Cycle World famously said sportbikes would soon be split into two categories: before the GSX-R and after. That was 1985. Suzuki brought the 750 to the US in ’86, and at 388 pounds dry it made everything else in the class feel like it was wearing a winter coat.
With under 2,800 original miles, this one dodged the usual GSX-R fate. Most of these got ridden hard, raced, or just used up, since that’s what they were built for. Finding a survivor with mileage this low is the exception, not the rule.
The seller’s swapped to a later fork, wheels, and brakes off a 1990 model, a common upgrade path on these early Gixxers since the stock ’86 suspension and stoppers show their age fast. Full Yosh system and Mikuni carbs round it out. Original parts come with the bike, so a future owner can put it back to numbers-matching if that’s the goal.
Clean title, second owner, known California history, all per the seller. That’s about as low risk as this era of bike gets, if it checks out. At $11,500, it’s not cheap, but for a survivor with paperwork this straight, it’s fair.

Yes, originally a southern CA bike, now a northern CA bike but out of state plate? Something is off here, title issues? Prior salvage or something?
Washington will issue a historic plate to anything over 30 years old if I recall. It’s a one time fee to register. I’ve registered all my older bikes up there as I still have residency. Saves having to pay out hundreds each year to California DMV for a vehicle that is seldom ridden. It will not change the title status regarding salvages. There are challenges if you try to register now in California as you’ll need to verify all the appropriate EPA badges are attached.
