Milan to Miami: 1982 Moto Morini 500 Strada

A bit off the beaten path and genuinely rare in the United States, this is a beautifully preserved Moto Morini 500. While not in the same performance league as the Ducati superbikes (or even Super Sports), and not in the high-speed transport business as Moto Guzzi, the other, other Italian V-Twin marque produced interesting – if not sporty – scoots predominantly in the 350cc and 500cc varieties. Built in low numbers overall, few were imported into North America – making this very clean 500 Strada (Italian for “street”) a rare gem to be admired and enjoyed. The seller has a lot of information about the marque and the bike, and I will let him pick up the story here:

Extremely original, low-milage machine. The finish does have it’s imperfections, and a light patina that reminds you that this is truly a 40 year old classic. The inside of the gas tank was professionally sealed, and looks great inside. The original La Franconi pipes are in great shape, with no holes. The Marzocchi suspension still feels nice and firm. The 500 was an obvious early manifestation of the Morini modular concept, using a larger bore and stroke to up the capacity of the original 344cc engine to 478ccs, producing more power and a relaxed ride. The longer wheelbase (the result of an elongated swing arm) gave a stable ride, and the longer seat suited two up riding.

The machine was first shown in prototype form at Milan in November 1975, started production in 1977 and was imported in to the UK from 1978. Originally the machine was produced with a 5 speed gearbox, allegedly due to concerns over the original box being unable to cope with the extra power. However, from 1981 a six speed cluster was fitted, resulting in the ”Sei-V” model, which also saw the introduction of a plastic chain guard, painted mud guards and mechanical rev counter, all designed to reduce production costs. Prior to this a Sport version had been offered which, unlike the 3½ was produced purely through changes to handlebars and footrests plus the appropriate badge!

The 500 was an excellent machine for the longer distance rider (journalist Dave Minton rode one from Alaska to Mexico down the Trans-American Highway in the 1980s) but lacked some of the rider appeal of the 350s. The engine continued to be developed, and the later 501 motor (actually 507cc) was arguably the best of the ”air-cooled” twins, revving freely and used in later off road machines together with the custom bikes that saw out Morini production at the old factory in the early 1990s following the take-over by Cagiva.

This model is the most original, low-milage example I could possibly find. It has been living in our climate-controlled museum in downtown West Palm Beach since I acquired it. With only 1,520 ORIGINAL MILES, and the ORIGINAL MSO certificate, this is a survivor-quality machine.

The electric start still works (although they we known for being less-than-great), and fitted with a brand new battery. The charging system has been tested and works great. The brakes operate flawlessly, thank to the rebuilt brake hydraulics. The Pirelli Sport Demon tires are like new, only fitted a couple hundred miles ago.

The original La Franconi pipes are in great shape, with no holes. The Marzocchi suspension still feels nice and firm. All of the paint on this fabulous example is 100% original. The finish does have it’s nicks, scratches, and overall patina that remind you that this is truly a survivor. The inside of the gas tank was professionally sealed, and looks great.

Despite many ups and downs, the Moto Morini brand prevails – today it calls the Chinese motorcycle and bicycle manufacturer Zhongneng Vehicle Group (Znen) as home. This is a brand that has come a long way over an extended period of years, endured the Second World War, rebuilt and produced some memorable competitive and street models. The 3 1/2 and 500 twins must surely be listed up there as iconic models of Italian style, even though they may lack the sharp edge of the more sporting models from other Italian companies. This beautiful 1982 Moto Morini 500 has only 1,500 miles on the clocks, and looks as good as any unrestored example we have seen. Officially A Triple: 1992 Ducati 851

In the highly unlikely case that RSBFS readers are not aware, the Ducati 851 is a mere twin, not a triple. However in the “when it rains it pours” environment of rare motorcycles, today’s 1992 Ducati 851 is the third low mileage Strada we have seen (see HERE and HERE). This is certainly the feast part of “feast or famine” and means that if you are in the market for one of these iconic machines, then you have a surprising choice of available examples.

