Featured Listing: 1989 Yamaha FZR750R OW01

OK folks – time to pay attention. Often referred to as the Holy Grail of collectable sportbikes, the OW01 is Yamaha’s homologation equivalent to Honda’s RC30. Both were created in order to go Superbike racing, were made in limited numbers and offer the very best possible equipment for the time. Both are eminently valuable, and continue to appreciate with each passing year. Of the two, we see the Yamaha less frequently.

The FZR750R OW01 was built to go WSB racing – period. One look at the dry-break rapid refueling ready tank should tell you that. The fact that the OW01 has lights and other DOT niceties was merely a means to an end. Unlike a typical street bike, the OW01 was an uncompromising race bike, built in just enough numbers to meet WSB homologation rules. But buyers didn’t purchase these bikes for commuting or sport touring; these were privateer race bikes and collector items from Day 1.

The motor consisted of the now familiar 20-valve Genesis head (3 on the intake, 2 for exhaust), but was in a much higher state of tune. Ports were hand finished. High compression, short-skirt pistons with only two rings (reduces friction at the expense of oil consumption) were connected to titanium rods and a lightened crank to reduce rotational weight. Ram air fed carbs of the flat-slide variety; better for high-RPM and full throttle power, but relatively awful for road use. An effective EXUP exhaust valve maximized available torque. All told, you are looking at 120 HP and a 14,000 RPM redline. Put it all together and you have a fantastic race motor, but a peaky and tempermental unit for the street. Maintenance intervals followed that of a race bike.

An the chassis side, the twin spar frame was developed as a derivative of the FZ750R, but utilized higher-quality materials and alloys. Suspension was the very best Ohlins had to offer, including a remotely adjustable rear shock acting on a bespoke swing arm with adjustable pivot points. This was all driven via a close-ratio six speed box. Brakes are huge, and squeezed by Nissin calipers. The riding position is what you would expect for a track bike. The bodywork is thin, lightweight, and seating consists of a thin layer of foam. The rest is sprinkled with titanium, magnesium and other unobtainium materials. The OW01 is a technological tour de force of performance and rarity.

Up for you consideration is a beautiful 1989 Yamaha FZR750R OW01 with only 5039 kilometers (3131 miles). Bike is in mint condition, this OW01 looks gorgeous but if you want to put it under a magnifying glass, there are few light surface cracks in the clear coat on the left side rear cowling below the seat. There is a tiny crack and a chip in the paint on the right front side of the rear cowling that can only be seen from underneath the bike. Previous owner touched up a few handling marks with touch up paint. Lower fairing has been re sprayed and looks beautiful. All fairings are 100% genuine factory original. No dents or dings in the tank, exhaust looks perfect. Windscreen is crisp and there is no rust or corrosion. Previous owner took very good care of this bike. Lol, it was loved as a child. I just installed brand new Michelin pilots front and rear on newly powder coated wheels. Bike is a Japanese import and has been de-restricted for full horsepower. Bike runs flawless better than the day it was new. Other than the new igniter box, bike is completely stock original condition. Service just completed with new battery and engine fluids. This is a fantastic bike that won’t disappoint.

As stated above, the FZR750R OW01 was built to go racing. And many of them did. That is what makes a low mileage, housebroken example such a rare beast. Today’s FZR750R OW01 is not just a unicorn; a survivor in this condition is akin to an albino unicorn. The fact that it comes from a noted collector familiar to these pages only strengthens the story. No need to fear shady dealings from an unknown entity in your quest for the best; here is an authentic OW01 in fantastic condition situated in the US and looking for a new home.

Homologation race bikes from the 1980s and 1990s are in short supply and high demand. As a result all examples command a high price in today’s market. However like all bikes you see on RSBFS, the best specimens fetch the highest prices. This example is very, very good indeed – and it is priced to sell. The seller is looking for $25,500 USD – and is open to offers. That is fair money for such a rare and desirable Yamaha homologation model, and is not likely to remain for long. Rare Pair: 1990 Yamaha YZF750R OW01 and 1986 Suzuki GSX-R750 Limited for Sale

Just a quick Sunday post for you folks who can’t get out riding this weekend. Or for those of you on the East Coast, reading this early in the morning before heading out for the day… So here we’ve got a pair of rare homologation specials from the Age of the Seven-Fifty, where this now-forgotten class was the cutting edge of competition. Sure, the Big Four all had liter-sized bikes available, but while they more powerful, they were also heavier and much more road-oriented, while the 750s were that perfect balance of light weight, agility, and power. Today’s Yamaha YZF750R OW01 and Suzuki GSX-R750 Limited represent some of the very best-handling and most exclusive Japanese sportbikes of the era.

