If you are of a certain age and into sport bikes from the 1980s and 1990s, the Ducati 851 has to be a standout. Bred for World Superbike racing, the 851 (and the 888 and 916 that followed) proved the performance of a well-engineered twin – even against the Japanese multis. With liquid cooling, fuel injection and revolutionary 4-valve heads operated via desmo, the 851 rev’ed impossibly fast and high for a twin. With a narrow waist, light weight and aerodynamic bodywork, the 851 took the fight to the conventional fours… and won.

Today’s example is a 1991 851 Strada – or “street” version. This is the base model of the 851, and includes features such as a passenger pillion, passenger pegs and hidden grab rails that fold out from under the seat. In stock form the exhaust cans sit relatively low to accommodate passenger legs, and the pillion is otherwise covered by color-coded bodywork. When fully assembled, the tail looks like a solo unit. Components are as you might expect: Suspension by Showa, braking by Brembo. Horsepower is in the 95 HP range stock, making peak power at about 9,500 RPM.

There is a note on the title stating mileage has exceeded mechanical limits,which is an error from the title office application form,they inform me it can not be removed.If this is an issue please bid on someone elses bike.

This particular example has some tasty mods. The Gia.Co.Mo carbon cans are lightweight and sound marvelous – however the high placement pretty much eliminates the passenger pegs. The FI chip is necessary to tune the bike to the new exhaust, and generally wake up throttle response. The other bits are what you might expect a bike of this age to accumulate over time; some performance parts, and some maintenance items. The rear pillion cover is missing, and the plastic over the taillight should be red, not black. But otherwise this looks to be complete. Thumbs up for all of the service details, as that is a critical element to these bikes. I’m not familiar with upgrading the oil cooler to something later/larger, but these engines do utilize oil as a cooling medium in addition to being water cooled, so there may be a performance gain. Not sure what to make of the odo reading on the title; that might take some investigation. Lots of people watching this one, but with the price way down in the $3,500 range at time of writing (reserve in place), this one still has some runway. Walks like a Duck: 1991 Ducati 851 Strada

Ducati is responsible for some of the most iconic motorcycles in the world. They are also purveyors of more marketing ploys than any other manufacturer, as evidenced by the endless parade of Limited Edition models. Therefore, words like “special” and “rare” are used so often as to appear meaningless. But limited numbers aside, Ducati has made some revolutionary leaps along its long history, cementing their place in motorcycling history with truly milestone machines. Not content to simply evolve one step at a time, at certain points in history Ducati doubled down on a new idea, catapulting forward along the performance curve. The introduction of the 851 was just such a moment. Today’s bike, a 1991 851 Strada, is a good example of that revolution.

If you think about the major technological jumps prior to the late 1980s, Ducati went from being a small bore, single cylinder manufacturer to producing twins. The L-twin configuration evolved over time, but was invariably a small step forward along the same route. The introduction of the Pantah could be seen as a leap, but in reality that move was more towards efficient production than outright performance. The Pantah was essentially the same air-cooled, two valve desmo twin as the bevel drive that came before, with only mild steps in go-power. With the 851, however, Ducati turned their own ideas of performance on its head. Simultaneously introducing liquid cooling, fuel injection AND a four valve, desmo actuated head, the 851 was a massive step forward from a technology perspective and performance. Did it work? Raymond Roche, participating in World SBK, took 3rd overall in 1989, was champion in 1990 and came in second in the two years to follow.

Stored in Las Vegas Nevada for 8-12 years by the 2nd owner. Condition was not damaged or crashed.

Work that’s been done since Nov 2017:
Major service including valve and shim adjust, new cam belts installed, degree the cams and clean and adjust throttle bodies by a qualified Ducati service tech.

New parts include:

Plus, brakes have been flushed and radiator has been flushed. Left and right fairings have been painted.

Also I chose the very rare, period correct carbon Termignoni high mount exhaust and they sound beautiful. There is also a header modification, see pics. Other special parts included are rear Ohlins shock with remote adjuster. Ohlins steering damper.
Included with the bike are the original mufflers, passenger footpegs, owner’s manual, one key and original windscreen.

