Ducati’s two-valve engine variants have long been seen as the affordable, low-performance option for novice or “mature” riders and bikes far from the leading edge of performance. Which makes the choice of an air and oil-cooled Ducati Sport Classic as the foundation for a high-performance racing machine like this highly-developed example pretty surprising.

When the liquid-cooled, four-valve Desmoquattro engine was introduced, it instantly relegated the original Pantah engine and its descendants to second-tier status. But in the early 1980s, the oil and air-cooled two-valve v-twin, newly updated with toothed rubber belts to drive the single overhead cams instead of the classic tower shafts and bevel gears, it was their only engine and, as such, it was developed with competition in mind. The main point here being that you shouldn’t dismiss it as a racing powerplant simply because its been surpassed in terms of outright performance.

The Ducati’s Sport Classic line might not have offered up Superbike power-to-weight ratios, but the engine’s durability and the frame’s inherent rightness mean that you can build a pretty competitive machine out of one, assuming you find the right class in which to participate.

The 992cc original engine might be torque-rich and involving, but in order to be competitive, this one has been punched out to a little over 1200cc with a raft of NCR components. The result is a claimed 140hp at the rear wheel, up from 92 in the original.

If you’re not interested in competing on the bleeding edge, either because of the exorbitant costs involved, or simply lack the talent possessed by only a handful of riders worldwide able to to compete at the highest levels and win , this might provide you with a more budget-friendly option, although it’s still pretty far from cheap, at $54,000.

Looking at that list of go-fast goodies, it’s pretty clear that no expense was spared in building this thundering v-twin racebike. 140 rwhp is nothing to scoff at, especially given the bike’s probable weight: a new Paul Smart weighed in at around 414lbs dry so this one should be a good chunk less without all the lighting and other road gear. And that’s before you even get into lightweight parts that decorate this machine. It’s all top-shelf, and a ridiculous amount of money to throw at an obsolete v-twin sportbike, but if I were a rich guy, it’s exactly the kind of track day toy I’d want in my garage. Liquid-cooled Ducatis might be faster, but I still think that the air-cooled two-valve engines sound much better, and the punchy midrange, here amplified to epic levels, should provide plenty of entertainment for experienced track day riders and racers alike.

Much as Moto Guzzi’s purchase by the Piaggio Group saved the company from possible [likely?] extinction, it also doomed any chance that a new superbike to compete with Ducati or Aprilia would see the light of day. And one did reach the prototype stage, with a narrower-angle, longitudinally-mounted [I will die on that hill] v-twin that improved cornering clearance, with liquid-cooling, four valves, and a chain final-drive. So for the foreseeable future, today’s Featured Listing Moto Guzzi MGS-01 is the closest we will get to a true sportbike from Mandello del Lario.

With no headlight or signals and just a mesh screen covering the air scoop that led to an oil cooler, it’s pretty obvious that the original MGS-01 Corsa is a track-only machine. A roadgoing “Strada” version was supposed to follow, but unfortunately never materialized. In spite of a design that dates back to the early 2000s, the lack of bodywork and unnecessary stylistic flourishes mean it’s aged well and the bike looks very spartan and purposeful.

It’s quite obviously based around the standard Moto Guzzi Daytona powertrain that uses the air-cooled, four-valve “high cam” engine, the V11 Sport’s six-speed box, and shaft drive. But beyond that, it’s had a raft of high-performance parts thrown at it and is stripped to the bare minimum to save precious pounds, and lacks any sort of road-legal lighting. New internals took displacement out to 1225cc and the updated mill was good for 122hp and a staggering 82 lb-ft of torque.

Period reviews of the Corsa were very flattering, with the usual caveat that it wasn’t really light or powerful enough to compete directly with the likes of something like a Ducati 999 in Superbike racing when it was new. So, aside from a couple of race series that catered to big, air-cooled twins, it was really just a very expensive track-day toy. These days, it does fit within the rules for several AHRMA classes, so well-heeled contrarian racers can fly the flag for Moto Guzzi and mix it up with other unconventional sportbikes, as the owner of this example appears to have done.

