Low Tech, Big Fun: 1997 Honda CBR600 F3 for Sale

When the original “jellymould” CBR600F Hurricane was introduced in 1987 the enclosed, sleekly aerodynamic fairing hid a dark secret: a steel frame. While racier competitors had switched to lightweight aluminum construction, the simple, effective CBR600 F3 stuck with the less expensive material until the CBR600 F4 was introduced in 1999. Although the styling was hyper-modern, it also helped Honda save money on manufacturing and development costs. Instead of a finished frame and engine cases, or carefully routed wiring and hoses, the whole functional mess could all just be hidden behind relatively cheap, sleek plastic. So while pragmatism may have driven the design and the ingredients were, on their own, not very exotic, the complete package was a world-beater when it was introduced.

Produced between 1995 and 1998, the F3 was an evolution of the earlier CBR600 F2. Compared to that bike, it offered adjustable cartridge forks, a Pro-Link rear, and and ram-air to feed the engine. The result was a few more ponies from the 599cc inline four and a 454lb wet weight. That might sound heavy for a 600, but it was just a couple pounds heavier than a ZX-6R or GSX-R600 of the same period, and actually a good bit lighter than the aluminum-framed YZF600. At a claimed 105hp, peak power wasn’t best-in-class either, but the CBR offered a smooth spread of power with no real dips or flat spots, the perfect balance in a road engine and pretty handy on track as well.

The CBR600 was always pitched as a more versatile mount than competitors from Suzuki and Kawasaki, a bike that was at home in the canyons, in the city, and could even do a bit of commuting or light touring. The CBR600 was never really about the numbers, it was about the complete package, a sort of Goldilocks solution to the Supersport problem. It didn’t make the most in-class horsepower. It wasn’t the lightest. It didn’t have much in the way of headline-stealing innovation. It didn’t even have any acronyms plastered across the fairings!

It also made a perfectly good foundation for a racebike, winning multiple AMA SuperSport Championships, and didn’t seem to suffer at all for its relatively ordinary underpinnings. Eventually, the entire class became more and more track focused, and led to the development of the CBR600RR that was sold alongside the CBR600 F4i as a direct alternative to the high-strung offerings from Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha. But for a while, Honda’s versatile CBR meant you really could have your cake and eat it too.

This particular machine needs a bit of maintenance before it time-warps you back to your youth, but the miles are shockingly low for such a practical machine, and it looks to be in exceptional cosmetic condition. It may never be as desirable as a CBR900, but I these are certainly functional classics and much more attainable, since prices for the bigger machine are currently spiraling upwards and nice examples are hard to find.

Hello, up for sale is my 1997 Honda CBR600F3 with 2,916 orig miles.  Clean title in hand in my name. Bought it 4 years ago and spent lots of time and money trying to make it near perfect (it’s the same model, year and color as what I had in college so it was me trying to relive my youth). Sadly, my bad back in combination with it being too dangerous for a slow, fat guy like myself to ride in Vegas forces the sale.  I have all receipts and replaced parts baggies/boxes for every OEM part I put on it. I saved the old parts to prove it wasn’t wrecked. Feel free to contact me to see it in person 850-five 86-38two8.  Not showroom perfect but damn nice for a 1997! PS: front chock included!

The bad: carbs need to be cleaned. Ran fine in 2014 and I did drain bowls before tear down but no luck in getting it started. Needs battery too as no point in buying one and letting it rot.

The good: over $1,000 in brand new parts. No cracked fairings at all!

The CBR600 may have been anything but exotic, but that was exactly the point: it was an everyman sportbike, and it was damn good at being that. The shape has aged pretty well I think, and the non-standard gold-painted wheels really flatter the Erion Racing-inspired colors. It’s a shame that this attempt to capture the seller’s youth has been put up for sale, but his loss is your gain! Can you really put a price on reliving the dreams of your youth? Apparently you can, and those dreams are going to cost you $3,950.00. That Buy It Now price is obviously on the high-end for an F3, but if this one is as nice in person as it looks in pictures, I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a better example with so few miles.

Reserve met: Pristine 1996 Honda CBR900RR

The Honda CBR900RR is a bucketlist bike for me. Everything about the machine speaks to me, from its status as a genre-definer to the styling and panache that come from being built when Honda was still an innovative powerhouse.

The ’90s were still heady times for Big Red, as the marque spat out mind blowing racing machines and sold facsimilies thereof to the general public. When the CBR900RR came along, it didn’t betray the family tradition, bringing 600 supersport size and literbike power.

