As the old saying goes, “It’s more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow.” That’s not to say it isn’t supremely fun to ride a fast bike fast, but let’s be honest here: most riders aren’t really capable of riding modern superbikes anywhere near their limit, even on a race track. And it also brings up the fact that today’s sportbikes are so fast, you can’t possibly access their full performance on the road without taking massive risks with your body and license. That’s not so much a problem with today’s Featured Listing, a Honda CBR400RR.

For most Americans, referencing the CBR400RR or “Baby Blade” just results in quizzical looks. But that’s no surprise, since the bike only recently became eligible for import here, and the CBR400 is still tricky to register if you have a strict DMV. Intended for the Japanese market, the bike has surprisingly sophisticated specifications for something with such a small engine.

It really is a miniature superbike: 399cc sixteen valve inline four with gear-driven cams and a six-speed gearbox. An aluminum beam frame, instead of the CBR600’s steel unit, with adjustable suspension front and rear. Power was 59hp stock, with another 10hp or so available with a bit of tuning and dry weight was a claimed 360lbs, so performance was pretty sprightly, in spite of the limited power. Interestingly, it was sold alongside the V4-engined VFR400R, so Honda had two different 400cc sportbikes available for sale at the same time.

This example is being offered up by our friends at Iconic Motorbikes in Marina Del Rey, California. I’ve seen it in person and, other than the surface corrosion visible on the fork legs and footpeg brackets, something common on Japanese imports and bikes exposed to the ocean air, it’s complete and very sharp-looking.

These little 400’s are very hard to find in the USA and even more rare on the road. The ones that you do find are typically REALLY rough or loaded with oxidation or aftermarket bodywork.

This little gem however only has less then 9,400 miles (15,063 km), all 100% stock and original and ready for a new owner.  She starts right up with a little bit of choke and has a smooth throttle curve thereafter. If you’re looking for something that you’ll likely never see pull up next to you on the road… this is your girl!

Quick note, notice the oxidation on the rearsets and fork legs.  Pretty much it’s only major flaw but again, very common on Japanese imports and a super easy fix.  We have our own media blaster so we could essentially clean them up for the buyer if required but there’s some shop time involved for pulling the forks and rearsets apart.  Either or 🙂

As the seller clearly indicates: if you live in California, don’t even think about it, unless you are looking to build a small-displacement race bike, or just plan to display the bike. Bike currently has Arizona plates. Otherwise, this is one sweet little machine and would be plenty of fun on your local back road. The starting bid is $7,400 with no takers as yet, and a couple days left on the auction.

Sharp Little Blade: 1991 Honda CBR400RR NC29 for Sale

If you’re into bikes that aren’t obviously compensating for something, this little Honda CBR400RR offers big-bike looks and serious refinement in a more compact, less overwhelming package. The included photos are very nice, but the seller has included just three of them, so I’ll keep this post short. In general, 400cc sportbikes from this period are grey market imports: while very popular overseas and in particular in their home market of Japan, there was little to no interest in a sportbike displacing less than 600cc here in the USA.

That’s unfortunate, because this “Baby Blade,” so called because its bigger sibling was called the “Fireblade” in other markets, was a pretty sophisticated machine. It was powered by a 399cc inline four with sixteen valves, gear-driven twin overhead cams that was suspended in a stiff aluminum frame. The 70hp available from de-restricted versions was put through a six-speed gearbox and overall there’s plenty of fun to be had on a tight canyon road.

Americans actually could pick up the CBR’s close relative in the relatively obscure CB-1 that used a detuned version of the CBR’s engine but replaced the aluminum frame with one made of steel. Weight was similar as the CB didn’t have a fairing, but it looks like Honda might have gambled correctly in not importing the CBR, since the CB-1 didn’t sell very well.

Greg at Deftone Cycles is one of a few friends of the site who consistently manages to curate a stable of top-notch grey-market bikes. This 1990 Honda CBR400RR is no different, and is being offered at no reserve.

The bike wears Honda’s signature red-white-blue fairings, which have survived their 28 years and 9,000 miles with just a few blemishes. The biggest issue, a small crack in a lower fairing, was repaired before the bike was put on offer. Aside from some aluminum oxidation here and there, the unrestored machine is otherwise very clean.

The CBR400RR managed to survive a kind of odd place in Honda’s lineup, wedged between the truly insane, 20,000-RPM CBR250RR, the special-feeling, V4-powered VFR400R and the CBR600. Still, in the markets where it was available from new it sold in bushels, thanks to being license-friendly, faster than the 250, cheaper than the VFR and blessed with the poise and marvelous engine Honda made its name on.