Like many Ducatis, the 851 was released in a few different flavors. What you see here – the Strada or street edition – was the base model. This is not a homologation bike, although the basic platform is the same to the SP series. The Strada was the most streetable, complete with a passenger pillion hiding under the color coded tail cover, and nifty passenger grab handles that pivot out from beneath the seat. 1991 and 1992 were the last years of the 851 – the 1992 SP versions of this model actually contained a 888 motor, although the Strada remained an 851. But this speaks to the robustness and longevity of the basic mill, as even the 888 eventually became a 916 while still being badged as an 888. This is a milestone bike for Ducati, and the platform that won SBK victories and birthed the 888 and legendary 916.

Today’s 851 Strada example looks to be in great shape – with wonderful photos. Mileage is reasonable considering you are looking at a 27 year old performance bike. There are a few added farkles in the manner of tinted windscreen and carbon bits, and the high-mount carbon Termis which look great. They interfere with the passenger pegs, however, so those have been removed (but are available with the sale). The Ohlins upgrades are choice, to be sure. The add ons and upgrades do not cause concern. The seller notes that both sides of the fairing have been painted – with no comment as to why. It may have been simply cosmetic, as there is no real evidence of the bike being down. Either way, it looks great in the pictures, appears to be very clean and cared for, and with those Termi cans I’m sure it sounds incredible. A big plus is that all services have been recently completed.

Well-preserved 851 examples have held up in value reasonably well. This was a watershed bike for Ducati, and it continues to be a sought-after model. This particular bike sits below $6k at time of writing, with reserve not met. No telling how high the reserve is set, but I would estimate somewhere around $7-8k would be in the money. We have definitely seen these cross the auction block for less, but the market can be a funny thing. Just check out some of the comments on the more rare examples of Ducati exotica featured in the pages of RSBFS to read comments such as “I remember when you could pick up one of those for just $xxx…” Check out the auction here, as this bike is currently a bargain. Ready-to-ride redhead: 1997 Ducati 916 Strada

Here is a Ducati 916 that is in good condition but probably won’t appreciate in value as a collectors item.  It fact, it seems more likely this lovely redhead would be a fun acquisition for someone who missed out on the 916/996/998 experience or perhaps a way for a prior 916 owner to relive a bit of their youth.

There have been numerous previous posts on RSBFS that have explored the impact the 916 had on motorcycling, both when it was launched in 1994 and the subsequent SP, SPS, 996 and 998 models.  Rather than repeat this info again, I would suggest anyone who is curious click the link above and browse these past posts, leaving the remainder of this post as an analysis of this particular 916, focusing on the model, components, conditions, service history and best guess at a price.

MODEL:
This listing appears to be for a standard 1997 strada/”street” version and not the higher end SP, despite the white tail piece.  For anyone not familiar with the differences between the two models, the strada was the base/street version while the SP was the more track oriented edition.   All 916’s offered incredibly well balanced handling compared to the competition of the day but none had great power below 5000 rpm and only really started to get “on the boil” @ around 7000 rpm.  The SP (and susequent SPS) were much more track oriented machines with more powerful engines and track componenets but were actually worse on the street than the strada due to their engine setup;  the SP/SPS didn’t really exceed the performance of the strada until you got them over 8000 rpm which made them much harder to ride on the street.

Summary:  Good way to experience the 916.  Not as collectible as a SP or SPS but easier to live with if the intent is to ride it on the street. 

COMPONENTS:
While the 916 was by design one of the finest handling machines of its time, two areas that came up as points of improvement where the rear suspension and the brake lines.   This particular 916 appears to be equipped with an Ohlin’s rear shock which is good because it  was a big improvement over the standard Showa unit and helped to improve the ride quite a bit.  However the seller does not make any mention of the brake lines which were upgraded to braided steel in later versions so this might a question mark for this bike.

SUMMARY:  Looks good but might need to spend a few dollars to upgrade the brake lines.  Come to think of it, a full brake refresh would be a good idea.

CONDITION:
Mileage is shown as 13626 miles which is less than 1000 a year, although I would be the majority of that came more than 10 years ago. The seller does note some scuffs and a few cracks but I don’t see any evidence of the bike having been down and replacements are available via ebay.   Parts look to be mostly OEM with the exception of the exhaust, the SP style rear fairing and perhaps a tail tidy/license plate unit.

