For Sale: 1986 Yamaha TZR125
RSBFS readers know we love grey market import bikes – especially the two strokes. But those bikes are often prohibitively expensive and impossible to register in many states (such as CA). If you are not ready to pony up the big bucks for a Lance RG500 Gamma or RZV500 – or God forbid a RZ/RG hybrid – perhaps starting smaller is in order. Sure, you could go the NS250 route, but prices there are rising faster than ever. What’s a dedicated smoker fan to do? How about looking into some of the cool 125cc machines available?
Originally released for the Japanese home market as well as Europe, the TZR125 might seem somewhat familiar. Sporting a Deltabox frame, the TZR’s sporting intent is instantly recognizable. The 125cc two stroke single is liquid cooled, and power is enhanced via a Yamaha Power Valve System (YPVS) just like the RZ350 and RZ/RZV500. Braking duties are handled by a single disc in the front and a drum in the rear (later variants offered a rear disc). All in all, it is a lightweight, tidy package meant to bring out your inner Grand Prix daydreams on a bicycle budget.

Steering Head bearings serviced/adjusted new chain fresh oil Yamaha mirrors very light weight super fun to ride very unique, i doubt you’ll ever see another one on the road!
The seller is correct – this is NOT a bike you will see often in the US. It appears to be in pretty good condition for its age, and is certainly a unique offering even by RSBFS standards! For those of you wondering about the fairing, these bikes did not come with one as standard. Given the markets in which this bike was meant to play, fairings add cost to both the purchase price as well as insurance. Keeping the bike naked makes it lighter, cheaper and more damage resistant.
Ask yourself: why do you ride what you ride? If your mount of choice was chosen to keep ahead of your buddies, show off at stoplight drag races or eclipse triple digit speeds on the street with regularity, then this is not the bike for you. If you revel in getting the most out of what you ride – if you value quality of experience over quantity – then this might just fit perfectly as a first step into grey market collectables. The best part? It’s relatively cheap!
This rare, unique and California titled buzzer is being offered at only $2,999! For more information, pictures and a chance to contact the seller, click the link and jump over to the auction. Good luck, and be sure and tell ’em you saw it on RSBFS!
