Genesis Device: 1988 Yamaha FZR1000 for Sale

Over in the comments sections of another post, we’ve been debating the relative merits and values of some of the priciest motorcycles, but it’s still possible to find something cool, collectible, and very competent if you’re on a limited budget. It’s not one of Yamaha’s fastest sportbikes, but this first-generation FZR1000 might be their most historically significant. At the moment, it’s also one of the most unappreciated machines of the modern era: if the GSX-R was the first sportbike of the modern age, it can be argued that the FZR1000 actually codified the formula.

The original version of the FZR1000 built from 1987 through 1988 seen here was powered by a 989cc version of Yamaha’s inline four. It did not feature their signature EXhaust Ultimate Power or “EXUP” valve in the exhaust system, but did use their “Genesis” heads with three intake and two exhaust valves. Five-valve technology proved more useful in theory than in practice, in spite of the fact that Yamaha stuck with it for a pretty long time. But, perhaps more importantly, the Genesis engine’s characteristic steeply forward-canted cylinder head allowed the airbox to be located under the fuel tank instead of between the rider’s knees.

However, the bike’s defining feature was the aluminum beam “Deltabox” frame, the first time one had been used in a big bike like this. The contemporary GSX-R used an aluminum frame, but the square-tube construction was more of a cradle-type that looked backward towards past designs, while Yamaha’s beefy Deltabox was a much more forward-thinking concept. The frame spars were positively massive for the time, but the thin-walls meant the structure was as light as it was strong, and while five-valve heads proved to be a bit of a fad, thick beam frames have stood the test of time.

Looking at the spec sheet, all you’d need to do is add a sixth gear to the box and you could be looking at something from just a few years ago: the aluminum beam frame, liquid cooling, under-tank airbox, and 17″ wheels all sound very modern. It’s obviously from a different generation and is both heavier and less powerful by far than current literbikes. But it was very much the complete package when new, and the five-speed gearbox speaks to the bike’s seemingly bottomless well of torque and flexible midrange, qualities shared with the GSX-R1100, a bike that also lacked a sixth cog.

Ideally, if you’re looking at an FZR1000 you’d probably want something just a little bit newer, as the thorough redesign for 1989 featured a slight bump in displacement and the addition of the EXUP valve, but this is the original, and looks very sophisticated in blue and white speedblock graphics.

Up for auction is my 1988 FZR1000.  It is titled in my name and is currently registered in  the state of California til October 2018.  It is a nice survivor.  It has various scratches and some cracks here and there but overall in very clean condition.  It has good tires, a new fuel pump, fuel filter, various fuel lines, carb cleaning and synchronization done Dec of last year, rebuilt fuel valves, battery new last year, new windshield, front brake master cylinder rebuilt and a couple other things I can’t remember  now.  It comes with a tank bag, some spare parts and a service manual. It handles, runs, starts, brakes fine….although maybe it could use another carb cleaning as it has been sitting.  Still you could ride it right now…..it has  good  power.

Some things it would need is a new headlight.  Choke doesn’t work but it still starts easy when cold. Return throttle cable not hooked on.  Fuel pump is controlled by a switch in the back  so you may want to hook up correctly…..and I’m sure a few other things I can’t remember right now.

If anyone is interested but not local…PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE ask questions and request photos of any area of the bike you would like.  I REALLY PREFER SOMEONE LOCAL WHO COULD COME BY AND KICK THE TIRES AND INSPECT IN PERSON but if not please ask all the questions you want before bidding.  Although this bike is clean and a survivor it has not been in a box the last 30 years ridden only 50 miles so keep that in mind.  It currently has 20950 miles. I may make a couple trips up the mountain before it’s gone so there may be a few more miles on it.

The Yoshimura tri-oval exhaust obviously isn’t stock, and isn’t even trying to look period-correct, but I actually like it: stock exhausts of the era are often pretty heavy and very ugly. Overall, the bike has some usual chips and wear you’d expect on a bike this old, but it seems honest. And the seller includes a nice video of the bike starting and running, with some closeups. Slingshot Gixxers and other late 1980s sportbikes have been rising in value, but the Yamahas seem to have been lagging behind a bit, and while the later EXUP models will probably be a bit more desirable, this early machine is historically significant. And also pretty cool. There are several days left on the auction and no takers yet at the $2,150 opening bid. It may not be original, but this could be a hell of a do-it-all machine with style if you’re on a budget and looking for something out of the ordinary.

This isn’t a museum piece but it is an honest survivor from the original owner. The revolutionary 5 valve per cylinder heads were cutting edge at the time and the technology was used in many future models like the FZR1000 and OW01. Having covered only 14k miles this example looks very complete and is reported as never dropped though has some patina as shown in the pictures. Current bid is just over $1500 reserve not met.