SUMMARY:
If not having perfect bodywork bothers you, prepare to spend money or look for a different bike.  Overall nothing that looks to impact performance.

SERVICE:
The seller indicates fresh rubber and belts which has is good but also mentions a new clutch which might be an indication of more serious problems. The only issue I saw as the color of the fluid in the front brake fluid reservoir, although that might just be due to the lighting in the picture.

Here is what the seller has to say.

  • 12 k service done, new cam belt and plugs
  • new clutch EVR 12 tooth housing and plates.
  • new fuel pump
  • new Michelin Pilot tires
  • new factory air filters
  • New fuel tank release valves  
  • Recall 99v-360 rear axle spindle replacement done
  • Services done at Ducati dealer (have invoices) at 11,500 miles

SUMMARY:   Sounds good but a few questions, also it would be good to see the receipts.

PRICE:
As stated at the beginning of this post, given the year, model and condition this 916 is probably going to appeal more to someone who wants to ride it than to a collector.  Recent prices for these have ranged from $4,000 USD to $6,500 USD, although an under 2000 mile first year unit went for almost $19,000.   Based on the condition of this one, I would expect a price smack in the middle and this seems to be born out by the current bidding which is just a smidge under $5,000 USD with 3 days to go.

FINAL ANALYSIS:

I think this is a good opportunity for someone who never got to experience the Ducati 916 to see what all the fuss was about.  It could also be a fun toy for a somewhat older rider to relive a bit of their youth.   While it won’t appreciate in value dramatically, it will probably hold its current value at least which is a a tribute to Massimo Tamburini’s design.  And yes, it still looks great so bringing it to bike night will still be fun…not many 20 year old bikes that can be said about.

Red Head, Tamburini Style: 1995 Ducati 916 with 3300 (ish) miles

We seem to be on a bit of a Ducati theme here at RSBFS of late but before we move off, here is one more…a lovely Ducati 916.  For those of a certain age, it was proably the first bike that ever caused feelings of motorcycle-based lust without any knowledge of performance or racing heritage. Today’s example is the standard/strada version with a mere 3310 miles as of this post and best of all, fresh maintenance.

When the Massimo Tamburini designed 916 arrived in America in 1995 it was a sensation, with quite a few young fans drawn by the lithe proportions that made other bikes of the era look bloated (I’m looking at you, Honda CBR1000).  Best of all the 916 sinuous form was matched by function; it really did handle and go well.  It was smaller and more powerful than the preceding 888 model, and while power was less than some of the Japanese competition of the day, at 114 bhp it was no slouch (NOTE: And anyone who wanted a bit more power, there was the SP model which looked the same but a more powerful engine).

Downsides?  Well the riding position was kind of brutal, and required belt maintenance was very pricey…but the design was so iconic it continued on in the 996 and 998 and still appears in lists of important designs in motorcycle history by authorities like the Guggenheim Museum.

As Motorcyclist magazine wrote in their recap of the 1990’s – “1994: Ducati 916 debuts. Did anything else happen that year?”

Condition of the this 916 strada looks to be very good and pretty much all OEM.  There is an odd crack in the upper fairing and some small paint chips and I am not sure if the exhaust is the Termignoni without stickers or something else but other than that it looks really really good.

The bike was gone through top-to-bottom by MCC in Villa Park on 7/5/2016 and had the following done (see picture of receipt for all the specifics):

So is this low mileage, Massimo Tamburini penned red head worth the current asking price of $7,499 USD?   If it was one of the top shelf/unobtainum SP versions maybe but given that this is the strada version, I would say probably not.  Even though Massimo Tamburini passed away back in April of 2014 and some of his creations are already climbing in value, I don’t think this 916 strada will appreciate much over time.

The last few of these on ebay seem to have gone for between around $5,700, + 500.  Given the condition of this one together with the low mileage and recent service and I would think a fair price would be between $6,000 and $6,400.  It might make a nice addition to anyone building a Tamburini inspired collection, perhaps parked between the Bimota SB2 and the MV Agusta 750 SP-01.

