Bella Varese – 1995 Ducati 916

Ducati's 916 was on the verge of success when fire at their shops in Bologna forced a move to their parent company Cagiva's facility in Varese.  The resulting year's worth of production were given more than the usual hands-on attention and have acquired a certain cachet among Ducatisti.  This collector-owned 916 has 10,000 miles and a sprinkling of SPS-related updates.

It feels gratuitous to even review the specs for the familiar and iconic 916, but it was Ducati's foray into the 100+ hp bracket with 114 hp.  66 ft.-lbs. torque helped put the racing version on the WSBK four times in five years.  It was somewhat lighter than the preceeding 888, with a compact riding position and tucked-in underseat exhaust.  Designer Massimo Tamburini sketched in an alloy perimeter frame before reverting to Ducati's trademark chrome-moly trellis, and the lines of the frame echo throughout the bike.

 

Having evidently had its own brush with oblivion early on, this 916 was repaired flawlessly and updated to a carbon SPS tail and rear mudguard.  The owner has had the nose painted as a SPS model and added many nice carbon accents, as well as an Öhlins steering damper.  From the eBay auction:

- Most modifications in the form of quality bolt-on autoclave carbon. No cheap chinese ill fitting parts. This includes ram air tubes, airbox, chain guard, sprocket guard, lower "v" radiator cover and front fender. 
The paint is all factory except for the SPS number plate scheme on the front that replicates the look of a SPS bike to match the tail.
- The paint is in excellent condition with no dings or dents in the tank. There might be the minor shoe scuff or scratch but so minor it is impossible to really capture on camera. Any such imperfections would just be considered patina from 23 year old bike.
- This year bike came stock with an Ohlins rear shock. It has an Ohlins front steering damper and the stock damper is included.
- It has a the expensive BMC air filter system in the airbox. Basically they are mini K&N style filters that slide into their own receptacles at each ram air tube opening in the airbox. See pictures.
Much better than the stock air filter system and high tech.
- It has a Forza (Fast by Ferracci) exhaust system and chip and sounds fantastic. New clutch pack at 8000 miles. Vented clutch cover in period correct factory 1/2 cover configuration.
The tires are visually perfect but are at the age where you should consider replacing if you plan to ride this bike aggressively.
- The previous owner literally kept a hand written diary of all work done. I've never seen such diligence. It reads like a journal. You also get all the receipts and service records. There is zero unknowns with this bike. The bike was maintained religiously. Full service and belts where recently changed in October 2016 with 10039 miles on the clock. All work done by Desmoto sport in San Francisco.

Almost goes without saying that the 916 was Ducati's landmark success, and the model's successors became a dynasty on the track and street.  Most nicer 916's are likely on display at this point, and though the 10,000 miles and rebuilt title could lead the new owner out on the road, it seems too nice for anything but an occasional ride to a show...

Ducati rocked the motorcycle world with the introduction of the 916 in 1994. Here was a machine that revolutionized the idea of how sharp a street-going motorcycle could be; it offered stunning performance with supermodel good looks. From every angle and by every measure, the 916 redefined the top tier of sport bikes. No longer an evolution of the 851/888 line, the 916 was essentially all new and was an instant hit for Ducati, leading to a huge rise in sales and a fine collection of WSBK trophies.

In case you have lived in a cave for the last 20+ and have not kept tabs on any major motorcycling milestones, allow me to fill you in. The vaunted 916 essentially made its way to the top of the "best sport bike of 1995" article from every single motorcycle publication. Maybe it was the allure of the flowing bodywork. Perhaps it was the statement made by the single-sided swingarm, laying the back wheel bare to the world. Maybe it was the under-seat exhaust, tucked away for cornering clearance and aerodynamics. Perhaps it was the 90 degree L-twin, the 4-valve heads, desmo valve actuation, fuel injected and liquid cooling. But most likely it was the total package, tipping the scales at just over 420 lbs, narrow and svelte like a 600, but pushing 114 HP at the rear wheel with enough torque to loft the front end handily. Handling was unmatched, braking was a similar affair. There was no single element that made the 916 revolutionary, but the complete collection of bits was unlike anything the world had seen.

There is an interesting wrinkle to the 916 story, and one that makes this bike even more special. In 1994 Ducati was ramping production of the 916 to meet with unprecedented demand (most 1995 bikes were build in the latter part of 1994) - the rumor is that every first-year 916 in the US was spoken for before it ever left Italy. The factory in Bologna was running at full song. But a tragic fire (which started in the paint shop) shut down the production line at an inopportune time. Scrambling to continue building the most important motorcycle in Ducati's history, manufacturing was relocated to the Cagiva-owned MV Agusta factory in the city of Varese. Here, approximately 2,663 Ducati 916s were assembled (predominantly by hand) to keep the dream alive. The Bologna factory returned online in 1995, and production was reestablished there for the remainder of the builds. In addition to the base 916 model, approximately 310 SP spec bikes were also assembled in Varese.

