Motivated to sell. Price update: $2,900.
For many, motorcycles take on a character of their own. Sometimes they are a representation of the owner, and a rolling expression of what is important to them. Other times they personify themselves with attributes of the manufacturing country. Even people that do not know much about motorcycles are not shocked when they come across a Ducati, and find out it is made in Italy. It just makes sense. In the case of the MZ many are surprised to hear they hail from the same country that brought us the BMW.
The name of the game here is simplicity. The end result is a beautiful machine that often goes overlooked. Most do not know what it is, fewer have seen one in person, and fewer still have had the opportunity to ride and experience one. Those that have sing the praises.
It is very easy to see why those that have been lucky enough to have sampled these bikes have plenty of positive things to say. The owner groups are active for support from many knowledgeable people with a passion for rare motorcycles. One does not casually end up with a bike like this, it is a conscience choice. One part of the appeal is the rarity and interesting engineering, but the other is the simple and affordable service cost combined with an approachable and reliable ownership experience.

The Skorpion Tour is a German brand powered by a 600 cc engine and 5 speed transmission both from Yamaha. MZ puts the power at 58 hp and 35 ft lbs torque. Its lightness at 382 lbs dry and a fairly steep steering rake, provides a sporty ride. As far as I know it’s pretty much stock with a couple minor exceptions.
MZ has quite the storied history that I won’t bore you with now but the book “Stealing Speed” provides a great description.
This bike is a real piece of history and when they were first introduced, they were celebrated as simple and built for handling – super fun.
To my knowledge the only thing that it needs is new tires due to age. Some of the wiring could use a cleanup but it’s functional as is.
