Regular readers might recognize the Disney cells and beige carpet before even clicking through to this listing, but this is one of this collector’s finer examples.  Also one of the most legendary Gixxers, returning to the longer stroke engine and uber rare with just 500 examples worldwide.

With its 40mm semi-flatslide “slingshot” Mikuni carburettors, the 748cc four was a nice upgrade from the H variant with 112 hp on tap.  The alloy frame was compact thanks to the 1988 update, still air and oil cooled with a two stage oil pump.  Fully adjustable 43mm forks and Full Floater monoshock are a gift and a challenge, requiring a studious wrench and some time to get right.  Figure in some break time as well, since the high footpegs, low clip-ons and hard seat challenge the rider.  In neighborhood of 450 lbs. ready to ride, it wasn’t super light, but was trim for the day.

 

Somehow wheeled onto the carpet after just over 1,000 miles, this RR is collector quality with original fairings and paint.  The Yoshimura carbon muffler lets you know you didn’t just pass through a galactic wormhole.  Its age shows only in the tank protector which has accumulated some dirt under one edge, otherwise it’s the time traveler.  From the eBay auction:

GR79C with only 1,675 kilometers (1,041 miles). All fairings are 100% original OEM factory Suzuki. Bike is in mint as new condition. Museum collector quality! Almost flawless. Original mirrors show patina in the glass reflection. Light tiny surface scratches on the right side of the swing arm by the stand bolt. Clear tank protector installed and has a dirty edge. The rest of the bike is mint. Bike has been de-restricted. Comes with a Yoshimura full exhaust system and Ohlins fully adjustable rear shock. Original stock exhaust system and stock shock in new condition go with bike. Those parts were removed and replaced with the upgraded components when the bike was purchased new. (Original parts are worth thousands alone.) Bike shows no signs of rust or corrosion. Original owner said it was cherished and always stored indoors and never ridden in the rain. No signs of wear on the bike. Comes with two original keys and fresh tires. This bike looks like a bike should with only a thousand miles on the odometer. Looks like it was just rolled off the assembly line. Chassis and engine are spotless. Bike runs as good as it looks. Extremely well cared for.

It would be a stretch to consider this museum piece for an afternoon’s pleasure, but it could happen.  Like jumping in a 30 year-old Porsche 964 Turbo, or V-Tailed Beech Bonanza, you’d want to take a short shakedown cruise, stop, look it over, then have a serious discussion with the mirror.

Maybe it’s the Ninja Turtles paintjob, or the twin headlights or the gaping air scoops that flank the headlights, but the 1997 Kawasaki ZX-7RR oozes with purpose. After all, nothing about a lime green-and purple single-seater sportbike says “ride me to work.” These are the colors of losing your chicken strips up the inside of a dentist on a Ducati. This is the livery of a long day in the general district courthouse followed by indefinite license suspension.

The 1997 Kawasaki ZX-7RR was built to homologate the bikes Rob Muzzy was tuning to within an inch of their lives for AMA Superbike and Formula USA competition. Aside from the fairly obvious single-seat tail section and deleted passenger pegs, the bikes had beefier Nissin brakes, fully-adjustable suspension and 41mm flatslide carbs.

With Doug Chandler and Scott Russell on board, the ZX-7RR’s predecessor took four AMA Superbike titles in the 1990s, as well as a brace of Daytona 200s courtesy of Russell. Eric Bostrom also rode a ZX-7RR in the latter half of the ‘90s.

Thanks to the big flat slides, a tall first gear, the ZX-7RRs made pretty miserable street bikes, which led to most of them being stripped of their street equipment and thrown around amateur road racing series and track days with abandon. To find one as blemish free and low mileage as this one is a real rarity.

This 1997 Kawasaki ZX-7RR N2 is completely stock except for an air-valve mod, and has done less than 6,000 miles. It resides in Canada, but the seller says he has explored importing it to the U.S. and does not anticipate any serious issues.

I have for sale a 1997 Kawasaki ZX7RR in very good or even excellent condition. This fine example has been ridden only 9500km (5900mi) by its original owner. The seat cowl, tank, upper cowl and fender are scratch and dent free. There are a few paint chips and a small rub mark on the muffler that I have tried my best to point out in the pictures. I can provide more pictures if desired.
The bike is stock with the exception of the seat pad which I had re-upholstered.

I believe I am the third owner and I have had it in my collection for 6 years. Although not ridden during that time, I periodically started and ran the bike and kept fresh fuel in it. I did recently ride it to the local garage for a safety inspection and everything performed as a like new bike should.