Although Varese-built machines do not differ from any other 1995 model year 916, they are considered a bit special because of the circumstances involved. Some believe that a Varese 916 is build a bit better, having been more "hand made." The truth is that Varese 916s are indistinguishable from their Bologna counterparts, but for the 11th digit of the VIN; 916s assembled in Varese during this period have a "V" in that position rather than the traditional "B." Otherwise, all other parts and components are completely interchangeable with Bologna 916s of the same model year. Does that make them more collectable?

Putting the Varese complication aside, the 1995 model year 916 is an aspiring classic. This is perhaps one of the most recognizable motorcycles in the world. 20+ years later, this bike still looks fresh and new. Massimo Tamburini's masterpiece was a shot across the bow of all other manufacturers; Ducati was in the game to win. Sure, the Honda RC30 offered a single-sided swing arm years previous, and the oval-piston NR750 sported both that and the under tail exhaust - but neither bike was a mainstream build. The 916 took those elements and owned them for good. And today, these early 916s are gaining popularity - with prices following. This particular US-based Varese 916 has been on eBay for a bit, and is listed with a $18,590 Buy It Now. That is a bit higher than a clean 916 might bring, but the scant 2,265 miles, the claimed originality (although I spy with my little eye a non-OEM Evoluzione clutch slave cylinder), the impressive collection of spares, the FBF exhaust cans, the overall condition and the Varese connection might make this one worth it. Be sure to check it out, as the seller is open to offers. This is your chance to own what many consider to be "the most beautiful motorcycle in the world." Good Luck!!

The Original: 1995 Ducati 916 for Sale

Considering it's one of the most iconic motorcycles of the modern era, prices of Ducati's 916/996/998 are almost shockingly reasonable, although there are plenty of dogs and ex-race bikes out there that should be avoided unless you're handy with a wrench or have lots of room on your credit card. There's something for everybody, from higher-mileage riders to low-mileage garage queens and everything in between. The later bikes obviously offer more performance and even better handling, but it all started here, with Ducati's 916.

Under the skin, the 916 was an evolution of Ducati's successful 851/888 machines. The skin, however, was pretty much sex on wheels, with a slim waist, underseat exhaust pipes, and a distinctive single-sided swingarm that added weight but looked trick and made for easy wheel changes for anyone endurance-racing their bike... The 114 claimed horses seem pretty modest today considering a new Yamaha R6 is supposedly packing 122, but the Bolognese Bullet produces much more torque and makes all the expected Italian exotic noises.

Today's example is one of the nicest, most original bikes you're likely to find and is claimed to have been hand-built in Varese as a result of a fire at the Bologna facility that caused production to be temporarily shifted. I've no idea if that really makes it worth all that much over a Bologna-built bike, but the fact that it's a low-mile, original machine certainly makes it one for collectors, although the asking price is steep. I happen to like the older graphics as seen here, compared to the very plain font used on the 996 and 998 that followed.

While prices for the 916 have been relatively low for the past decade or so, that obviously can't continue indefinitely, and prices for pristine, low-mileage, or historically significant examples have been on the rise. How long will it take for values to reach the $18,590 Buy It Now this seller is asking? Hard to say, but I can bet that, at some point, folks are going to be wishing they'd picked up a nice example and put it on display in their living room...

We seem to be on a bit of a Ducati theme here at RSBFS of late but before we move off, here is one more...a lovely Ducati 916.  For those of a certain age, it was proably the first bike that ever caused feelings of motorcycle-based lust without any knowledge of performance or racing heritage. Today's example is the standard/strada version with a mere 3310 miles as of this post and best of all, fresh maintenance.

When the Massimo Tamburini designed 916 arrived in America in 1995 it was a sensation, with quite a few young fans drawn by the lithe proportions that made other bikes of the era look bloated (I'm looking at you, Honda CBR1000).  Best of all the 916 sinuous form was matched by function; it really did handle and go well.  It was smaller and more powerful than the preceding 888 model, and while power was less than some of the Japanese competition of the day, at 114 bhp it was no slouch (NOTE: And anyone who wanted a bit more power, there was the SP model which looked the same but a more powerful engine).

Downsides?  Well the riding position was kind of brutal, and required belt maintenance was very pricey...but the design was so iconic it continued on in the 996 and 998 and still appears in lists of important designs in motorcycle history by authorities like the Guggenheim Museum.

As Motorcyclist magazine wrote in their recap of the 1990's - "1994: Ducati 916 debuts. Did anything else happen that year?"

Condition of the this 916 strada looks to be very good and pretty much all OEM.  There is an odd crack in the upper fairing and some small paint chips and I am not sure if the exhaust is the Termignoni without stickers or something else but other than that it looks really really good.

Here is what the seller has to say:

The bike was gone through top-to-bottom by MCC in Villa Park on 7/5/2016 and had the following done (see picture of receipt for all the specifics):

So is this low mileage, Massimo Tamburini penned red head worth the current asking price of $7,499 USD?   If it was one of the top shelf/unobtainum SP versions maybe but given that this is the strada version, I would say probably not.  Even though Massimo Tamburini passed away back in April of 2014 and some of his creations are already climbing in value, I don't think this 916 strada will appreciate much over time.

