There is no more tantalizing bike on the planet for me than the Bimota VDue. A bespoke Italian chassis from the finest boutique bike maker on the planet, draped with exotic suspension and prodigious brakes with fuel injection, the waistline of a ballerina and 110 or so two-stroke horsepower. A dream machine for the ages, it was supposed to kick Bimota into a new market segment in a cloud of sweet-smelling blue smoke. Instead, the dream went up like a Persian Gulf oil field and took the iconic nameplate down with it. 

Bad power delivery, seizing pistons, oil leaks plagued the first couple hundred VDues, and most owners returned them. Fixing the issues, which meant sticking carburetors on and invalidating the bikes for street use, ruined Bimota’s finances. Eventually, an engineer on the team that put the idea together bought the leftovers and fixed them. He sold about 120 that put out more than 120 street-legal two-stroke ponies, but by that point the toothpaste was out of the tube. 

This 1997 Bimota VDue never experienced any of those issues, because it has racked up exactly zero miles in its 22-year life. It is a literal museum piece in absolutely flawless cosmetic condition. Given the likelihood that its mechanicals are absolutely useless, both by design and from sitting, this thing is perfect for a collector who needs the finishing touch on a prestigious collection. 

Having never moved under its own power, it wears its original tires, which are now shiny from sitting around vulcanizing for a couple decades. But that’s no matter. When else will you get the chance to own a bike that is original and untouched down to the protective film on the windscreen? The thing we love most is that this bike is in its best state: an unblemished embodiment of bold vision and faith in engineering. It deserves to stay that way.

We’re on a roll over here with rare Italian beauties from our buddy Joe, and this 1977 Ducati 900SS is no exception. It might not quite carry the provenance of his MV Agusta 750S America, but a ‘77 900SS is absolutely nobody’s idea of plain.

The Ducati Super Sports entered the market just as Ducati had finished establishing itself as a maker of world-beating race bikes. Paul Smart won the Imola 200 aboard a Ducati Super Sport in 1972, after which the 90-degree v-twins became synonymous with Italian racing prowess. The early SS bikes had right-side shift and almost no provisions for DOT-legal street equipment. Such as, you know, turn signals.

Fast forward to 1977, and Ducati decided that the American market was primed for its desmodromic-valved beasts, and the 1977 Ducati 900SS made its way to our shores in extremely limited numbers. Just 137 of the featherweight, 80-horsepower repli-racers landed here that year, but they had an immediate and forceful impact.

This Ducati 900SS has been restored completely with gorgeous paintwork.

Restored to perfection and still makes an outstanding presence and performance at any show and is equally prepared to go on any extended ride and tour at a moment’s notice.

We all know what’s happened to the prices of the Ducati 750 SS’s and the 900 SS’s are not far behind. If you want the best just take a look at the pictures of this bike. You will see that it is the best of the best and then some. If you want technical information about the bike just check the Internet. It is loaded with that and plenty of road tests shortly after the bike was introduced to the public. As I have mentioned in some of the other bike ads for bikes coming out of our collection there is not question that the 900SS is the Ferrari of the future for motorcycles.

This bike is always kept in climate controlled storage and kept on a trickle charger and ready for a 500-mile trip on a moment’s notice. Check out the pictures and you will be impressed!

Most everyone would agree that the 750SS and the 900SS are the epitome of motorcycle design.

Featured Listing: 1974 MV Agusta 750 S America

Back in 1974, there was no other bike to have, really. Regardless of what you were able to shop for, the MV Agusta 750S America was the bike you wanted. First of all, it was Italian, and red, which meant it had that little something extra that nobody else had. Temperamental, yes, and expensive to be sure, and perhaps not even the fastest thing on two wheels, but none of that mattered. It would more or less keep pace with the cruder, brawnier two strokes, and it would go around corners without killing you. Then there was the noise.

Whether you’re listening to a Colombo V-12 at full song, or the rorty throb of a Lancia Fulvia’s V4, or the percussive pop and rattle of a Ducati 900 SS/SP, the Italians long ago mastered the art of the proper internal combustion sound. The 750 S America may have them all beat, with a rhythmic, tachycardic and slightly uneven throbbing at idle cracking into a full-chested wail at higher revs. It’s quite the song and dance for 90 horsepower, but in its day the MV’s voice was the siren song of speed.

This 1974 MV Agusta 750S America is in magnificent shape, and appears to be all or almost all-original. The classic red-and-gold livery is without blemishes, and the bike’s numerous nooks and crannies appear to be clean enough to eat off of. The condition is thanks in large part to a fastidious seller, who has kept the bike stored in a heated facility and made sure that it remains ready to run.

In the world of motorcycle collecting it is one of the most prestigious Italian bikes that you can have in your collection.   This bike, as far as we know, is entirely original.  It runs perfectly, and, is, without question, one of the best sounding motorcycle that were ever made and yes, it is kept in fully heated storage when not in use.   It is always kept on a trickle charger. It is ready to travel 500 miles on the first day.

