Officially A Triple: 1992 Ducati 851

In the highly unlikely case that RSBFS readers are not aware, the Ducati 851 is a mere twin, not a triple. However in the “when it rains it pours” environment of rare motorcycles, today’s 1992 Ducati 851 is the third low mileage Strada we have seen (see HERE and HERE). This is certainly the feast part of “feast or famine” and means that if you are in the market for one of these iconic machines, then you have a surprising choice of available examples.

As oft recounted on these pages and elsewhere, the Ducati 851 was a triple threat of liquid cooling, four valve desmo heads and fuel injection. The result was a powerplant that paved the way to the legendary 916, and progressed Ducati further along winning ways at the racetrack. With 110HP above 9,000 RPM, the new 851 could rev like no other twin. And with Brembo brakes and Showa suspension connected to Bolgna’s best trellis frame to date, the 851 could handle like no other as well. The Strada was the the lowest spec 851 made available, yet was head and shoulders above anything Ducati had released to date.

Today’s example is a Strada – meaning the bi-posto or two-seater example. The seat cover removes via the ignition key, and passenger grab handles deploy from beneath. In all, a very trick setup for two-up riding on an otherwise solo looking tail section. The pipes are upswept in order to facilitate ground clearance, and it is unlikely you will be touching down hard parts unless shod with race rubber and in possession of superhuman talent.

With a claimed mere 1,601 miles on the triple Veglia white-faced gauge cluster, this is one of the cleanest, most stock examples of the 851 we have seen on these pages. It appears to be about as perfect as one could hope, and promises the next own a riding experience as if it was purchased new off of the showroom floor. The opening ask for this auction is $9,000. And while that is a fair amount of cash to start an auction, it is most certainly in line with the low end of what this bike is worth. That tells me that this isn’t a low dollar click bait to get people to bid, but rather a straightforward approach to selling the bike. Turn the world on its ear – 1992 Ducati 851

Ducati has quite the history of producing iconic, revolutionary models that were really large leaps in evolution. From the 1970s and the 750 SS with its stunning use of desmodromic valve actuation via a bevel drive arrangement, to the Pantah-engined bikes of the early 1980s with a new toothed rubber belt (which nobody thought would last), to the 851 of the late ’80s and early 90s. Each brought with it great steps in terms of design and efficiency, and each was a milestone in its own right. And each contributed to the rich racing heritage that surrounds the Ducati legend. Today we find a pristine 1992 851 Strada – a bike right before the cusp of the 888 refresh – that should tick all the boxes for anyone looking for one of these astounding beasts.

The magic of the 851 was a 1-2-3 abracadabra affair. Up to this point, all racing (and street going) bikes of the Bologna brand had the same basic engine characteristics: air cooling, two valve heads, and carbs. Ducati engineering (as funded by new owners, Cagiva) implemented Massimo Bordi’s university thesis of a 4-valve desmodromic head. The effort was aided by noted cylinder head specialist Cosworth, but retained Bordi’s basic design. The new head was affixed to an all new block which included liquid cooled cylinders to allow for tighter tolerances and more sustained high power and high RPM running. Fueling was provided by an all-new (and novel for the time) fuel injection system developed by Weber. The result was 110 HP at 9,500 RPM – figures unachievable by the earlier technology.

Selling my 1992 Ducati 851 Superbike. You don’t see them like this very often anymore. Almost 100% stock with the exception of Sil Moto 50mm full race exhaust, Ferracci chip and K&N filter. For a next-generation Superbike – one that was very successfully campaigned in WSBK – the 851 Strada is actually a pretty sensible motorcycle suitable for daily use. The cockpit is tidy and comfortable, if not a little cramped for bigger riders. The stretch to the clip-ons is modest, and the fuel injection ensures easy starts and idling. These models ride relatively easily in traffic, and even have a hidden passenger pillion, pegs and grab handles that emerge from under the seat – perfect for those two-up encounters! Maintenance is a little more involved than your average Japanese sewing machine, in that belts require regular replacement and valve adjustment is a bit more of a chore. If you can live with that, then the 851 is a bike that can fit into your life – and bring some raucous excitement to it as well.

