The Ducati 851 is the father of modern Ducatis, from the world-changing 916 to the astonishing Panigale V4R. Without this boxy, lithe very red machine, those bikes would not be. The 851 arrived in 1987, with a very hopped up version of Ducati’s venerated Pantah engine. The air-cooled 90-degree, two-valve twin in the Pantah was updated with liquid cooling, four-valve heads and fuel injection for the 851, and Ducati shot back to the top of racing leaderboards.

Spitting out 93 horsepower and gobs of torque in a 430-pound chassis, the 851 was a statement that Ducati could use its agricultural engine tech to devastating effect. In 1990, the bike took home the World Superbike title, among a raft of other accolades over its five-year run.

This 1992 Ducati 851 Strada is from the last year before the 888 broke cover, and it has been kept largely unridden in a climate-controlled storage facility. Though it hasn’t crossed 3,000 miles since it was purchased as a leftover in 1995, all the major services have been done on a strict interval. Aside from the Fast by Feracci carbon cans, it is a stock machine.

This is a rare find, super low miles, Ducati 851 Superbike. This bike was purchased used from Bellevue Suzuki Ducati in 1995, at the time it was under 1000 miles on the clock. It has not seen much more use by its current owner as it was purchased to round out the collection of Ducati Superbikes, the 851/888/916. All three bikes have remained in owners collection until recently when he let the 888 go up for sale. Now we have been asked to find proper homes for the 851 and 916 still in his possession. Both the 851 and 916 have been kept serviced and stored in a heated shop/garage space. Run from time to time, oil changed and belts replaced at regular intervals. Other than the ever popular Fast by Ferracci carbon exhaust and a tank protector this beauty is all original. Ducati 851’s rarely come up for sale as it is, let alone one as clean as this one. Hurry, it will not last long. We have it scheduled for complete safety inspection and a 2-year service which will include oil, filter, hydraulics, coolant along with new timing belts. The owner has kindly provided some service records as well. It does have a clear WA title, all original keys and manuals included.

Based upon the 1978 Pantah bottom end, the design was the first real modern day Ducati Superbike and successfully bridged the gap until the arrival of the 916 some seven years later. The first sight of the all-new Ducati road bike was caught at the Milan show in the autumn of 1987 although the prototype race bikes had provided more than their fair share of clues and insights into what was waiting just around the corner. Developed as a direct descendant of the Daytona winning twin from 1987, the production version of the 851 differed little from that prototype race machine. Ducati’s intentions for the new model were clear from the outset being offered in both Strada (road going) and Kit (race track) specification, for those wishing to put their 851’s directly on to the track. 200 examples of the latter were hurriedly assembled to satisfy the homologation required for the inaugural 1988 World Superbike championship, a roadster based race series that Ducati were more than keen to be a part of.

The basis of the 1987 spec Ducati 851 lived on until the end of 1993, gradually growing in capacity up to the 888cc model of 1992, proving so dominant on the rack that the planned update, the iconic 916 series, was held over for more than a year finally making its debut towards the end of 93 ready for its full onslaught in 1994.

You’d be hard pressed to find another 1992 Ducati 851 in this kind of shape anywhere for any price. At $9,200, we have a low-mileage perfectly-preserved example of the superbike that put Ducati back in the conversation.

Featured Listing: 1995 Ducati 916

Some of the most collectible bikes at the moment have only recently come into their own. You see there is a direct link to a bike’s age and how hot it might be for collectors. Only the rarest of the rare bikes appreciate in value on the showroom floor; elements such as original public reaction, total number of units produced, in-country availability when originally released, current condition, age and mileage all complicate the formula. Nostalgia is a pretty reliable condition, and if all other criteria are met then you can bet somewhere between 20 and 25 years on a motorcycle that was hot when introduced and still in good condition will pique the interest of fans and collectors again. Such is the case with the Ducati 916 – a bombshell of a motorcycle if there ever was one. As potent and fast as it was beautiful and unapologetic, the 916 was more of an assault than a revolution. Accolades from the press followed – as did the WSBK trophies.

