Featured Listing – 2002 Ducati 748 with 6,087 Miles!

One of Seattle Used Bikes’ service customers has a plan for a new ride, and SUB is repping the sale of this beautiful 748.  The upgrades to this single-seater are nice, but for the next rider, the comprehensive maintenance is even better.

Ducati brought a companion to the showroom for its flagship 916, but in this case the desmoquattro had originally been designed for the supersport.  The smaller bore and stroke allow an 11,500 rpm redline, with 98 hp 500 revs before.  In most other ways the 748 borrows from its older brother, the chassis and geometry, ergonomics and bodywork.  Suspension is from Showa, fully adjustable, USD forks and remote reservoir shock.  Accompanied by 320mm Brembo brakes and a close ratio gearset, it reviewed as a better choice for the street.

This 748 has been a SUB client longer than its individual owners, and a recent valve train service should relieve any worries.  The chronically over-stressed coolant tank has been replaced by a robust aluminum unit, the fuel pump serviced and steering head bearings replaced.  The upgraded Marchesini wheels and Termignoni exhaust take this 748 very close to how an S was delivered.  That nick on the tailcone could be handled with a touch-up, and a repair to the inside of the front fender would be just about invisible.  Dave at Seattle Used Bike’s provided more detailed comments –

The current owner purchased the 748 April of 2018 from one or our former customers. Looking at our past records, we performed basic maintenance and tuning on this 748 starting in 2016. It started life as a base “E” model, not an “S” model, but has a few of the “S” upgrades like quick disconnect Dzus fasteners on the fairing, 5 spoke wheels and a Termignoni 3/4 exhaust system with a proper FBF eprom and a nice carbon SP style heel guard on the exhaust. The biggest upgrade is the early 5 spoke Marchesini magnesium wheels front and rear. These were some of the lightest wheels back in the day, with the rear weighing in at 8.7lbs vs stock 5 spoke wheels at 12.4lbs. Their condition looked perfect, no visible damage, no paint issues, rear was indexed properly and there is no wheel damage in mount points.

A few other items like the carbon open clutch cover and gold EVR pressure plate and springs. Chain and sprockets look in great condition, a nice carbon chain guard is in place, up front there is a carbon fender that has been matched to the red paint but leaving a peek of carbon. This 748 was originally sold from Ducati as a Mono seat model, that can be verified from the matching VIN under the seat. These did come with the steel biposto sub frame so it could be converted to a 2-seater if needed.

We got the go ahead to perform the recommended 6k desmo valve service, including timing belts, all fluids, fuel filter and coolant. To our delight we found our favorite reusable air filters in place from BMC. We also decided to pull the cams during the service to answer the question we often hear on this desmoquattro series, “how are the rockers”? All were in great shape, normal wear but no signs of the dreaded flaking. New OEM O-rings and gaskets were used to replace all items disturbed during the service. We included pictures of internals while disassembled. This 748 has healthy compression reading with 140psi Horz & 155psi on Vert, checking leak down, 5% H and 4% V, good numbers.

We replaced coolant reservoir tank in 2017 with a Corsa Dynamics aluminum unit. This time around we gave the entire chassis a thorough inspection, replaced the steering head bearings as they felt a little notchy, pulled the rear spindle, inspected, cleaned, greased and reassembled. The inside of the tank is also in great shape, the factory lining is still intact. We replaced fuel filter and hoses inside the tank. We then installed a fresh set of Pirelli Diablo Rosso’s as we buttoned things up. We did find some damage on the front fender where the brake lines cross over at the rear, it is fairly well hidden, most likely caused by oversized front tire it came in with. That is about the only damage worth noting on a 20 year old Italian beauty. We have our service records, 2 factory keys, tool kit, Pitbull rear stand and a clean WA title.

