Featured Listing: 1990 Yamaha FZR750R OW01

Update 7.26.2019: Dave has renewed his Featured Listing for his OW01. It is now available on eBay and he also notes that spare body work is also available at additional cost (pictures added to gallery). Thanks for supporting the site, Dave, and good luck to buyers! -dc

There was a time in the late 1980s when you could wander into your local powersports dealer and, if you planned properly, walk away with a bike so close to the WSBK kit that could scarcely be ridden on the street. The 1990 Yamaha OW01 was one such bike, crafted to homologate Yamaha’s efforts to beat Honda at the World Superbike game, and released to the hands of the unwashed and under-insured with a handshake and a stiff monthly payment.

1990 Yamaha FZR750R OW01 for sale on eBay

Where Honda used its might to build the RC30 from scratch, Yamaha made its bones by lightening, strengthening and adding go bits to the FZR750. The Deltabox frame on the OW is hand-welded and unanodized, and held off the ground by a nearly full-race suspension, including an Ohlins rear shock. The bikes also had titanium connecting rods pushing two-ring pistons. The cylinders were fed by five-valve heads breathing through a rack of flatslide carbs. Exhaust was kept manageable on the street and screaming at the track with an Exup valve. The trick engine meant peaky delivery, a voracious appetite for oil and slim maintenance intervals.

This one has been kept stock, ridden mostly on the street and has covered 9,000 miles. You wouldn’t know it to look at it. From the seller:

1990 Yamaha OW01 FZR750R. 9800 miles, (15k in Kilometers). Completely stock. Arizona titled and plated. This bike has seen most of its miles on the street and a few track days early in its life. Never damaged, all original paint and body pieces. If you know bikes, you know these are extremely rare. Looking for a good home for this unicorn. Located in Sunny,Dry, Arizona for the last 27 years.

It might not have the track record of it’s rival from Honda, but the OW01 is a serious piece of kit to this day, and as RC30 values push the stratosphere, the OW is sure to be close behind.

Ready to Rip: 1989 Yamaha FZR750RR OW01

Yet another spotless machine from Gary’s Utah collection, this 1989 Yamaha FZR750RR OW01 is the second of its kind from the collection that we have written about this year. Like the one before it, it is spotless, though it has a few more miles and is ready to ride, shod with a brand-new set of Michelin Pilots.

1989 Yamaha FZR750RR OW01 for sale on eBay

The bike is a Japanese-market example, and still shows the original home language stickers on its windshield. This example has been de-restricted, meaning it packs its full complement of 120-odd horses. The polished frame, red-white-blue bodywork and EXUP branded exhaust all show flawlessly, and the bike has traveled just north of 3,000 miles in its 28 years.

The fairings are the original pieces, though they have been resprayed in the stock colors along with the bike’s wheels. The seller says it runs beautifully and contains all new fluids.

From the eBay listing:

Up for sale is a 1989 Yamaha FZR750R OW01 with only 5047 kilometers (3136 miles). Bike is in mint condition with no issues. Wheels and fairings have been professionally resprayed with factory correct color codes. Bike is completely stock condition but has been de-restricted for full power. Fairings and components are 100% genuine factory Yamaha. New Michelin pilots have been installed front and rear. Not a scratch on the exhaust muffler or fuel tank. Bike looks showroom new condition. Bike runs fantastic. New battery and fluids throughout. This bike will not disappoint.

Bike comes with Utah state title and is titled as a street bike for road use. 801-358-6537 for more pictures or questions. $200 deposit thru PayPal immeadiatly after sale. Balance due by check, bank wire or cash in person within 5 business days.

The bike is not the time capsule that Gary’s last OW01 was, but it is in slightly better condition, and is priced at $26,500, about $3,000 over the last bike, commensurate with its shape.

OW Yeah: Two 1989 Yamaha OW-01s at one English dealer

1989 Yamaha FZR750RR OW01 for sale on eBay

The Yamaha OW01, also known as the FZR750RR, is a unicorn in any condition, with just 500 bikes spread over a three model-year run. They were more exclusive, marginally more powerful, and a big chunk more expensive than Honda’s genre-defining RC30.

1989 Yamaha FZR750RR OW01 for sale on eBay

Like the Honda they were up against, OWs won scads of races worldwide, including under American 500cc Gran Prix ace Eddie Lawson at Daytona. All that desirability, coupled with their extreme rarity, means they don’t show up for sale too often, much less two in the same place at the same time.

And yet, here we are. This English dealership has managed to score a brace of 1989 Yamaha FZR750RRs, one with black and white wheels, one with two black wheels. Both bikes appear to be in excellent shape, though the one with bi-color wheels has covered nearly 25,000 miles. The black-wheeled example has not yet cracked 5,000 and looks like the prize of the pair.