If you ever heard of Ferrari GTO run through the gears you will know that the 1974 Augusta MV 750 S America has a very similar melodic sound of authority which is just music to the ears.

This is a very expensive bike for serious collectors.  It is a very limited production bike.  By searching the Internet, you can read all the accolades that have accumulated over time for this particular breed, this is for serious future collectors.

They are only original once.

Featured Listing: 1990 Yamaha FZR750R OW01

There was a time in the late 1980s when you could wander into your local powersports dealer and, if you planned properly, walk away with a bike so close to the WSBK kit that could scarcely be ridden on the street. The 1990 Yamaha OW01 was one such bike, crafted to homologate Yamaha’s efforts to beat Honda at the World Superbike game, and released to the hands of the unwashed and under-insured with a handshake and a stiff monthly payment.

Where Honda used its might to build the RC30 from scratch, Yamaha made its bones by lightening, strengthening and adding go bits to the FZR750. The Deltabox frame on the OW is hand-welded and unanodized, and held off the ground by a nearly full-race suspension, including an Ohlins rear shock. The bikes also had titanium connecting rods pushing two-ring pistons. The cylinders were fed by five-valve heads breathing through a rack of flatslide carbs. Exhaust was kept manageable on the street and screaming at the track with an Exup valve. The trick engine meant peaky delivery, a voracious appetite for oil and slim maintenance intervals.

This one has been kept stock, ridden mostly on the street and has covered 9,000 miles. You wouldn’t know it to look at it. From the seller:

It might not have the track record of it’s rival from Honda, but the OW01 is a serious piece of kit to this day, and as RC30 values push the stratosphere, the OW is sure to be close behind.

Yellow Jacket: 2006 Yamaha R1 LE

To celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2006, Yamaha kicked out 500 extra-special versions of their newly-redesigned, 175 horsepower flagship bike, the R1. Normal R1s that year were on another level from earlier iterations, with frame and engine modifications that took them closer to the all-conquering YZR-M1 MotoGP bike of Valentino Rossi, but marketability dictated that they cut a few corners with parts spec. The 2006 Yamaha R1 LE fixed that.

The most obvious nod to the marque’s racing past is the black and yellow speedblock livery that graced Kenny Roberts’ 500cc GP machines, but the changes go deeper than that. The telltale gold forklegs give away the R1 LE’s tastiest upgrade, the fully adjustable Ohlins forks. At the back, a fully-adjustable Ohlins shock kept everything in line. To keep the thing straight during high-speed braking, Yamaha fitted a slipper clutch. Gold Marchesini forged wheels rounded things out.

This 2006 Yamaha R1 LE is number 221 of the production run, and has barely been ridden in its 13 years. It is bone stock down to the stock rear fender and turn signals, but wears a fresh set of Pirelli Diablos to give the next owner peace of mind. It is as clean and immaculate as you would expect a 2,500-mile bike to be, though the new owner could probably increase that total some without worrying too much.

At $12,500 buy-it-now, this very special R1 is cheaper than the least expensive version of the current R1, though it will ask you to rely on your right wrist to control traction. If we were faced with the choice, it’s the yellow bike every time.

Featured Listing: One-owner 1984 Yamaha RZ350

This 1984 Yamaha RZ350 wears the iconic black and yellow Kenny Roberts livery and signatures, is original aside from some airbox mods and jetting and is with its original owner. It has 15,000 miles on it, but has been used very sparing over the last few decades, and it wears only its second front tire. The rear is similar, though somewhat unsurprisingly it has had three rear tires.

Built as emissions were about to kill street two strokes in this country, the RZ350 wasn’t as simple as its earlier counterparts, with powervalves to ease the two-stroke hit and catalytic converters to calm the EPA, but it was still a deadly simple and effective package. With just 331 pounds pushed around by 50-ish horsepower and roadracer handling, there was little not to like about the bumble-bee liveried machines. Sure, there were simpler ways to go fast, but there’s a certain joy to unrefined fast.

I’m going to let the seller do most of the talking, but this bike is a fantastic example of the breed, and is worth every red cent to the right person. He certainly has come to the right place to find the next steward of this wonderful beast.

1984 RZ350, Kenny Roberts Edition. Original owner, 15K miles. 99% original. You won’t find many in this condition. Still has the stock exhaust with catalytic converters. Last registered in 2011. Always stored inside & under cover. Colorado motorcycle so never exposed to moisture & humidity. Have the original sales paperwork, manual and tool kit. I was the service manager at the shop I bought it from. Outside of an 82 YZ490 hold over I bought at the same time, this was the only new motorcycle I ever had. The 490 was just a cheap dirt bike but this was something special.

Only modifications I made was to remove the snorkel from the airbox and drill some holes in the top of the airbox cover, add Boyesen reeds (have the snorkel and stock reeds) and rejet.