today’s 1992 Ducati 851 example looks to be clean, clean, clean. It is an extremely low miles specimen, and appears to be in fully stock condition save for the beautiful carbon cans (I would guess that those things really give that desmoquattro a deep, biting sound) and the requisite upstream enhancements. The internets seem to agree with the assessment of this one, as the price is getting up there: a hair under $10k as of this writing, and the reserve still in place. It is not often that we see such a great example of this model, and with vaccinations and spring all showing up it would appear that the world wants to ride. Desired Duc: 1996 Ducati 900 SS/SP

An affordable way into collecting exotics that you can ride, the Ducati Supersport line is an approachable (and enjoyable) platform on which to begin your journey. Long known for being robust, reliable and a heck of a lot of fun, the Pantah-powered SS models are fairly basic motorcycles that deliver decent performance, great looks and a fantastic soundtrack – without breaking the bank. Today’s example is a 1996 Ducati 900SS SP – the higher spec (and more collectable) of the two seat Supersport models.

All Supersports of this era were very, very similar. While introduced with a white frame in 1991, by ’93-’94 all two seater models had a bronze-colored trellis frame, the same 900cc air-cooled, 2-valve Desmo engine with carburetion, a dry clutch and a six speed gearbox. There were a few variations in the line, including full or half fairing, factory carbon bits such as mudguard, adjustable front suspension, aluminum swing arm and wider rear tire. The bikes that had all the options were known as 900SS SP – or Sport Production models – and were affixed with a special headstock plaque indicating such. Think of these as a biposto 900 Superlight, so close are many of the specifications.

If not familiar with the SS/SP, some history.
The 1991 Supersports were produced with white chrome molybdenum steel frames and white wheels. The swingarms used needle bearings instead of bushings as in the past. Brakes from the Ducati 851 were used on the Supersport vastly improving braking performance. All new bodywork and a pivoting fuel tank were elegantly shaped.

There are few negatives to owning a Supersport. They offer a fair amount of mechanical noise, they vibrate and throb a bit, and the final gearing is very tall making for some interesting clutch work when in traffic. Clutch slave cylinders are usually the first components to fail; replacement is easy and aftermarket options are plentiful. Belt replacement and valve adjustment are probably the biggest deal – the belt change is not difficult on these air cooled motors but the need for shims might make finding a decent Ducati mechanic worthwhile. If you wish to do the work yourself, you will find these are relatively easy bikes to work on. There have been reports of the aluminum swing arm being prone to cracks; this is an area that should be carefully checked.

This very pretty 900SS SP has been housetrained and is looking for a new home. It has some minor mods (Termi cans, the solo tail section, and possibly the brake/clutch lines) but otherwise looks to be stock. It’s nice to see the complete list of what is being offered with the sale, including the original seat. The only real concern I would have is where to find a VHS player to view that Ducati tape! These have been on the cheap side of the market for a long time, but as the well-cared for examples are snapped up, the dwindling stock of good quality bikes will help drive the price curve. Bleautiful: 1988 Ducati Paso 750

Welcome to one of the most polarizing models in Ducati history. Perhaps second to only the 749/999 series, the Paso was a little bit like the un-Ducati. With full bodywork resembling more of a a monolithic, monochromatic sport tourer, the Paso took styling in an entirely new direction. Thankfully under the covers the DNA and performance of the F1 Pantah series remained, ensuring lots of lumpy, torquey goodness.

Strip away the Paso’s fully enclosed bodywork (purported to vent away engine heat in a controlled manner) and you would essentially be looking at a Ducati 750 F1 mill with a reversed rear (upright) cylinder head to allow for both barrels to breathe through an automotive-styled carb between the vee. This also simplified the rear exhaust routing somewhat, although the collector is a work of art. The chassis is not quite what you would expect from a company that built round-tube trellis frames for decades, but all covered up in bodywork you would never know the Paso is based on a square tubing cantilever arrangement utilizing the engine as a stressed member. And speaking of bodywork, you may note similarities between the Paso and the Bimota DB1 – after all, they were both the brain child of designer Massimo Tamburini. All in all, the package worked well, yet was a significant departure from the classic lines of pervious Ducatis. The Paso was loved fervently by some, while hated by others.

