Featured Listing – 1990 Honda VFR750R / RC30

Even if not fans, RSBFS readers will acknowledge Honda’s long history of success in motorcycle production and racing.  These days, Honda seems to have the engineering chops ( and resources ) to do almost whatever they put their minds to – witness their Formula 1 winning V6’s for Williams and McLaren, several years as CART’s engine of choice, and more recently the HondaJet aircraft ( with turbofans developed by Honda and GE ).

The VFR750R/RC30 from 1987-1990 is just one more example, where engineers and designers pulled a winning concept together, and the manufacturing side of the company executed beautifully, about 3,000 times.  As testament, the factory team won the inaugural WSBK season in 1988.  This rare example has been in a collector’s display since new, and occasionally exercised, turning under 1,200 miles.

As their homologation special for the Superbike World Championship, the RC30 really was the mythical race bike with lights.  From the sharp-steering alloy chassis to the 296mm front disks to the single-sided Pro-Link swingarm, the RC30 provided the racers what they needed.  Shocks and forks on the single seater were only adjustable for preload, since the race teams would be putting their own special parts.  The compact V-4 looked similar to the preceding VFR750F, but shared almost no internal parts.  Even the exhaust note with the new 360-degree crank was specific to the RC30.

Resting in the motorcycle wing of a large auto collection, this RC30 has received excellent care and not even break-in miles.  The pictures show an apparently new machine, even though a generation has passed since it was built.  The owner tells of a mid-life cosmetic refurbishment:

In general, I do believe super rare Italian motorcycle of the 1970s and 1980s are the future Ferrari of motorcycle collecting. We all know what has happened to Ferrari.

An exception would have to be my super low (under 1,200) miles, almost perfectly like-new 1990 Honda RC30.

Yes, there are a few exceptions to what I call my Italian collecting rule and one of those would be the 1990 Honda RC30. This 1990 Honda RC30 needs no introduction or explanation by me as it is such a famous Honda, that the only thing you need to know about an RC30 is if you are getting a good one or a really great one or one of the very best.

The RC30 in this listing was purchased for the collection several years ago and is an extremely low mileage bike. It was absolutely 99% perfect, however, some of the detail parts that were white rubber or painted white had become slightly discolored. At that time, almost ten years ago, Honda was still had these parts in stock and we purchased each and every part to bring the cosmetic looks of the bike back to 99%. This 1990 Honda RC30 has not been raced or abused or messed with in any way. It currently looks like new, runs just as it should and is kept on a trickle charger and is exercised thoroughly during the spring, summer, and fall; and again it has never been raced or abused (most have been!).

As you may already know, there is nothing more exciting nor handles better than the Honda RC30. The looks, graphics, and colors of the bike need no apology either. They are absolutely a stand-out in any crowd of motorcycles. Most RC30s were extensively raced and it is very hard to find one that has not been modified or raced. You are looking at one that has not been abused in that way shape or form. This bike is always kept on a trickle charge and ready take a trip to any bike show at a moment’s notice. This is truly a bike for a serious collection and it would be a shame to abuse it. Oh yes, it comes with a new Honda rear wheel stand still in the box.

All my bikes are kept in climate controlled storage and on trickle chargers when not in use so they are always ready to take a day’s ride at a moment’s notice.

Honda might be accused of an obsession with the V-4, which brought it multiple WSBK titles along with TT and endurance racing wins.  After Superbike rulesmakers made a short dalliance with the V-twin an offer they couldn’t refuse, Honda returned to the four with the RC212V.  But for road riders, the RC30 was a moment when you could buy something very special from the local dealer, even though it cost twice as much as the nearest competitor.  That moment is reflected in recent asking prices even for fairly well-used examples.  But in this case, we have an RC30 that has been in a collector’s hands from day one, without damage history and in impeccable shape.  Please contact Joe for more information at 847-774-4857.

Warm Leatherette – 2001 Kawasaki Ninja ZX7R

This ZX7R has popped up from the middle of the 1996-2003 run, mostly stock and showing no particular damage.  The owner lists a recent major service, battery and new tires.  Not a ground-breaking design or super lightweight, the mid-size Ninja did nail down a few AMA Superbike titles, and is still a great looking ride.

Kawasaki evolved the 748cc in-line four from the ZXR-750, and it puts out a very usable 112 hp.  The alloy twin-spar chassis was also a refinement from the previous model and offers a great-steering platform.  House adjustable USD forks and monoshock reviewed at the sporty end of the spectrum, rather stiff for road duty.  Six-piston Tokico brakes over 320mm rotors were up to the task.  Scoops next to the cat’s eye headlights send fresh air to the engine, and the biposto seat console offers a nice backstop for a solo rider.