As oft recounted on these pages and elsewhere, the Ducati 851 was a triple threat of liquid cooling, four valve desmo heads and fuel injection. The result was a powerplant that paved the way to the legendary 916, and progressed Ducati further along winning ways at the racetrack. With 110HP above 9,000 RPM, the new 851 could rev like no other twin. And with Brembo brakes and Showa suspension connected to Bolgna’s best trellis frame to date, the 851 could handle like no other as well. The Strada was the the lowest spec 851 made available, yet was head and shoulders above anything Ducati had released to date.

Today’s example is a Strada – meaning the bi-posto or two-seater example. The seat cover removes via the ignition key, and passenger grab handles deploy from beneath. In all, a very trick setup for two-up riding on an otherwise solo looking tail section. The pipes are upswept in order to facilitate ground clearance, and it is unlikely you will be touching down hard parts unless shod with race rubber and in possession of superhuman talent.

With a claimed mere 1,601 miles on the triple Veglia white-faced gauge cluster, this is one of the cleanest, most stock examples of the 851 we have seen on these pages. It appears to be about as perfect as one could hope, and promises the next own a riding experience as if it was purchased new off of the showroom floor. The opening ask for this auction is $9,000. And while that is a fair amount of cash to start an auction, it is most certainly in line with the low end of what this bike is worth. That tells me that this isn’t a low dollar click bait to get people to bid, but rather a straightforward approach to selling the bike. If not for the Fast By Ferracci sticker on this 1992 Ducati 851, you might believe that this is the bike we posted just earlier this week (see here). But no, it is definitely 851 season here on RSBFS, and I’m pretty happy about that! After all, the 851 is the model that really supercharged Ducati’s ride up the competitive – and consumer – ladder being their first liquid cooled engine, their first 4-valve desmo head, and their first use of fuel injection. And while that might sound like throwing technology and parts at a bike, these pieces integrated so well as to make for a stunner of a runner that also looks great just standing still. The seller has a lot to say, so I will let him pick up the story here.

This 1992 Ducati 851 is a Strada (two seater) edition. It looks to be fairly stock, with the exception of FBF carbon cans (a wonderful, non-destructive mod), a tinted windscreen and lots of signatures and stickers. The seller doesn’t note who actually signed the bike, but some close up viewing and some research nets the John Hancocks of none other than Canadia Pascal Picotte, and Aussie – and 1994 AMA Superbike champ – Troy Corser. There are other names scribbled on the fairing, and I invite sharp-eyed readers to help with the identification.

This particular 851 has been sitting for a long time, which resulted in some very low miles – just 2,577 according to the seller. Thankfully the bike has been gone through, which should remove worry regarding belts, valves, coolant and the like. It is uncertain how much value can be attributed to the signatures, however the rest of the bike appears to be in decent shape for the age. There is no doubt that the 851 is a model that is increasing in valuation, but it remains to be seen if there are any takers of the $18,000 opening ask (with a $21k BIN). Turn the world on its ear – 1992 Ducati 851

Ducati has quite the history of producing iconic, revolutionary models that were really large leaps in evolution. From the 1970s and the 750 SS with its stunning use of desmodromic valve actuation via a bevel drive arrangement, to the Pantah-engined bikes of the early 1980s with a new toothed rubber belt (which nobody thought would last), to the 851 of the late ’80s and early 90s. Each brought with it great steps in terms of design and efficiency, and each was a milestone in its own right. And each contributed to the rich racing heritage that surrounds the Ducati legend. Today we find a pristine 1992 851 Strada – a bike right before the cusp of the 888 refresh – that should tick all the boxes for anyone looking for one of these astounding beasts.

The magic of the 851 was a 1-2-3 abracadabra affair. Up to this point, all racing (and street going) bikes of the Bologna brand had the same basic engine characteristics: air cooling, two valve heads, and carbs. Ducati engineering (as funded by new owners, Cagiva) implemented Massimo Bordi’s university thesis of a 4-valve desmodromic head. The effort was aided by noted cylinder head specialist Cosworth, but retained Bordi’s basic design. The new head was affixed to an all new block which included liquid cooled cylinders to allow for tighter tolerances and more sustained high power and high RPM running. Fueling was provided by an all-new (and novel for the time) fuel injection system developed by Weber. The result was 110 HP at 9,500 RPM – figures unachievable by the earlier technology.