Introduced in 1994, the bikes imported into the US were officially 1995 model year units. And if launching a groundbreaking new model is not stressful enough for a small company, imagine if your Bologna-based manufacturing line caught fire and burned to the ground just as you were getting up and running. That is exactly what happened to Ducati – right as demand for their gorgeous new powerhouse was at its peak. Ducati was forced to set up a new temporary production line for the 916, basing it on the grounds of MV Agusta’s plant in Varese, Italy. Bikes from this production line – while technically identical to those of later production back at home in the Bologna factory – are interesting and rare artifacts and known as “Varese” bikes. How can you tell? The year is the first clue. The second is in the VIN number. If you look at the VIN, the character 11th from left (or 7th from right) is the manufacturing plant code. Most Ducatis have a “B” in this space, for Bologna. The early models built in the MV Agusta factory have a “V” for Varese.

It is estimated that approximately 2,663 Ducati 916s were assembled at the Varese factory, before full-scale production was renewed in Bologna. And while there is no technical difference in Varese bikes, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that these bikes received greater attention in that they were assembled more by hand as the production line in Varese was temporary. Regardless, Varese bikes are the most rare of the base model 916, and provides a further interesting story into this exotic and hyper twin.

This particular 916 Varese is a one owner machine, having traveled fewer than 2,300 miles in its 24 years of existence. It is being offered by well-known friend of RSBFS, Dave of Seattle’s Used Bikes. This example is not totally stock, yet many of the stock bits come with the sale, allowing collectors to return it back to original glory if desired. The Fast by Ferracci pipes are nearly a requisite change over stock, and with a fuel chip, rear sets and handlebar upgrade, this is a bike that is made for riding. The bike has been serviced throughout its life, and the seller is offering up a 2-year service to ensure that this bike is up to snuff for whatever lies ahead; be it straightaway, decreasing radius left hander, or just a parking place on a pedestal somewhere indoors with an audience. Six of one… 2007 Ducati 1098 S

Spring is in the air, and new life is emerging from once-frozen ground. Bikes which spent the winter indoors hibernating are emerging from their dens (or living rooms, garages or storage units) hungry for miles. Of all the mileage-hungry bikes we have seen thus far this year, I propose this 2007 Ducati 1098 S example as the most malnourished of the lot. Now, normally the “S” model does not warrant RSBFS attention; after all, we all like our “R” bikes better (like this one, for example). But sitting in “as new” condition with but SIX miles on the digital clocks, this 12 year old bike has only experienced a half mile for each year of its life! Condition warrants posting, even as some readers wonder why. RSBFS is a many and varied smorgasbord of interests – from static collections to knee dragging good times – and in striving to cater to all there will invariably be some dissent; everyone is welcome.

As we learned here, the Ducati 1098 was an evolution of the oft-maligned 999 series. Penned by a new designer who followed more closely in the footsteps of Massimo Tamburini, the 1098 is more directly related (in design language) to the 916 / 996 / 998 series of bikes. With a 100cc bump in displacement over the 999, the 1098cc motor (as opposed to the 1198cc motor in the 1098 R bike) produced a healthy 160 HP. The S model shares most of its DNA with the base 1098 offering, shaving approximately 5 pounds through the use of different wheels (shared with the R), and an upgrade to Ohlins bouncy bits (as opposed to Showa components on the base model). All in all, the S model was a potent weapon without the sticker shock of the race-bred R bike.

There is not a ton of information on today’s specimen; the seller has not said a lot, and there are fewer pictures than all of us would like. The pictures that do exist show a clean, stock 1098 S. No comments on how the bike was stored, if it was pickled (i.e. drained fuel or added stabilizer, cylinders fogged, etc). Any buyer intending to ride this beauty will undoubtedly need to recommission it with a service – it’s doubtful that the valves have gone out of spec in so few miles but the belts certainly will need to be changed. Tires, if original, will also be suspect for any real-world riding. But that’s probably not the point about this bike. The real point is condition versus age, and this one has a pretty impression ratio. Had it been an R bike – or something even more rare – I’m sure the reception would be much greater. This one is sitting on a $14,500 BIN – which is sure to light up the comments section with pricing concerns. But when you look at it, this is basically a new 1098 S going for the same price as a new 959 Panigale and WAY cheaper than any of the new V4 models. Last of the Big Twins: 2018 Ducati Panigale 1299R Final Edition

