Down but not out: 2004 MV Agusta F4 750 SPR

When MV Agusta dropped the F4 to an adoring public, they made a significant splash. This was important, as the F4 was the rebirth of the legendary brand. Penned by designer Massimo Tamburini, the F4 was a spiritual successor to the Ducati 916 line. Featuring a timeless silhouette coupled with an all-new inline four cylinder 750cc power plant, the MV Agusta simply oozed quality and exclusivity. Eventually the 750 grew into a 1,000cc variant, and each of the two capacity lines spawned numerous special editions. In total there were nine different 750 variants offered, along with a dozen different 1,000cc limited offerings. Today’s F4 SPR was the pinnacle of the 750 line and intended for racetrack use. Both the SPR and the later SR (intended as a reimagined ORO edition) utilized a power unit derived from the Senna edition, itself a more powerful engine derived from the 750 Evo 2 (which was originally intended as a SPR model), which itself was an upgraded motor based on the standard 750 S unit. All clear?

To build an SPR required new engine internals to improve power and engine characteristics befitting a race bike. More power (146 HP @ 13,000 RPM) improved straight line performance when fitted with the race exhaust and eprom. The transmission was altered to a close ratio gearbox with a new clutch assembly. The chassis remained standard across the full 750 family, but suspension was upgraded for racetrack use. The SPR utilizes a larger fork with nitride treatment to reduce stiction. A race-spec rear shock sourced from Sachs was a step up from previous models. Weight was reduced through the use of carbon fiber body panels. As with all special F4s, a limited edition numbering scheme was created and a plate was attached to the headstock. The seller has included some great information about the F4 SPR, so I will let him pick up the story:

This is a very limited production MV Agusta F4 750 SPR #268 out of total 300 SPR production. At 146 hp the F4 SPR is the most powerful F4 750 produced. It was built only for 6 short months (June-December of 2003) to culminate the end of the F4 750 series production. There was only one color availabe, the flat black.

This is not a gussied up F4 but a distinct model within the series, produced by MV primarily for track use. SPR engine was equiped with a new cylinder head with re-designed combustion chambers, improved intake and exhaust manifolds, hotter cams, Mahle pistons with oil jet cooling, lightweight crankshaft. This resulted in 146 hp at 13,000 rpm. To improve performance on the track, SPR is equipped with a close ration gearbox. Depending on the final drive used, SPR’s top speed ranged from 170 mph to 183 mph – not bad for a 750cc motorcycle!

Suspension upfront are massive 49 mm Marzocchi forks with titanium nitride treatment. Sachs Racing damper is in the rear and has a dual compression adjustment for high and low speed. Front brakes are dual 6 piston calipers with a single 4 piston caliper in the rear.

#268 is a strong runner. It does not overheat, leak or smoke. It comes with a full service history with most work done at Pro Italia. It just had a $650 service performed which included new battery, fuel pump, starter solenoid and chain lube. The stand switch was intermittent and was disconnected which results in the N green light to remain on constant. Tires are ok but would recommend replacing if you will be riding this SPR in anger.

It comes with an Ohlins steering damper, factory tool kit, owner manual, service records and one key. It has a clean California title and registration that is good until 12.18.2020

This SPR is not a garage queen. It was down earlier in its life and with the exception of the the slight damage to the rear brake pedal and a cosmetic (no punctures or leaks) dent in the radiator (see pics for both). The rest is cosmetic, primarily the right side fairings are scratched and the front fairing has two small cracks – one just above the headlight and the other below the mirror which I found only after cleaning the bike. The windscreen has a small crack on the top. I have included pictures with the fairings off for better inspection as well as the pictures of the damages. Please feel free to ask any questions.

MV Agusta F4 SPR models are rare. 300 unit count rare. They are some of the most capable 750s on the planet, exclusive as all get out, and expensive on the used market. Expect to part with $15K+ for an impeccable example of the breed. Which brings us to the downside of this particular example: it has been down. Purists will tell you to run – not walk – away from this one. But purists may have the cash a spic-n-span example will bring (even a lovingly used SPR is over $10k these days) And purists are more likely to collect than ride. If you are seeking an awesome bike that you want to use – possibly even on track days – do you really want a museum piece? The pictures show some bodywork damage, but some deeper inspection might be warranted to ensure the rest of the components are straight and serviceable. If they are, this could be a cheaper way to ease yourself into a rare and coveted SPR.

