The 916 SPS was a homologation bike for World SuperBike and actually had a 996cc motor despite the retained 916 designation. The bike features 43mm Showa TiN USD fully adjustable forks, Ohlins adjustable rear shock, fully floating Brembo discs, two injectors per cylinder, bigger valves and down pipes, lighter crank and different cases. These modifications result in twenty extra horsepower and a wet weight of 212kg. This is the highest specification 916 bike that Ducati produced before the incoming 996. The asking price is $23,000 which is more than we’ve seen for 916 SPS’s in the past. For reference, the original MSRP was $18,400. See this bike on Craigslist here.

The bodywork on that bike is NOT the standard issue for a 1997 SPS, which had the “original style” lettering and “Ducati 916” on the side panels. This is the reason why the 1997 version of the SPS is so particularly desirable by collectors, because its styling is true to the original 916. I suspect the bike shown is either a 1998 SPS, which transitioned to the newer style of bodywork, or it is a 1997 with the bodywork replaced. Just a heads up to any interested buyers.
