1993 Ducati 888 SPO For Sale on eBay!

Coming in on the heels of Mikes French Drama Lama 888 SP5/Strada is this Merica 888 SPO. This Ducati is certain to please WhyzeeF and Luke because this one lacks a LE number plate on the triple, but . . . it does have that pesky No 1 tail plate . . . Hmmmm. Oh! I know, that’s because Ducati won the WSB championship in 1992. They followed 92’s championship season up by winning both the WSBK and AMA Championships in 93′ with the 888. So, this number plate actually means something! 🙂

From the seller-

In case you are not aware 888SPO was sold only in the US market. The SPO was a combination of the high performance SP5 and the European- specification Strada. Apart from a different EPROM, the engine of the SPO was identical to the Starda. The SPO shared more with the SP5 when it came to the chassis. There were only 170 produced for the 1993 model year with another 120 equipped to meet California emissions. This is not a California example. There were another 100 released for 1994 with only a few cosmetic differences including a production number plate on the triple clamp.

This SPO presents well and for a good reason- It’s averaged around 400 miles a year since it crossed the pond. As the seller mentions, there were around 390 of these imported in 93′ and 94′. Not super low numbers by Italian manufacturers standards, but low enough to make them sought after and highly collectable. These have been slowly creeping up in price over the years and this one seems to be leading the way and pushing the envelope with a BIN price of $18,500. Year of the Duc: 1991 Ducati 851

Unsold at a significantly higher asking price earlier this year, this beautiful 851 has been relisted at $13,999 OBO. Links updated.

The year of 2021 needs to officially be renamed as the Year of the 851. I cannot recall ever seeing such an inventory of these milestone machines (check out a search of the RSBFS archives here). So what is so special about the 851? In a nutshell, the 851 contains 3 separate technologies that were a first for the Bologna manufacturer: 4-valve heads, fuel injection and liquid cooling. This combo kicked off a winning spree in WSBK and solidified Ducati’s approach of being a race team that occasionally builds street bikes. Today’s find is an exceptional 1991 model, which includes the popular white frame and wheel combination. I won’t go into the gory details of the model – check out the link above for that – but will simply remark that this is a well-represented version of this model and year.

Beautiful and well-maintained 1991 Ducati 851 Superbike for sale by owner. Have all of the original paperwork and maintenance records, as well as 2 original keys. Iconic and classic motorcycle in mint condition. The bike is all original parts and works flawlessly. Timing belt replacement and valve adjustment have both been done in the past few months. New tires were also fitted 6 months. Always kept indoors in a temperature controlled space. It hurts me to let go of this beautiful piece, but it is time to sell to someone who has the time to care for this motorcycle.

Today’s bike shows a few more miles than some of the museum want to be machines that we have seen previously, but it is obvious it has enjoyed some care and feeding deserving of the breed. Belts and valves are critical for this model, and both have been addressed recently. That means that this beauty is ready to ride off into the sunset right now. Both seat and windscreen look to be aftermarket, but neither should be considered deal killers. The rest looks to be completely stock, right down to the stock cans and stock clutch cover. The asking price on this one is a seemingly high $17,000 (now $13,999), but the seller is open to offers. 2008 Ducati D16RR Desmo For Sale on eBay!

It’s 2006 and Loris Capirossi and Sete Gibernau are the Ducati Factory MotoGP riders. You’re at the track watching them blast down the straights at 200mph and thinking “Man, I wish I had a machine like that!”. Reading your mind, an official from Bologna walks up and says “I can help you obtain the unobtainable.” Cautiously, you look around and ask yourself “Did I say that out loud or am I dreaming?”. Still cautious and unsure, you feel a startling tap on your shoulder. Mr Bologna repeats himself “I can help you obtain the unobtainable” Your reply is simply “Seriously? Where do I sign up?”. Mr Bologna points to Ducati Island and motions for you to follow him . . .

A signature, $72,500, a 24 month wait and the next thing you know- you’re throwing a leg over a 200hp, fire breathing, Italian Stallion D16RR Ducati MotoGP Racer Replica. Was it worth the wait? Well, truth be told, only 1500 people had to impatiently wait for their dealers to call and it’s safe to say Commonwealth didn’t have my number.

These are teenagers now and are starting to show their age . . . a little. The D16 looks a little bulbous when compared to today’s MotoGP machines, but in typical Ducati fashion, it looks fast sitting still and drips with motorcycle sexiness.

The Other Desmo: 1979 Ducati 900 Super Sport Darmah

Shout out to our returning resident writer for the spot on this one. Doug came across this 900 SSD and knew it was significant – but was too occupied redlining his 1990s memory lane exploits to write it up. Rock on with your neon pastels, Captain, I’m all too happy to step in and share one of the most rare Desmos you might find on the GoogleTubeBay!