First up is the Yamaha FZR750R OW01, a bike that looks deceptively ordinary at first blush. It was designed to compete directly against the RC30 and in typical Honda fashion, they engineered a completely new solution for their homologation special, with a gear-driven V4, chassis, and single-sided swingarm shared with no other bike in their lineup. Yamaha’s bike shares its silhouette with the more common FZR750R, but is far more exotic than it might appear: titanium rods, twin-ring pistons, an aluminum fuel tank, detachable alloy subframe, quick-release axle clamps, and Öhlins suspension at the front and rear. The engine was almost radically oversquare, although it displaced the advertised 749cc, and used Yamaha’s five-valve head.

This amazing bike has been in storage in a large collection for the last 9 years, dry stored correctly it will need recommissioning by the new owner for road use, it only has 34,000 kilometers and is in great shape with the original exhaust, toolkit and manual with pouch.

It has a few blemishes from its road use as seen in the pics rather than take up a lot of space here with this models lengthy attributes please do your own research, only 500 of these were made, a lot less than the RC30 and were quite a bit more expensive than it these bikes are getting scarce and climbing in value.

Suzuki threw their hat into the ring with their GSX-R750 Limited Edition, the homologation version of the iconic “Slabbie” version of their sportbike. Like the OW01, it’s superficially similar to the standard bike, but features exotic parts intended for racing, like the lightweight dry clutch and electronic anti-dive forks. Lightweight bodywork, an aluminum tank, and a fiberglass tailsection differed from the stock machine, but the engine was still oil and air-cooled to save weight.

Selling off my collection of 1986 GSXR First Generation Slab Side bikes. This is the ultimate collection if you are looking for all (3) excellent condition original bikes. Bikes are to be sold as a package as I have had them a long time and would hate to break them up.

This is the second OW01 we’ve posted up recently and obviously will need some work if you want to use it on the road, but a new owner may just choose to preserve it as-is. The Suzuki is part of a collection so you’ll be picking up three bikes instead of just one, but they’re all in very nice condition with low miles so if you’re thinking of adding some classic Suzukis to your portfolio, you’re in luck!

A pure homologation special never intended for mass-production, the Yamaha YZF-R7 OW02 was a spiritual successor to the storied OW01 that took the fight to the famous Honda RC30 and the Ducati 851 Corsa featured this past weekend. But where the Honda used a different engine configuration than their more common mass production sportbikes and introduced a host of other parts that looked as trick as their specs would suggest, Yamaha’s superbike special appeared, at a glance, to be just a hopped-up YZF-750R. In reality, it was every bit as exotic as Honda’s V4 machine. By the time the R7 rolled around, Yamaha didn’t even have a 750 sportbike in production, which gave the R7 at least a little bit more exotic cachet when new. Looking very much like a slightly bulkier R6 or an R1 with smaller headlights, the familial resemblance is unmistakable, at least on examples that actually have headlights…

Sold for just two years, the R7 was discontinued after the disappointing performance of Yamaha’s WSBK team. To keep the racing competitive and encourage different manufacturers to participate, twins like Ducati’s 916 were allowed a displacement advantage to overcome their relative lack of power compared to four-cylinder machines. But parity is a moving target in racing and, by the late 1990s, the rules started to favor the v-twin bikes so even Honda switched to a new, two-cylinder engine configuration in order to compete.

Equally disappointing was the R7 road bike’s tested performance: by 1999, emissions laws had evolved far past a point where it was possible to ride your racebike to the track, pull off the lights, win a race, then ride it home. The result? A dead stock, the R7 made just 106hp, on-par for 750cc sportbikes of the era, but very disappointing for a pricey exotic. That problem could easily be fixed by activating the second set of injectors sleeping within the motor and fitting a revised airbox that gave a ram-air effect, but the full 162hp also shortened service life of the engine. None of which was an issue if you planned to race your R7, but a bit of an issue if you wanted to use it on the road.