This one is nice enough to end up in a collection or be used daily. We’d probably land somewhere in the middle, reserving the beast for weekend blasts and perhaps the occasional track day.

Baby ‘Blade: 1992 Honda CBR400RR NC29 for Sale

The Honda CBR400RR was designed to appeal to buyers in certain countries that were limited to bikes of smaller displacement because of tiered licensing requirements or heavy taxes on larger machines. Racing classes in those markets also existed to campaign 400cc motorcycles, and were hotly contested by the usual suspects: Yamaha, Suzuki, and Kawasaki also had smaller versions of their popular sportbikes. Honda even went a step further, and offered a second 400cc sportbike in their V4-powered VFR400R. Unlike today’s smaller-displacement offerings, these were grown-up sportbikes in miniature: instead of a simple single-cylinder engine or an economical parallel-twin, the CBR400 used a 399cc inline four with sixteen valves, gear-driven twin overhead cams, backed by a six-speed gearbox, and suspended in a stiff aluminum frame. Straight-line performance was modest by today’s standards, but bikes in the class had handling that was often better than their more powerful, but generally heavier siblings.

Americans saw a variation of this bike in the short-lived CB-1 that used a slightly detuned version of the CBR’s inline four, including the sexy gear-driven cams, but wrapped in a steel frame instead of the CBR’s lighter aluminum beam design. A lack of bodywork on the CB-1 kept the weight reasonable compared to the sportier CBR and the bike was a good handler, but Americans just weren’t ready for a pricey, naked machine like that in the late 1980s. Would the CBR have sold any better, had it been brought over? America had a pretty binary motorcycling culture through the 80s and 90s: people bought sportbikes or cruisers, with little interest in more practical machines. The CBR would have been similar to Yamaha’s offerings, whose little FZR400 was actually more sophisticated than the bigger-engined, but heavier, steel-framed FZR600. FZR400 is certainly a cult bike now, but its relative rarity suggests the CBR wouldn’t have been much of a success at the time, although I expect it might have sold better than the CB-1.

At the end of the day, without the laws and taxes that conjured the 400cc class into being, there isn’t much to recommend the bike over the CBR600 or CBR900, aside from superlative handling. The main appeal here is rarity, agility, and the fun of a motorcycle you can cane the hell out of without needing the skills of a professional racer, or a helicopter airlift ride to the nearest trauma center.

Very rare 1992 Honda CBR400 (baby Fireblade) NC29 legally imported from Japan and currently titled, insured and registered here in NJ. Bike has 13220 miles, fresh Motul (brake fluid, engine oil and coolant) fluids, TSR slip on, new NGK plugs, Continental Attack tires, carbs were cleaned and fuel tank drained/cleaned. This bike is very clean and in excellent condition. Please feel free to message if you have any questions. 

From the relatively low-resolution photos, this appears to be a very nice example of a cool, grey-market CBR400RR, but unfortunately the Buy It Now price is an eye-watering $9,500. New Jersey’s DMV may not be as draconian as California’s in terms of emissions requirements, but they’re even more strict in other ways, so the NJ title and registration suggests that the seller hasn’t cut any corners making this legal although, as always, caveat emptor.

The Honda CBR400 was produced between 1988 and 2000 and was a perfect middle step between the entry-level 250RR and the supersport 600. Don’t let that “learner bike” displacement fool you: the CBR400 was in every way a grown-up sportbike: the liquid-cooled inline-four featured gear-driven cams, a six-speed gearbox, triple disc brakes, and a lightweight, aluminum beam frame. All squeezed into a package that looked very much like a CBR900 that had been a bit shrunk in the wash… It was limited to a mere 59hp due to Japanese licensing requirements but, as you’d imagine, more power is readily available if you de-restrict it, and the resulting 70hp is more than enough to play with on the street or on tight circuits that favor handling over outright power.

This does look very similar to a CBR400 posted last month, with identical colors and similar miles, but it seems to be different bike: that one was in Georgia, this one in Canada, and some of the accessories are different as well.