The 2018 Ducati Panigale 1299R Final Edition is the Italian way of quitting while you’re ahead. Have you developed the most-powerful twin-cylinder engine ever to be authorized for street use? Great! Number the top triple clamp, ’cause we’re only putting it in bikes for a year. But what a run of machines. The 1299R Final Edition managed to find 209 horsepower from two massive cylinders spinning at 11,000 RPM. The famed v-twin torque was at the party, too, with 104 lb-ft at 9,000 RPM.

In true Ducati style, the Final Edition was its own package; there were no options. You got full electronically-adjustable Ohlins suspension front and rear, a titanium Akrapovic exhaust system, yards and yards of carbon fiber, Brembo radial brakes, Pirelli Diablo Racing tires and Tricolore livery. If you thought the power figure was scary on its own, keep in mind this thing weighs 419 pounds with an almost full gas tank. Needless to say, the electronics are numerous and highly advanced.

As you can probably guess, this 2018 Ducati Panigale 1299R Final Edition is extremely low mileage, and has a short list of aftermarket goodies, all of which are easily reversed. It has had its 600-mile service and appears to be ready to ride.

Tricolore: 2008 Ducati Monster S4RS

The 2008 Ducati Monster S4RS was Bologna’s first in earnest attempt at a truly ludicrous hooligan machine, and an early salvo in what is now a full-blown war to build the scariest supernaked. These days, it’s not rare to see 150-odd horsepower stuffed into a trellis frame with upright bars, but back in ’08, the 120-horsepower S4RS pretty much stopped everyone in their tracks.

Here was a bike with the suspension and horsepower just shy of a club racer and a riding position closer to a Triumph Bonneville than a 1098. Oh, and a healthy enthusiasm for pointing the front wheel at the heavens. The Ohlins suspension, gorgeous trellis frame and the love-it-or-hate-it Italian flag paint left absolutely nothing to the imagination about this thing’s intentions.

This 2008 Ducati Monster S4RS Tricolore is one of 400 in this paint scheme, and is claimed to be exactly as it left the factory. It has seen just 7,000 miles, and appears to be pretty much spotless. That’s not small feat, given that the Monster is all nooks and crannies where dirt can gather covered by the barest minimum of bodywork.

When Pierre Terblanche took over the Ducati styling reins from Massimo Tamburini he had very big shoes to fill. For years the 916 / 996 / 998 series captured the hearts, minds and wallets of riders everywhere. In retrospect, the reception of the 999 (pronounced “ugly”) and the short span of three years availability was a pretty big clue to the powers that be that the new design language wasn’t cutting the showroom mustard. Enter Giandrea Fabbro, chosen to pen the successor Ducati Superbike – the 1098. Evoking elements from the 916 line – including the glorious single-sided swing arm – yet in a modern day form, Fabbro created an update to the iconic silhouette and evolved the Ducati Superbike for the next series of models.

But the 1098 didn’t just turn heads in the magazines and dealership showrooms. You see, part of the reason for the 1098 was WSBK racing. Ducati was already at the limit of their performance technology in World Superbike with the 999cc limit for twins. The next step to get on par with the might of the Japanese was more displacement. Ducati decided to buck the rules and evolved the 999 mill to just under 1100cc, thereby petitioning the sanctioning body to change the rules. A standoff ensued, and no side wanted to give. Ducati – a key mainstay of WSBK – threatened to boycott the series. Eventually, the sanctioning body came to an understanding with all of the players in the series: the maximum displacement for twins was raised to 1200cc, but concessions were introduced to maintain parity among the manufacturers. Thus, the Ducati 1098 was allowed to enter the 2007 WSBK series.