With rather low mileage at 13K, this example looks great – but of course some close-ups would be nice, and we’ll have to look under that tank bra.  The color-matched pillion looks good, and the green Micron muffler will either delight or incite.  Surprising to see un-altered turn signals and tail feathers.  From the eBay auction:

Mint condition Kawasaki Ninja ZX7R. The only thing that is not original is the Micron can. I have the original black back seat for it. The bike only has 13,000 miles. It has never been laid down. There are a few minute scratches. It’ll be difficult to find one that’s this clean. The bike has new tires , battery and the front calipers rebuilt and all the fluids changed. The bike had a hung up float from sitting however that problem has been taken care of. Own a piece of history! The bike really needs someone that’s going to ride it. All it does is sit with me. It is maintained and started regularly. The bike runs and rides like a brand new machine.

Collectors will want a second -R, wanting an homologation special to keep up with their RC30 / OW01 buddies.  Not exactly plain vanilla but a perfect sport rider, carefully used, just a little young to be termed a classic…

Featured Listing – 1982 Honda CB750F Super Sport

Tens years after the ground-breaking CB750 was introduced, Honda responded to market pressures with a DOHC update, making a solid 100 hp per liter.  Honda’s Super Sport was aimed solidly at the market, and left HRC to tune and alter the CB’s for AMA racing.

Ultra-square with 62mm bore and stroke, the new engine willingly revved to 9,000 rpm, where 77 hp was found.  Honda had three engines in the pipeline, and chose the smallest bore since it made for the narrowest engine and had the best combustion characteristics.  A fairly traditional twin-downtube chassis was constructed, with a riding position just slightly more forward than the original CB750.  Brakes are big, all disks, and in a nod to the 500 lbs. dry weight, the rear disk is larger than the fronts.

 

Offered by Seattle Used Bikes, this Super Sport has logged just over 8,000 miles, and has been nicely restored.  The Comstar wheels aren’t the sportiest but have endured the test of time.  Though the  bar end mirrors are cool, K&N filters and black 4-into-1 exhaust will be the most noticeable mods after the engine’s started.  Notes from SUB‘s – website –

This very clean Honda Supersport brings back lots of memories of Honda’s HRC racing efforts with Freddie Spencer in the early 80’s… This particular bike has gone through a full restoration over the past 10 years, carbs are updated to the fabulous Keihin CR Specials, a Moriwaki hand made 4-1 exhaust was installed along with K&N filters, this Honda Supersport runs and sounds fantastic!

 

Have to applaud SUB‘s tuned-in business model – service, parts, accessories, and consignment – very neat.  Ten bikes currently ( three on RSBFS ! ), and the CB750F is right in the middle of their sporty / spendy continuum ( just as Honda always intended ).  The ask is $5,199, and the cherry condition might sway a rider who’s either not interested in financing someone else’s boat payment or who recalls the Freddie Spenser era and can no longer pretend an ergonomic challenge is that much fun.  Contact Dave at (206) 535-6812 or by email – here –.

Sweet Spot – 1990 Honda VFR750R / RC30

Beside being a regular on RSBFS, Honda’s VFR750R / RC30 has explored the high peaks of performance and auction prices, from its inaugural Superbike World Championship in 1988 to a never-started example at this year’s Bonhams auction which returned $92,000 !  This Florida bike is more middle of the road, with some 7,000 miles and nice condition.

Honda got the balance just right on the RC30, reviewed as a superbike that was not difficult to get great performance from.  Not fire-breathing with 102 hp, but built strong with some titanium hard parts, and a 12,500 rpm redline.  Never the lightest at just over 500 lbs. wet, the center of gravity was fairly low and centralized, easing turn-in.  Honda wasn’t looking to build a tech showcase, but equipped the RC30 with some endurance racing finery like the ELF single-sided swingarm and quick-release front axle.