1994 Honda CBR400RR R Side Tail

The $5,900 Canadian asking price equates to about $4,476 US, a very decent price for one of these, as recent CBR400s have sold in the $4,000-$5,500 range, depending on year and condition. The seller claims this has been recently serviced, features fresh rubber and is otherwise ready to roll. That black/burgundy paint scheme is pretty subtle, but I wonder if fans of the CBR are actually more interested in garish race-replica colors… In any event, the price is very reasonable, considering where recent examples have ended up. Obviously, US buyers will have to jump through some hoops after purchase, but that price is low enough to justify the effort. It’d make an ideal bike for someone of smaller stature, or someone who just wants to be different. Or someone who enjoys smoking much bigger bikes on tight roads with the throttle pinned to the stop.

1990 Honda CBR900RR for sale on eBay

If rare Honda’s are your thing, then you got to check out this CBR400RR. Granted, these aren’t too rare in certain other countries, but here in the US they don’t show up to often. These feature a 53hp inline four that screams to 14,500rpm while tipping the scales at roughly 360lbs dry.

OG RSBFS readers might recognize this exact bike being for sale in October 2010 (check Doug’s post here). It doesn’t look to have accumulated a single mile since the last go around and the sale ad is virtually the same, though now with more pictures.

As much as it pains me to do this, I am putting up my NC29 1990 CBR-400rr for sale. I have owned this bike for years and now have a new grandson to spend my money on. My baby RR is 100% street legal and you can ride it anywhere the day you get it! NO WORK NEEDED! She has new Pilot Powers front and rear, EBC brake pads, braided lines, carbon slip-on and Motul 300v synthetic in her veins. Motul brake fluid, Fox rear shock, steering damper, F-3 rear wheel conversion (17 inch) and progressive fork springs. ALL lights and electronics are 100%. I have safety-wired most every critical bolt because frankly I don’t like thinking about wheels, brakes, or oil plugs falling off. The bike runs and rides perfectly. For some unknown reason the speedo needle is stuck on zero but the odometer is still working, so mileage is accurate and is in kilometers. She is jetted and piped for optimum performance. Cosmetically all the ORIGINAL PLASTICS are in good shape, with the exception of a few rash marks from a previous owner. I always intended to restore the bodywork, so I purchased a set of aftermarket plastics and never got around to switching and restoring the originals. ALL will be included in this sale as well as a plethora of NEW SPARE PARTS (a couple grand worth) that are impossible to get and will keep you riding for years to come. Looks like the bike is still in the condition it was in back in 2010, including the suspension modifications (among others) and the slightly scrapped fairings and engine case. Now, I will say that this appears to be the exact ad and photos from the previous go around. Having said that, if this bike truly hasn’t acquired a single mile in that time I would hope that it is still in the condition as described. But this is a cool and unique bike that you can ride and enjoy without being afraid of a scratch. It also comes with a bunch of spare parts and a title ready to go. Honda’s Take On A In Line Four 400: 1994 Honda CBR400RR

cbr rightTalk about being the redheaded stepchild, the CBR400RR generally isn’t on the top of anyone wish list of grey market bikes.  Honda made life difficult for the little CBR by producing it alongside the superb RC30/45 clone, the VFR/RVF400.  Lowering its’ desirability here in the U.S. is the fact that it is a dead ringer for the CBR900RR, well except the munchkin size.  Too bad those factors might hold it back because reviews of the bike are positive and I’ve heard the rev it to the moon engine is a joy to experience.

The story on her:

For sale is a JDM-issue only 1994 CBR400RR, with the rare Type 8 NH-343P body work paint job. It has 15K on the odometer, and it isn’t clear how many kilometers were run up before it came here and got the speed reducer put on the speedo/odometer to change it to mph/miles.   There “might be” 25 of these Stateside – I’ve never seen or heard of another one!

These bikes are products of the “horsepower wars” that  the Big 4 Japanese companies waged in the early ’90s.  This CBR features the “Gull-Arm” rear swing arm. 

I am a serial fix-it guy, and I have had my fun with this. It was also carefully gone through by a local mechanic to fix a large hole in the torque curve. Once I took off the after-market exhaust and put the stocker back on – oh, man, this is how it should run! Note to owners of these multi-cylinder bikes from the ‘90s – Unless you are smarter than the Honda engineers, don’t mess with the engine – see before and after dyno chart.

The tank bag comes with it, the bike stand doesn’t.  I have a clear US title. 

I rounded up two new correct stock heel guards, two OEM mirrors, a new air filter, and a new windscreen. Looks great, goes great, RARE, no downside here.

I can personally vouch for the smile factor of 400cc bikes.  The high revving engines are a treat for the ears.