The hot-blooded Italian middleweight was a mirror image of the bigger 916 but with a smaller, higher-revving motor. Handling was legendary and performance numbers registered mid 11’s in the quarter-mile and 150 MPH on the big end. If you can ignore the idiosyncrasies it’s a small slice of heaven. Ducati’s 916 deserves all its iconic status and then some. But for many people who were lucky enough to ride both, the smaller 748 was the better bike to ride. It’s a long-running Ducati trait – the 750SS was more enjoyable than the 900SS and the later 749 was almost the perfect early-noughties sports bike where the 999 was grumpy, difficult to ride and needed to be going a lot faster than we actually went for it to work properly. The 748 came out a year after the original 916. It’s easy to think of it as a sleeved-down 916, but the changes are much more than that. Bore and stroke are both different, the smaller capacity loses a bit of bottom-end power, but the lighter flywheels allow the 748 engine to rev much faster meaning the lack of bottom end doesn’t really matter. It feels like a very different bike and, bizarrely, while the 916 feels like a massive, powerful engine has been stuffed into the chassis of a 250, the 748 feels like it has exactly the right engine for the chassis.

2002 Ducati 748S

Much like myself, it seems that any automobile or motorcycle made in the 90s or early 00s is really coming into stride today. The 748 is no exception and although it lived in the shadow of it’s bigger brother, the 916/996, collectors and enthusiasts have finally started to chase this bike with their dollars and not just their eyes. The 748’s bored out brothers had big power and clearly displayed handling prowess in The Matrix so it’s understandable that they had the spotlight first. The 748 was the path of least resistance for some buyers and is now getting similar treatment to the 916/996.

The fact that the 748 was easier to purchase wasn’t the only reason it gained popularity. HP and displacement aren’t everything and you have to consider the total package. Smaller engines rev much faster and higher which let’s you get to the good part of the song much quicker. On the topic of power and performance, the 748 did pale in comparison to competitors. While hard to ignore for the spec sheet warriors, it’s hard to imagine any owner is sweating about how this bike stacks up to Japanese 600s. Most owners probably won’t put this on a track anymore so it’s more about the experience and that’s exactly where the 748 delivers.

The listing does leave a bit to be desired for an auction that starts at nearly $10K. However, the bike does look pretty clean and the the seller does include a lot of the original parts that were replaced with lightweight bits. The ECU remap does warrant some further inquiry but it seems the seller has the info and just wasn’t bothered to type it out.

From RSBFS reader Michael comes this gorgeous, one-owner 2002 Ducati 748. It is no secret that the early Tamburini designs have hit their collector stride in the form of the 916, and the smaller 748 is following suit. Spotless in presentation, very low miles and lavished with the kind of attention these Italian exotics crave, today’s Featured Listing is a fantastic example of a rare breed.

Featured Listing – One Owner 2002 Ducati 748!

Produced alongside the 916, the 748 shares many of the same components, measurements and benefits. The bore and stroke were reduced to reach the 748cc capacity, and the shorter stroke of the 748 enables a quicker rev up the RPM range and a higher overall RPM when compared to the 916. Another similarity: the 748 was built to win races, and enjoyed its own homologation status. There were many variations of the 748 produced, including the two seat biposto as well as a single seat version. There were also SP, SPS and R variants across the years, but all were based on the same solid foundation of the trellis frame, single arm rear suspension, and nearly 100 HP desmoquattro L-twin. The last year for the 748 party was 2002, with the Terblanche-designed 749 taking the stage – however the preferred design of the 748 allowed it to share showroom space in 2003 until all the old stock was sold.

Our friends at Seattle Used Bikes have asked us to feature their beautiful Ducati 748.

It does not take any reader of RSBFS a long time to figure out that all of us are huge fans of the Ducati 748/916.  It is also not hard to figure out why it is one of the few universally adored motorcycle.  They are achingly beautiful, offer amazing performance and produce a wonderful sound.  For many they are dream bikes and something that has been lusted after for many years.