Selling my 1992 Ducati 851 Superbike. You don’t see them like this very often anymore. Almost 100% stock with the exception of Sil Moto 50mm full race exhaust, Ferracci chip and K&N filter. Everything else is there and stock. OEM Stickers on Mirrors!! Original Cagiva windscreen as well. Took kit included, and all fluids and belts were done last week prior to listing. Tires are new with nubs still on tires and zero miles on them. Starts up if you just look at the start button. Only ethanol free gas used and has been in my collection for many years. Needs nothing, and is ready to ride or put in your office. Stand, owners manual and Ducati soft indoor cover comes with sale. I reserve the right to pull listing should I sell it locally, but feel as though this will get proper exposure. No disappointments with this bike. For a next-generation Superbike – one that was very successfully campaigned in WSBK – the 851 Strada is actually a pretty sensible motorcycle suitable for daily use. The cockpit is tidy and comfortable, if not a little cramped for bigger riders. The stretch to the clip-ons is modest, and the fuel injection ensures easy starts and idling. These models ride relatively easily in traffic, and even have a hidden passenger pillion, pegs and grab handles that emerge from under the seat – perfect for those two-up encounters! Maintenance is a little more involved than your average Japanese sewing machine, in that belts require regular replacement and valve adjustment is a bit more of a chore. If you can live with that, then the 851 is a bike that can fit into your life – and bring some raucous excitement to it as well.

today’s 1992 Ducati 851 example looks to be clean, clean, clean. It is an extremely low miles specimen, and appears to be in fully stock condition save for the beautiful carbon cans (I would guess that those things really give that desmoquattro a deep, biting sound) and the requisite upstream enhancements. The internets seem to agree with the assessment of this one, as the price is getting up there: a hair under $10k as of this writing, and the reserve still in place. It is not often that we see such a great example of this model, and with vaccinations and spring all showing up it would appear that the world wants to ride. Zero-Mile 1988 Ducati 851 Tricolore for Sale

The introduction of the 851 in 1987 was a watershed moment for Ducati. Their first liquid-cooled, four-valve engine displaced, naturally, 851cc and established a superbike formula that the company would follow until the introduction of their V4. The 851 didn’t need to rely on nostalgia to compete at the highest levels of racing and re-established Ducati as an object of lust among sportbike enthusiasts. The revised v-twin couldn’t generate the outright power of the inline fours produced by the Japanese manufacturers, but this Kit 851 Tricolore weighed in at around 363lbs dry and brought Ducati’s famed handling to the party, along with a fat wedge of midrange torque.

As is typical for Ducati, there were a couple different versions of the 851 available, a Strada or “street” version with 102hp, and the much higher specification Kit or Corsa version as seen here. With a claimed 120hp, the Kit bikes were intended to homologate the 851 for competition and were extremely rare, with just enough built to qualify them to race. At a glance, the two versions look almost identical but, as they say: the devil is in the details. The Kit version had a braced swingarm, close-ratio gearbox, race camshafts and ECU, magnesium wheels, and a number of other detail changes, including a dash with no speedometer. Because racebike.

1988 Ducati Superbike Kit Tri Color Racer. Number 34 of 250. 250 per Homologation rules for World Superbike. Never been started since it was uncrated. The only tire wear is from factory shakedown. Absolutely in perfect (new) condition!

The $89,500 asking price is eye-wateringly high but, with 250 built and only 20 imported to the US, there can’t be that many 0-mile 851 Kits out there. If that’s your thing, I’m sure you’re prepared to spend outrageous sums for time-capsule Bolognese homologation specials like this one. The rest of us will just have to grouse in the comments about ridiculous asking prices…

The Ducati 851 is one of the all time greats; a watershed bike that defined a company, dominated a racing class, and lives on as a lust-worthy dance partner in the canyons. Everything about it screams “Ducati” from the miles of blood-red paint to the big, booming exhaust note that only a 90 degree v-twin can produce. The design silhouette is distinctive – and sexy. This is an Italian exotic at its finest, and at its most collectible. And yet this is a bike that you can buy without mortgaging your house, and you can live with day to day.

