walked the weight reduction walk.

Steve has eased the 904’s breathing with a K&N air filter and Staintune exhausts.  A Corbin seat firms things up for the rider, and braided lines do the same for braking performance.  Cosmetics are excellent and belie the 16,589 miles.  A few not-installed ugrades and NOS parts are included as Steve notes in his comments:

1993 Ducati Superlight #826

This is the cherished Superlight MK1, of which only 952 were made worldwide, 200 for the U.S. market. If you’re familiar with this bike and model year, you’ll know that it’s meant to be well ridden and properly cared for as there are not many left in this condition. The bike is in great condition and still has many original parts, unless otherwise noted.

The bike is located in Northern California, always garaged and covered. The previous owner was a collector located in Texas. The bike was serviced by AMS Ducati out of Dallas, TX during that time. No significant modifications have been made, keeping it in original condition. Some minor changes are as follows:

Going on twenty-five years old, the Superlight had the friendly handling of the SuperSport line, but with nicer appointments and a number on the triple tree.  Though second fiddle to the 916 back in the day, the Superlight’s tractable power and limited numbers have made it a very sought after SuperSport.  Steve’s has been nicely preserved and wants only a caring new owner.

The 1993 Ducati 900SS Superlight came rolling out of Bologna ready to rumble, with lightened frame rails, a single-seat tail section sporting a big, brash number plate and a production number just shy of 1,000, which meant only the most devoted Ducatisti got their hands on one. Two years before Hunter Thompson’s Sausage Creature, the 900SS/SP, broke cover, this was the ultimate iteration of the machine.

By modern standards, the 900SS is kind of poky — you could keep up with one on an SV650 without a Herculean effort — but this 1993 Ducati 900SS Superlight has been treated to a big-bore engine rebuild by Vee Two in Australia, netting 944cc. The big jugs have been augmented with a set of Keihin FCR39 flatslides from Sudco, and the stock upswept exhaust was switched out for a set of Fast by Ferraci high pipes.

On top of the engine mods, the bike has a Holeshot quick shifter, a trick swingarm that was made by JMC and is now unobtanium (JMC is no longer in business), and one-piece Marvic magnesium wheels. The original two-piece Marvics will come with it. If you are looking for an exclusive, sorted, fast-as-it-can-be 900, look no further.

I am the 3rd owner of this bike and have nearly every receipt starting from the original Bill of Sale. This is my second 900 Superlight (former owner of #712) and thought I would never sell this one. But a busy work and family schedule, plus a garage with other toys gathering dust, is a clear sign that it’s time for someone else to become the caretaker of #776. It is truly a magnificent vintage machine to ride, period correct with its modifications. If you love the now “vintage” Ducati sport bikes of the 1990s (916, Monster, etc) this is one you must experience. It is a joy to ride leisurely, always mindful that it’s a 25 year old machine, not a modern superbike. Yet a healthy twist of the throttle rockets it forward. So now I’m testing the waters to see if there’s another person immersed in their own mid-life crisis, collecting the artifacts of his youth. If so, he needs this machine.

For $12,000, this stylish piece of Italian sportbike lore is begging to be aimed at the twistiest road you can find and let loose. Sure, you aren’t gonna be slicing inside R1s at the next track day, but there is little joy like piloting such a well-built machine with no agenda but to enjoy yourself.

One Owner: 1993 Ducati Superlight for Sale

Prior to and even during the era of the 916, Ducati still needed to shift their relatively slow, old-tech 900SS. The 916 obviously grabbed headlines, handled like it was on the proverbial rails, and looked like sex. But it was also prohibitively expensive for the plebs to buy and especially to maintain, hideously uncomfortable for regular riding, and an all-around experts-only machine. The 900SS, on the other hand, was the everyman exotic, a real Ducati, but one that was based on slightly outdated technology. Today’s Superlight helped stimulate a bit of fresh interest in the working-man’s Italian sportbike by adding a bit of style, lightness, and shockingly yellow paint.

The fact that it’s down a bit on straight-line performance doesn’t mean it’s a bad bike though, far from it. And “outdated technology” also means “simpler to maintain.” Changing Ducati’s toothed rubber cam-drive belts is a two-year or 12,000 mile service, whichever comes first. But the procedure is pretty straightforward and can be done by any competent mechanic. The valves on the two-valve engine aren’t all that tricky either and the lack of liquid-cooling and the associated hoses and bracketry mean access isn’t all that difficult. That is more work than a Japanese sportbike of the same period, but no one buys a now-classic sportbike thinking it won’t need a bit of work, and at least here that work is pretty simple to do.