Up for sale is my 1985 FZ750 that I purchased new at M&M Cycle in Kalamazoo, MI during July of 1985. This is the first year of the 5-valve Genesis engine for Yamaha. These are rare and most were used for roadracing in the late 80’s. This bike has never been crashed and the engine has never been taken apart. It is stock with the exception of the following adds: K&N Dynojet Kit and a Vance & Hines SS2R header. Also included is a cover, Factory Yamaha rear seat cowl and two Metzeler tires that were replaced less than 500 miles ago.

Overall the bike is in extremely nice condition, however the following imperfections exist: there is some checking (lines) on the tank primarily in the blue stripe area but some in the lower silver area also, small scratch (1/4′) on the front edge of front fender and the tank has a dent near the filler cap (see pics).

This FZ runs well and had a battery replacement last year. It has a very mean, throaty sound due to the individual K&N filters on each carb. In my opinion it is one of the best sounding inline 4s you will find.

It Survived The 80’s: 1988 Yamaha FZ750

I can’t remember the last time one of these has passed over my executive sized desk here at RSBFS World HQ.  Not an SP, not an OW but just as rare.  I can remember witnessing a few fraternity house parking lot burn outs with the old FZ (shirtless of course).  Very few reached the hands of people who had the idea of a very long term relationship with the bike though.  It sounds like this one was spotted by the seller, given a little maintenance and put up for sale.

I never get tired of seeing the ‘ordinary’ bikes that survive; especially unmolested.

If you didn’t click on the video, the seller mentioned they sprayed the wheels in gold for stylistic reasons.  Originally they would have been white.

I always think these are the hardest types of bikes to value.  I think everyone gets a kick out of seeing a bike they might have enjoyed earlier in life but that doesn’t mean they are buyers now.  I guess it might hinge on how good a deal the seller got.   The auction is just starting out and sits at $1,000 with the reserve still on.  Hopefully the seller can make a little coin and the buyer can get a great ride down memory lane at a good price.

It seems to be the season for rare, vintage Bimotas. First we saw Phil’s post on the legendary SB3 (click here for more details), and then sharp-eyed RSBFS reader Zach pointed out that this 1988 YB4 is back on the market. This is not the first time we have seen this bike: the seller posted his entire collection of homologation racers on RSBFS last year (click here for the original post). While some bikes from the collection sold, the YB4 did not.

So what is a YB4? Take a Yamaha FZ750 5-valve Genesis motor, augment it with custom fuel injection, stuff it into a stout, twin-spar aluminum frame, wrap it in voluptuous, hand-laid ‘glass, suspend it with the best Marzocchi forks of the day, and stop it with top line Brembos. Bimota built just enough of them in 1988 (200) to qualify for homologation status, allowing them to compete in World Superbike Championship. It didn’t hurt that it was a winning package.

With typical Bimota artistic attention to detail, this is a very beautiful motorcycle. Great handling, good power and exceptional light weight make this a very desireable collectable. Ultimately, Bimota created just over 300 of these YB4 machines over a two year run – and finding one in the U.S. is a rare event.

This bike is available on eBay again, and interest has been moderate. The current bid is up to $7,100 at the time of this writing, which is still below the reserve. Introduced in 1985, the FZ750 was a solid performer, but as we all know it was quickly outpaced by the GSX-R’s in 1986. The FZ’s sported some of Yamaha’s modern era technology and utilized the Genesis 5 valve cylinder heads which helped pump out a whopping 75hp at the rear wheel. Granted, not much by today’s standard, but in 1986 that was kik’n some ass!

I can remember spending hours in the local Yamaha showroom drooling over the latest offerings from Yamaha in 1986. All the while knowing good and well that I couldn’t afford the brochure I was holding in my hand.

1986 Yamaha FZ750 – second of two posts

I haven’t quite figured out how to properly post multiple listings in the same post, so for the time being please bear with my separate postings. 

Anyway, here’s :

This is a true collector.  This bike looks great, turns heads and is FAST.  The motorcycle is in great condition. It has all four rebuilt carbureators, new brakes, new tires, new clutch, serviced one year ago with over 1200.00 in repairs and new parts and it has never been wrecked. It has a salvage title because it was stolen and the insurance money was collected then it was found and returned. It runs beautifully and has been a great bike.

This bike is no where near the condition of the first FZ, and the salvage title is a bit concerning, but the given the right price, this can be a very usable classic on a day to day basis (the FZ750 engine is very robust with oil change intervals of 7500 miles and valve gear adjustment every 25,000 miles).