In the words of the Seller:

It seems to be harder and harder to find a good condition older Ducati Superbike. This 2001 Ducati 748 Superbike arrived last week and we have been asked to help find a new home for it. It has had a couple of local owners, most of its services were performed by the former Eastside dealer so no paper trail of service was provided. It started life as a base “E” model, not an “S” model, but has a few of the “S” upgrades like quick disconnect dzus fasteners on the fairing and nicer wheels. We were told it did have timing belts and basic service performed just last year and our guys gave it a good look over and made a few tweaks as well. It has some nice upgrades like the 10 spoke Forged Marchesini wheels and a Termignoni 3/4 exhaust system as well. There are a few other items like the SpeedyMoto open clutch cover and gold EVR pressure plate and springs. Ducati has never been shy about marketing and creating desire around their products and for years the focus was on the plethora of special and limited editions.  Over the years many have been so concerned with the R, SPS and Race Replica versions, they have forgotten how good the standard bikes are.

Traditionally if you had asked a collector what the least expensive way to own one of these gorgeous machines they would have advised you to fine a 748 Biposto.  This was due to the perception that it was the least desirable specification.  Think about that last sentence and be honest about how it makes you feel today.  Did it seem wrong? Well it should as clearly we now know all of these Ducati are desirable in some way.  That is rather evident when you see auction results like this $16,000 748 Biposto.

As time has marched on, and the markets move we are forced to accept that more and more people are entering the hobby and every day there are less and less of our beloved 748/916 available on the market.  None of these are simply used bikes any more, they are collectables and purchased with emotions, not spec sheets.  Will be interesting to look back on posts like this in a few years, willing to bet many will be kicking themselves for not picking up a clean example when they had the chance.

This example from Seattle Used Bikes offers a great opportunity to enter an ever rising market at an appealing price point of $7,999.  There are a few choice modifications that should appeal to someone that is going to get this bike out on the road and use it.  The upgraded exhaust will please the ears, and the open clutch cover will make sure everyone hears that unique dry clutch sound.  The images show that this bike is an original Monoposta.  Normally seen in yellow, the red will appeal to someone that values having something slightly different to the norm.

Come In For a Test Drive – 1987 Honda VFR-750R / RC30

A ( if not The ) classic superbike at this juncture, Honda’s RC30 has beauty and real-world capability.  This example is slightly under-documented but has collectible looks.

1987 Honda VFR-750R / RC30

The RC30 was designed and built for the Superbike World Championship, which it won with Fred Merkel aboard the two first years.  The version found at the showroom had 112 hp available, with just 400 or so pound to push.  Endurance racing aspirations dictated the single-sided swingarm and quick release front axle, and the era required staggered wheel sizes of 17 front and 18 rear.  The RC30 always seemed more than the sum of its parts, the alloy chassis and big-bang V-4 not quite accounting for its well-balanced presence.

Seller Eurocycle appears to be a new outfit, with locations in Sonoma, Reno, and Vegas.  No history is offered but the condition is excellent for its nearly 24K miles.  Finishes and tires look fresh.  Besides new and used bikes, Eurocycle’s website shows rentals ( no the RC30 wasn’t listed ) and some kind of club membership – maybe a knowledgeable reader could chime in.

Eminently collectible, an RC30 was reviewed as not hard to ride, and might be an inspiring occasional rider for a small stable.  More history or perhaps some catch-up maintenance might be expected before sending this V4 out on a mission.  The ask is a little shy of what might be expected for a nice example, but as with so many things this year, all bets are off.

Until you’ve seen one of Tamburrini’s masterpieces in a friend’s kitchen or foyer, it’s hard to understand why anyone would take a perfectly rideable supersport off the road.  A previous collector got to this one while it was still unmarked, and though it’s not a special limited edition, it gets the point of the 916/996 design across with style.

