By the 1980s, the Japanese were absolutely dominating the world motorcycle market, and manufacturers that couldn’t keep up with their breakneck pace of development were quickly pushed aside. It’s a shame that Laverda, eclipsed in terms of outright performance, was forced to pivot to sport-touring machines like this RGS 1000 Executive but damn, if it doesn’t have style to spare. Early three-cylinder Laverdas like the 3C and the mighty Jota used a 180° crank that, while giving the engine a raw and charismatic feel, also provided plenty of vibrations to numb your hands on long rides and blur your mirrors. Later bikes like this RGS used a smoother 120° component that improved things significantly, and the enclosed bodywork meant better wind protection for longer rides. Of note is the fuel-filler door in the front right of the fairing, an interesting detail and a sure conversation-starter for anyone not familiar with the brand.
Experience the perfect blend of Italian craftsmanship, performance, and style with this meticulously maintained 1984 Laverda RGS 1000 Executive. Designed for long-distance touring with an added touch of exclusivity, this rare model stands out with its iconic fairings, enhanced ergonomics, and the legendary 981cc triple-cylinder engine.
One of the finest original RGS 1000 Executive models we’ve ever seen, this bike has been collector-owned and always kept in a climate-controlled environment. Recently serviced by the experts at Retrospeed in Belgium, WI, it’s ready to be enjoyed on the road or admired in your collection.
With only an estimated 200 Executive models ever built and believed to have just 4,717 original miles, this machine is as rare as it is elegant. The 981cc inline triple fires up effortlessly and runs outstanding, paired with a smooth 5-speed transmission.
Executive options include raised handlebars, a wider front fairing, rear fender extension, a mounting system with rear hard-case bags (complete with interior shoulder-strap bags), and never-mounted fairing wind deflectors. Exotic and refined, the RGS Executive represents the pinnacle of Italian high-performance touring bikes.
I’ve known the Laverda RGS 1000 Executive existed, but haven’t seen one for sale in years, so I can’t really comment on the $18,900 asking price. Unfortunately, I imagine it’s in the ball park, considering what other Laverda triples are going for these days. Purists might bemoan the refinement and smoothness of the 120° crank engine, but these sound great in person, raw and aggressive and wholly in keeping with the Laverda name. Maintenance costs will probably be high if you use this for its intended purpose, but I can think of no better way to arrive at a remote, impossibly elegant destination. If I could afford it, I’d have this just for rides up to Carmel for Monterey Car Week…

When I see people spending this kind of money and more for 1970’s era Honda small displacement (50cc-70cc) and some of those X-Mas Edition ’86 Honda Z50RD mini-bikes bringing over $20K…this Laverda is a very reasonable buy @ $18.9K! Wish I could afford…or better said: “Justify spending the money to won it!”