I live an hour and a half east of Toronto, Ontario and would consider delivering the bike to the New York City area or Buffalo NY. This model may be imported into the USA (VSP312) via an importer to whom I would supply the paper work including the ‘Recall letter’. i have installed a MPH speedometer face as required for US importation.

I am asking $16,000 for this clean example of a ZX7RR.

At $18,500 $16,000 U.S., the bike is priced as a rare collector bike, and a low-production piece of AMA history. Considering that similar homologation mounts from Honda and Yamaha of this vintage are going for more than double that, this Kawi represents something of a bargain.

Strangely for a higher-end machine, this nice 999R is presented without reserve and will have a new owner next week.  Some substantive updates to the earlier 999R make the 2005 edition worth asking for.  With only two owners and 13,623 miles, this 999R appears to justify stretching the budget.

Ducati took their lumps over the Pierre Terblanche design, but were acquitted with three Superbike World Championships.  The more upright fairing is an aerodynamic marvel, helping the 150 ponies from the revised testastretta push the 999R to 174 mph.  The -R sports a rather different engine than the standard 999, even more oversquare with titanium valves and 12.5:1 compression.  Öhlins dampers are found all around, suspending forged alloys from Marchesini.  An expected slipper clutch is missing from the spec – since it was not required to be homologated and would be immediately replaced by a race preparer.

This Florida machine has been ridden some, but looks excellent and mostly original,with aftermarket exhaust and footpegs evident.  From the eBay auction:

I have owned it for nearly 10 years as the second owner.  This very rare 999R has always been garage kept and well maintained with just over 13k miles, its never been down, she has nearly new tires, full titanium exhaust, power commander and few other small mods visible in the pictures.  This 999R is mechanically perfect and otherwise not far from showroom condition.

Though streetable and appealing to the most elite riders, the 999 design couldn’t overcome the market’s preference for the 916-series “folded” nose, and returned to side-by-side headlights for 2007 with the 1098.  The 2005 -R received quite a few updates from the ’04 and reviewed as one of the best motorcycles ever produced.  Just one day in, bidding is active and it will be interesting to see what it takes to move this 999R out from behind the Ferrari.

Featured Listing: 2003 Aprilia RSV Mille R

Thanks to a successful shopping trip on RSBFS, our buddy Marty has to let go of this beautiful 2003 Aprilia RSV Mille R. I think given his druthers, he’d hang on to both early-aughts Aprilias, but life is full of tough choices. The decision to let go of the big Mille must have been especially tough given that this one is a well-ridden but well-maintained example of Ohlins-sporting R model with a factory titanium exhaust.

In addition to the normal Mille’s 1,000 cc, 115-horsepower v-twin, the Mille R had a lighter, shortened subframe, OZ Racing forged wheels, a carbon fiber front fender and the aforementioned Ohlins suspension. The results, predictably, were ludicrous speed backed up by prodigious grip and micron-perfect handling. Marty bought his bike three years ago from an Air Force aircraft mechanic, who was predictably fastidious about its care. As the pictures show, its condition belies its 17,000 miles.

With a recent and thorough going-over, this beast is ready to make someone’s fall riding season perfect.

Up for sale here is a classic version of pure Italian rolling artwork. A beautiful 2003 Aprilia RSV Mille R. Approx 17500 miles on the 60 degree V twin but you would never guess it as it has been extremely well cared for. I purchased the bike a few years ago after much research and a two year hunt with the intent of putting it on the track. And even though RoadCarver mag called it” one of the very best production bikes you can ride on a track” , I just could not bring myself to thrash it around NJMP. It had survived it such a state that it was meant to be enjoyed in other ways. The bike is a joy to ride, does not stretch you out in the riding position, and turns heads everywhere you go. And did I mention the sound. I ride mostly on the track and this is up for sale to pay for my addiction and recent new addition to my collection.
This was an almost 20000$ bike in 03 and the list of state of the art racing components Aprilia had to offer reads well.

At $8,500, it’s hard to go wrong with such a well-maintained and beautiful machine. It may not say Ducati on the side, but it’ll run with the Bolognese bruisers all day, and just try getting a special-edition Duc for that.

Featured Listing: 2002 Ducati Monster S4 Fogarty

It was never going to be sufficient for Ducati to commemorate Carl Fogarty’s contributions to motorcycling with yet another race replica superbike with faux sponsor livery. Sure, go ahead and remember Ben Bostrom and Troy Bayliss with tarted-up 999Rs, but Foggy deserved something altogether hairier. Until Jonathan Rea came along in 2018, he was the winningest World Superbike racer ever. When this 2002 Ducati Monster S4 Fogarty was built, he was a man without equal in motorcycle roadracing.