Despite the return of classic good looks, the Ducati 1098 introduction was not all smooth sailing. Initial tests indicated that the 999 was actually the easier bike to ride fast; the 1098 was more sensitive to setup. But the 1098 was definitely successful at the racetrack, winning the 2008 WSBK series championship. The 1098R model, as we see here, follows the unique formula that makes Ducati “R” bikes so special. Sure, it has more carbon fiber and better, more adjustable suspension. But the real trick with Ducati R bikes is in the engine, where there is more. More engine, that is. You see, the Ducati 1098 R actually displaces 1198cc, built right up to the (new) limits for Superbike racing. With 180 HP on tap in stock form, the 1098 R was the most potent twin cylinder sport bike available at the time, and had an equally impressive price tag.

Today’s example is a 2008 model, and appears to be very well cared for. From the pictures it is obvious the owner is a Duc fan, as there is also a 999R in some of the photos. Ducatis are lonely machines, so it is nice that this one had some company. With only 3,353 miles there is not much that should be wrong here. The Power Commander is a popular fueling mod that can help throttle response and gain back some HP that was donated to those evil folks from the EPA. The clutch cover is practically a mandated aftermarket necessity. Otherwise all looks to be in order. No mention of a service, belts or valve adjustment, so interested buyers might want to ask some questions. Check it out here. In 1994 Ducati unleashed the equivalent of a nuclear weapon in the face of a sport bike field full of conventional weaponry. That year Ducati introduced the legendary 916 – and commenced an enviable run of WSBK world titles (four within a five-year span). Simultaneously offering a quantum leap in twin-cylinder performance (horsepower, rev limits, packaging), the 916 was also stunningly beautiful. Even today the lines on a 916 are distinctive and striking. From the twin narrow headlights, to the high mounted exhaust cans, to the single sided swing arm with endurance-styled quick-change rear wheel, to the straight-sectioned chrome-moly chassis, nearly everything on the 916 forced us to rethink what we knew about how motorcycles were designed and how they performed.

The original 916 spanned from 1994 through 1998 – eventually making way for the 996, and ultimately the 998. But even in the first generation of this model, Ducati spared little expense on components. The 916 was a fair sight more expensive than contemporary Japanese machines, making it more exclusive. But far from a glittering farkle with no real purpose, the glory of the 916 was that it worked. It worked for all of the moto magazine editors and testers. It worked at the racetrack. And thanks to its good looks, it worked on the showroom as well. Ducati created a massive following with the 916 as designer Massimo Tamburini played off speed and style like his own personal yin and yang. To say it was a winner is stating the obvious… after it already happened.

Today the 916 is not quite the performance explosion it was 25 years ago; time, after all, will catch up with all of us. But there is no denying that it stands strong and proud despite the time that has passed. There is no embarrassment when showing up on a 916 – whether it is a local bike nite event, a weekend canyon ride, or even a track day with your buddies. The 916 looks great, pulls strong and handles well. You just need to remember that this WAS cutting edge during its time – but technology inexorably creeps forward. Take the brakes, for example. The 916 shipped with top-shelf Brembo calipers clamping down on huge disks. But modern riders won’t confuse them for monoblock calipers and radial master cylinders. Nor will the 114 horsepower astound a modern liter bike rider. Again, it was more than adequate in the day, but by today’s numbers is not truly remarkable. But even today few motorcycles have represented the total package of looks, performance and commercial success.

Today’s example is a clean 1998 model (last year of the original 916 run). It has but 7,700 miles on the clock, which equates to fewer than 400 miles a year. There are a few add ons that I can see – the Termis and ubiquitous open clutch cover are but two – but nothing appears to have been hacked or unconditionally changed. I could do without the stickers, but those can be non-destructively removed. The seller even refers to a recent maintenance (a four-valve desmo adjustment is not an insignificant task when replacing shims), although there is no mention of when the belts were last changed. Still, this is a good looking specimen of a fantastic motorcycle. The 916 is a collectible motorcycle, and prices are on the rise. The earliest, cleanest and rarest examples of the 916 have risen most quickly, but even the base model is growing in value. This one has an opening ask of $7,999, with reserve in place. The ad text states an $8,500 asking price, so it looks like the reserve might be set close to the opening ask. Check it out here, and Good Luck!!