This 1996 Honda CBR900RR wears the iconic Erion Racing livery, celebrating the team’s success aboard race-kitted versions. It still has its original Bridgestone tires on, and the torque marks on the rear axle show the tires have never been off. If you want one of these for your collection, this is your machine.

I’ll tell you right up front, It’s a pretty good bet that this is the most original, lowest mileage CBR900RR in the US. Others may say it, but this IS THE REAL DEAL. It’s in unbelievable condition on top of being graced with the highly desirable Erion Racing scheme of US Honda’s 90’s racing dynasty. It was a dream bike for me after having a 1995 new back in ’95, and just months later wishing I had waited a few months after they released the Erion scheme with the larger motor of the ’96.

Completely original and never molested! This is as close to the condition it left the factory in December 1995 as you may ever find in your life time. While others may glaze over their mileage, aftermarket exhausts or modifications, there will none of that. No tricks like professional studio type photos or 100+ hours of complete disassembly and detailing to make up for what it cant offer.

Having only 2,905 miles helps cut through the smoke and mirrors of elaborate photographic and detailing exercises. Zero incidents, no tip-overs, just an honest bike in unbelievable condition. No excuses…you WILL NOT find a nicer original bike than the one I am offering to you today.

You can know this bike has only seen 2,905 miles since it’s still on it’s original Bridgestone BT56 Battleaxe tires Honda installed in Japan when it was built in December 1995. Note the tire picture showing the 1995 date codes (9501 = first week of 1995) as well as it still having unbroken axle torque proof marks from when they were installed at the factory. While the tires are not something you would want to hit the road on, they go to the bikes authenticity so you can feel 100% confident this is a true survivor and the mileage is legitimate. If plan to collect and to store / display her, you are golden.

Other rarely seen items you may note in the photos of this gorgeous bike outside its obvious condition which speak to originality:

Essentially you are looking at a time capsule from the mid 90’s heyday of sportbikes when the CBR was king of hill. It turns heads today like it did over 20 years ago. I have been asked more than once if it’s new from those unfamiliar with the 900rr’s.

I’m the third owner and have had it for several years. All owners were older. Now that several years have past, health and age have changed, so I have to be honest that my original plan to have it forever is not realistic for my situation. As hard as it is, I hope someone else will enjoy the opportunity to get that dream CBR they’ve always wanted.

Disclaimers:
Please ask questions, and If you are local, feel free to set up a time to see her in person. It shows beautifully in the photos, though its nicer in person due to using a standard older camera. I hesitate to say mint as its so over used, but its pretty darn close. The only flaw I am aware of is a pinhead chip in in the small red decal on the front fairing and small scratch in the white ‘o’ decal that is part of the ‘Honda’ name on the bottom fairing. It comes with an original correct OEM Honda red upper decal should someone wanted to change it (few minutes). I did not in order to present it as authentically, but I bought it years ago just in case they ever stopped being available. The tank pad is a Honda original accessory applied by the dealer in 1996 at the request of the original buyer.

The bike may be offered locally, I reserve the right to terminate the auction for local sale.

 


The reserve has been met at $5,400, so this bike will sell. If the bidding stays anywhere near that price, this CBR will be a cheap, high-pedigree addition to someone’s collection.

Built by none other than legendary AMA team Erion Racing, for the purpose of AMA racing in 2007. To my mind this would be a perfect step up from your first track day bike with lots of room to grow. With racing quality parts the likes of HRC, Arata/Ladybird, Ohlins, and more, you have to say it would very difficult to duplicate for the $6969 asking price. 2007 Erion Honda CRB600RR $6969
This is the real deal, a 2007 Erion built/owned AMA Sportbike. This was a “A” bike in 2007 and a “B” bike in 2008. I still have the MSO in Erion’s name. This bike has hundreds of Pro hours put into the setup, it wasn’t built from a crashed bike in somebody’s basement, the longer you look at it the more cool stuff you find. She isn’t a spring chicken but still pulls most 600s on the straight with my fat ass. This bike was raced on and off by the past AMA/Expert level rider for a few years and I bought it last year for track days. I used it for 5 weekends, mostly instructing in the “I” group, I rode it but never really pushed it (I’m losing my MoJo). This bike is capable of 1:35s at VIR, I got down to 1:43s. This bike needs nothing to go fast, really fast, or if you are like me it was content to ride at a reasonable pace. Look around, you will see other bikes in this price range without the pedigree and HRC parts… which would you rather have.

Bike 1: 2001 Honda CBR929RR Erion Racing edition

Up for sale today is my baby!!! This is the first bike I ever owned, and it means a lot to me.

