Ducati upped the ante with the superbike-engined Monster S4, and then raised the stakes with a commemorative for a very winning WSBK champion in 2002. Today’s Foggy is number 076 of just 300, and about as pristine as they come.

Like its namesake, the Foggy edition is a bit of a renegade, with 916 power tailored to the un-faired machine with cams and ECU for a wider torque band. Components are up at the superbike level, with fully adjustable suspension, 320mm Brembo brakes and light-looking Marchesini wheels. Almost more than an actual fairing, enough carbon has been captured to provide a chin scoop, side covers, radiator shroud, cam belt covers, exhaust shields, and more. Championship bling includes two #1 X 4 signature emblems and your own set of Foggy angry eyes.

The desmoquattro engine benefits from the naked’s open airflow, with overheating mostly extinguished compared to the 916. A slight higher rear ride height and revised rear suspension accompanied the S4 engine, with ST4S shock linkage help keep control under power. Hard to say whether a special edition in this condition will get its oil changes by the odometer or the calendar, but the original tires should be saved when new ones are fitted. A bunch of Monster for the buy-it-now of $11,275.

The Foggy edition came after a crash aboard Fogarty’s Honda MotoGP ride at Philip Island, Australia necessitated his early retirement from the circuit. A fitting tribute to the rider who brought four superbike championships to Ducati – super rare, lightly used and nicely preserved for the next fan.