What makes the 851 such a big deal is the manner in which it burst onto the scene. Ducati leapfrogged the evolutionary process by simultaneously moving the Pantah-based platform from air cooling to liquid cooling, from a two-valve desmo head to a four-valve arrangement, and switching from carbs to fuel injection. That is a lot to pull off in one fell swoop, but given the performance, reliability and longevity of these motors it is obvious that Ducati cut no corners. As a result the 851 is a great choice if you are looking for a collector that you can ride. It makes usable power (but not outrageous amounts), offers strong brakes and willing suspension, and a decently upright riding position.

This model 851 was only made for two years and only 1200 were produced. This is a two owner bike with the rare Euro tail section added. The original BiPosto seat is included with the sale of the bike.

The Ducati 851 was the successor to the air-cooled two-valve Ducati 750 F1. After buying Ducati, Cagiva invested in the development of anotherV-Twin, but with liquid cooling, and four-valve Desmdromic heads. Based on the Pantah motor, but with liquid cooling, fuel injection, and desmodromic four valve heads (with an included valve angle of 40°), the 851 made Ducati once again competitive in motorcycle racing.

Bordi collaborated with Cosworth to develop the heads, but in the time they had, they were only able to reduce the included valve angle of the desmodromic engine to 40°, while less than 30° was possible with valve springs. Ducati stuck with the desmodromics. The subsequent 851 road bike had stronger crankcases, while the heads and valves remained the same; designed to fit above the 88 mm bore of a 748 cc version.

This particular 851 is a Strada (street) model, but has been uprated with a carbon front fender, carbon mud guard, a sweet Fast by Ferracci high-sweep carbon exhaust (sounds so good!), and a solo section tail. In other words, this particular model is well-suited as a rider. The asking price is right in the ball park for a clean and cared-for example. That is the interesting thing about these models; while the SP4 and LTD models have higher resale value, clean base model Stradas continues to trade strongly. This is a testament to how great these bikes are to ride and own (author confession: my wife rides one as her commuter). If you are of a certain age and into sport bikes from the 1980s and 1990s, the Ducati 851 has to be a standout. Bred for World Superbike racing, the 851 (and the 888 and 916 that followed) proved the performance of a well-engineered twin – even against the Japanese multis. With liquid cooling, fuel injection and revolutionary 4-valve heads operated via desmo, the 851 rev’ed impossibly fast and high for a twin. With a narrow waist, light weight and aerodynamic bodywork, the 851 took the fight to the conventional fours… and won.

Today’s example is a 1991 851 Strada – or “street” version. This is the base model of the 851, and includes features such as a passenger pillion, passenger pegs and hidden grab rails that fold out from under the seat. In stock form the exhaust cans sit relatively low to accommodate passenger legs, and the pillion is otherwise covered by color-coded bodywork. When fully assembled, the tail looks like a solo unit. Components are as you might expect: Suspension by Showa, braking by Brembo. Horsepower is in the 95 HP range stock, making peak power at about 9,500 RPM.

There is a note on the title stating mileage has exceeded mechanical limits,which is an error from the title office application form,they inform me it can not be removed.If this is an issue please bid on someone elses bike.