The late 1970s were difficult for the Bologna brand. For while Ducati clearly made a name with their 750cc green frame Super Sport, winning races and generally being the upstart Italian in a decidedly Japanese technology buffet, showroom success continued to be elusive. Ducati attempted to enter the mainstream market with the 860 GT, but when that failed to chart they evolved it into the 900 Sport Darmah in 1977. A further evolution was created, known as the 900 Super Sport Darmah – or SSD – which is what you see here. A sharper version of the Sport Darmah, the SSD featured some engine enhancements for more power, the sport fairing, and lower clip-on bars. With relatively few Ducatis of this era making it to the US, and even fewer of the SSD variant being made at all, this is a bit of a unicorn of the bevel-drive set.

There is no doubt that the Bologna factory produces products that exude sex appeal. Ducatis have often been noted as performance artwork. Therefore it should be no surprise that Ducati farmed out some of the design to Italdesign studio and Giorgetto Giugiaro. Known for designing some of the most stunning automobiles in history, Giugiaro worked on sculpting….. the engine cases. Yes, such was the level of detail that went into this line.

At the end of the day, the Super Sport Darmah was too heavy to be a true sport bike, and too sporty to be a true tourer that the standard Darmah represented. Even the seller notes that the riding position is too aggressive for an older rider. Couple that with relatively slow sales for the brand, competition between the two Darmahs, and bigger competition from the far East, you have a very rarely seen example of a very special bevel. There is not a ton of info from the seller, and the pictures are relatively few. But if you are in the market for something distinctive – and distinctively 70s – this rare 1979 Ducati 900 Super Sport Darmah might just be for you. The Ducati Supersport line has been wildly successful for the Bologna manufacturer, and it is not difficult to see why. Based more on what is NOT there than what is, the Supersport is about agility and lightness. This is a bike that reduces riding to the raw level of man and machine, as opposed to man coddled by electro-mechanical machine. This is a booming, throbbing and visceral experience that is a class all unto its own. An amazing motorcycle because of what it isn’t, the Ducati Supersport remains a standout of the era, and a reminder of how good it is to get out and ride.

While the Supersport nomenclature had been around for decades in one form or another, it was the Pantah engine models that wear the “SS” designation. And rather thinking of the latter year Supersports as children of the bevel-era, old school Super Sport models, realize that this generation is much more closely related to the F1 and vaunted TT2 models – very good pedigree indeed. Out on the streets, riders quickly saw the potential for the “less is more” philosophy, and began to consider the 900 SS (especially the ’91-’98 models) as platforms to be enhanced and customized. I bought this girl off ebay about 4 years ago. Someone had done a crazy amount of work to her and then parked her. The family I bought it from said that the builder past away. When I got her she had the items listed below. The person who did the work did a GREAT job, everything was very well done. I also did a bunch of work over the years, see below. If I kept her I would…. Do nothing, just keep ridding her. It’s a great bike that flies between traffic, up mountains roads and commutes as well as my VFR. I’ve had over 12 900cc Ducati’s, I’m going to regret selling this one more than any other in the past.

Asking Price: $6000 obo

Today’s seller has listed several bikes on RSBFS in the past, and is a known entity. That always helps when considering a significant purchase. And from a cost standpoint, you could not build this hot rod at the price point being asked based on the parts installed and the cost of a suitable donor. That makes this a pretty good deal for a bike that has so much potential to please.

The term “Collector Alert” gets thrown around in various circles for cult classics, homologation bikes, and other up and coming motorcycles of interest. But beyond the hype, there are certain brands, certain bikes and certain creations that are blue chip. As time passes, there become fewer and fewer good examples of a certain age, until ultimately – usually due to parts availability – there become yet a handful left of truly exceptional examples of a model. This is especially true of older Ducatis, which did not have the mass production methods and large exportation networks cultivated by the Japanese. Here we find an icon of the early Ducati twin years, restored by experts with a solid reputation. In addition to the bike itself, the seller indicates over $30k USD was spent on the refurbishment of this beauty – and that is with their expertise, parts knowledge and availability and experience. Many original parts are either on the bike or included with the sale, and the seller is willing to help arrange shipping worldwide.

Bikes like this will only appreciate over time, so if you are in the market now is the best time to make a move. If you want the best and don’t have the inclination to break into Barber or the patience to wait for such a superlative example to make it’s way over the block at Christies or Bonhams, You really need to reach out to Brook over at Vee Two and have a chat. Affordable Classic: 1993 Ducati 900 Supersport

We have posted a few Ducati Supersports on RSBFS recently, and there is a good reason for it. As a rider, these are fantastic platforms that give you all the great Ducati vibes and good looks. They are not ultra-fast to be sure, nor are they ultra-refined in terms of creature comforts. These are very basic – and very good – motorcycles that involve the rider in the experience in a manner that few bikes accomplish. And if you are looking at a bike worth holding on to, either to continue to customize and modify with numerous available performance bits or to simply collect and watch it appreciate in value, the 900SS is an affordable entry and willing partner for either plan.