The Superlight was basically a 900SS with fully-adjustable suspension, a solo tail, open clutch, upswept exhausts pipes that increased cornering clearance, lightweight composite Marvic wheels with a distinctive polished rim, and the critically important numbered plaque on the triple clamp: just 861 were sold in 1993 so these are very rare, if not all that high-performance. Obviously, red is the traditional, and often preferred color for Ducatis, but it seems a shame that more aren’t painted yellow like this example, since very, very few motorcycles look good in yellow. The handling of the 900SS was never in doubt, and the older Super Sport has much more comfortable ergonomics than the admittedly extreme 916. Just fit a more supportive Corbin saddle, throw on a backpack, and head out for a long day of riding, without concern that you’ll need to down half a bottle of ibuprofen when you get back.

If eyeball-squashing acceleration is the only metric by which you judge a motorcycle, you’re going to hate this bike. If you think a 170hp bike just isn’t fast enough, this isn’t your machine. But there’s a reason that the two-valve, air-and-oil-cooled Pantah in its various iterations gets mentioned on every “best motorcycle engine ever” list: that sucker has character. I’m biased here: I think it’s the best-sounding motorcycle engine of all time, especially with a bit of extra boom liberated by some carbon-fiber cans. But it also just has a great, punchy midrange that just kind of slings you forward after each shift. The 70-75 horses a good 900 makes at the rear wheel may not sound like much on paper, but it’s plenty to whip you along a canyon road and legions of Ducati fans aren’t just buying these because of some perceived mystique. I mean, of course some of them are just buying a name, the idea,  but the same is probably true of the majority of motorcyclists in one way or another.

This collector bike is more of a rider, though: it’s a little scruffy, some of the panels have fatigue cracks around their mounting points, and it generally needs some attention to the details. But if the mechanical bits are all in good working order, you can do a bit of a rolling-restoration on it while enjoying the sound and feel of your vintage-ish Ducati. Starting bid is about half what a cleaner, lower-mileage Superlight might sell for, so if you’re handy with the wrenches, this might be a great way to pick up an appreciating classic for cheap.

I’m the original and only owner. The Superlight was bought new in Austin, Texas and has a clear title. The yellow color was only available in the US. I’m a mechanical engineer and performed all routine maintenance myself. The bike has never been crashed. It is all original except the muffler brackets broke and were replaced and the rear wheel fatigued and was replaced with an appropriate Ducati Monster rear wheel. The bike is in fantastic condition with only some spider cracks in the body work in the usual places as shown in the pics. New Michelin tires, seat and windshield are in great shape, 26,041 miles. Comes with pictured rear stand. Runs, rides great.. You won’t be disappointed. 

Miles aren’t as low as some other examples we’ve seen, but aren’t anything to worry about: well-maintained Pantah engines can triple this mileage with ease. Just change the belts and adjust the valves, top off with oil occasionally between changes if the level gets low, and enjoy. The weak spots are well-known and relatively simple to sort out, parts to maintain them are widely available, and most everything on the Superlight is shared with the more common SS-SP and SS-CR versions. Aside from those Marvic wheels of course. It’s a shame the rear wheel isn’t the correct item, but with no takers so far at the $4995 opening bid, I expect this will be on the cheap side for a Superlight. Grab this one, pocket the savings, and prowl eBay for a matching rear.

Limited Edition: 1992 Ducati Superlight

The world of collectable Ducatis is a diverse universe. In it you will find some truly iconic motorcycles, some groundbreaking models, some unique and interesting offerings, and a whole lot of “Limited Edition” badges. The 900 Superlight, a derivation of the 900 Supersport lineup, seems to fall into the latter two categories. It is, after all, a limited-in-numbers model – and one that is fairly coveted by riders and wanna-be owners. But it also suffers from the “me too” badging exercises played by Ducati. As such, you are looking at a rare model, but not one that differs terrifically from other examples of the breed.

The basis of the SL is the 900SS: motive power via a wonderfully charismatic air-cooled L-twin, two valve desmo heads and the requisite dry clutch. Chassis duties are managed by a stout trellis frame, beefy forks up front and a conventional single shock setup (both by Showa). No single-sided swingarm trickery here; the SS models are basic motorcycles, eschewing liquid cooling, four valve heads, or even fuel injection. A basic ride that pretty much works – and works well. The Superlight takes those basics and adds two-piece composite (aluminum hoop / magnesium spokes) Mavic wheels, single seat rear bodywork, a carbon front fender and high pipes. That is pretty much it. Same everything else, with the exception of the numbered plate attached to the head stock. And a much bigger price tag.

