Racetrack Refugee: 1998 Yamaha R7/R1 for Sale

Yamaha’s R7 was among the last in a long line of machines from the Age of Homologation Specials, where the manufacturers competing in AMA and World Superbike racing created limited runs of insanely expensive bikes that looked like production models, but were chock full of trick bits like adjustable steering heads and exotic engine internals. For the most part, these were based on pretty common machines from each manufacturer’s lineup. But in situations where nothing in the manufacturer’s stable really matched their needs, companies sometimes whipped up a bike whose whole production run was designed to allow the bike to compete in a variety of racing classes. By the late 1990s, the 750cc class was pretty much on its way out as a viable category for streetbikes, but that didn’t stop Yamaha from introducing their very trick and hideously expensive YZF-R7. How trick? Well the frame was claimed to have been based on Yamaha’s 500 Grand Prix machine. Just 50 were imported to the US out of 500 built in total. And how expensive? Well, the R7 was $32,000 late-nineties dollars, and that was before you included the race kit that actually made it fast.

Just one problem: from the factory, the R7 made just 106hp, which didn’t really provide the performance the looks or pricetag promised. The solution? Just pony up for the race kit that activated a second, dormant test of injectors and replaced the airbox for a revised part that unleashed a more appropriate 162hp but also gave racebike-like reliability. The biggest limitation of the R7 was that engine, and unleashing the full potential could be tricky and expensive, so owners that wanted to use their bikes on the road sometimes switched out the 749cc engine for the 998cc unit from the R1, which seems to have been done in this particular case. I’m under the impression that this was a relatively simple swap and, although it could be considered sacrilege, actually had several benefits: it gave very similar maximum power to the original engine, but with far more midrange, and it also meant the original engine could be saved to preserve the bike’s value for future collectors. That appears to have been done here, although the seller’s description does leave me with some questions.

This R7/R1 hybrid appears to have been built to a high standard by Graves Yamaha, so I’m sure they knew what they were doing and I’ve no doubt the bike is very special. But it would really help if the owner was clearer about what he has: he calls the powerplant a “OWO1 1000 superbike motor” but the OW01 was 749cc, although the five-valve inline four was related to both the R7 and the 998cc R1 units. The OW02 engine was supposedly based on that earlier engine and has the same displacement to conform to class limitations, but I’m not sure it can simply be punched out to a full 1000cc.

More likely, it has a later R1 engine, which was, as stated above, the simpler, much more reliable way to get the fully-unleashed R7’s 162hp without all the explode-y engine drama. Maybe it’s a full-factory superbike R1 unit? The seller also mentions the “half R7 and half R1 frame” which would require some very serious surgery if true. And which halves were used? Front and back? Left and right? Maybe it’s the R7 Deltabox with the R1 subframe? It’s also listed as a 1998 model, but I was under the impression that the bike was sold in 1999 and 2000.

This bike was built in house built by factory Graves race team and was one of Chuck Graves personal bikes. It might be one of only two left, this bike has every goodie you could imagine on it: Brembo brakes, Ohlins forks and rear shock, superbike radiator and tank, swing arm, custom half R7 frame and half R1 frame, Yamaha OWO1 1000 superbike motor, rear Brembo brakes, thumb brake, brake lines, rearsets, Akro pipe, after market wheels, chain sprocket kit, offset triple clamps. This bike new with the race kit harness was $43,000 and only 32 came to the US that year, it is a very limited production bike, to rebuild this bike in today’s time would cost over $100k plus the 1000 donor bike for parts, this bike looks like it just rolled off the race truck.

All-in-all, this modified R7 is a very cool machine, with plenty of very trick bits plainly visible, but I’d definitely want some answers to my questions before bidding on this one. Many, many questions, but worth asking, considering it is a Yamaha R7, after all. I’d especially want to know if the original motor is included, as a good chunk of the bike’s value is wrapped up in its originality, and while this might be an amazing machine and a true track-day weapon, all those modifications likely hurt the collector value. Rev happy import: 1989 Yamaha FZR400R

Yamaha FZR400s were available in the States for a good part of their run, and attracted a loyal club racing following thanks to liter-bike embarrassing corner speeds and engines that begged for revs. This 1989 Yamaha FZR400R is an import from the UK, and carries the bulbous front end from the legendary OW01 and a few go bits we didn’t get.

