With its white frame and yellow bodywork, today’s Buell S2 Thunderbolt evokes a kit-bike version of Ducati’s Superlight. That’s no bad thing, if you’re asking me: I am a huge fan of the Superlight, even though it really isn’t super, or light… Introduced in 1994, the Thunderbolt was built around an attractive tubular frame and powered by a very undersquare 1203cc Harley-Davidson Sportster motor putting out a claimed 76hp that was mated to a five-speed transmission. That’s not impressive on paper, but the bike positively belts out torque and the bike was supposedly capable of 145mph. That performance is likely a result of the bike’s low weight: a claimed 441lb dry weight is pretty svelte, especially considering that boat anchor of an engine. Very trick and somewhat 80s-looking Performance Machine spun aluminum wheels were optional, but I prefer the standard Marchesini items seen here, in spite of the fact that white wheels are a real pain to keep clean.
Excellent, original genuine: Buell S2 Thunderbolt. All rebuilt and as new. Call me for further info, with factory manual.
It’s hard to imagine in today’s world of high-tech adventure-touring bikes that cost as much as a nicely-optioned mid-sized sedan, but the Buell S2 Thunderbolt was envisioned as a touring bike, with available color-matched bags and handlebars designed for long distance comfort. Those don’t appear to be included here, but i think this bike probably makes more sense as a weekend blaster anyway, with its vibey, characterful long-stroke Harley engine. It was never really a great bike, but it’s a very cool bike, with good handling, distinctive looks, and an engine with incredible aftermarket support. The kind of bike you could complain about all day, and still buy one. The listing could use better photos and some more information, but it is claimed to have been “rebuilt” and is obviously no garage queen. I’m still shocked these can be had for so little, but I guess there’s no accounting for taste. Get them while they’re cheap.

Cool bike! Several years+ ago…I had 1st bought a 2007 XB12R/Firebolt (Yellow) and then a 2002 X1/White Lightning (w/the white frame/white wheels/white body…and the blue ceramic exhaust). Owned each for only a couple of years and sold. Both really fun bikes. Liked the X1 a bit better. If room wasn’t such an issue now…with too many bikes now…I’d love to own this one!
If Erik Buell had built this in Italy and changed his name to Enrico Bellisimo he would have been proclaimed a genius.Sadly the Harley guys didn’t want a quick fun bike and the snooty sports types didn’t want a Hardly Moving Son motor.
The End.
Too funny “Hardly Moving Son” .
Or, Hardly Able Son