 

About to acquire just its third owner, this RC30 looks excellent and has a nice spares collection.  Photos aren’t exhaustive but the owner advises it has been displayed indoors for the past 15 years.  From the eBay auction:

Honda lavished even more of their excellent build quality on the VFR750R, and priced it accordingly, about double what most mid-sized sportbikes were at the time.  The starting bid here is somewhat north of what the model has fetched lately, but an eBay auction can be just the beginning of a longer discussion.  RC30 buyers, and more numerous non-buyers, have often been admiring the model for quite a while…

Featured Listing: 1999 Laverda 750S Formula for Sale

Sort of an homologation special for a company that wasn’t planning to actually go racing, the Laverda 750S Formula used premium components to upgrade the company’s existing fully-faired sportbike. After falling on hard times in the 1980s, Laverda was resurrected in the 1990s, with production centered in the town of Zanè, so you’ll sometimes see these referred to as “Zane-era Laverdas” to differentiate them from the 1970s classics. The revitalized company managed to make very nice sports motorcycles with limited resources, and the Formula took their  750S and added some of the very best components available at the time to create something they hoped would give them the kind of reputation and attention Ducati enjoyed with their Tamburini-designed superbikes.

Laverdas of the period used either a steel trellis or an aluminum beam frame that apparently shared the same geometry, which was a very good thing. The Nico Bakker-designed beam frame, polished as seen here on the Formula, gave the 750S an excellent foundation, and Paioli suspension kit at both ends just sweetened the deal: every period review I’ve seen raved about the bike’s handling. Unfortunately, they also noted the bike’s performance deficit, compared to the Ducati 748.

These days, parallel twins can be made to be very smooth and refined with balance shafts and other trickery, but at the time, the only real reason Laverda chose that configuration was practicality: they already had one. Dating back to the 1970s Alpino, the existing air-cooled 500cc unit had its carburetors replaced with Weber-Marelli fuel injection for more modern performance, and was enlarged to 668cc, then again to 747cc. Along the way, it gained liquid cooling, although you can still see the cooling fins once the fairings are off.

Claimed peak power was on par with the competing Ducati 748, but the reality was that, although handling was possibly even superior to the Ducati, the engine was not. It was peaky, a bit thrashy, and it loved to rev, although you really had to work the six-speed gearbox to keep up with a 748. That shouldn’t bother prospective buyers today: either bike would get murdered by a modern 600. And while the 748 is a design classic, it’s almost too familiar, a cliché. The Formula, on the other hand, is a very exclusive machine, with around 600 examples built. It’s also more comfortable, if you care about that, and while the Formula is not as pretty as the 748, it is very striking in these black-and-orange colors.

This is a 2 owner bike, part of a very rare large collection now being offered for the first time via the web. Current owner is an avid collector of pure, rare Automotive and motorcycles. This concourse conditioned bike has all the correct lightweight carbon parts and pieces. Never been on a track, abused or laid down. In a private heated collection, never seen rain. This investment will only increase over time and you will be very hard pressed to ever see another one, clearly not like this with these miles.

Laverda’s Formula S is essentially a factory built special edition of the basic Formula, with extensive engine tuning and even more special chassis componentry. The original Formula was a 650, built in 1996, with the Formula 750 following a year later in 1997.

The engine work was more extensive than most factory specials, and took the Formula almost to a race tune straight from the showroom. Updated cams, revised fuel injection settings and carbon fiber Termignoni mufflers all boost top end power to an impressive claimed figure of (92BHP)- almost as much as the Ducati 748. The chassis also compares to the Ducati being considerably lighter and with suspension and braking components every bit as impressive.

Fully adjustable Paioli Upside Down forks and monoshock. Fully floating Brembo racing brakes and lightweight Marchesini wheels all play their part in giving the Formula impeccable manners for the street or track. The polished aluminum beam frame looks much more impressive than the Ducati’s thin steel tube!! A single seat race style fairing incorporates stylish cooling louvers and twin endurance style headlights, and is finished in Laverda Orange, the firm’s racing colors.

This is your chance to stand out and be different with a stunning example of Italian heritage.

I’ve lusted after these for a while now, and this appears to be a very clean, low-mileage example that should appeal to collectors with a taste for the exotic. The mirrors appear to have been removed and the standard exhausts were carbon fiber, but these Termignoni parts are a desirable extra. Certainly, the name “Laverda” has a great deal of cachet with collectors and this bike represents a missed opportunity for the brand: it’s a good, if flawed bike, and really did offer an interesting alternative to the Ducati. Parts for Zane-era Laverdas can be tricky to source, depending on what you need, but I expect this one will end up leading a pampered life in a collection somewhere and won’t rack up enough miles to matter very much.