With a Tennessee title and registration already secured, it shouldn’t be too difficult to get the bike plated anywhere. The ’89 FZR400R carries the aluminum Deltabox swingarm and four-pot brakes that didn’t make our shores until the 1990 Fizzers broke cover.

It looks to be in decent condition overall, with about 15,500 miles on the clock. The fairings and paint look decent overall, but the bike shows minor rash down the left side.

Nimble Welterweight: 1988 Yamaha FZR400

The Yamaha FZR400 has a fiercely devoted following as a track day and club racing darling, thanks to its unusual for the time aluminum Deltabox frame, screaming engine and lithe curb weight. You don’t see too many on the streets in this country, where big-bore horsepower has always reigned supreme.

That’s a shame, because they’re a fantastic option for a cheap and exciting weekend mount, with an easy-to-use chassis, reasonable ergonomics for such a small bike and legendary handling. They don’t shine as every day rides, as the peaky engine really doesn’t appreciate being lugged around in traffic, but when reserved for occasional blasts they’re a riot.

The 1988 Yamaha FZR400 shown here is in great shape for a warm-season alternative to your regular steed. Its OEM plastics are long gone, replaced by decent-looking replicas, so there’s no real incentive to baby this one. Throw it in the shed until the roads are warm and dry and go play.

This is a 1988 Yamaha FZR400. The fairing is aftermaket except for the tank cover which is OEM, it also has OEM mirrors and turn signal covers which are getting very rare.. The bike runs and stops well. The carburetors need some work, the bike is cold blooded and requires time to warm up before it runs well so that will need sorting. The front calipers have been rebuilt and the motor has NRC case covers, Pro Tek aluminum clip ons also I installed a new battery last year.There is a small crack in the right front fairing and a small section of the clear coat is chipped on the tank cover, please refer to the pictures. This bike has been sitting for too long, I don’t ride it and it needs to go to a good home. This is a 30 year old bike, it has its quirks but saying that the FZR400 is an excellent handling motorcycle and a blast to ride.

I am including a FactoryPro carburetor recalibration kit, ignition advancer, nickel plated stock replacement emulsion tubes and transmission detent kit, the roller has been installed but not the spring.Thats over $500 in spares.

The bike has attracted little bidding activity with a few days left in the auction and the opening bid set pretty close to what we would expect the bike to be worth. It does come with a pile of interesting spares and has seen very few miles, but north of $3,000 sounds like a lot for a 30-year-old 400.

Ready to Rip: 1989 Yamaha FZR750RR OW01

Yet another spotless machine from Gary’s Utah collection, this 1989 Yamaha FZR750RR OW01 is the second of its kind from the collection that we have written about this year. Like the one before it, it is spotless, though it has a few more miles and is ready to ride, shod with a brand-new set of Michelin Pilots.

The bike is a Japanese-market example, and still shows the original home language stickers on its windshield. This example has been de-restricted, meaning it packs its full complement of 120-odd horses. The polished frame, red-white-blue bodywork and EXUP branded exhaust all show flawlessly, and the bike has traveled just north of 3,000 miles in its 28 years.

The fairings are the original pieces, though they have been resprayed in the stock colors along with the bike’s wheels. The seller says it runs beautifully and contains all new fluids.

The Yamaha OW01, also known as the FZR750RR, is a unicorn in any condition, with just 500 bikes spread over a three model-year run. They were more exclusive, marginally more powerful, and a big chunk more expensive than Honda’s genre-defining RC30.

Like the Honda they were up against, OWs won scads of races worldwide, including under American 500cc Gran Prix ace Eddie Lawson at Daytona. All that desirability, coupled with their extreme rarity, means they don’t show up for sale too often, much less two in the same place at the same time.

And yet, here we are. This English dealership has managed to score a brace of 1989 Yamaha FZR750RRs, one with black and white wheels, one with two black wheels. Both bikes appear to be in excellent shape, though the one with bi-color wheels has covered nearly 25,000 miles. The black-wheeled example has not yet cracked 5,000 and looks like the prize of the pair.

Buy the Pair: 1988 and 1990 Yamaha FZR400

The Yamaha FZR 400 is the kind of bike that manages to get ignored by wide swathes of the motorcycling population, but instill deep devotion in those who have discovered its fantastic chassis, sprightly engine and general friendliness.

