The BMW R1100S Boxer Cup Replika was a limited-production version of the Bavarian outfit’s first stab at a modern sportbike. But while the company wanted to develop something racier and more up-to-date, they still wanted to work within their established portfolio of components and technology. Naturally, the bike used an uprated version of the company’s signature flat-twin boxer engine, shaft drive, and the company’s proprietary Paralever and Telelever suspension systems that eliminated the traditional front fork and added a sophisticated shaft drive unit to limit dive and improve stability under heavy braking. It’s all very Vorsprung durch Technik [yes I know that’s someone else’s motto], but the bike’s performance, especially on paper, was ultimately underwhelming, considering the machines it was matched against when it was new. A mere 87rwhp produced by the higher-revving 1085cc engine pushing a bike weighing north of 500lbs sounds like a pretty poor value proposition, when compared to contemporary Japanese sportbikes. Prices have remained low, even for limited-edition Boxer Cup Replikas, and the regular version is a downright steal. I know several people who own them and they rave about the blend of traditional long-legged BMW character and real-world performance that belies the experience predicted by the uninspiring spec sheet.

This a very nice, low-mile example of BMW’s early attempt at a modern sporting machine, but there are no bids yet on this BMW R1100S Boxer Cup Replika and very little time left on the auction. To be fair, I think that the starting bid might be just a bit optimistic, and more likely represents a fair asking price: one we posted recently had lower miles and was priced at $7,500. Considering how rare they are, these do show up for sale with surprising regularity and, while miles are low, they’re not exceptionally, collector-bike low. I get the sense that higher miles don’t detract much from BMW values anyway. Durability is kind of the whole point.

Nice bike, but definitely a niche market on these, similar to the earlier K1 in terms of desirability.