The 2002 Ducati Monster S4 Fogarty is a perfect tribute, with special paint, upgraded suspension bits, carbon Termignoni cans and carbon trim pieces, the Fogarty’s “Foggy Eyes” logo and a 916 Desmoquattro engine that was warmed up to about 110 horsepower. In short, a brawny, aggressive hooligan machine that was more about encompassing who Foggy is than giving you the tools to emulate his corner-speed-first style.

This one is number 12 of just 300 built, one of 225 never intended to make it to the United States. It has Metric instrumentation with only 13 original kilometers. To say it’s mint is a bit of an understatement. From the seller:

The mid-seventies saw MV Agusta floundering after the founder’s death, and about to accept an offer they couldn’t refuse from the Italian government.  U.S. importers persuaded the company to try and revive their fortunes with a special 750, a monoposto bristling with premium parts.  This rare example returned to Italy for a mid-stream model upgrade before sale.

Before almost every big bike was an inline four, MV Agusta had a history of air-cooled DOHC Grand Prix machines.  For the 750S, displacement was increased to 788cc’s, heads re-designed and 26mm Dell’Orto carburetors were specified.  Though the cams are driven by a gear train between cylinders two and three, the alternator is behind, resulting in a trim crankcase.  Shaft drive indicating its more GT purpose, most MV 750’s came with front discs and a drum rear brake.

Not enough to be one of 500 or so, this MV was upgraded by the factory to an 850SS, which the factory did to just a few dozen leftover machines to make them more enticing.  A little history from the eBay auction:

“The Ferrari of Motorcycles”

Up for sale is a stunning 1977 MV Agusta 850SS. This is pretty much the quintessential late-70s Italian sport bike and the last, highest spec iteration of MV’s factory-built four cylinder sport bikes. Less than 500 Americas were made from 1975-77, and this 750S-to-850SS factory conversion is one of just 19 (or 27, or 35, or 42, depending on your source) total 850SSs made. Just to be clear, all MV Agusta 850SSs were conversions from 750S machines; some were done by the factory, some were done by dealers based on instructions from the factory.

The bike in question is a 2800-mile example in excellent overall condition. It features factory-optional cast wheels, Lafranconi exhaust, and its original suede covered seat. Frame and engine numbers match; not all do. There are a few nicks here and there, as you would expect from any 40+ year old machine, and the finish on the front edge of the instrument binnacle is separating (see photos), but the bike is whole and has obviously never seen any hard use. It has a wonderful, honest overall appearance. It starts, run, shifts, and stops, but with such low mileage and limited use in the last few years, it could probably benefit from a more fulsome recommissioning, including carb tuning/cleaning, before any serious road riding. A video of the bike in action can be sent upon request.

750S to 850SS conversion: Factory records during this period in MV history can be inconsistent, if they are available at all. 1977 was the final year of factory-produced MV Agusta motorcycles, and the factory was fast and loose with some things, including specifications from bike to bike. They were also having a hard time selling new 750S Americas in a crowded field of ever larger and more powerful Japanese machines, which could be had for a fraction of the MV’s $6500 sticker price. So, an uprated variant of the 750S, the 850SS, was cooked up as a way to move leftover or unsold 750S machines. In late 1976, MV recalled 19 unsold new 750S machines from distributor stock (including this bike) back to the factory in Italy for conversion to 850-spec. They also instructed dealers/distributors in how to convert other 750S machines to 850SS spec. Fortunately, this bike’s journey is well-described in both factory and distributor documents. The bike is first described in factory documents from 1975 and early 1976, as a “1976 model 750cc ‘S’ America”. Later documents from 1977 list it (by serial number) among 19 bikes that were recalled in late-1976 to the MV factory in Italy for conversion to “850S” specification. Additional documents from 1977 pertain to the re-importation of the bike by the US distributor, Garville, now as an “850S” with “86hp” (vs 75hp in standard 750S trim), and allocation to Champion Motorcycles in Costa Mesa, California. The bike has 750S sidecover emblems; these may have been left on the bike at the factory or re-installed later during a refinish (easily remedied by removal of the emblem and replacement with an “MV” decal, which is what the factory did on some 850SS machines). It has the factory optional and 850SS-correct EPM cast alloy wheels with triple disks and Brembo calipers. 850SSs typically used 27mm carbs unless bound for the US, like this one, which then used the standard 26mm Dellorto carbs of the 750S America.

All original documents relating to this bike are included in the sale, both when it was a “1976 750S” and after conversion to 1977 850SS (see pix), with the exception of the document listing this bike among the 19 recalled to the factory for 850SS conversion. That particular document belongs to the records of another of my MVs, but I will provide a copy/scan of that original document to the new owner as well. The sale also includes a commissioned hardcover photo-book of this particular machine, by Ian Falloon.