I purchased this bike new and am the original (and only) owner.

It is number plate # 942, indicates it was among the very last ten units made from the total limited production. I purchased the bike new, and it has been ridden less than 2650 original miles. It has never been down, raced, wrecked or abused. It has never been in the rain, and it’s been properly stored and covered indoors since new. The pictures above show the bike after it was lightly washed.

It is in excellent physical and mechanical condition. It has been recently serviced by a certified motorcycle mechanic / service manager, with 40 years experience.

Everything works and operates as it should. I would advise the buyer that the model-specific, 320mm Brembo, iron front disc rotors have not been used for hard braking in some time. However, all brakes work properly.

– All the original parts seen in the pictures will be included. I will also include the original tires if the buyer wishes.

– I will work with the buyer to accommodate their choice for shipping and/or crating/preparation.

– The buyer will be responsible for the costs of : shipping, crating, taxes, tariffs, VAT, insurance, customs fees, or ANY other expenses beyond the agreed purchase price.

– 11.5:1 compression ratio pistons from Fast By Ferracci – installed by MCC Motor Cycle Center,West of Chicago, Illinois. MCC is a highly regarded, Ducati sales and service provider.

– New tires ( although new in 1994-ish )

As far as flaws, they are few and very minor, due to the low mileage, careful storage and maintenance. However, it IS a used motorcycle, and it HAS been “used” (albeit very little).

There are some small nicks in the paint on either side of the fairing at it’s widest point. I attribute this to when the panels were removed, and set aside when serviced.
Also, the fiberglass seat pan , unique to the model, has a fine hairline stress crack at one fastening point. This is common to all Superlights. The seat pan fiberglass was manufactured to be very light and thin. Other than that, the bike looks and rides like a well-preserved machine.

Today’s example is a bit of a conundrum. The seller claims this is likely the best SL in existence. I am willing to cut the seller some poetic license slack because this is a very limited and desirable machine, but for a collectable example this one has a few too many mods (they are mostly period correct, if that softens the blow). It is certain to appreciate, but will never be a green frame 750SS or MHe. And while I don’t want to nitpick (but seem to be doing so anyway), new tires put on in 1994 are simply old tires. And yet I really like this bike, the condition it is in, and it’s current state. And I would ride the snot out of it because the Ducati Supersport is a fantastic platform. The opening bid on this one is a cool $10k. That would be in the range of fair money for a good SL today, but starting the bidding that high might be why there have been no takers. Supersharp – 1993 Ducati 900 SS Superlight #826

Seeking to continue the excitement on the SuperSport side of the showroom as well as try carbon fiber components on a limited production model, Ducati introduced the Superlight in 1992.  Though just a few gallons of fuel lighter than a standard 900 SS, the Superlight had some nice tweaks, flashy colors, and a neat name.

The SS/SL’s 904 cc desmo mill resulted in its usual 78 hp, with two-valve air cooled simplicity and generous torque band.  Under 1000 were made in any year, and all stateside shipments were speed yellow.  The white trellis frame and magnesium-hubbed Marvic wheels were built lighter, and carbon mudguards provided a small reduction.  The factory mufflers were aluminum, though most have been upgraded to stainless or carbon, swept a bit higher to match the solo seat fairing.

Looking excellent for its 16,188 miles, the SL presented here has the Staintune exhaust, and has been treated to a nice Corbin seat.  Recent heavy maintenance and tires are a strong indication of value.  From the eBay auction:

Offering up my rare, elusive, and MINT condition Superlight.  If you’re reading this then you know what it is.  Only 300 of the imported to the USA in 93′. No reserve!

Recently serviced and dyno tuned at AMS Ducati Dallas, belts included.  BMC filter, stock carbs, polished Staintune exhaust, Marvic wheels, carbon fenders, Michelin Pilot Sport tires almost new, Corbin seat, tinted screen.  Runs, looks, sounds, and rides fantastic.

Most sources show less Superlights were manufactured in 1993, and the factory took some of the lighter parts out of the build.  This bike shows number 826 and is nicely equipped, so it may have been built late in 1992 and shipped in 1993.  However it arrived, it’s a bike that gets to the core riding mission, a no-baggage grin generator.  The starting bid is toward the top of the range, about on par with the condition and preparation of this Superlight…

With limited production, distinctive good looks, lightweight bodywork, and that classic yellow and white color combo, it’s easy to see why Ducatisti swooned over these when they were new, even if nobody else really did…

Introduced in 1992, the Superlight was really just a 900SS with some lightweight parts on it and a numbered plaque on the top triple. Fitted with stylish Marvic composite wheels, cast-iron brake rotors, a vented clutch cover, solo seat, high-mount pipes, and lightweight bodywork, the Superlight may not actually be super-light, but should save some pounds over its already relatively svelte sibling, and those wheels look very trick.