It’s on the second front tire (which would need replaced if you’re going to ride it as it has come cracking) and the third rear tire. The second rear tire I put on was a take-off from my road race bike in the late 80’s. Unfortunately it rubbed on the chain guard, so I notched it to clear. In hindsight I wish I hadn’t done that but you can only tell if you look closely at the backside of the guard. Replace the chain guard and top cover of the filter box and it’s 100% original out side of tires, chain and battery.

Original spark plugs and grips. All hoses and rubber are original and in good shape. Paint and plastic are in good condition and still shine. Has some minor scuffs and scratches as would be expected for a rider. Worst is the scratch on the LH side of the fairing and crack at the top of the fairing on same side (from vibration).

To get this in riding condition and ready for selling, the following was done: New battery and chain. Flush out the tank – clean, just a few very minor spots of surface rust near top, Clean carbs: amazingly clean for not being ridden for almost 10 years – only minor varnish in the bottom of one which cleaned up easily. Changed oil and coolant. Clean & oil air filter – which is also original and still in good condition; not falling apart. There was evidence of mice putting some seeds up there but that is all. Changed brake fluid – rear reservoir was very clean. The front one was very dirty and had considerable moisture/crud in it. Sight window is cloudy and shows it age.

Everything works. Runs and rides well – you wouldn’t know this is a 35 year old, non-restored motorcycle. Of course despite it’s great condition, it’s still bought as is.

The asking price is absolutely in line with the provenance and condition of this machine. We’re not dealing with a Craigslist crapshoot here, and the ask reflects that.

Special Suzuki: 1986 Suzuki GSX-R750 LTD for Sale

Suzuki’s original GSX-R is often thought of as being the first modern sportbike. Other bikes had similar specifications and were produced during the same era, but none have quite captured the riding public’s imagination in the same way, combining the ubiquitous Japanese inline four with a monoshock suspension, an endurance-racing full-fairing, and an affordable price point. This first-generation GSX-R750 LTD or Limited Edition incorporated a few extra bells and whistles Suzuki wanted to homologate for production-based racing and is very rare, with just 299 examples imported to the US.

The original GSX-R400 that was introduced a year earlier used a more traditional liquid-cooling system, but the 750 and later 1100 ditched the radiator and additional plumbing to save weight. To keep the big four-valve, twin-cam four cool, Suzuki’s Advanced Cooling System or “SACS” that featured a double-chambered oil pump to circulate and cool the bike’s lubricant, along with oil jets that sprayed the undersides of the pistons. First and second generation GSX-Rs are often referred to as “oil boilers” as a result.

The Limited Edition was distinguished by a vented dry clutch, solo seat, and a longer swingarm, along with Suzuki’s electronic anti-dive forks from the GSX-R1100 and that very distinctive graphics scheme. Cost for the LTD was significantly higher than the standard model, but collectors didn’t care much then or now. Interestingly, the rare and valuable dry clutch made the bike a popular target for thieves when new but, luckily many survived to grace the pages of RSBFS!

This is a running motorcycle that just had a complete service. Mostly original paint work here, there are a few scratches. (see pictures please). Period correct Yoshimura Duplex pipe in near mint condition, coupled with factory set of 1989 Slingshot carburetors jetted with a Factory pipe products jet kit. Carbs were just Ultrasonic tank cleaned and are ready to be synced. I did not want to add gas after the cleaning so the motorcycle has no fuel in the system whatsoever. Dry clutch works great and OH that sound.

The bike will need tires and a carb sync if you want to ride it. We can preform this service for you at an additional charge.

Also this bike can be delivered to the port of Long Beach for a flat fee of $100.00. Please have a look at the pictures and ask any questions before buying. Motorcycle sold as is.

There are a couple minor blemishes [note the deep scratch on the belly pan in the pic of the headers], but looks very clean and original, apart from the period-correct exhaust and the later-model carburetors. With 12,000 miles on the odometer, it’s pretty clear that “a complete service” at the very least included an extremely thorough cleaning, and this looks like it could be a great opportunity to pick up a sharp-looking homologation special, although the $17,900 asking price is a bit steep.

Please be real: 1990 Ducati 851 SP2

You’d think at a $55,000 ask, it wouldn’t be beyond the pale to ask for more than two photos of a motorcycle, but what do we know? And, be that as it may, most motorcycles are not the 1990 Ducati 851 SP2, a rare-as-rocking-horse-poo repli-racer from Ducati’s renaissance as a superbike racing brand.

As the name implies, this was the second evolution of the 851 Sport Production, and came with bigger valves, a 45mm Termignoni exhaust and fully-adjustable Ohlins suspension on both ends. The four-valve liquid-cooled v-twin in the standard 851 was exotic enough for most, but the SP2 mill was truly special, pushing out nigh on 120 horsepower from two cylinders at a time when that was an impressive figure from four pots.

Unfortunately, the pictures don’t do much justice to this machine, though it appears to be in very clean condition with a set of modern Michelin tires. The shot of the triple clamp matches the description’s claim that this is bike number 250.

The asking price is a little eye-watering, but you’ll be hard pressed to find another 1990 Ducati 851 SP2, and there is no doubting the heritage and provenance the bike carries.
