After years of financial struggles, it seems like Bimota is in relatively good hands: new 49% shareholders Kawasaki are investing in the brand, using the Italian marque as a vehicle for their World Superbike aspirations. It’s a shame, but completely understandable to see their new models focus exclusively on Kawasaki powerplants, as previous Bimotas have used a whole range of engines from Ducati, Honda, Suzuki, and BMW, to name a few. Today’s Bimota KB4, as we can deduce from the name, is the fourth Kawasaki-powered Bimota model, and uses the Ninja 1000SX’s 1043cc inline four-cylinder. Naturally, with that displacement, the engine isn’t competition-oriented and produces a seemingly modest 140hp, but is very smooth and torquey, with a hugely flexible midrange. The chassis is where Bimota have worked their usual magic, and the bike is extremely light, at just 428lbs wet, and has an extremely short wheelbase. The engine is pushed as far forward in the chassis as possible, moving the radiator to the tail of the bike, a design feature previously seen on the Benelli Tornado Tre. Running gear is of the usual incredibly high-specification and, as with all recent Bimotas, the detailing is achingly beautiful. But is the bodywork beautiful? Well, it’s certainly striking, and very functional: the strange carbon panels on the sides of the bikes are actually ducts that channel cooling air to the tail-mounted radiator. Reviews of the riding experience have been extremely positive, so here’s hoping the unusual formula of sport-touring engine and ergonomics, mixed with top-shelf sportbike weight-savings, suspension, and handling find their footing with the well-heeled buyers Bimota needs to attract moving forward.

Today’s Bimota KB4 comes to us courtesy of EuroCycle, a Las Vegas based dealership. I realize this machine is not to everyone’s taste, but I kinda love it. Not every Bimota is conventionally attractive; I’m honestly a fan of what they were trying [I think] to do with the Mantra. The KB4 isn’t trying to be a racebike, like a KB998 Rimini, or a hyperbike, like the Tesi H2. It’s an exotic roadster with a flexible, torquey powerplant that features wild looks and interesting technology. It’s a bike for wealthy enthusiasts who want to do more than just collect their Bimotas, or go on short canyon rides before heading home to suck down handfuls of ibuprofen or vicodin while they admire their bikes a bit longer, standing in the garage, joints aching from punishing ergonomics. I love it, because I love weird bikes, and because I think values of these will tank and I’ll be able to pick one up in a few years for a fraction of the bike’s $34,995 asking price. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking?

Looks like they were working overtime in the ugly department.