From the Seller: 2006 Moto Guzzi MGS-01 Corsa for Sale

One of approximately 120 produced between 2004 and 2006. The model was an absolute show stopper at Intermot 2002.Unfortunately, the model only saw a short production run prior to the takeover of Moto Guzzi by Piaggio and was ended soon after. This example was originally delivered in Italy where it saw about 750km of track use and was imported to the US in 2014 by its current owner under a racing exclusion with the EPA which is a bit of a process. The MGS-01 Corsa model was produced for racing use only cannot be legally registered for street use in the US under any circumstances with a hefty penalty if it ever gets the VIN run through. The characteristics of the bike are those of a Hot Rod fused with a race bike. It’s obvious weight number of 420 lbs. disappears once it is rolling and is amazingly nimble. Thanks to the tireless development of the racing program for many years including that by Dr. John Wittner, the disadvantages of having a shaft drive vs a chain drive was virtually eliminated by design of the rear of the bike. The handling is that of a proper racing machine in all aspects. Power is linear from near idle to 8000 RPM’s with torque that lets you pick a gear to suit, showing that a lack of ability to make gearing choices is not an issue. If one chooses to race the bike as its current owner has on occasion, it is a perfect fit for the “Battle of the Twins” class in AHRMA where air-cooled bikes only compete. It also fits in the AHRMA “Sound of Thunder 2” competing with the likes of Ducati 848’s triumph 675’s etc. For the collector only for display, please be aware that the bike as it has a couple of flaws from being used, but is still brilliant and original in it’s overall condition. It has never been down or off track or in the rain, just a mark on the tank cover and a small tear in the seat foam as shown from being bumped off the stand and hitting a toolbox. It also has a small crack at the base of the windscreen which is concealed by the Moto Guzzi decal in the photo. It currently has a Trans Logic servo push button shift unit as the current owner has trouble shifting the bike due to limited foot movement, which is why he is reluctantly selling it. The unit will be removed and no wiring has been cut or modified. Everything is in perfect working order and comes with Michelin EVO Slicks that were fresh at Barber in October 2018 with one practice day on them. The current owner has logged another 750km since 2014. Delivery within a reasonable distance of Southeastern PA can be arranged.

Considering Guzzi’s current status as a “heritage brand” for the Piaggio Group, it’s amazing that these attract so much attention when they come up for sale. Unusually, this one has been modified to suit the owner and has seen some actual racing, which means it’s not completely pristine, but Guzzis are famously durable and a bit of patina adds character. It also means the bike will spared the fate of so many collectible sportbikes, doomed to sit and slowly decay. As the seller mentions, very few bikes were produced, with as few as 50 originally sent to the US to compete in the AMA’s Battle of the Twins series that allowed larger air-cooled twins to compete or, more commonly, to be used as track-day toys or the aforementioned display pieces.

A Pair of Kawasaki ZX7RR Muzzy Raptors for Sale

If you replace or heavily modify every single component of a motorcycle, does it become something entirely new? That’s kind of the philosophy at work behind the Muzzy Raptor, a thoroughly massaged version of Kawasaki’s ZX7RR built by tuner extraordinaire, Rob Muzzy. That might sound like the stage name of an 80s glam rocker, and “Raptor” could definitely be the name of a hair-metal band, but Rob Muzzy’s memorable moniker is outshined only by his incredible racing successes in both AMA and World Superbike.

Muzzy basically disassembled a brand-new Kawasaki ZX-7Rs and rebuilt it from the ground up to build each Raptor, using top-shelf suspension and engine internals, including gear-driven camshafts. Various exotic options were available, including adjustable steering heads and swingarm pivots, along with a very slick, 916-esque single-sided swingarm. The Formula USA class or “FUSA,” required that a minimum of fifty road-going examples be built. Muzzy probably didn’t build quite enough Raptors to qualify, but it seems no one complained too loudly.

Roadbikes displaced either 750 or 850cc, although this pair of competition machines appear to be fitted with 800 and 750cc motors, presumably to meet race class requirements. Both engines have been heavily massaged, with the aforementioned gear-driven cams, and you can see the Öhlins forks and AP six piston front calipers for handling to match the power.