Excellent example of the Ducati that is credited for saving the brand from disappearing, desinged by Massimo Tamburini, the legend behind Bimota, Ducati and MV Agusta. Paso 750 is powered by 748 cc Desmodue engine, the same Pantah motor from the Ducati 750 F1. Engine starts easy, runs great without overheating or smoking. Originally powered by a Weber carburator which was often the cause of high engine temps especially in traffic, this Paso has been upgraded to a Keihin 39mm flat slide. It currently retains OEM exhaust but an upgrade to an aftermarket system will allow for much better breathing motor.

The heads have been upgraded to M750 which increase the valve adjustment intervals while offering improved valve guides as the originals had a tendency to wear out rather quickly. The cam belts were replaced approximately 3 years ago and the valves were adjusted at the same time. There is around 2600 miles on the oil and filter. All lights and signals as well as the horn work perfect. Even the clock!

The front forks with anti-dive technology were very advanced for their time. Swing arm is lightweight alloy with concentric chain adjuster. This Paso rides on factory original Marvic aluminum wheels, tires have around 3500 miles but still have plenty of thread and perform fine in the canyons.

More from the seller:
Factory blue color is a rare find for a Paso, with some sources claiming only 50 or so were painted in this color. This Paso has been completely refinished by previous owner with correct decals applied and cleared over to prevent them from fading or pealing. Bike looks like new!

Keep in mind this is a 33 year old bike and it will have few quirks and needs. The fuel gauge works but it tends to bounce a bit, especially if the fuel level is at or below half mark. There is a very minor oil leak coming from what appears to be an oil pan gasket. Due to the conversion to Keihin flat slide, the choke has been disconnected.

Sold with a clean California title. Registration is expiring on 3/10/21 and was changed to non-operational to avoid any back fees. The Paso is sold “as is, where is”. In case of shipping, it will be responsibility of the buyer. I will work with the shipper to accomodate their time schedule. Please make arrangements and ask questions before buying.

The Paso offered here is a great combination of updated pricey mechanical components and cosmetic refresh. The motor is a very desireable Pantah mill that is gaining traction with the collectors. It is rare, it is cool and its very fun bike to ride. Overall this motorcycle is an inexpensive entry into vintage Ducati world!

The Paso lineup has yet to see the light of day when it comes to collectors and appreciating values. With 35 years gone since introduction, there are signs that some of that reticence is beginning to change. To find an exceptionally clean and original anything 33 years later makes it more rare than the day it rolled off the showroom floor. And sadly many of these models – after dropping in value – fell into the hands of those who could not (or would not) give them the care and maintenance they deserved.

To be clear, this particular Paso is not strictly a bone-stock example. The seller does a good job outlining the mods made, and the switch from the stock Weber carb is a popular one (Ducati eventually introduced fuel injection in later models), although pictures of the carb throat sans filter make me nervous. The rest of the bike looks used but clean, and readers should note that it has travelled nearly 24,000 miles. Mileage is not an issue with these models provided proper maintenance has been adhered to, but if you are seeking a zero mile bike look elsewhere. New-ish Old School: 1986 Ducati 750 F1

The Ducati 750 F1 is about as old school cool as you can get. Devoid of any wizardry found on more modern motorcycles, the F1 is a basic bare-knuckle brawler with fancy footwork. To call this a race bike for the street would certainly be accurate, given the underlying DNA came directly from the factory TT1 and TT2 racers. Sporting a similar trellis frame and utilizing a Pantah-era engine punched out to 748cc that were both first utilized in the TT1 racer, the F1 offers a no-nonsense riding experience that is raw and pure.

Both the TT1 and the TT2 racers were effective weapons at such iconic places as the Isle of Man. The F1 followed in those footsteps – such that there were three “special edition” models of the bike named after famous racing circuits such as Montjuich (Spain), Stanta Monica (Italy) and Laguna Seca (United States). With about 70 HP on tap, the F1 was not so much a rocket ship as an adequately fast – but extremely nimble – racing sled. With no anti-lock brakes, no anti-wheelie control, no anti-stall device, no traction control and no quick shifter, this relic is missing everything that helps make racing motorcycles fast today. But what remains is the essence of motorcycling, distilled down to only what needs to be there. Creature comforts? Sorry, not on this bike. If it doesn’t make you faster or the bike lighter, it simply isn’t there. THAT is the beauty of the F1 series, in a nutshell.