Fresh 1995 Ducati 916 with 7850 miles

Has it really has been over 20 years since the 916 debuted?  Back in 1995 the blood beauty from Bologna Italy appeared in the USA and was a sensation, a bike that tempted with a form that couldn’t possibly match the function…but it did.  The shape became a signature for Cagiva (who owned Ducati at the time) and was replicated in the lineup via the 748/Cagiva Mito and continued on in the 996 and 998.

The Tamborini penned design was so iconic that it still appears in lists of important designs in motorcycle history by authorities like the Guggenheim Museum.  In a retrospective on the 1990s, Motorcyclist magazine simply stated, “1994: Ducati 916 debuts. Did anything else happen that year?”

Note: The 916 was introduced in 1994 but didn’t become available for sale in the USA until 1995, so even though this is 1995 model it is a first year edition in the USA – Marty

This lovely survivor appears to be a basic 916 edition, which is also referred to as the “Strada”.  It isn’t as exotic as the SP or SPS versions that followed it so it probably won’t appreciate in value dramatically and it lacks the refinements of the 996 and 998, including most significantly the better riding position.  Also even though it has some Cagiva stampings on it, the VIN# leads me to believe this is not an early Varese produced model.

On the plus side condition looks to be quite good, it has under 8,000 miles and I am pretty sure there is a Bimota in the background so it seems safe to say this one is owned by an Italian bike fan and possibly a collector.

According to the seller has had some recent services.   However I don’t see any mention of fresh tires/rubber or the all important belt maintenance so some additional monies would probably be needed to get this one back on the road.

Here is what the seller has to say;

  • First-year-in-the-USA unmolested Ducati 916 in excellent, low mileage condition.
  • Almost completely stock
  • Starts immediately and runs perfectly.  Brand new lightweight Lithium-Fe battery just installed
  • Oil & filter changed, forks serviced 30 miles ago.
  • Sargent seat
  • Termi mufflers (stock Ducati mufflers included in sale)
  • Evoluzione clutch slave cyl and braided steel brake lines are the only mods done to this survivor bike.
  • Some very small flaws- typical scrapes on the wheels due to tire changes, a small and barely noticeable ding on tank, very small chip on the tank about 2″ in front of the gas filler.

Is this clean early edition 916 worth the $7,000 USD asking price?  Well the last one of these we had on RSBFS looks like it went for about $6,900 USD so the price is right in line with that one. However right now prices for these seem to be a bit all over the place; I found the following current listings with a range from $4,000 to $16,000 for a couple of SPS editions.

I know some would make a case that the 916/916SP/916SPS and later 996 amd 998 appear here on RSBFS so often that they aren’t really rare sportbikes.  This one looks to be in very good shape but it isn’t completely stock, the seller indicates a few minor blemishes and it is the Strada model which does not seem to be highly sought after by collectors.  But the 916 was probably THE bike that took Ducati from being a still struggling mid-level manufacturer to object of lust for a generation.   I think this one might appeal to someone who originally lusted after one and couldn’t afford it at the time…perhaps good for weekend rides and then life as a living room object d’art the rest of the week.

The Start of Something – 1988 Ducati 851 Tri-Colore Strada

Here’s one for our European visitors (or those ambitious enough to attempt the import process)…  an all original 1988 Ducati 851 Tri-Colore Strada up for auction in Italy.  The 851 was the introduction of Ducati’s “desmodronic” four valve heads and a big leap forward in an attempt to catch the Japanese manufacturers.  The 851 featured the signature Ducati steel trellis frame, Marvic wheels, Brembo brakes and those funky side pod mirrors.  Ducati’s work paid off quickly in the form of a World Superbike Championship in 1990 with Raymond Roche in the saddle and Ducati was officially back.  The 851 would be the forefather to the very successful 888 and 916 models.

Now, this one IS located in Italy, so our US readers might throw up their hands in frustration, but surely somebody in Italy is reading this and will give her a good home, no?

The seller is upfront in stating that the bike is in “average condition” with some typical wear and tear that’s to be expected as it’s nears it’s 30th birthday.  So, again, this would either make a good restoration candidate or a really cool classic to actually get out and ride.  Check it out here: 1988 Ducati 851 on eBay in Italy

Bike is 99% original, paintwork is average as the general conditions, still with all the original rare parts as the 16″ wheels, original silencers etc. 