I’m not sure the bike was ever officially sold for road use here in the USA, although I’m sure there are a few kicking around in states with looser regulations. That’s hardly a problem here, since this is a racebike.

In 2001, the Russian company PANAVTO became the general sponsor of the Spanish racing team, taking on board the highly positioned at the time the Spaniard Juan Bautista Borja. It has at its disposal one of the most famous in the world, but same time very rare bike – Yamaha R7 (OW02). It was most advanced racing motorcycle for the World Superbike that time. It was the first and not the most successful attempt to join the Russians in WSBK, as the costs of participation in the series proved to be much more serious than it was then assumed management of the company, and Juan Borge managed to earn 12 points for the season, becoming the 33rd on its results (out of 44 pilots, published at the start at least once).

So far there hasn’t been much interest, but is that because of the price, this bike’s undistinguished racing history, or because the bike currently resides in far-flung Latvia? Is someone out there brave enough to drop nearly $30k on a very exotic track-day toy? Let’s hope so.

Based on YZF750 race bikes from 1987 and 1988, the Yamaha FZR750R OW01 went head-to-head with Honda’s RC30, although on the surface it may have seemed less exotic. While Honda’s machine used a gear-driven V4 configuration with a striking single-sided swingarm, the Yamaha mostly looked like a garden-variety FZR750.

But under the skin, it was every bit as special.

Titanium rods, twin-ring pistons, an aluminum tank with endurance-style fuel filler, a detachable alloy subframe, quick release axle clamps, and Öhlins suspension at both ends. But the centerpiece may have been the gorgeous, hand-welded frames that are almost like fingerprints, with no two exactly alike.

While the engine displaced the expected 749cc, it was rev-happy and radically oversquare, with Yamaha’s signature five-valve head. 121hp doesn’t sound like much in today’s world of “underpowered” 600cc sportbikes that make similar claimed numbers, but it was very competitive at the time and the additional displacement means you get some midrange to go with your howling top end.

And, unlike the RC30, the OW01 always used 17″ wheels at both ends, making tire choice simpler for the modern rider…

With 20,000 miles on the clock, it’s obvious this bike’s been enjoyed as intended, and not just filed away in some collection. These are extremely rare, with just around 1000 OW01s made in total and interest has recently spiked, making this bike a great opportunity with a mere $17,000 Buy It Now price. It’s not perfect, but spares are still available and this could be left as-is, or turned into a gorgeous restoration.

Proof of Concept – 1990 Yamaha OW 01

Shortly after the Superbike World Championship opened in 1988, manufacturers were compelled to prove their production bikes were up to the task, by providing comparable bikes to the marketplace.  Numbers of bikes homologated depended on the size of the manufacturer.  Though it did not result in a championship, Yamaha provided the OW 01 to the fray in 1989 and 1990, and in the process created a very memorable street machine.

Built to compete with the YB4 and RC30, and the eventual championship winning Ducati 851, the OW 01 was a thinly disguised racer.  A 749cc carburetted straight four delivering over 120hp can hardly be otherwise.  The 5-valve OW 01 was reputed to be quite rideable, thanks to EXUP, the automatic exhaust port valve.  The aluminum perimeter frame was not an innovation but this lightweight DeltaBox was , with similar fabricated swingarm.  Large for the day, 43mm forks are fully adjustable, as is the Ohlins rear shock.  Braking handled by 280mm front disks and 177mm rear.

A higher mileage OW 01, this machine might be a restoration candidate, maybe after some serious rides.  The steep price when introduced speaks volumes about the development dollars and potential in each machine.  OW 01’s are available as perfect restorations or patina-ed racers, this one could be great to take in either direction…

Here is a legend, the Yamaha OW01.  In 1988 Yamaha akready had a very fine Superbike in the FZR750R, a bike which managed to challenge the WSB winning Honda RC30.  But as good as the standard FZ was, the introduction of the OW01 in 1989 took the game to a whole other  level.