The Supersport is powered by yet another evolution of the wildly successful Pantah engine. Using toothed rubber belts to drive the 2-valve Desmo system (as opposed to the tower drive and bevel gears in earlier models), the Supersport throbs its way to 80-ish horsepower at the top end. And that top end is not like a Japanese inline four or even a Desmoquattro Superbike wind up rush. Instead, the air cooled twin prefers to ride the fat torque curve more in the middle of the rev range, where skilled riders can make use of the stiff trestle frame and 851 brakes to make swift progress indeed.

This era Ducati Supersport has much to recommend. Aside from the solid feel and quality construction, the 900SS enjoys a pleasing silhouette – the same which cannot really be said about the follow on design by Pierre Terblanche. The Pantah motor is relatively basic and utterly reliable. Service intervals are reasonable, and a semi-skilled home mechanic can certainly change the belts. Valve adjustments are a bit more tricky in that you need a number of shims on hand, but not beyond the realm of someone armed with calipers, some basic math skills and access to a shop that will sell you the shims you need. At worst the home mechanic can do the fluid service and belts at required intervals and have the local shop run the valves when needed. For exotic Italian exclusivity, ownership is not difficult in any meaningful way.

Today’s bike has traveled a reported 26,000 miles. That is quite a few, but nothing to be concerned about when it comes to longevity. In reality, the key failure point on a Pantah is related to failure to change the belts; with adequate service history this bike is only being broken in. Asking $5,800 in a Buy It Now format auction, this 900 Supersport is a decent buy. However you should compare and contrast with this 1995 Ducati 900 SSCR Featured Listing to see what that sum of money can buy you on the performance upgrade side. Stock (and looking untouched) in this format or performance-tuned in the case of the Featured Listing, you cannot go wrong with a Pantah-engined Ducati Supersport. Sport of Kings: 1991 Ducati 900 Supersport

The Pantah-powered Ducati 900SS is a stalwart icon in the sport bike world. Devoid of the sewing machine, turbine-like windup of the Japanese inline four competition, the air-cooled, two valve L-twin grunts and booms to a relatively low RPM redline, riding a wave of torque. The trellis chassis is stiff, aiding in handling. Ducati took a page from the dominant 851 and used some of the same components on the Supersport, such as the massive Brembo brakes. The riding position is not too extreme, and the whole package looks timeless. That is a good thing, given that by appearances the 900SS remained relatively unchanged over the model run from 1988 – 2000, even though some tech did change under the covers.

By the 1990s the Supersport had been solidly supplanted by the mighty 851, however the SS remained true to its original form and intent, providing a lightweight, torquey and simplified (read: raw) riding experience. There is not much in the way of creature comforts on these machines, and while the 80-ish HP is plenty of motivation, it is the lower RPM torque that really shines when riding. Gear selection becomes much less critical than on a two stroke or even a high-strung inline four, and driving off the corners is the Supersport’s forte.

I am relisting this due to an error in the listing on my part. 1991 Ducati 900 SS. This is the first yr for this bodystyle 900, and only yr w/white frame and wheels. It has all the features of the later model 900ss SP model. (Aluminum swingarm, 5.5″ rear wheel and adjustable forks). I bought it 10 yrs ago from the original owner and have put about 500 miles on it only riding to bike nights and shows. In my opinion, this was almost too nice to ride so I bought another and started gathering parts for this one.

Bike has never been down, painted on or damaged in any way. Upgrades include: Carbon fiber upswept exhaust, K&N air filter, Other Carbon Fiber parts include: Inner rear fender, Clutch cover, Belt covers, Dash surround and front fender. Also added preload adjusters for the forks, steering dampner and tinted windscreen. BIke has been rejetted for filter/pipes and runs perfectly. Also 41t rear sprocket. I also have a Corbin seat for it as well as a solo tail section that has been painted but never mounted and all removed stock bits. Valves adjusted <500 miles ago as well as replacing belts. They still look good but would recommend replacing them before riding much because of their age.

The seller claims a scant 4,960 miles on this beauty, which is a bit of shame. These are great bikes to ride, and as with most things mechanical regular usage helps to keep everything in working order. The seller does note some maintenance that has been completed, but readers should understand that cam belts on Ducatis are a time-based item just as much as miles. This bike does have some performance related farkles added on, which are all reasonably correct mods for the model. The rear sprocket is an especially beneficial upgrade; the factory gearing is way too tall to be useful on the street.

This listing was open for a period of time, and then it was pulled and relisted with the text noting corrections. There are double-digit bids already at the time of writing, and pricing is in the bargain basement territory. There is a reserve in place, so let’s see where this one takes us. The Ducati 900SS has the bones to be one of the all-time greats. It may not be as fast as later Superbikes, it may not be as exclusive as homologation machines, but it remains a fantastic platform and a capable dancing partner.