Small Batch: 1989 Ducati 750 F1 Laguna Seca

Behold the mighty Ducati F1 special edition “Laguna Seca.” Essentially a factory hot rod based on the F1 (a 750cc version of the Tourist Trophy), the Laguna Seca shared a special tier with the two other limited edition models, the Santamonica and the Montjuich. All of the special models were named after race tracks where a Ducati rider pulled a first place rabbit out of a hat. In this case, it was Marco “Lucky” Lucchinelli prevailing at the 1986 Battle of the Twins (BOTT) event at the famed California track. The Laguna Seca was closest to the Montjuich in spec, the differences being largely related to the intended target audience: North America. As such, changes were basically limited to emissions and noise controls. The rest is pure 1980s Ducati goodness; rough and ready, light and lean. The seller has written (or copied?) a good story of the Laguna Seca (and the F1 model in general), so I will let him pick up the tale:

Considered by many enthusiasts to be the last of the ‘real’ Ducatis, the race-styled 750 F1 first appeared in 1985. Ducati had already enjoyed considerable success with its Pantah-derived F2 racers in FIM Formula 2 racing – Tony Rutter winning the championship four-times running between 1981 and 1984 – so a ‘750’ version was the logical next step.

First seen in prototype form in endurance races in 1983, the F1’s 748cc engine was the latest in a long line of stretches applied to the original 500c ‘belt drive’ Desmo unit that had first appeared in the Pantah in 1979 – a street-legal updated version of the mid-’80s TT1. A markedly over-square design of 88×61.5mm bore/stroke, the F1 engine produced around 60bhp and functioned as a stressed element within the frame, the swinging arm pivoting in the rear of the gearbox. Clearly visible above the deliberately cut away fairing sides, the aforementioned frame attracted almost as much attention as the engine: a trellis of short, straight tubes, it has formed the basis of every road-going Ducati since, as well as the first Desmosedici Moto GP racers. In the fashion of the day, the F1 came with a 16-inch front wheel, while braking power was provided by state-of-the-art triple Brembos. The stock F1 was complemented by a series of hand-built, limited edition, race replicas – Montjuich, Santamonica and Laguna Seca – the last inspired by Marco “Lucky” Lucchinelli’s famous ‘Battle of the Twins’ race victory at Daytona in 1986. Today the evocatively named F1 and its derivatives are highly prized by Ducati collectors.

Much like the Montjuich, the Laguna Seca came with bigger Dell’Orto carburetors, higher compression ratio, bigger valves, and straight-cut primary drive gears. And talk of 95bhp at 10,000rpm! But unlike the Montjuich, it came with a larger, quieter muffler.

There were some small changes between the two bikes, namely in the Laguna’s parts from the new Paso. The delta-spoked one-piece 16-inch Oscam wheels and the brake discs, but not the four-piston ‘racing’ Brembo front calipers, came from the 750 Paso, as did the wider front fender. Other changes included a ‘Lucky’ signature steel gas tank, revised foot peg bracketry and a plastic rear sub-fender attached to the swing arm. Most Laguna Secas came with a solo seat and were built in limited numbers (perhaps as few as 296.)

Not a lot of history about this particular example, although the read is a good one (reminds me of Ian Faloon). The only point of note I see on this bike is the non-standard Ohlins external shock reservoir strapped to the left side of the iconic trestle frame chassis (original shock was a Marzocchi PVS 4). Any other changes are unknown with the facts given, and with only 3 pictures to work with there are many questions left unanswered. But with only 6,500 miles, this beauty is undoubtedly clean and very rare. I’m not sure if proper etiquette deems we refer to this as the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, nee Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, nee Laguna Seca Raceway, but the connection is very clear. Also clear is the asking price: a not insignificant $24,900. That is a bit higher than we usually see these bikes offered – although the seller appears open to a lesser figure – so if you’re in the market for one of these beautiful and rare model Pantahs you should act quickly.