With just 861 built for the 1993 model year, these are rare, but not exceptionally so. And while no one would argue that the basic package was very satisfying, it was certainly not in the hunt compared to contemporary sportbikes. But although you get just 75hp at the rear wheel, that modest power comes with a broad spread of torque and a massively charismatic sound.

Forget the scary reputation: air-cooled Ducatis do require more regular maintenance than a comparable Japanese sportbike, but a handy mechanic can do pretty much everything that needs doing on a regular basis, and parts are readily available. The absolute worst thing you can do is let one sit, as that seems to be when the troubles start…

The modifications done to this bike are appropriate and tasteful, and easily reversible if the new owner prefers the bike that way. Many people fit the FCR 41’s to the 900cc engine but, if the engine is otherwise stock, the 39’s seen here are probably a wiser choice and should sound and perform better than stock. Combined with the open airbox, you’ll get the classic Ducati “intake honk” that will definitely get your attention the first time you open the bike up! I prefer the look of carbon exhausts personally, but the Staintune pipes are high-quality and, combined with the intake mods and open clutch cover, should make for a very exotic-sounding motorcycle, a clattering, throbbing, living beast.

Since all of the special parts on the Superlight are basically bolt-on items, many have gone missing from these bikes over the years, so it’s great to see one still rocking the lightweight Marvic wheels. With such low miles and in such beautiful and very yellow condition, it’s no surprise that bidding is active and rapidly headed north of $10k.

At some point, you may get to thinking, “These modern sport bikes are going to kill me.” It’s a pretty logical conclusion. It’s bad enough we have to dodge car drivers on cell phones, off-leash dogs, deer, moose, apparently coyotes… We have to watch out for road debris, sand, rocks, wet leaves, and sometimes discarded tracksuit pants… But even the bikes themselves are trying to do us in, with insane horsepower figures available at screaming rpm and handling that doesn’t feel right unless you’re hanging off the bike at 80mph as you leave the Dairy Queen parking lot. But the Ducati 900SS is a bike that you can appreciate at any speed, regardless of what Hunter Thompson says.

Of course, the FE model was only the “Final Edition” of the first-generation belt-drive SS and there was a whole bit of shark-gilled weirdness to follow, although some would like to pretend Pierre Terblanche’s 1999 version doesn’t exist, like sci-fi film buffs who like to pretend “Alien 3” doesn’t exist.

And let’s be real here: the FE was basically a 900SS with a Superlight-style solo-seat and upswept pipes, with very nice, very subtle silver paint and some carbon bits. And like the Superlight, it isn’t particularly light, or all that super. But what it is an honest, good-handling sports motorcycle with a torquey, charismatic engine and classic looks. 80hp is plenty for most riding, and more is available if you want to swap in a set of flat-slide carbs or a big-bore kit. Handling isn’t cutting-edge sharp, but there’s plenty of grip and stability on tap if you want to hit the canyons on Sunday morning. The ergonomics are humane but still sporty, so you can stave off the purchase of a Barcalounger Harley or Goldwing.

So this is a motorcycle for aging gracefully out of knee-dragging cornering antics, one you can enjoy while taking it easy, but a bike that can still show the kids a thing or two when the situation demands. Or you come around the corner and find a deer standing in the middle of the road.

The FE Stands for ‘Final Edition’, and the 900SS FE was a last special production run of the old carburetor-equipped SS before it was replaced in 1998. Based around the 900SS Superlight, the FE had special cosmetics, a tuned engine, and elegant chassis changes. The special silver single-seat bodywork was wrapped around a modified engine, with race-style high-level exhaust pipes. The front brakes have cast-iron racing discs and the black wheels are lightweight. A carbon-fibre clock surround, chainguard, mudguard and body panels complete the high spec. The FE’s performance was only slightly improved over the standard bike, and it was really intended as a special celebration of the old model. Only 800 were produced. Limited to just 300 bikes in North America, the 900SS FE is the last of the 2nd generation SuperSports to be produced by the Bologna factory.Based on the 900SS SP, the FE comes dressed in elegant silver bodywork and black wheels, with carbon fiber rear fender, dashboard cover, and countershaft drive cover. A solo (monoposto) seat completes the stunning visual impression.

