Ducati’s 916 SPS or “Sport Production Special” is one of the most desirable Ducatis of the modern era, a classic 90s homologation special. Rules changes in World Superbike racing allowed v-twins to displace as much as 1000cc, but Ducati found that the original Desmoquattro v-twin itself was only able to handle displacement increases to 955cc. Any larger and the cases would crack under racing stresses. The SPS allowed the company to begin racing their stronger, larger-displacement 996cc v-twin before the updated 996 model was actually introduced. It looked like a regular 916 at a glance, but it was extensively modified in ways not readily apparent. The close-ratio gearbox from the 748 was fitted and a lighter frame was designed, but the most significant changes made to the SPS were related to the new 996cc engine that was comprehensively redesigned to include new heads, barrels, pistons, injectors, and a lighter crank.

$36,000 is a lot of dosh for a bike, although it’s on point for a real Ducati 916 SPS. The question here is: does the race prep and associated parts make this worth more or less than a stock machine? I’d argue that it probably makes this bike worth less, much as it pains me to say it. This isn’t some pampered museum piece, it’s a legitimate racing machine that’s spent its life being used as intended, and comes looking very, very authentic, but bearing a few battle scars earned on the field of conflict. Yes, it would look good in your living room, but I think collectors will look elsewhere for their SPS. Hopefully, some well-heeled track day aficionado will snap this one up and use it to tear up racetracks for many years to come.
