At a glance, this 2009 Ducati/Pierobon Hybrid Air-Cooled Racebike might look like a 1098 with track bodywork, but it’s much more than that. First of all, it’s running a two-valve engine from a Hypermotard 1100 Evo built to make 135hp instead of the four-valve, liquid-cooled engine you’d find in the standard 1098, although it’s been detuned slightly to 125hp for reliability. But that’s not the trick part. It’s that frame, that stunning frame peeking out from behind the bodywork. If you’ve never heard of Pierobon, they make achingly gorgeous parts for Ducati racebikes, including that company’s own World Superbike and MotoGP teams. Frames, subframes, swingarms, and even kit bikes just waiting for your choice of engine. They even make a frame for the frameless v-twin Panigale, in case you find the stock bike’s handling too vague…

It isn’t stated explicitly that this bike uses Pierobon’s all-aluminum 1098 superbike frame, but there’s no reason they’d refer to the bike as a Ducati/Pierobon hybrid or be asking $35,000 for a two-valve Ducati engine stuffed into a standard 1098 frame. And, looking closer, you can see the gorgeous detailing on that machined aluminum frame. Make no mistake, this bike should be an absolute riot to ride: 125hp may not sound impressive, but a two-valve Ducati should provide oodles of torque and amazing flexibility. Most importantly, the Pierobon 1098 frame weighs significantly less than the stock item, and Pierobon-powered Ducati specials can weigh as little as 300lbs fully fueled. Overall, a very trick, very expensive track day toy for well-heeled riders.