It’s titled and ready for the road.  The auction has an opening bid of $5,000 and a BIN of $7,000.  While rare, the little CBR’s tend to struggle to reach those numbers.

1991 Honda CBR400RR Titled & Registered In California

Another very nice CBR400RR has popped up in Northern California this time!  Located in Dublin, California is a titled and registered CBR400RR with no mileage listed.  This bike features a 2007 CBR1000RR front end with radial brakes, Penske rear shock, HRC ECU, and the regulator/rectifier modification.  This bike currently has the CBR front end but an RVF400 front end is also available at a different price.  The seller states that this bike is an exceptional example but, does feature some nicks and blemishes.  Service history includes:

Both front ends have recently been serviced, re-sprung and re-valved by Aftershocks. New DID x-ring chain. The tank has recently been cleaned. The carburetors have just been completely gone through by Donny Babb at Modesto Ducati. This bike runs perfect.

The asking price for the bike with the CBR1000RR front end is $6,500 and $5,500 with the RVF400R front end.  Personally, I would buy the bike with the RVF front end, save the money on the purchase and possibly upgrade to the CBR1000RR front end sometime in the future as the RVF front ends are only getting rarer and the CBR1000RR front ends are only getting cheaper.

When these CBR’s were available, they had all the features of a big CBR just in a smaller package.  They feature a DOHC, four valve per cylinder, transverse four cylinder, four stroke, producing 53hp and rev’ing to 14,500rpm.  An aluminum frame kept weight down to 163kg and they featured a Showa adjustable rear shock and flat-side carb’s .  This bike is just as exotic to us American’s as any other gray import but, features the dependability of a Honda four-stroke.  See the 1994 example Jay posted not too long ago here.  If you’re interested-and as always, you should be–see this bike on Craigslist here.

1994 HONDA CBR 400RR (NC29), MINT !!!!

Wow, and I mean “WOW”. Talk about a clean example of one of my favorite little bikes, here it is! I had an exact copy of this bike back in 1998 and absolutely loved it. I don’t want to sound like a salesmen but this thing looks dead nuts new and with the price at $5200 it’s a steal. Only a handful of gray market 400’s in this country exist and once you weed out all the “not so nice” ones you narrow your search dramatically for impeccable ones like this. These bikes are super dependable and use the same type motor as our US imported CB-1 (NC27) but have hotter cams and more compression. Located in So. Cal the owner makes a nice article on Craig’s List, I’m proud to post such a great well cared for example. Click here for the jump.

Hi! I’m selling my GREAT RUNNING, SUPER CLEAN 1994 Honda CBR400RR (aka NC29).

This is a “grey-market” bike imported into the US in 2000. They are very rare in the US and even more so in this condition. Compared to the US versions CBR F2/F3 of the same vintage these bikes were light-years ahead. Features include an aluminum frame and gull swing arm, 14,500 redline (makes you feel like a MotoGP star) folding passenger foot pegs and some actual storage under the seat.

She has 7700 Original Miles, has always been garaged, never raced, adult owned and is in excellent condition! She starts, runs and rides great! Everything works – idles smooth and runs strong. This bike is best suited for carving tight canyon roads and always draws a crowd. I’m constantly asked if it is a current model and love watching people’s jaw drop when I tell them its 15+ years old! I know I’m going to regret selling it but I am looking for something I can do some touring on…

I have the CLEAR California title in hand. Registration is CURRENT and is good until May 2010 – it will cost about $70 to renew the registration in CA – don’t know about other states. These bike are very hard to get registered in the US!!!

Downgrades:
• Typical Honda pitting on the Fork Lowers. I had planned on removing them and have them refinished but never got around to it…
• Very minor Dent on the right side of the tank. I got a quote from Dent Masters to remove for $100.00 but never got a chance to do. The tank would have to be removed and cleaned with a degreaser before they would work on it. It’s very minor and hardly noticeable (see pics)
• Minor nicks and scratches typical of a 3 or 4 year old bike (certainly not typical on a 15 year old example) The worst is a rub mark on the right side near the passenger seat and some scratches on the front fairing – left side (see pics) I want to disclose as much as possible so there are no surprises but I promise you will not be disappointed!

Warranty: This is a used motorcycle and is sold “as-is” with no warranty expressed written or implied from the seller. The seller will make every reasonable effort to disclose any known defects associated with this vehicle prior to the close of sell. Seller assumes no responsibility for any repairs required.