Zero miles Yamaha OW01 in the UK

This post is going to be a bit short because we have posted about this model a fair number of times previous, including earlier this month.  Also this bike is listed as being in new condition so the service info isn’t an issue.

The Yamaha FZR 750R OW01.   Only 500 built, a true homologation bike, a legend among fans of early 1990’s sportbikes…I could go on and on but instead, lets just make it so that anyone who isn’t familiar with this bike can check our previous posts by clicking here or check out the info included in the ebay listing.

Simply put, these are legendary bikes that are highly desired by collectors.  And this one is brand new/never been used…and its also the dual headlight model preferred by most collectors (especially those of us in the US).

ow01e

ow01d

ow01b

Since condition isn’t really a concern, lets move on the final question – is this bike worth the $42,000 USD asking price?   My first instinct is no, especially when we had a VERY low mileage example in Switzerland posted earlier this month had an asking price of about $23,000 USD.  And both that bike and this one would also involve shipping costs and import taxes for anyone located in the states

However, this is a zero miles bike which is often considered by serious collectors as one of the top 3 collectible statuses (famous race bike and still in crate from factory/un-assembled being the higher ranked statuses).  Zero mile bikes do tend to invoke a premium over even gently ridden examples of about 20% so I think this one might be fairly priced between $26,500 – $32,000 USD.  Of course if this is a holy grail bike for your collection, you have to ask yourself – when do you really think you are going to see another zero miles 1990 Yamaha FZR750/OW01 again?

So very dear: 1990 Yamaha OW01 with 5,800 miles

owo11

1990 Yamaha OW01 for sale on ebay

Here is a legend, the Yamaha OW01.  In 1988 Yamaha akready had a very fine Superbike in the FZR750R, a bike which managed to challenge the WSB winning Honda RC30.  But as good as the standard FZ was, the introduction of the OW01 in 1989 took the game to a whole other  level.

The OW01 was built to allow Yamaha to go Superbike racing and these homologation machines are pretty close to being true “racebikes for the street” .  The highlights include:

  • Alloy Delta box beam frame based on the FZR but with thinner, lighter and higher quality aluminum
  • Upgraded front and rear suspension including Ohlin race unit with a remote hydraulic pre-load adjuster.
  • Upgraded engine internals cluding titanium conrods, 2-ring pistons, hand finished ports
  • Magnesium brake calipers

ow013

This particular OW01 looks to be owned by a serious collector.   The bike isnt perfect, with a scratch or two on the rear fairing, some odd side reflectors and an aftermarket pipe but otherwise the bike looks really good and has very low mileage.

Here is what the seller has to say:

  • Has been kept in a climate controlled environment and only ran once or twice a year.
  • Bike is completely stock except for the Yosh slip on which really makes this bike sound like it should. I do not have the original pipe, but they pop up from time to time, mostly on ebay.uk. In all actuality though this Yosh is far more rare than the stock pipe would be to source.
  • Only damage on this bike is the left side of the tail section. The red paint has been touched up next to the aluminum bobbin fastener and upper right corner of the red number plate has some stress cracks in the finish as the pics show.

One note – given the pictures on the auction, this seller seems to have a fair number of bikes so fresh fluids and rubber would probably need to be factored into the price.

ow014

What’s it going to take to acquire this legend?  Well typical prices for the OW01 seem to be hovering around the $20,000 USD and those tend to have more miles than this excellent example.   I think the price on this this one will end up somewhere north of 20k.   To be honest, given the iconic nature of the OW01 I think there is a good chance this auction will end early when someone makes the owner an offer near their reserve so if you are interested I strongly suggest you act fast.

Big Crayola Fizzer: 1994 Yamaha FZR1000

fz10002

Back in the mid 1990’s Yamaha was producing some truly excellent bikes, including the FZR600, legendary 750cc OW01 and FZR1000.   However, during the 1990’s Yamaha also made some rather “curious” design decisions regarding the graphics packages on their 90’s bikes, such as the “love-it-or-loath-it” FZR600 Vance and Hines edition and this FZR1000.

NOTE:  According to the seller, the “black metallic” graphics package on this FZR1000 was mostly sold outside of the U.S. white the more familiar white/red  color scheme was sold in the states.