Values on these bikes are hard to pin down…but at much less than the price of a 1974 Ducati 750SS “Green Frame”, which was produced in significantly greater numbers than the MV 850SS and by a manufacturer of less racing pedigree than MV Agusta, values of the late-spec MV classics seem destined to close the gap to their Italian brethren. Imagine this red stunner in your garage/mancave/lair next to your 275GTB or 365 GTB/4 Daytona or 365BB! These bikes rarely come up for sale, outside of major auctions, where buyer and seller can be expected to pay as much as 12-20% in combined fees on top of the hammer price. Consider this bike instead.

42 years on, the 850SS shows no particular wear, but chips and aging paint and plating of a real classic.  Despite the outstanding components from Ceriani, Tomaselli, and Brembo, the factory thought having the LaFranconi mufflers black would be sporty.

Already playing catch-up to the new Japanese imports, Agusta didn’t have the time or resources to engineer a new lightweight model.  At over 500 lbs. dry, the 750 and 850S reviewed as a better ride for moderate speeds but did so in style.  The factory wound down shortly and was offline for ten years before being revived by Cagiva.  Seeming more appropriate for a white glove auction than online, this 850S is a history lesson in 1970’s design and manufacturing.

Featured Listing: Zero-mile 1997 Bimota VDue time capsule

There is no more tantalizing bike on the planet for me than the Bimota VDue. A bespoke Italian chassis from the finest boutique bike maker on the planet, draped with exotic suspension and prodigious brakes with fuel injection, the waistline of a ballerina and 110 or so two-stroke horsepower. A dream machine for the ages, it was supposed to kick Bimota into a new market segment in a cloud of sweet-smelling blue smoke. Instead, the dream went up like a Persian Gulf oil field and took the iconic nameplate down with it. 

Bad power delivery, seizing pistons, oil leaks plagued the first couple hundred VDues, and most owners returned them. Fixing the issues, which meant sticking carburetors on and invalidating the bikes for street use, ruined Bimota’s finances. Eventually, an engineer on the team that put the idea together bought the leftovers and fixed them. He sold about 120 that put out more than 120 street-legal two-stroke ponies, but by that point the toothpaste was out of the tube. 

This 1997 Bimota VDue never experienced any of those issues, because it has racked up exactly zero miles in its 22-year life. It is a literal museum piece in absolutely flawless cosmetic condition. Given the likelihood that its mechanicals are absolutely useless, both by design and from sitting, this thing is perfect for a collector who needs the finishing touch on a prestigious collection. 

Having never moved under its own power, it wears its original tires, which are now shiny from sitting around vulcanizing for a couple decades. But that’s no matter. When else will you get the chance to own a bike that is original and untouched down to the protective film on the windscreen? The thing we love most is that this bike is in its best state: an unblemished embodiment of bold vision and faith in engineering. It deserves to stay that way.

There was a time in the late 1980s when you could wander into your local powersports dealer and, if you planned properly, walk away with a bike so close to the WSBK kit that could scarcely be ridden on the street. The 1990 Yamaha OW01 was one such bike, crafted to homologate Yamaha’s efforts to beat Honda at the World Superbike game, and released to the hands of the unwashed and under-insured with a handshake and a stiff monthly payment.

Where Honda used its might to build the RC30 from scratch, Yamaha made its bones by lightening, strengthening and adding go bits to the FZR750. The Deltabox frame on the OW is hand-welded and unanodized, and held off the ground by a nearly full-race suspension, including an Ohlins rear shock. The bikes also had titanium connecting rods pushing two-ring pistons. The cylinders were fed by five-valve heads breathing through a rack of flatslide carbs. Exhaust was kept manageable on the street and screaming at the track with an Exup valve. The trick engine meant peaky delivery, a voracious appetite for oil and slim maintenance intervals.

This one has been kept stock, ridden mostly on the street and has covered 9,000 miles. You wouldn’t know it to look at it. From the seller:

1990 Yamaha OW01 FZR750R. 9800 miles, (15k in Kilometers). Completely stock. Arizona titled and plated. This bike has seen most of its miles on the street and a few track days early in its life. Never damaged, all original paint and body pieces. If you know bikes, you know these are extremely rare. Looking for a good home for this unicorn. Located in Sunny,Dry, Arizona for the last 27 years.

It might not have the track record of it’s rival from Honda, but the OW01 is a serious piece of kit to this day, and as RC30 values push the stratosphere, the OW is sure to be close behind.