Today’s bike has a Buy It Now asking price of $6,600, with the seller open to offers. While that is not a bad deal for a rare SPR model, potential buyers will have to trade off between cost and value. Part of the bargain here is the in the unknown – damage which is beyond cosmetic. The seller has done a good job of describing and showing the effects of the impact, so that should help. If there are no hidden issues lurking, then all the better. But don’t discount the cosmetic either; those carbon skins do not come cheaply, if they can still be had at all (I don’t know about SPR parts availability – knowledgeable readers feel free to chime in). At the end of the day, you could have a rare rocket for fun, but not likely to be on the same level as a collector bike. Check it out here and then make your choice: are you willing to trade sweat equity for status, or do you buy only the best? Good Luck!!

CitiSmart – 2006 Ducati Paul Smart 1000LE

Arguably the pick of the SportClassic litter, the 2006 Paul Smart Limited Edition sacrificed practicality for the cool of a teal-framed monoposto.  This NYC example has moderate miles but is super clean.

Ducati’s air-cooled dual spark engine was originally used in the Monster, but its relatively plumbing-free presentation made it perfect for the vintage looking SportClassics.  92 hp on tap make it more than a design exercise.  The frame color and fairing harken back to the 1972 Imola winner, and spoked wheels ping appropriately.  Appointments are first rate with big 320mm Brembo disks and Öhlins dampers all around.

Despite city life and 10K-plus miles, this PS looks undamaged and clean enough to put right in the garage.  Even the Termignoni megaphones fit the vintage look well, though a quick spritz on the header pipes would do wonders.  From the eBay auction:

While a low or no-mile example might push the mid-twenties, this auction shows a starting bid of $18K, just above the original MSRP.  Harder to quantify is the total production of just 2,000, and then considering only 500 or so made it to our shores, a pristine example like this might be worth a second look.

Featured Listing: 2009 Aprilia RS125 Jorge Lorenzo Edition

Before the three MotoGP world titles made him synonymous with factory Yamaha, Jorge Lorenzo made a damn solid case that he was the next GOAT on 125cc and 250cc two-stroke Derbis and Aprilias in the big show’s feeder series. After three seasons on Derbis in 125, Lorenzo made the leap to 250s with Honda in 2005.

But in 2006, he moved from Honda to Aprilia and everything changed. He put the series on his back and ran to the next two world titles aboard the Fortuna-liveried Italian machines. This 2009 Aprilia RS125 pays tribute to those machines and those championships in the “Spain’s No. 1” livery that Fortuna used in countries that forbade tobacco sponsorship.

With just 28 horsepower, you’ll never challenge a Lorenzo lap record on one of these things, but with less than 300 pounds to push around, there’s plenty of fun to be had, especially when the road gets skinny and twisty. With just 10 miles on the dial, it’s safe to say this one hasn’t been fully enjoyed yet. It’s a US version, which means its lights are inoperable and it hasn’t got mirrors. Thanks to the EPA, this thing was never going to be legal on these shores. But as a short-track blaster or a pure collector’s item, its pedigree is hard to argue.

January in Italy ! – 1998 Ducati 916 Senna #199 of 300

Happy New Year to RSBFS readers !

As the 916 era progressed, three Senna editions were issued, with changes mostly to the available colors.  In a suitably commemorative black with Ferrari red wheels, this Italian example whispers, “airline tickets”.

On its 1994 introduction, the 916 set the sportbike universe on its ear, with the poster-ready Tamburrini design and torquey fuel-injected twin.  A combination of 11:1 compression, heavily oversquare cylinders ( 94 x 66 mm ), and Weber fuel injection made 114 hp available.  Showa handled damping up front with 43mm inverted forks, and the single-sided rear swingarm had an Öhlins adjustable.  The headstock was also adjustable for a more expert rider.  320mm floating front disks provide most of the braking, with a 220mm disk at the rear.  Perhaps not the first bike with underseat exhausts, but certainly an iconic example.