Wham-O ! – 1990 Ducati 750 Sport

The 1990’s were a heady time for Ducati, with the 851, Paso, 888, Supermono, and 916 all realizing their potential.  Meanwhile, the sporty-on-a-budget 750 Sport that helped keep the company afloat in the late ’80s is all but ignored.  This eastern Duc has been ridden extensively but probably not much lately.  It has the early bold graphics livery and looks substantially original and complete, just in need of a little TLC.

A foot in each decade, the 750 Sport used an F1-style frame and a Paso-style Weber carb for the belt-timed desmodue.  Great power at 72 hp for a two-valve 750, though tractability of the single carburetor was wanting.  Single-adjustable Marzocchi dampers and 16-inch wheels kept the bottom line in sight.  Single puck Brembo brakes are front and rear.  The size is more Paso than 851, making the Sport more of an all-rounder, a little more comfortable on a long ride.

 

The seller might not have had time to form an emotional attachment to this 750, and it looks like the previous owner parked her a while back.  Still it’s complete and mostly stock, ready for a week at the spa.  From the eBay auction:

Up for sale is a Ducati 750 Sport, aka the “Poor Man’s F1”. I have been told that they imported less than 400 of these to the US, they are not common.  I have only ever seen one other one for sale. 

This bike is mechanically sound, it runs/drives perfectly. 19,030 miles. 
Good condition for it’s age, but with it’s age there are some little scuffs and scratches around the bike.  Took photos of what I found. 

 

Never exactly the top of the dance card, the 750 Sport was a worthy partner for weekend tours or rallies.  As ever a compromise, this one is a rarity not needing deep pockets.  For a mid-size, an eager performer with enough room for an un-tucked adult.  Even more unusual than the later sun beam paint scheme, the bright blue and white graphics on red fairings recall an era when Ducati wasn’t hanging back waiting for your attention.  Once this 750 Sport is detailed up, some time spent in the stainless hardware aisle, and with fresh expendables, it’ll be an eyeball grabber too…

Once Smitten – 1990 Honda VFR-750R / RC30

If there was to be sportbike bubble, the grail-like Honda RC30 might be leading the way, prices rising as you watch, with collector auctions drumming up some truly outlandish numbers.  Still it is a venerable model which stood the WSBK universe on its head for a few years – lightweight, powerful, easy to ride, and just a few thousand exist.  This one has low miles, few modifications, outstanding condition, and a knowledgeable owner.

Bred and born for superbike racing, the RC30 has the goods, sometimes well hidden.  Titanium connecting rods and 360-degree crankshaft timing help make a torquey flexible 102 hp.  The single-sided swingarm is novel for the era, and quick-release front axle is also race-derived.  Rideability is enhanced by the factory slipper clutch, and the endurance racer fairing protects the monoposto up to its 149 mph top speed.

Careful enough that he raked the gravel in the photo shoot area, this might be a unique previous owner.  Evidently having owned a few RC30’s over the years, this one was preserved and carefully modified with just a polished exhaust and matching 17-inch wheels from an RC45.  It certainly shows beautifully, even without the fairings, making the pictures a must-save for RC30 fans or owners.  From the eBay auction:

As you can see from the pics, the bike is in exceptional stock OEM condition and has no period performance modifications other than the wheels and exhaust noted above. The bike still wears its original paint, and it is in very nice condition for its age. As best I can tell, all of the original Honda warning stickers and decals are still in place and looking good. There are a few very minor nicks and scuffs here and there, but you have to examine the bike very closely to find them. The most notable are on the lower fairing chin (see pics) and a scuff on the right side of the original windshield (see pics). Some of what you see on the fairing chin is actually the clear plastic chip guard lifting around the edges and trapping a bit of dirt, but there are a couple of chips at the very nose of the “chin” (it is not cracked through anywhere to my knowledge). There are also a few areas around mounting points that show some minor stress cracking in the paint which is quite common for an RC30 with any mileage, but these are minor enough that I could not get them to show in the photos. The front of the lower forks also have some discoloration in a few spots which is also very common for these bikes (see pics). The above said, the overall appearance of the bike is excellent. 

 

The RC30’s balance and powerband led it to a long career at the Isle of Man and under endurance racing privateers.  Reviews said it was light handling and Honda-easy to maintain.  Prices had been in the mid-twenties until recently, in varying levels of miles and restoration.  A couple of zero-miles examples have popped up this year, one selling at Bonham’s for over $90K including commission.  Nothing like that here, but this is a great specimen that it wouldn’t hurt to ride once in a while.  That is what it’s all about, isn’t it ?