I dropped it 6 months ago, going about 20-30mph and ended up tearing my Achilles. So I am planning on getting something smaller, possibly a CBR600, but i haven’t decided yet. I prefer not sell this bike to a new rider I’m sorry! I learned to ride on 900+cc bikes, and it cost me. There is also a dent on the gas tank, that I have been meaning to pop out, but haven’t gotten around to it.

After I dropped the bike, I spent almost $1,500 getting it repaired at Erion Racing in the OC ($250 to get my valves checked). I probably could have had it fixed cheaper but I wanted it done by the BEST, and if ANYONE knows Fireblades, it’s those guys! If you don’t know who they are, look them up. The bike has 37,xxx and is mechanically FLAWLESS!!! I just had the Valves checked less than 1 thousand miles ago.

I have a new sprocket and chain on the bike, as well as an extra rear sprocket for more torque. I changed out the levers and pegs for CRG’s but I still have the Originals. Has a Toby Steering dampner, as well as a 2-up passenger bar. It also has a Power Commander II

I have both seats for it, one for a passenger, and a sportier hard one. Can’t remember if I forgot anything.

I am planning on replacing the rear tire, most likey with Michelin 2ct’s and replacing all the break pads. If you want me to replace them the price is $4,200. If you would like to change them yourself or you have a preference for rear tires and pads, the price is $3,600. The front tire is a Pirelli Diablo that is about 80%.

Pricing on this Erion edition is a BIN of $4,200 or best offer. That is not a lot of cash for something that you do not see every day. However with some rash damage (on both sides) and high mileage (37,000+), this is not exactly a bargain. Bike 2: 2001 Honda CBR929RR Erion Racing edition

This is a like new, showroom condition, limited edition 2001 CBR 929RR. This bike has been adult owned, stored in a heated garage and meticulously maintained. This is a very hard to find model that is perfectly tuned from the factory with a full system Erion exhaust system. Everything works flawlessly and it only has approximately 11K easy miles. I guarantee you will not find a bike as clean and perfect as this one! No disappointments. Clear title in hand and ready to go.

This second example looks to be significantly cleaner than the first, and there is no damage history noted. Mileage is listed in the 11k range, which is substantially lower than the previous bike. Not surprisingly, the price is also higher – but not as high as you might expect. This bike has a BIN of $4,700, and despite the higher price this appears to be the bargain between the two. We’ve been on a bit of an Italian hot streak as of the last few weeks and we’ve been called out in the comments on this post. Luckily I have been watching this Erion Racing edition CBR929RR myself on Craigslist and I think Roger will approve 😉 Amazingly clean and owned by two adult enthusiasts, this should fit the bill even if it was just a sticker job on a mass produced machine that was overshadowed by the R1. $5800 is a bit on the high side but there can’t be many left this nice.

(Cue the other half of RSBFS fans who don’t think survivors should be posted here either LOL!)

The only “flaw” (in my book) is that the previous owner cut off the factory “mudflap” just before the bottom of the license plate to clean up the look. I would have left it stock, but to each his own. I am in no hurry to sell so don’t waste time with ridiculous offers. Bike comes with an aftermarket $300 Sargent seat (in addition to the stock one).

A Few, Very Rare, Race Bikes For Sale; Ex Roberts & Aoki

These three authentic race bikes are very special in their historical value, for winning and for not!

First Up:

Bike:  1999 Honda CBR900RR Erion Racing; Ex Kurtis Roberts

Location:  California

Price:  POR

The seller, RMD Motors, is sparse on the details, but it should be obvious what you’re looking at being that this bike is said to be authentic.  They do state that the bike produces 200hp at the rear wheel, comes with nothing other than what is in the photos (Read: No spares)–but that does include Kurtis’ actual leathers.

The AMA Formula Xtreme series is intended for production bikes, with some, but not many, rules on what parts of the bike you can exchange for aftermarket parts.  The intent of Formula Xtreme is to allow as many types of motorcycles to compete, anything from inline-fours to air-cooled V-twins.  Formula Xtreme racing is usually one of the more competitive and entertaining races of an AMA weekend; Many veterans such as Eric Bostrom, Jake Zemke, Josh Hayes, Nicky Hayden and Kurtis Roberts among others have cut their teeth in Formula Xtreme.