In mirror black, this 916 looks almost flawless.  Without the road wear on the oil cooler, it could almost be presented as having the 27 km’s the new odometer shows.  From the eBay auction:

The Senna III final version first appeared in 1998, 916 SPS chassis and running gear, Pankl con-rods inside the engine, carbon-fiber airbox. Overall, only 300 bikes of the Senna III were built, and the present one is number 199 of the series and carries an identifying plaque on the top yoke. It underwent a complete check and restoration in Ducati Factory in Borgo Panigale in 2018, including belts, valves, seals and gaskets, new exhaust system, clutch, braking pads, filters, sprocket, chain, pulley, tyres, footpeg and so on, all on the records, see documents in attached pics. The bike is 100% original. The odometer is new, the bike had around 10,000 km.

Good that the previous owners got their kilometers in, because the rarity, condition and price of this commemorative will probably put a lot more miles out of the question.  Not quite sure whether a 916 SPS is the basis for the Senna III, as most references show the displacement to be 916cc, where 996cc’s would be expected on an SPS from that year.  Unfortunately, the location of this 916 is far north from the sunny sole of Italy, but it would be epic to van it down south for a couple of days of riding before the trip home.  Oh, and stop by the factory…  All the best for 2020!

Scrambling for a last-second, money-is-no-object gift for two of your closest friends? Look no further! Even the colors are holiday-themed on this brace of 2018 Ducati 1299 Panigale R Final Editions. All joking aside, there isn’t much time left to jump on these two, and they’d make a hell of a lot cooler gift than a Mercedes with a bow on the hood.

More than just a pretty paintjob, the 2018 Ducati Panigale 1299R Final Edition carried the most advanced v-twin Bologna ever spat out, which was fitting as it signaled the end of Ducati’s development of its most famous asset. With bigger vales, 13.1:1 compression, titanium connecting rods and electronics that would embarrass NASA, the FE managed 209 horsepower and 104 lb-ft of torque. The new fours may be more powerful in their ultimate form, but they’re cheating with more pots. This truly will go down as one of the engines of the century.

There were scant options available, as the bikes came with every box you could check as standard. That means electronic Ohlins suspension front and rear, top-whack Brembos and a full titanium Akrapovic exhaust system. Wet weight, with almost a full tank of gas, was 419 pounds.

As you might expect, there’s little fault to find with either of these two examples. Numbers 461 and 519 of 1,299 produced, they have only done 610 and 765 miles, respectively. Number 519 entirely as it left Bologna, and is listed slightly lower than 461. Number 461 has had its wheels powdercoated white and wears the optional Akrapovic titanium racing exhaust. They’re both rolling on their stock Pirelli Diablos.

King Kenny’s steed: 1985 Yamaha RZ350

The Yamaha RZ350 lived a pretty short life on these shores, eventually leaving us in the face of EPA fleet emissions regulations and sales that paled in comparison to its bigger four-stroke stablemates. But, if you were serious about roadracing, or were a serious fan of the 500cc Grand Prix races of the time, the RZ was your mount. The little parallel twin leaves none of its inspirations to the imagination, wearing the signature of American 500cc ace Kenny Roberts front and center on its red, white and blue frame and bodywork.

With just about 45 horsepower, none of which was available until about 6,000 RPM, the 375-pound RZ rewarded momentum and bravery over raw power and speed. Still, even with limited horsepower, the thing managed to click off a 13-second quarter mile at 100 mph in the hands of CycleWorld. That is musclecar shaming performance in a package that will turn with aplomb when you ask it to.

This 1985 Yamaha RZ350 has a few tasteful mods and has covered just under 12,000 miles in its 34 years. It is in very nice condition, with just a few scratches, dings and touch ups on the frame and body work.