But there’s more than just skin deep beauty in the FE.

To back up the race-bred look, a few additional changes have been made as well. The exhaust pipes have been raised to provide improved cornering clearances. New cast iron floating brake rotors have been fitted with remote reservoirs and adjustable levers. New cylinders, alternator, and voltage regulator have been added. The resulting combination will assure that the thrill of the ride matches the beauty of the machine. To further secure it’s place in the DUCATI legacy, the top triple clamp of each FE will be fitted with a consecutively numbered commemorative plaque. There will be no doubt as to the special position the FE will assume in the heritage of the most sought after sport motorcycles in the world.

While most of the Pantah-engined 900’s are very undervalued right now, the Superlight and FE represent a definite investment opportunity, at least in the short term. At some point, all those $3,500 900SS will go up in value, but for now, they’re the dirt cheap way into Ducati sportbike ownership. But because they’re so cheap, some have high miles or have been a bit abused. Although keep in mind that the Pantah engine is good for some serious mileage when properly maintained, so 10,000 miles on the engine means it’s just nicely run-in.

The more exclusive models were pitched as collectibles from new, and many have been lovingly maintained. This example has reasonable mileage and looks very clean, with just that faded carbon and a bit of a tear in the seat, all of which could be easily fixed without destroying the originality or patina. Strangely enough though, while I’ve always thought the early Monsters look very classy in silver, the SS looks a bit bland. Purely an issue of personal taste, but I’ll stick with a nice, yellow, half-faired SS-SP, thanks.

Nick Anglada, of Black Label Meccanica is offering this 1993 Ducati 900 Superlight. This example has been mechanically sorted by Nick and is ready for the next riding season. Note I said riding season and not permanent storage in your man cave. This example has over 33k miles, and while it has some wear that is pointed out in the pictures, overall it represents far better than the odometer would suggest. It’s also a first year Superlight, so it has the white frame and trick Marvic wheels that are absent on later model year Superlights. Best of all, most SL’s we see available on the market now are over $10k. Nick has wisely priced his bike at $8,995 and I expect it won’t last long.

I am offering this collector’s classic in amazing survivor condition including the original owner’s manual and original tool kit. This bike has been extensively gone through mechanically but not restored cosmetically. This bike is #778 of 953 built between 1992 and 1993. One of only THREE hundred ever imported into the US. research Ducati Superlight registry online and this will confirm the number as will reading Ian Fallon’s book on the Ducati supersports. This model was only available in yellow in the US and only for one year. The only year superlights were ever available with a white frame, Marvic-Akront magnesium hub with aluminum hoop wheels and lightweight clutch cover. Later years (only available abroad) were only available in the gold frame. They were also downgraded to have the heavier brembo cast aluminum wheels and did not have full floating brembo cast iron rotors. Enough with the history lesson on the Superlight now on to the specifics of this bike.

This bike I purchased last July and have acquired interest in other bikes since then. Cosmetically is have done nothing more than to wash the bike, that’s it! This superlight does have some cosmetic flaws as shown in the pics more detailed pics are available on our facebook page or by email. Mechanically I have done the following as the bike sat for over for almost a year from the previous owner.

1. Clutch slave cylinder was rebuilt due to a leak
2. New cam timing belts were installed
3. All filters were replaced and oil was changed
4. Valves were adjusted properly and shimmed to manufacturer’s specs
5. Most of the hardware was replaced with new yellow zinc plated hardware as they were from the factory
6. Had the carbs serviced by the dealer and the bike tuned. tank was drained and treated before instaling a new fuel pump and filter. Fresh fuel just added on 12/30/14.
7. new SpeedCell battery (lithium) instaled04/01/15

What’s NOT original on the bike??

As I am not the first owner I can only provide you with what I have done or what you see in the pictures.

1. Original handlebars were replaced with Helibar risers
2. Original air filter was replaced with a K&N unit
3.Clutch and brake lines were replaced with aftermarket steel braided units by the previous owner
4. Obviously the tires are not original but I highly recommend that the new owner replaces them as they are over 3 years old
5. Exhaust canister are from an FE model
6. Pro Italia Oil Cooler relocator kit was installed by the previous owner. I have original oil cooler and lines as well
7. carbon fenders are either aftermarket ot have been recently refinished

I have additional pictures and I am more than willing to share those with any interested parties. I also have the following.

1. Original owner’s manual in good condition
2. Original tool kit

All the work was performed by me or the local dealer. A short history of who I am can be found on the internet by searching my name (Nick Anglada) .
