Anyone that has been around the motorcycle community for more than a few days can figure out how desirable some of the Ducati models can be. It is easy to understand why the R models command respect and large checkbooks. The connection to the racing bikes is more than just a marketing ploy. Homologation rules dictate the need for manufacturers to offer these amazing machines to us mortals. The other thing that does not take a newcomer to the hobby long to figure out is that there is no lack of options these days for lust worthy motorcycles. Here at RSBFS we often feature slightly older bikes than the Ducati here today. But the SP line from Ducati is particularly interesting, and worth a conversation, if not a purchase.
A few years ago, Ducati started offering a new line of motorcycles, the Superleggera. These were marketed as a “no rules” version of their top tier R models. Ultra low production coupled with stratospheric pricing was a recipe for instant collectability. These bikes featured massive power numbers, staggeringly low weight and just oozed appeal. Basically offered at the end of a production run for a specific architecture, these were no available every year. But then Ducati quietly did something incredible, they started making SP bikes.

It seems that the marketing for Ducati made a rare mistake, and slightly dropped the ball. Was the SP just an appearance package to celebrate the MotoGP winter livery? Was it a toned down Superleggera? A new name for the R line? Did any of this matter?
Well Yes and No to everything.
Even the must cynical of reviewers couldn’t call 220+ horsepower a turned down anything. Carbon wheels, wild wings and the sounds of the Gods being emitted from the Akropivich exhaust meant this was something that should not be ignored.
To date Ducati has done an SP and an SP2 version. Both are based on the V4 Panigale. They are not limited to 1000cc, like the R, but also feature the iconic dry clutch. The bike is a sensory overload.
It is not uncommon for these bikes to have new sticker prices of over $50,000 once upgrades and options are added on. That is a hard pill for many motorcycle riders to swallow. But in car terms, it is the cost of nicely optioned mini van these days!
The bike featured today is a 2023 model, and has depreciated a bit already, so those of you that are keen to add an amazing bike to your garage might want to toss in a bid and see what happens!
Would love to hear your thoughts on this newer SP line from Ducati in the comments section as well!