Selling one of my 750 F1’s, bike got a new paint job, new belts, overall in great shape. Comes with set of original turn signals and a few more parts. Was last on the street probably 20 years ago when I bought it, see manufacturing date from tires. I had the bike for 3 years and only rode it twice, restored it to what you see and now selling it. Needs new tires and the turn signals which I installed are not connected yet, everything else works and bike starts cold and warm very well. The last 4 pictures show the bike as it looked when I got it, from the original ad when I bought the bike: “Rare 1986 Ducati F1B. The seller is correct in that we at RSBFS have seen a lot of these F1 machines (and more specialized variants) posted on these pages. In fact, this exact bike graced our pages in its earlier tricolore guise back in 2017. Comments were not kind regarding the butchered paint job, and this seller has done a great job restoring the livery to former glory. Here is a link to find other F1s on RSBFS. Researching older posts offers a great way to learn more about the model, but can also help describe the rough historical value of these models over time. Those serious about a bike such as this F1 would be well advised to do their homework.

This particular example looks pretty good in the pictures. It shows a nicely painted F1 in the standard Italian tricolore scheme. Mileage is low (4,200 claimed), however given that this bike had been raced it is possible that the speedo drive has been disconnected at some point in its life. There appear to be other minor foibles that may need to be sorted here as well. Sharp eyes will also spot some non-stock additions, including modifications to the left-side lowers as well as the tail section. But such is the nature of a 35 year old racer that aspired to be a street bike. There is no claim of “all original, zero miles” here, and the seller has been open about the efforts undertaken to bring this classic back to the status it deserves. Bidders have agreed, with decent traffic and action up to $7,300 at the time of writing. Quite a few watchers are standing by, so expect a lot more bidding once the reserve has been met. Classic Vinyl: 1993 Ducati 900 Superlight #681

The move from analog to digital in the audio world brought with it clarity, reliability and portability. Many things now became possible, including loss-less copies, sharing and remote delivery. What was lost was not immediately clear – but soon became recognized as fidelity. As rudimentary and basic as it was, analog audio had tone; it had feeling and soul. The Ducati Superlight was a LOT like analog audio – it was bested in many categories of performance, reliability and value, but delivers a tonal note and visceral feel unlike anything more modern. The Ducati 900 SS Superlight is a rare and special bike that continues to be a collector – and rider – favorite.

Starting out life as a plain Jane 900 Supersport, the Superlight brings a number of unique tricks to the party. First off, the SL is based on the higher spec SP model, which offers adjustable front suspension and wider rear wheel/tire combination. The Superlight adds to that by reducing weight through carbon fiber front and rear mud guards and very special composite Mavic wheels. The bodywork is different than more ordinary Supersport models as the solo tail section hints at the focused sporting intent of the model, as does the high-swept exhaust. The Superlight essentially offers more by providing less. Wrapped in an exclusive white frame/yellow bodywork livery and uniquely numbered ID plaque on the headstock, the limited edition Superlight is instantly recognizable and very bankable.

Today’s bike is about as clean and low mileage as any Superlight we have ever seen. With just over 1,100 miles on the clock it has obviously been ridden, but the miles are low enough for this to be considered a nearly new motorcycle. And while some readers may have negative thoughts on people who don’t ride their bikes tens of thousands of miles, the seller is obviously a collector and has many, many motorcycles. It is always thrilling to discover someone who has a cache of unicorns, and if you are a regular reader you will start to see how extensive this individual’s collection might be (spoiler alert – there is more great stuff to come).