This particular example has some tasty mods. The Gia.Co.Mo carbon cans are lightweight and sound marvelous – however the high placement pretty much eliminates the passenger pegs. The FI chip is necessary to tune the bike to the new exhaust, and generally wake up throttle response. The other bits are what you might expect a bike of this age to accumulate over time; some performance parts, and some maintenance items. The rear pillion cover is missing, and the plastic over the taillight should be red, not black. But otherwise this looks to be complete. Thumbs up for all of the service details, as that is a critical element to these bikes. I’m not familiar with upgrading the oil cooler to something later/larger, but these engines do utilize oil as a cooling medium in addition to being water cooled, so there may be a performance gain. Not sure what to make of the odo reading on the title; that might take some investigation. Lots of people watching this one, but with the price way down in the $3,500 range at time of writing (reserve in place), this one still has some runway. Walks like a Duck: 1991 Ducati 851 Strada

Ducati is responsible for some of the most iconic motorcycles in the world. They are also purveyors of more marketing ploys than any other manufacturer, as evidenced by the endless parade of Limited Edition models. Therefore, words like “special” and “rare” are used so often as to appear meaningless. But limited numbers aside, Ducati has made some revolutionary leaps along its long history, cementing their place in motorcycling history with truly milestone machines. Not content to simply evolve one step at a time, at certain points in history Ducati doubled down on a new idea, catapulting forward along the performance curve. The introduction of the 851 was just such a moment. Today’s bike, a 1991 851 Strada, is a good example of that revolution.

If you think about the major technological jumps prior to the late 1980s, Ducati went from being a small bore, single cylinder manufacturer to producing twins. The L-twin configuration evolved over time, but was invariably a small step forward along the same route. The introduction of the Pantah could be seen as a leap, but in reality that move was more towards efficient production than outright performance. The Pantah was essentially the same air-cooled, two valve desmo twin as the bevel drive that came before, with only mild steps in go-power. With the 851, however, Ducati turned their own ideas of performance on its head. Simultaneously introducing liquid cooling, fuel injection AND a four valve, desmo actuated head, the 851 was a massive step forward from a technology perspective and performance. Did it work? Raymond Roche, participating in World SBK, took 3rd overall in 1989, was champion in 1990 and came in second in the two years to follow.

Plus, brakes have been flushed and radiator has been flushed. Left and right fairings have been painted.

Also I chose the very rare, period correct carbon Termignoni high mount exhaust and they sound beautiful. There is also a header modification, see pics. Other special parts included are rear Ohlins shock with remote adjuster. Ohlins steering damper.
Included with the bike are the original mufflers, passenger footpegs, owner’s manual, one key and original windscreen.

Like many Ducatis, the 851 was released in a few different flavors. What you see here – the Strada or street edition – was the base model. This is not a homologation bike, although the basic platform is the same to the SP series. The Strada was the most streetable, complete with a passenger pillion hiding under the color coded tail cover, and nifty passenger grab handles that pivot out from beneath the seat. 1991 and 1992 were the last years of the 851 – the 1992 SP versions of this model actually contained a 888 motor, although the Strada remained an 851. But this speaks to the robustness and longevity of the basic mill, as even the 888 eventually became a 916 while still being badged as an 888. This is a milestone bike for Ducati, and the platform that won SBK victories and birthed the 888 and legendary 916.

Today’s 851 Strada example looks to be in great shape – with wonderful photos. Mileage is reasonable considering you are looking at a 27 year old performance bike. There are a few added farkles in the manner of tinted windscreen and carbon bits, and the high-mount carbon Termis which look great. They interfere with the passenger pegs, however, so those have been removed (but are available with the sale). The Ohlins upgrades are choice, to be sure. The add ons and upgrades do not cause concern. The seller notes that both sides of the fairing have been painted – with no comment as to why. It may have been simply cosmetic, as there is no real evidence of the bike being down. Either way, it looks great in the pictures, appears to be very clean and cared for, and with those Termi cans I’m sure it sounds incredible. A big plus is that all services have been recently completed.

Well-preserved 851 examples have held up in value reasonably well. This was a watershed bike for Ducati, and it continues to be a sought-after model. This particular bike sits below $6k at time of writing, with reserve not met. No telling how high the reserve is set, but I would estimate somewhere around $7-8k would be in the money. We have definitely seen these cross the auction block for less, but the market can be a funny thing. Just check out some of the comments on the more rare examples of Ducati exotica featured in the pages of RSBFS to read comments such as “I remember when you could pick up one of those for just $xxx…” Check out the auction here, as this bike is currently a bargain.