The OW01 was built to allow Yamaha to go Superbike racing and these homologation machines are pretty close to being true “racebikes for the street” .  The highlights include:

  • Alloy Delta box beam frame based on the FZR but with thinner, lighter and higher quality aluminum
  • Upgraded front and rear suspension including Ohlin race unit with a remote hydraulic pre-load adjuster.
  • Upgraded engine internals cluding titanium conrods, 2-ring pistons, hand finished ports
  • Magnesium brake calipers

This particular OW01 looks to be owned by a serious collector.   The bike isnt perfect, with a scratch or two on the rear fairing, some odd side reflectors and an aftermarket pipe but otherwise the bike looks really good and has very low mileage.

Here is what the seller has to say:

  • Has been kept in a climate controlled environment and only ran once or twice a year.
  • Bike is completely stock except for the Yosh slip on which really makes this bike sound like it should. I do not have the original pipe, but they pop up from time to time, mostly on ebay.uk. In all actuality though this Yosh is far more rare than the stock pipe would be to source.
  • Only damage on this bike is the left side of the tail section. The red paint has been touched up next to the aluminum bobbin fastener and upper right corner of the red number plate has some stress cracks in the finish as the pics show.

One note – given the pictures on the auction, this seller seems to have a fair number of bikes so fresh fluids and rubber would probably need to be factored into the price.

What’s it going to take to acquire this legend?  Well typical prices for the OW01 seem to be hovering around the $20,000 USD and those tend to have more miles than this excellent example.   I think the price on this this one will end up somewhere north of 20k.   To be honest, given the iconic nature of the OW01 I think there is a good chance this auction will end early when someone makes the owner an offer near their reserve so if you are interested I strongly suggest you act fast.

Because the specs and overall silhouette for the Yamaha FZR750R are misleadingly similar to the regular FZR750 and don’t feature an exotic engine configuration like the Honda’s RC30’s gear-driven V4, it might be easy to overlook the OW01 as simply a warmed-over FZR. But it’s every bit as exotic as its rivals, boasting pure racing guts and high-spec bits throughout.

In fact, with only 500 made between 1989 and 1991, it’s fair to say that the OW01 is even more rare and desirable than the RC30, although it was not nearly successful in racing as the Honda.

Because while it might look like a fairly standard FZR, everything about the OW01 is “bespoke”: castings of magnesium, internals of titanium, bore x stroke not shared with any other production Yamaha, flat-slide carbs to fed fuel, and even the frame, while looking stock, was made from higher-quality aluminum. The bike featured Yamaha’s signature five-valve heads and midrange-fattening EXUP valve that gave the motor a surprisingly street-friendly drivability, assuming you kept in mind that the flat-slide carbs couldn’t just be whacked open at low revs…

The OW01 was Yamaha’s answer to the Honda VFR750R RC30 and is much rarer and exotic. When launched for 1989 in the UK the OW01 cost a staggering £12,700, more than twice as much as an FZR1000, with the optional race kit adding £2,415 to the price. Just 197 made their way to the UK, and only 88 were road registered, many of which went straight into collections. By way of comparison, the Honda RC30 cost £8,499 but its race kit was considerably more extensive and expensive. (Yamaha included much more race-orientated trickery as standard, hence the difference). To put all that into perspective, the 2014 list price of a Yamaha YZF-R1 superbike is just £12,399 .

We bought this example in Tokyo and it is frame #648. It is in excellent condition and has travelled just 4,700 miles or 7,600 kilometers. The OW01 is super collectible, we have another example on display in our Auckland showroom which has travelled just 2,800 kilometers. The OW01 is better than stocks or money in the bank we think.

The 119hp output seems pretty lukewarm by today’s standards, but this was state-of-the-art in 1989, a barely-tamed animal for the road that existed only to enable Yamaha’s World Superbike racing efforts, although the EXUP valve did make it reasonably usable on the street. Just keep in mind: like most homologation specials, these require much more maintenance to keep them running than the everyday FZR on which it was based.

It is designed for the track, although tragically, most have ended up in living rooms. They didn’t have the winning record of Honda’s RC30, but sheer rarity and exotic specifications make this a blue-chip collectable of the first order. Bidding is up to $15,000 US with just one day to go. Keep in mind that this bike is in New Zealand if you’re looking to bid!