That appears to have been the case here, as the seller has not one, but two FZR 400s, and from two different eras of the 14,000 RPM featherweight. The 1988 model has covered a few more miles,  but wears Yamaha’s iconic red and white livery and fantastic “pure sports” graphics. The 1990 is slightly lower mileage, but wears the still cool but not as pretty later livery.

FZR cognoscenti will also know that the ’90 should make the better rider’s bike and track day machine, as it has bigger, four-pot front discs and an aluminum Deltabox swingarm, as opposed to the older model’s square steel unit. Either bike will be a more engaging ride than the heavier, flexier, less-special FZR600 that was available at the same time.

With about 60 horses pushing about 400 pounds, the FZR400 is no slouch, especially for its size and its lovely inline four responds beautifully to revs.

Garish but Good: 1992 Yamaha FZR600 Vance and Hines

The 1992 Yamaha FZR600 Vance and Hines was little more than a garish factory-applied graphics package to celebrate the two manufacturers’ AMA Supersport partnership. We’ve covered a few of these things over the years, and I might be the only person on the RSBFS team who legitimately digs heinous ’90s graphics packages.

There is something so appropriately in-your-face about two heinously bright colors jammed together on a machine that was never designed to make you the Kiwanis Club’s favorite Eagle Scout. If you’re gonna be antisocial, you might as well be ugly and hard to miss.

This bike is number 331 out of 600 such machines made, and carries the de rigueur Vance and Hines exhaust system, along with the fairly rare Powerpak CDI box. The seller makes no mention of the CDI, or whether the bike has been jetted to accommodate the mods. If it has, it will positively scream. (Side note: I owned a standard ’90 FZR with this exhaust setup. Absolutely the loudest machine I have ever owned or ridden. Period.)

Vance and Hines 331 is in good shape, but has a scratched engine cases and needs its choke lever bolted back on. The seller lists a bunch of recent easy maintenance, so it should be a pretty reliable ride, even with the imperfections.

So I have been debating selling this for a while now. It just sits and is extra insurance costs. It is a 1992 Vance & Hines one of only 600 ever made. These are getting more and more rare all the time but because of the color maybe not as popular. Personally I think this screams early 90s and I love how it stands out. This is an excellent running machine and could be driven daily easily. This summer I have changed the oil, spark plugs, brake pads, brake fluid and radiator fluid. The carburetors have been run through recently cleaned and synchronized as well. The bike made 87 hp at the rear wheel which is unheard of for the year. It’s quite a great running bike. I have been paying way too much for insurance though as I love bikes too much. I have so many that this is just one I don’t use. The bad, well it has scratches on both sides of the engine not the plastic and the front fairing has cracks in it. Also the choke is not bolted on and it has a fan switch. So nothing major for a bike this old. When changing the spark plugs I checked everywhere and the engine is clean, spotless no leaks anywhere.

I have extra bar ends, the actual plastic that goes under seat, extra rear lights, the book and of course you can’t have this without the poster. 😉 I also have a video of this running on youtube I can share from last year.

The auction has seen little activity yet, and the starting bid is low enough to make this a great entry point into a bike that might not have the provenance of some of its peers, but will always be desirable to the right person.

Featured Listing: Low-mileage 1993 Yamaha FZR1000

This 1993 Yamaha FZR1000 from featured seller Gary is museum quality, having covered just 3,000 miles in its 24 years over two owners. The paint and 90s-tastic graphics are scratch, ding and mark free, which is nearly unheard of for a U.S.-market literbike of this vintage.

Gary’s FZR is from near the end of the bike’s eight-year production run, and features Yamaha’s innovative Exup system, which allowed Yamaha to run super aggressive cams without sacrificing a placid street idle, and gave the bike a smooth powerband from the bottom end to red line.

By 1993, the 145-horsepower FZR1000 was beginning to show its age, as the Honda CBR900RR was on its way to turn the literbike market on its head. Still, the line had managed to top comparison tests and ten-best lists for the previous few years, and left an indelible dent in perceptions of what sport bikes could be.

As a breed, the FZR1000 is not at all rare. They were made in their thousands and sold admirably in the U.S. market. What makes this bike special is the scant mileage, new condition and ownership history. It is original down to the brake pads, chain and sprockets, though if you’re going to ride it, we would suggest freshening those parts as well as the tires. The auction has just over a day left, so hurry past before the opportunity is gone!