Erion Racing has continued to be a prominent name in Honda AMA racing with even a special Erion Racing edition CBR929RR released for the U.S. market by the manufacturer.  For 1999, Erion Racing was the winner of the Formula Xtreme championship with another title in 2000.  I’m not adept on the Formula Xtreme rules for 1999, but it’s obvious looking at the bike what some of it’s features are:  Race bodywork with mounts, analog tach’,  race fuel tank, larger radiator, Erion SS/Carbon full exhaust system, aftermarket triple clamps, Ohlins forks & rear shock, Brembo calipers, Marchesini wheels and I’m sure much more that I didn’t notice!  This is a chance to own a fantastic looking, legitimate, race bike with a championship under it’s belt.  I’m unaware how many races this particular bike won, I’m not sure about the 900 designation as this should be a 919 or 929 based on the year, but you still have a serious piece of AMA history regardless and I’m sure RMD would be happy to answer your questions.

Bike:  2002 Kenny Roberts Proton KR3; Ex Nobuatsu Aoki

Location:  California

As you may know, 2002 was the last year for two-strokes in MotoGP.  Two-strokes had their last hurrah in 2001, but couldn’t overcome the 490cc deficit they had to the four-strokes in 2002 and were finally obsolete–How you may feel about this is up for debate.  Regardless, Proton KR racing had a respectable finish in the 2001 championship with Nobuatsu Aoki & Jeremy Mcwilliams finishing 12th & 14th in the championship, respectively.  The disadvantages for the privateer team of Proton KR were immense and they didn’t receive much help from their V-3 format.  The four cylinder bikes of 500gp had the most tractable power delivery–If it’s possible to say that for a GP two-stroke–while also having the most power.  As an example, the NSR500v was a V-Twin example of Honda’s factory NSR500 designed for privateers and had nowhere near the power of the factory bike.  The theory was that the two and three cylinder machines had a lower weight and could out corner the larger bikes, in practice the two and three cylinder bikes hadn’t a chance but on a wet course or a very tight one.  The Proton KR3 debuted in 1997 and was a joint venture between legendary racer Kenny Roberts and Malaysian giant Proton.  While they may not have won any championships, or come close–and as frustrating as I imagine it was for KR–I’m sure “King” Roberts enjoyed it, I know I would have!

This example looks to be in fantastic condition.  The seller states that this bike will run and comes with a small selection of spares.  As I’m sure you can imagine, it would be no small feat to run this bike anywhere, especially when consumables are accounted for.  However, if you have the funds, ask yourself:  How many times does a 2001 500GP bike come up for sale?

Lastly:

Bike:  2004 Kenny Roberts Proton KRV5 XM2; Ex Kurtis Roberts

Location:  California

Price:  POR (Rumor has it $300,000)

The Proton KR KRV5 debuted in 2002 with the adoption of four-strokes.  The V5 in KRv5 denotes that this bike has a 60deg V5 arrangement and a displacement of 990cc, putting out 200hp @ 15,000rpm.  The bodywork appears to be the latter iteration of the KRV5, which is consistent with the Valencia technical inspection sticker.  For 2004, Kurtis Roberts was only able to finish twice in France and Brazil with 15th and 19th, respectively.  The bike for sale here shows a technical inspection sticker for Valencia in 2004, however Roberts never started the GP at Valencia in 2004.

So, what are you getting for your money?  As things stand right now, you’ll get a fully functioning seven year old, privateer, MotoGP bike with a minimal spares package.  This bike currently doesn’t hold the value that any of the factory bikes would and shouldn’t for a long, long time.  However, none of those factory bikes are currently available–that I’m aware of–and you’ll probably be waiting a very long time for one to pop up if you don’t already know someone who has one.

So, all of these bikes look to be from the same seller/collection, but which one is the one to have if you can only choose one?  Obviously, the most expensive will always be one of the Proton KR bikes, with a large gap back to the CBR.  My money says that the 2002 Proton KR3 will always be the most valuable bike of the three; The most important influence being that it is one of the last two-stroke 500GP/MotoGP bikes to ever be produced–privateer or otherwise.  The 2004 KRV5 will always be a interim MotoGP bike and if the rules are again revised to allow 1000cc bikes, it won’t even have a displacement draw.  The CBR is a National Championship bike, even if it’s only in Formula Xtreme, and that kind of provenance doesn’t come everyday.

There are two kinds of collectors these bikes are for:  One who has a decent amount of money to spend on a collector bike, and someone who has obscene amounts of money for a collector bike.  The Proton’s are obviously the expensive bikes with the Erion CBR checking the affordable box.  Both of the MotoGP bikes have parts that you’re never going to be able to purchase from any retailer, and I’m sure the CBR has some good HRC bits on it too.  I wouldn’t be ashamed to have any of these three bikes, but I’d absolutely love to have a final year Grand Prix two-stroke.  If nothing else, spend a little time to enjoy the photos!