Twin Muzzy Raptor FUSA Race bikes. These were ridden by Dave Sadowski in FUSA and owned by a privateer. He made a deal with Muzzy to allow Sadowski to run the bikes at several FUSA events. Raptors have gear drive cams, gear drive oil pumps, billet crank, 800cc, with many World Superbike parts, custom pistons, valves, rods… you name it, they have it! One bike currently has the 800 motor, the other bike (with body off) has 1998 Doug Chandler 750 AMA motor. Spare freshly serviced 800 motor comes with bikes. Have all paper work to verify bikes and 750 motor from Muzzy.

  • Spare 800 motor that was freshened by Muzzy with 0 time on it. All motors Tuned/maintained by Vic Vasola. Motors were sent back to Muzzy or direct to Vic ever 2 race weekends.

I also have a 1997 ZX7RR street bike in pieces, all body work freshly painted by Sean Lezott of Connecticut Cycle Refinishing.

Hilariously, the bikes are claimed to come with Pennsylvania titles, so I’m guessing that you could theoretically convert them back to road use, assuming you live someplace with a permissive DMV. The Buy It Now price for the package is $39,995. For that price you get a pair of racing motorcycles and a boatload of spares, including bodywork and engines and, as the seller says, enough to use the bikes in anger. Considering the raw materials in this package, that seems like a good deal for someone looking for race-ready bikes or some very serious track day machinery.

So you’ve been badly bitten by the track-day bug, and you want something that will really teach you to go faster, something you can beat the living hell out of and it will just ask, “Please sir, can I have some more?” Or maybe you’ve decided that track days just aren’t enough, and you want to go racing. But not being a 16 year old kid with delusions of immortality and a boatload of cash to build a competitive Supersport machine, you need something cheap to buy, simple to run, and easy to maintain. You may not impress your riding buddies, but you can’t beat something like this Yamaha TZ450 single for riding thrills.

Now right now, you’re probably thinking, “But Yamaha never built a TZ450.”

No they didn’t. But in the past few years, it’s become popular to use off-road engines and even whole motorcycles as the basis for lightweight track machines. The formula is simple: take a stock dirt bike engine, frame, and swingarm, add a modern sportbike front end or modify the existing forks, rear shock, add rearsets and bodywork. Companies like Roland Sands Design and GP Tech sell kits to help you along, or can even build you a complete machine.

Finished machines have a dry-weight of about 250lbs. It’s a nearly perfect package for track junkies, with easy parts availability, a flexible powerband, and extreme light weight. All-in, if you build it yourself? Under $5,000, plus your time and effort.

Or you can just buy a bike someone else built. Maybe one that features the race-winning prowess of Yamaha’s GP-framed TZ250, stuffed full of thumper torque.

You could certainly build your own for cheaper, but obviously this is a bit of a step up from a converted dirt bike and features some very trick bits, along with geometry honed in the crucible of racing. Also it’s pretty cool to have a TZ with a big single stuffed into it.

Earlier this summer, I spoke with a guy who ran a MZ Skorpion Sport in AHRMA’s Sound of Singles series who told me, “I’ve been riding for years, but the Skorpion is the bike that taught me to go fast.” Learning to ride something light that stresses handling over straight-line speed really is the best route to really fast riding. They don’t stick budding racers on Superbikes and hope for the best. Those kids have generally spent years on small, lightweight machines that teach them more than “get the bike upright, twist the throttle to the stop, and hang on.”

This bike sounds like just the ticket to faster, safer riding!

Collection completer?  Restored 1980 Yamaha TZ125G

Did I say these were rare when I posted the 94 TZ125 the other day?  Well they are, I just look like a fool for finding two in a row.  They are separated by enough years that they are totally different kinds of bikes.  While the 94 was perfect for the track and this one might be nice enough to finish off a Yamaha collection.

Water cooled engine’s were pretty high tech back in 1980.  I’m always impressed with spotless two stroke engines.  They are fun but they aren’t the cleanest things.

What you want to know:

You are looking at one used 1980 Yamaha TZ125G road race bike. Water-cooled, 125cc single cylinder two stroke engine with Mikuni 38mm carb, that is very similar to the YZ125 engine. S/N on frame and engine match: 3V3-000411. This bike was raced in the northeast for 3 years and then stored as the owner moved up to bigger bikes. The bike was restored in 1999. The engine was rebuilt and the bike was painted with a pearlescent paint, new racing compound tires were installed. The bike was started once in 1999 when I bought it. It has been displayed since then and is in excellent condition with one chip of paint missing from the tail section (one of those silly wooden plaques that we race around for fell off a shelf!). It would round out any serious Yamaha TZ collection and comes with a nice list of spares if you want to go vintage racing. As with all racing bikes that are not street legal, there is no title just a bill of sale. Sold as is, no refunds or returns.