The last few of these on ebay seem to have gone for between around $5,700, + 500.  Given the condition of this one together with the low mileage and recent service and I would think a fair price would be between $6,000 and $6,400.  It might make a nice addition to anyone building a Tamburini inspired collection, perhaps parked between the Bimota SB2 and the MV Agusta 750 SP-01.

We all remember the first time we saw one.. in print, in person, online...  The Ducati 916 made us all stop and stare.  It made us all think that maybe form is more important than function.  I mean, if it looks this good, who even cares how it rides, right?  But then a funny thing happened... it ended up performing as beautifully as it looked.  The Ducati 916 and it's evolutionary siblings, the 996 and 998, went right to the front of the World Superbike results and pretty much stayed there for the better part of 10 years.

This particular 916 is listed as a "first year" in the auction, however 1994 was the first year for the 916.  It appears to have some pretty standard modification including the Termi pipes and 5 spoke Marchesini wheels.  Those are easy enough to change back if originality is your end game.  There's a lot of interested parties, with 50 watchers already.  If you want to add yourself to that list, check out the eBay auction here:  1995 Ducati 916 on eBay

First year Ducati 916 monoposto. This bike was built in the Varese plant after the Bologne fire.    Showa forks and Maxtor shock.  Stainless steel Termignoni exhaust system, Merchesini 5 spoke wheels.  New Michelin Pilot tires, new battery. Top end checked over the winter with a couple of new rocker arms installed.  Rear stand and head stand included in sale.  Its fast.  It has a P8 computer and Ohlins steering damper.  Body work is beautiful.

It should be noted that the seller also states that this is a "Varese" build and the VIN would appear to support this claim.  Early Ducati 916 production took place at the Cagiva factory after a fire at the Bologna facility.  Whether this adds or detracts from the value is up for debate... but it is an interesting bit of history.

It's no secret that for many visitors (and contributors) of this website, the Ducati 916 is a bedroom wall icon that holds a special place in our virtual or actual collections. However the 916 has been a relative collector's bargain and only recently has the market shown signs of an uptick in value. While the later evolution models of the 996 and 998 still command a bit of a premium, especially with the limited edition SPS and R variants, there is also a cult following surrounding the very early production 916 units for the 1995 model year.

Just as the 916 was set to debut for the 1995 model year, there was a fire at the Ducati Bologna factory. Rather than miss the launch, construction of these very first 916's was done in the city of Varese. Because this wasn't the planned production facility, the units manufactured at this factory were largely hand assembled, adding to their panache and folklore today.

It could be argued that being hand built, especially in Italy, they could actually posses more human error than would be found in normal assembly line construction. Then again, that just adds to the character of these earliest bikes as well.

This particular example looks like a carefully ridden rider that has been well looked after, and is just about to start appreciating - significantly. It's nearly all stock and the few modifications that are in place are tasteful and period correct.

From the seller:

I am offering this Iconic classic in amazing condition including the original owner's manual, rear stand and original tool kit. This bike has been extensively gone through mechanically. This bike is one of only 793 total monoposto units built between 1994 and 1995 to be imported into the US... The only years these were available with the Magnetti P8 computer and the billboard graphics was 94-97. Later years went to lesser graphics and the 1.5 ECU.

This bike I purchased last October and have acquired interest in other bikes since then. Cosmetically I have done nothing more than to wash the bike and correct minor flaws! This 916 VARESE Model is harder to find than the Bologna models. This bike has a Production date of 11/94 more detailed pics can be sent by email. Mechanically I have done the following as the bike sat for over for almost a year from the previous owner.

1. All filters were replaced and oil was changed
2. Most of the hardware was replaced with new yellow zinc plated hardware as they were from the factory
3. Injectors were replaced. tank was drained and treated before fresh fuel just added on 1/15/15.
4. New Battery also added 1/15/15

What's NOT original on the bike??

As I am not the first owner I can only provide you with what I have done or what you see in the pictures.

1. Original clutch slave cylinder was replaced with an aftermarket unit
2.Original exhaust slip-ons were replaced with Termignoni carbon fiber half system
3. Windscreen is an Original Ducati part but not the correct one for this year
4. Complete SAMCO hose kit (yellow)
5. Obviously the tires are not original but I highly recommend that the new owner replaces them as they are over 2 years old

I have additional pictures and I am more than willing to share those with any interested parties. I also have the following.

1. Original owner's manual in good condition
2. Original tool kit
3. Original rear stand

All the work was performed by me or the local dealer. A short history of who I am can be found on the internet by searching my name (Nick Anglada) . I have built countless custom bikes, my work has been featured in over 100 magazine articles internationally, televison as well as having guest wirtten tech articles for motorcycle magzines in the past 16 years .