Suzuki Saturday – 1988 Suzuki GSX-R750

1988 brought the first comprehensive update to the 750 Gixxer, with a revised frame and shorter stroke engine, “slingshot” carburetors and 17-inch wheels.  A little heavier than the introductory GSX-R, the 1988 was still lighter than the competition and had the more rigid chassis and additional power to improve overall performance.   Looking very original and excellent for its 22K miles, this GSX-R750 has had some nice mechanical care as well.

In the engine re-design, Suzuki took 4mm from the stroke and added 3 to the bore, more oversquare and with lower reciprocating losses than before.  Peak power and torque are at 11,000 rpm, while the redline is at 13,000.  The high-volume SACS oil cooling system was also heavily revised, with larger, less restrictive tubing, and a 4-into-2 exhaust was required to limit muffler size.  Brakes and forks are built for the era, and dual headlight fairing has fresh air intakes running back to the airbox.

 

The Illinois owner of this GSX-R has preserved the cosmetics, and actively maintained the running gear.  Suspension has been updated in the rear, rebuilt in the front, brakes improved, and engine maintenance is up to date.  From the eBay auction:

This gorgeous GSX-R is completely stock except for tasteful/safety modifications, including:
-New Pirelli Rosso II tires
-Galfer steel brake lines, front and rear pads
-Penske rear shock
-New EBC clutch and springs
-Forks are serviced, new oil, new seals
-Swing arm and link have new bearings and seals
-New oil and filter
-New wheel bearings
-Valves adjusted
-All electrical components work as they should

 

The GSX-R750 reviewed as a quick-handling powerhouse, with serious racebike ergonomics, and very nearly beat the company’s own 1100 to the 1/4-mile traps.  A nicely resolved update to a ground breaking design.  This particular GSX-R is a win-win, great factory cosmetics and all maintenance issues addressed…

Rebuilt Racer: 1999 Ducati 748RS for Sale

The Ducati 916/748 was the poster child for performance motorcycles throughout its production, with the same sort of ubiquity the Lamborghini Countach enjoyed in its heyday. With so many of them made over such a long timeframe, it’s easy to forget how huge an impact the bike had when it was new: Tamburini’s creation may have been uncomfortable, temperamental, and expensive, but Ducati sold streetbikes so they could go racing, not the other way around. Which makes today’s 748RS one of the purest Ducatis you can buy, aside from a used World Superbike machine.

The 748 was the baby-brother to the 916 and came in standard, S, R, and RS flavors. Naturally, the RS was the trickest of the bunch, a pure factory racebike with plenty of trick parts and a highly-strung engine with maintenance requirements to match. The 748cc v-twin was pitched against 600cc inline fours and the displacement bump allowed by World Supersport rules helped the Ducati compete, but heavily-revised internals were also required to keep them on relatively equal footing. Wild cams opened RS-specific valves to make the 124hp needed, while a 54mm Termignoni exhaust ferried exhaust gasses to the undertail “mufflers.”

As you’d expect, the bike features a close-ratio gearbox, high-end suspension, and extensive use of lightweight materials, including bodywork and a simplified wiring loom, as this was never intended to be used on the road and obviously didn’t need connections for lights and other legal requirements.

A motorcycle like this only comes up for sale once in a blue moon. This is a completely rebuilt 1999 Ducati 748RS (Corsa) factory race bike. This particular machine was used in the AMA Pro Thunder Championship which was won by Shawn Conrad. The machine as it sits, is effectively new. It has been rebuilt from the ground up and any part not 100% has been replaced. The engine was rebuilt by Chris Boy’s team at Motocorse Ducati in Fort Lauderdale and has zero miles, zero time on it. Everything has been refurbished except the side panels which are original and “as raced”. This is again, a factory race bike and ready for your living room or to take racing or for track days. There is no title as this is a factory race bike.  The Ducati factory can confirm it is as stated. I can assist with shipping but the costs are all to the buyers account.

Those of you without deep pockets, beware: this is no tarted-up roadbike converted to track duty, and parts can be very expensive, even if you’re used to Ducati’s regular belt changes and valve-adjustment: rumor has it, you’ll be swapping out those valves [and rockers!] out every 750 km or so. The bike is listed with a $13,499 starting bid, no takers and several days left on the auction. That’s big money for a 748 but seems pretty reasonable for an RS, especially one with legitimate race history, a complete rebuild, and a bit of as-raced patina. From the seller’s description, this one’s basically ready to race or display!