Featured Listing: 1974 MV Agusta 750 S America

Back in 1974, there was no other bike to have, really. Regardless of what you were able to shop for, the MV Agusta 750S America was the bike you wanted. First of all, it was Italian, and red, which meant it had that little something extra that nobody else had. Temperamental, yes, and expensive to be sure, and perhaps not even the fastest thing on two wheels, but none of that mattered. It would more or less keep pace with the cruder, brawnier two strokes, and it would go around corners without killing you. Then there was the noise.

Whether you’re listening to a Colombo V-12 at full song, or the rorty throb of a Lancia Fulvia’s V4, or the percussive pop and rattle of a Ducati 900 SS/SP, the Italians long ago mastered the art of the proper internal combustion sound. The 750 S America may have them all beat, with a rhythmic, tachycardic and slightly uneven throbbing at idle cracking into a full-chested wail at higher revs. It’s quite the song and dance for 90 horsepower, but in its day the MV’s voice was the siren song of speed.

This 1974 MV Agusta 750S America is in magnificent shape, and appears to be all or almost all-original. The classic red-and-gold livery is without blemishes, and the bike’s numerous nooks and crannies appear to be clean enough to eat off of. The condition is thanks in large part to a fastidious seller, who has kept the bike stored in a heated facility and made sure that it remains ready to run.

You should know that I am a serious collector, with a large motorcycle collection.  I decided to sell some of the most valuable motorcycles in the collection.  These motorcycles represent some of the most iconic motorcycles ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s.  Those motorcycles are now being offered up for sale one by one.  These motorcycles were targeted for by me for my collection many years ago when the best of the best was available and that is what I purchased.

In the world of motorcycle collecting it is one of the most prestigious Italian bikes that you can have in your collection.   This bike, as far as we know, is entirely original.  It runs perfectly, and, is, without question, one of the best sounding motorcycle that were ever made and yes, it is kept in fully heated storage when not in use.   It is always kept on a trickle charger. It is ready to travel 500 miles on the first day.

If you ever heard of Ferrari GTO run through the gears you will know that the 1974 Augusta MV 750 S America has a very similar melodic sound of authority which is just music to the ears.

This is a very expensive bike for serious collectors.  It is a very limited production bike.  By searching the Internet, you can read all the accolades that have accumulated over time for this particular breed, this is for serious future collectors.

They are only original once.

Wild Wolf: 1986 Suzuki RG500 Walter Wolf

If you’re not into oil drilling and late-1970s Formula 1, you might be nonplussed at the handsome red and purple livery that graces this otherwise-standard 1986 Suzuki RG500 Gamma. But, under the alliterative name and the cool-if-dated graphics lies a story of early business success followed by a longshot investment in a passion project that just so happened to pay off.

After making his money selling oil drilling parts, Austrian-via-Canada businessman Walter Wolf  in 1975 bought most of the Williams Racing Team and all of Hesketh Racing and made a go at Formula 1 ownership. Soon after, he rebranded the team with his name, hired Jody Scheckter and won the first race his team entered with the new branding. Not bad. After another couple seasons, Wolf got bored and sold the team, but the cool graphics and handsome livery needed somewhere to land.

Enter, the 1986 Suzuki RG500 Gamma. With Wolf’s colors painted on, Suzuki had a defacto special edition of the already potent twin-crank parallel four two-stroke GP hero. This one is a Japanese market model that landed in South Africa in 2013, where it received a mechanical refresh less than 120 miles ago. Throw some new tires at it, and the 95-horsepower knife’s edge animal will be ready to be a backroads thrill seeker or garage display artifact.

Cosmetically and mechanical the vehicle is an superb condition. She starts on the first kick every time, even from cold with the help of the choke.
The RG has been serviced less than 200 Km ago which included steering neck and wheel bearing replacement as well as complete carburettor refurbishments.
The period correct tyres that’s currently fitted are fine for display purpose however I would recommend that they be replaced if the Gamma is going to be ridden with some proper enthusiasm as Suzuki intended.

As you can hear and see, this thing idles like a champ and is in truly immaculate cosmetic condition. At $18,500, this special edition of a rare bike is priced as what it is, but there’s no doubting that some lucky collector will roll home with an absolute gem.
