For Sale: 1979 Honda CBX with only 9 miles!
{Update: This bike sold before we could finish this post. Mike notes it went for $27k! The buy it now was $27k and we suspect it was sold for a similar number. -dc}
What you are looking at is perhaps one of the best preserved examples of a legend. The Honda CBX is larger than life – with six cylinders, 24 valves and practically its own area code. We have posted a few on RSBFS over the years, but never a first year model with so few miles. You’ve got to hand it to someone: this work of art was really purchased and displayed as a work of art. This bike is so cool we are also posting it over on CSBFS.
Admittedly, the first thing that caught my eye on this one was the price: $26,995 BIN (!) The opening ask was no-less astronimic at $25,995. I have NEVER seen a CBX drive that sort of money (normally these go in the $6-10k range), but then we don’t see many 32 year old motorcycles with NINE miles on the clock. Both must be some kind of record.
Every bike tells a story, and the seller has a lot of story to share on this one. Grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and enjoy!

Click the link to jump to the auction and pour over the high resolution pictures. It is undoubtedly gorgeous and well preserved. The seller is obviously passionate about the bike, and you could certainly do worse than a 9 mile CBX. For the rest of us without that kind of cash – is this really the going rate??
Lucky for you, I found a second very low mileage CBX!
For Sale: 1979 Honda CBX with 976 miles
So maybe you didn’t like the silver CBX. Here we have a red one, same year, with only a few more miles. Less than 1,000 miles for a 1979 model is incredible, and this bike looks brand new. The seller has all of the paperwork including the original box!
This is definitely another great looking machine – albeit one that has been used a little (as it should). The amazing thing to me is that while the nine mile bike above has thus far had zero bids, this bike is now up to $18,100 with very heavy bidding – and a reserve still in place. I have never seen a CBX go for that kind of money – much less two of them!
As stated above, every bike tells a story. Interestingly enough, the fewer the miles the bigger the story! The seller of this red CBX provides some detail on this beauty.
From the seller (CBX #2)
I bought this 1979 Honda CBX Super Sport new from “Cycles of Boulder” in Boulder, Colorado on July 19, 1980. After seeing the bike in the cycle magazines of the day, I immediately wanted one, not so much to ride everyday, but to collect and preserve. Unfortuately, I could not afford one when they were first released so I thought my dream of buying one new was gone until the sales manager at Cycles of Boulder, a friend of the family, told me there were still some left in the Honda warehouse in California as of July first and they had lowered the price on them. All that remained was to choose the color. Since the dealer said there were only a few red ones available, I ordered the “Candy Red” instead of the silver since I figured they were rarer and more collectable.I have only put 976 miles on the CBX since I purchased it. These have been easy, “break in” miles which I put on over the years in order to keep the engine seals, bearings, cylinder walls, and so on from going bad from just sitting. The bike has always been covered in the garage. With the exception of oil changes, draining and refilling the gas tank every year, and replacing the battery, the Honda has never had a wrench on it. I have always used Honda brand oil and filters. Stabil was added to the gas and I filled the tank to the brim to prevent rust. OEM Yuasa batteries have been used with the last one being replaced about 6 months ago. The Super Sport has never been dropped, never driven hard, never riden in the rain or even washed, and never modified in any way. It is as close to buying one new as you are likely to find.
I kept all paperwork for the CBX including the owner’s manual, warranty booklet, owner’s ID card, pre-delivery check list, sales contract and both keys. In addition, I asked the dealer to give me part of the crate for the bike which can be seen in the first photo. There are very few “defects” on the Honda that I am aware of. The tachometer is somewhat slow to respond when you first start to ride but it gets better with use and the speedometer will sometimes be noisy. Both of these problems are due to the lubricant inside them getting dry and most original CBX’s will do this am I told. The alternator also makes the ocassional noise that CBX’s are known to make. Finally, I recently noticed that the rear brake master cylinder is leaking and will need to be rebuilt. Rebuild kits are readily available and inexpensive.
It is hard for me to sell the Honda after all these years but situations change and if I can find someone to care for it as I have, I will let it go. I would really prefer that the CBX goes to a collector or to a museum as it is just too nice to be someones driver or, God forbid, modified after all the pains I have taken to keep it like new.
This auction is also going on right now, and if you think you can top the $18,100 current bid, click the link and jump over to the auction. There are also plenty of additional photos to peruse.
I hope you have enjoyed these 12 cylinders of madness. The CBX is really an amazing motorcycle for the time, and is still very imposing today. Should these bikes sell, they will set a high water mark for CBX values – and possibly pull up some of the more used machines available. Silver or Red – take your pick and good luck!

I have 2 months ago wanted to buy the same bike as the red just with the fact that the seller claimed that it was in spain and that he would sell at a very low price because he lacked money. I did not think that the agreement was likely so it petered out. this I can understand now that the course is for sale in the U.S. alone. I myself live in Denmark. The bike was on sale for approx. $ 5000