Although it wasn’t the superbike, the 748 was equipped for fun, with 98 hp and a closer ratio transmission than the 916.  Elsewhere, the spec sheets were shared, with indistinguishable chassis and brakes, Showa USD forks and monoshock, and wheel sizes.  Weights are within a few pounds and the tank and bodywork are hard to tell apart.  Charging and cooling system mediocrities were also shared.

Probably an academic discussion, but some workshop time would be required to re-introduce this 748 to the road.  All the expendables will have to be renewed, and even then a brake, clutch, fork, or shock seal might throw in the towel after a few rides.  If it’s going to stay in the diorama, maybe those scuffs on the lowers could be addressed.  The seller has a full-length walkaround – here – which shows off the construction at the very least.  Notes from the eBay auction:

The Ducati 748-998 is one of the most iconic and attractive modern motorcycles.  This example is in near perfect condition, easily a 9.9/10 example.  There are absolutely no modifications whatsoever on this 748.  This is an investment grade condition example that would look appropriate in a showroom, on display, or as a premium condition example to ride and enjoy.  Please view the extensive details provided including a 16 minute video showing the 748 with commentary, 140 photos, and the below description.  This 748 has a clean title in my name.

I acquired this 748 from the original owner.  He purchased it new from a Ducati dealer.  It is an original monoposto model. He was a mature adult at the time of purchase and babied the bike.  He never had it out in the rain.  He was exceptionally careful with it as the bike has no notable wear or marks on it and has never been down!  He rode it sparingly as evidenced by the very low 1,700 correct miles.  Around 2008 he decided to put the bike on static display inside his house.  Prior to this he had it prepped at the Ducati dealer with having the fuel drained, cylinders fogged, battery removed, and other tasks performed.

The yellow over gold frame and wheels shows very well at least on this 748, though the usual 1/4-turn fairing fasteners were value-engineered into less expensive clip-nuts.  More isn’t always better, and some reviewers found the 748 better suited real life than the superbike.  This particular bike will likely miss out on any more road miles, though it sounds like the previous owner prepared it properly for show, so stock it would be a great display of how it was constructed.

One benefit of the tighter World SuperSport rule book was that since less could be modified for racing, the showroom specials sometimes came better equipped than their WSBK stablemates.  Here’s a Bay Area Ducati 748R whose great looks stretch the truth about its twenty years since new.

Most of the 748R’s differences aren’t visible, like the titanium connecting rods and valves, allowing 12,000 rpm and 105 hp.  Lifting the tank and opening the carbon airbox will let you see the shower injectors and spacious trellis to accommodate.  More accessible are the Öhlins dampers, 320mm Brembo brakes, and light 5-spoke alloys.  The close-ratio gearbox helps you take advantage of that higher revving engine.  The fairing is a close match for the 996, though 748’s are often seen in speed yellow.

None of this 748R’s cosmetic defects are shown in the pictures, but they sound pretty minor.  The Micron exhaust is unusual with its blue-red fade design, but not seeing any other mods.  The interest is there as bids are over $9,000 but haven’t crossed the reserve threshold yet.  The owner reviews recent maintenance in the eBay auction:

The Ducati 748R was produced from 2000 through 2002 as a homologation to compete in the World Superbike Championship Series.  This 748R is not only registered in California, has a clear Title.
 
Some may argue this is the holy grail of the 748 series because of the limited production, larger frame, overhead shower-injector arrangement.  This Race Homologation Model also has titanium rods, valves, crank and high compression pistons.
 
Bike has a 1.25 inch scuff mark located on the right side fairing and 1.5″ scratch on the on the right side of the headlight.  Rear wheel has brake fluid splatter on right side.  Aside from those flaws, the vehicle is very clean for being 20 years old.
 
This bike runs and rides excellent.

The eminent Quail Motorcycle Gathering and Ride would have this been this month, just an hour or so ride for this 748R, but was cancelled again this year and will re-boot in 2022.  Perhaps more classic oriented than this 2001 race prep machine, there still might be room for a rare R-model with the venerable 916 nose.