This bike looks to be very original, with the exception of the FBF carbon fiber cans. These are very period correct, and I’m sure really add to the legitimate L-twin soundtrack. The rest of the bike looks to be extremely clean and *exactly* what you would look for if you were in the market for a Superlight (and let’s be honest, who isn’t?!). Social Media Star: 2001 Ducati MH900e

The Ducati MH900e was an internet sensation when it dropped on the Google-Tube in the magical year 2000. Designed as a futuristic homage to the Mike Hailwood replicas of the past – but devoid of the Hailwood name in order to avoid royalty payments (later paid to the family retroactively) – the Evoluzion is perhaps Pierre Terblance’s best known design. Today this bike still looks amazing and modern, despite a couple of decades having passed. This bike continues to make a statement to the riding public. Sadly, many of these bikes were not ridden, but instead hoarded away as collector machines. And while museum pieces allow future generations to adore old-new motorcycles, it subsequently robs the current generation of the pleasure of riding. It also tends to drive the prices up, which we are seeing here.

In many ways, the MHe accomplishes a fine steak dinner outcome starting with cheeseburger basics. At the end of the day you might just see a plain-Jane air cooled Supersport under all of that fancy dress. But oh, such a fancy dress it is! From the gorgeous asymmetrical swingarm that is art in and of itself, to the high-rise shotgun exhaust sticking out the tail section, to the totally-unique-to-this-model bodywork that is both cutting edge and retro, the MHe screams style. And thanks to evolutionary updates to the redoubtable desmodue twin, torque is abundant and outright power is adequate. In all, you take what has already worked for the past 20 years, and make it look newer and edgier. And it works astoundingly well, even today.

The Ducati MH900e was produced between 2001 and 2002 as an homage to Mark Hailwood’s race at the Island of Man TT in 1978. The MH900e was designed by none other than Pierre Terblanche who made a special visit to the Larz Anderson Auto Museum shortly after the creation of this now rare, limited production motorcycle, for the landmark Art and Design of an Italian Motorcycle talk. There is a time in nearly every collector bike’s lifetime when it can be had for sticker. Often, a few years from new, it can be had for less than sticker. Then – if the bike is desirable enough and rare enough and in demand – prices will rise. I can already hear the “I remember when you could buy one of these for $10-12k” comments in the making. Sadly those days are gone, and prices have been steadily climbing. This seller is asking for a very steep $25k minimum for this almost new (10 miles claimed, never registered) beauty. And look at the pics – it has been well taken care of in a “I’ll never ride it but just look at it” sort of way. I congratulate people that can do that. I am simply not that strong.

The collector market continues to be strong for MH900e models; these are all individually numbered, and the production run was limited to just 2000 bikes across 3 or so years. A fun fact is that Bimota was tagged to build these bikes, but thanks to the vDue implosion and subsequent Bimota bankruptcy, Ducati was forced to build it themselves. Hand-built in Bologna, the MHe was announced in late 1999 as a 2000 model, while actual production started in 2001. These are interesting, if not uncomfortable, sport bikes that have a pretty stout following and a strong based of demand. We do see them for sale from time to time, but it is rare to find such a low mileage, one owner example. Multinational: 1990 Ducati 851 SP2 in Germany

Before the flames start, let me warn you: This bike has little info and few pictures. So why bother to post it here on RSBFS? Simply because the Ducati 851 SP2 is a noteworthy collector machine. Having achieved success in WSBK with the original 851, Ducati punched out the older mill to 888cc, made a few other tweaks, and continued to rack up victories and championships. The homologation machine for the initial 888cc variant was the 851 SP2, which ran the larger power plant under the 851 covers, ahead of the official release of the new 888. All clear? Like all “R” spec bikes, the SP2 is uniquely identified via a numbered plaque attached to the upper triple trees. This Italian wunderkind is currently located in Deutschland.

Pictures are few and decided low resolution, but do show the important bits. The white frame and white wheels are correct, as is the solo tail section. From the right side in the dark at a distance the bodywork looks to be complete and the paintwork intact. The second picture shows the numbered series plate, the adjustable front suspension and an odometer that reads just over 22,000 KM (13,500-ish in miles). Unfortunately, that is it – except for the $45,000 USD ask. That’s right: fork over forty five really big bills and this can be yours. Interested parties are welcome to make an offer below that, but the seller has set the expectation high indeed.