This 1994 FZR 1000 may have had graphics that seem to have been based on the freakazoid cartoon but the underlying bikes were still engineered by the folks at Yamaha..  The 1994 FZR1000 motor produced 145 HP when new with a top speed of 174 mph/280 kph which was a match for the class leading ZX11.  It wasn’t a featherweight (it weighed 471 pounds/214.0 kg) but it was blazing fast, comfortable and had excellent stopping power due to twin front discs.

fz10003

1994 FZR1000 in 90’s colors for sale on ebay

This particular FZR1000 looks to be in absolute pristine shape.  I am not seeing any evidence of the bike being down/road rash on either the lower fairings or the exhaust canister and the seller states that all parts are stock/OEM.

fz joinedThe seller actually includes quite a lot of information on his ebay posting (although I would have like some pics of the other side of the bike).  There is also a youtube video of what appears to be the same bike .   The seller has indicated he bought the bike from the person who posted the video but has put less than 200 miles on it over the course of ownership

Here is a summary of what the seller has to say regarding condition and ownership history:

  • Adult owned, well maintained.
  • Tires in great condition.
  • Fluids changed seasonally, no leaks, last season the mechanic did a scheduled radiator flush with new fluid.
  • Heated winter storage for all of its life.
  • New battery 09/01/12
  • Previously maintained by certified motorcycle mechanic who is passionate about making the bike run true and correct .
  • Approximately 14,700 miles on it…….less then 1000 miles per year.

fz1000dash

So whats this big FZR worth?   Well as the seller correctly wrote in their ebay auction, you have to ask yourself how many of these you think are out there in an unmolested/original and unrestored condition.  Mileage isn’t unreasonable given this bike is now 20+ years old (damn I’m getting old) but the youtube video does seem to include a rattle that would need to be checked out if not already resolved.   KBB lists a retail of about 3000 USD which seems to match up to recent ebay sales history.  Current bid is 1200 and reserve hasn’t been met.

I would guess that this one is going to appeal to one of two types; either someone who had one previously and want to relive days gone by or someone who wants the base bike and is willing to incur the expense of a bodywork swap to the more appealing red/white look.

gsxr right

This would be at the top of my list to Santa.

The info:

Here is a once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase 2 of the most desireable race replica road legal bikes from the late 80’s.

These bikes along with the Honda RC30 and the Kawasaki ZZR750RR were definately the turning point for what was to become the normal factory process for homologation for racing.

Both bikes have been imported from Japan and have full aust import approval.

Suzuki GSXR750 RK (RR) 1989,

only 500 were produced to comply with racing rules,

18,304 Km, very good overall original condition, the fairing has been repainted at some point and the paint is a bit blistered

ow right

I’m not up the OW’s, the owner mentions upgrading to full power spec.  Is that just a result of it being a Japanese domestic bike?

The info:

Yamaha OWO1

Only 1000 were produced

This has been upgraded to full horsepower spec, also has a performance pipe, and in generally in very good condition.

The speedo only shows 1007 Km not sure if this is correct, I would assume it has been changed or reset after the upgrading ???

Heaven Sent: Yamaha FZR750R OW-01 (Switzerland)

We all know what this is right ?

122-1106-04-o+1989-yamaha-ow-01+

The glorious FZR750R (aka OW-01). This bike is probably one the most exclusive, rare and historically significant serial production motorbike ever produced by Yamaha. This is a true Race Replica, in the sense that it is a race bike with lights fitted on…About 500 of them were produced at the end of the 80s, making the OW-01 a more rare find than a Honda RC30. 30 years later and this Yamaha still looks the business. With that big and squared tank, thin seat, low handle bars, and intake pipes between you and the windscreen, smaller headlights vs. the distant parent FZR1000, this is still an awesome ultra aggressive looking bike. And the good news is, that it sin’t only about the looks, every component of this 750 is designed with the purpose of achieving lightweight and performance. This is still a fast and raw motorbike. It has carburettors,  it wants to be revved and it will surprise you with a power urge accompanied by a distinct sound of road legal race bikes that have not been replicated (apart form the ambitious Desmosedici of Ducati) in too many years (Honda might come back with the 5 cylinder RCV but probably that’s not going to happen unless the global economy recovers).

182104081313425500761

The other even more important, news is that the above spectacular model, with just short of 17.000 km, is on sale in Switzerland at, hold yourself… 12.000 CHF = 13133 $ ! This is the best value for an OW-01 I have seen in a long, long time. If you are looking for this bike in particular, or if you just have 13 grands at disposal and you read RSBFS regularly, you’d be a fool not to snap this one before somebody else will.

1989 Yamaha FZR750R OW-O1 in Switzerland

The following video from British MCN’s Micheal Neeves says it all:

As I said a few days ago, the season for great deals has just begun, but this will be difficult to beat for a while…The challenge is on…