This TZ250A comes to us from the same seller who is parting with his RG500.  They appear to be liquidating quite the desirable motorcycle collection and I wouldn’t hesitate adding them to your favorite sellers list.

This TZ250 has been completely gone through with a fresh engine rebuild, new bodywork/paint, NOS rear shock, redone expansion chambers and a redone tank.  A small spares package is included.  This A model looks perfect with it’s wire wheels and large disc breaks, which were changed for discs on the C variant.  This should definitely be considered if you’re looking for a TZ to vintage race or just add to the collection.  See the other TZ250’s that have crossed our desks here.  See this bike on eBay with a $10k opening bid.

This past May 1st and 2nd, some of the authors for RSBFS attended the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association national meet at Portland International Raceway.  This was the first time AHRMA held a national event in our part of the country and from the looks of things it was a resounding success!  Being at PIR, the focus of the event was on road racing, but MX had a very strong presence along with scooter races, stunt riders, vendor booths and a small swap meet.

AHMRA PIR 2010

The pro-pit’s were awash with things to drool over and fantasize about;  Everything from angry two-strokes to Harley’s were present and racing!  A large number of racers made it out to thrash their vintage machinery with the CB160 race group making up the largest group with twenty plus riders.  Their Le Mans style start and large group made for, easily, the most entertaining group of the weekend.  Two-stroke fours, triples, twins and singles were  present and abundant with the usual dominating presence of the four-strokes.  Doug Polen (WSB, AMA, & Endurance World Champion) was also present and instructing students through his 1ON1 riding school.

AHMRA PIR 2010

The MX track featured pre-’80 bikes, a license plate and lights group, minibikes, a 40+ group, and large displacement thumpers.  The groups were large and dirty with no one seeming to hold back.  The scooter races consisted of somewhat normal looking scooters that sounded like highly strung road-racers and went nearly as quick.  Then vendors booths were nice and featured some quality items but, the swap meet I found severely lacking in attendance however, that can probably be attributed to this being the first time AHRMA has held an event like this so the knowledge base was too small to generate a large swap meet.

AHMRA PIR 2010

The crowds were decently sized which was very surprising based on the, usual, lack of turn-out for motor sports in the Pacific Northwest.  Competitors and fans were also from all reaches of Canada and the U.S. with visitors from both countries East Coast.  Canada had a very strong presence because of it’s close proximity and this fact probably contributed to the strong two stroke numbers.

The weather was adequate but, not the best.  It never rained, while I was there, but it threatened to and you could see it struck some fear into the competitors as the rims shod in wet’s were out on display and not hidden away.  The temperature was cool throughout the day but it was nice not having a large fluctuation from morning to afternoon as it consistently held in the mid 60’s throughout the weekend.

We did get to catch up with a fellow RSBFS reader and old friend, Brian who brought out his classic 1953 BMW R51/3 from Seattle. Here’s a couple of pictures and a bit about his bike:

It’s a 1953 R51/3 the high points are the Hoske tank that people asked about, but it also has Hoske muffler, the carbs are 30mm Dellorto SS1, standard carbs for this bike are 22 or 24mm. the rear seat is called a swinging pillion, an accessory they offered for their sports models R68 and R69S.

1952 bikes started with a pre-war half width hub, mine has the full width hub. When I took the heads off there were oversized pistons as well so I sometimes say its a 550cc bike the headlight bucket is by Rauch, mine has two holes and the 3 hole one is the one that went for $10k ebay listing. (!)

The bathrooms didn’t smell too great and the beer was expensive but, the racing was good and there was plenty to enjoy on, and off, the track.  If you ever see the AHRMA banner at your local track, make sure and have a visit–and always remember to support local motor sport!  A big thank you goes out to AHRMA, all the sponsors, organizers, and especially the volunteers for a great weekend and a great show!