Mechanically is very sound with just 25500kms from new (a lot of documentation to prove). Original UK sold bike, all history present.

Bike is currently located in Italy, 33080 Roveredo in Piano (Pordenone) but i can get them delivered all around the World at cost, no problem.

Moving the Game Forward: 1988 Ducati 851 for Sale

Motorcycle Designer Pierre Terblanche is a somewhat controversial figure in the world of motorcycle design. Notably held responsible for Ducati’s controversial 749/999 bikes and Sport Classics, you’ll find a great deal of internet hate directed at him. I happen to be a fan of the 749/999 bikes but I acknowledge that they’re not especially pretty bikes. I expect that they’ll eventually be recognized as classics in their own right, and they are certainly more humane and useable bikes than the notoriously uncomfortable 916.

However, many people who are highly critical of his designs forget that he was also penned the innovative Supermono and was also responsible for the 900SS redesign, along with the 851/888 bikes. The Ducati 851 is obviously not as iconic or as elegant as the later 916, it’s also far less common, and has a very simple, purposeful look that suits it.

Setting the stage for Ducati’s modern superbikes, the liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, four-valve 851 displaced, perhaps surprisingly, 888cc’s and made just over 100bhp. Not all that much in today’s terms, but those 104 horses came with a flat wall of torque that shoots the bike out of corners with authority, accompanied by the characteristic musical booming that Ducati fans know so well.

Suitable for any museum or private collector or someone that just wants to ride but I recommend a full service and new tires first.
Dials, gauges and switch gear are nice and bright, not faded. Body paint quality nice and clean. No stress cracks in fibreglass bodywork, never dropped.

Overshadowed by the Tamburini design that followed, these are still largely unappreciated. From a historical point of view, the 851/888 represents a huge step forward for Ducati into the modern era with their use of liquid-cooling and four-valve heads. This particular example has a really nice carbon, dual-headlight fairing fitted by well-known California Laverda tuner Lance Weil. It may not be to everyone’s taste, but the original parts are included, so it should be very easy to put right.

Maybe it’s not the prettiest bike, but one that does the business and is rare to boot. Grab this for relative peanuts, then start scouring the internet for a 50mm Termignoni “spaghetti” full race exhaust for the full, window-shattering experience.

2002 MV Agusta F4 S for sale

One of my favorites of the era, the MV Agusta F4 750 still evokes an emotion that maybe 10 other bikes of the past 25 years share. I realize it’s not that fast compared to it’s competition (or it’s later iterations) of the time, and it came with a hefty price new as well. But it is so striking to my eyes and has such a unique pedigree that I always take note when a nice one appears. As such, when I see one that has a reasonable 10k miles and a disclosed reserve of $7k, it makes me start rearranging the garage to find space. Is the F4 S the bargain exotic that enthusiasts should consider as an entry collector bike?

2002 MV Agusta F4 750, 749CC, I4, 6-Speed. Upgraded with the RG3 race exhaust & EPROM tuned by Ferraci. This bike was originally purchased as a collectors bike with no miles till 2009. Since being ridden it has been maintained with an authorized MV Agustadealer to the highest degree and is immaculate. The F4 engine is a liquid cooled inline 4 cylinder (4-stroke) with DOHC, 16 radial valves, electronic multipoint injection, and induction discharge electronic ignition. The S in the F4 750 S stands for Strada and is essentially the same as the F4 750 Oro but with aluminum pieces in place of magnesium. Top speed is estimated at 170 mph, with a 0-60 mph of 3.1 secs and the quarter mile in 10.98 sec. The MV Agusta F4 750 was the most eagerly awaited slice of Italian superbike exotica pretty much delivered on all counts. Simply stunning Massimo Tamburini styling was the most beautiful since the same designers Ducati 916 of 1994 (and is generally considered to still be the most beautiful bike in production). Spec, build quality and handling was there to match. Only the MV Agusta F4 750’s screaming four-cylinder engine failed to be a world beater still good though. The F4 750 is an instant classic and coveted and collected in equal measure.
