Straight from BaT
This 1984 Kawasaki GPz550 is said to have spent over three decades in storage with two previous owners in New York before the seller’s 2025 acquisition, and it now shows 3,900 miles. Powered by an air-cooled 553cc DOHC inline-four paired with a six-speed transmission, the motorcycle is finished in Firecracker Red with black Kawasaki lettering in addition to silver, gray, and blue stripes. It also features an oil cooler, an electric starter, electronic ignition, a black chrome-finished four-into-two exhaust system, an air-assisted anti-dive fork, a monoshock, an aluminum swingarm, triple disc brakes, split three-spoke 18″ wheels, a two-up seat, a rear grab bar, folding passenger foot pegs, a half fairing with a clear windscreen, and both center and side stands. Work in March 2024 reportedly included flushing the brake fluid, changing the fork oil and brake pads, cleaning and synchronizing the four TK carburetors, and replacing the tires. This ZX550-A1 is offered at no reserve with factory literature, two keys, and an Oklahoma title in the seller’s name.
SELLER
This 1984 Kawasaki GPz550 was purchased in May of 2025 from the previous owner who purchased it in March of 2024 from the original owner in Staten Island, NY. It had been in garage storage for many years, having last been registered and ridden in 1988.
The 1984 GPz550 from Kawasaki was an upgrade from the earlier models and is fitted with a Uni-Trak mono shock rear suspension, a larger more streamlined fairing and a horsepower boost to 65 BHP, up from the previous generation 57 BHP. The air-cooled 553cc motor connects to a six speed transmission and it came stock with an air adjustable fork, antidive braking system, electronic ignition, triple disc brakes and a very nice 4 into 2 exhaust.
The motorcycle is finished in Kawasaki Firecracker Red, with Silver and Blue accent decals. It came equipped with three spoke tubeless alloy mag wheels, center and side stands, hazard flashers, fuel gauge and a two up seat with passenger pegs.
This 1984 GPz550 is a time capsule of the 1980s sport bike wars. It is in excellent running and riding shape, with very few flaws. The original exhaust is in excellent shape and the controls are original. It rides and handles as it did when it was new, and it could be taken and used without worry by any new owner who has a desire for a classic midsized sport bike of the day.
It even sports the original license plate frame from Staten Island Kawasaki, along with the original owners manual and tool kit. It was previously ridden at a Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club Rally where it garnered significant attention and several offers. Reluctantly, recent medical issues see a need for the current owner to sell this pristine example.
Let the good times roll!
This was a dream machine back in ’84. One of Red’s friends crashed an ’84 GPz550 back in the day, making this survivor that much more valuable. Did you see that it only has 3,900 miles!?!?!?!
The GPz550 was one of the best all-around sportbikes of the early ’80s—lightweight, quick-revving, and surprisingly sharp in the corners for its time. Kawasaki called it a “middleweight,” but it punched way above its weight class back then.
If you’ve been looking for a vintage sportbike, this is a great option. It turned heads in ’84 and it turns heads today. Ride it, collect it, or just park it and stare. Either way, the GPz still holds up.
