2003 Moto Guzzi Ghezzi-Brian Folgore

As petty as it may be, one of the most satisfying in the world is to see is the big guy lose. All the shiny tools and big trailers can only get you so far and that’s why every once in a while, the little guy is able to break through and take the top step. This type of story isn’t exclusive to motorsports but boy has motorsports been privy to some of the most romantic examples. Britten and Buell are two of my personal favorite stories but that’s not to take any credit away from all the enthusiasts who have done the same thing with custom builds, club races, top speed runs, etc.

Today we have a chapter of a similar story that is set in Italy starring Guiseppe Ghezzi and Brian Saturno. What’s it about?  An enthusiast who loved to toil around Northern Italy on Guzzis and decided his machine had so much more to give. It’s hard to say what exactly happened in the makeshift factory where these were built but one thing led to another and the duo ended up racing their V11-derived race bike in the Italian 1996 SuperTwins Championship. Not only did they compete but the ragtag outfit managed to take home the championship in a field littered with established BMWs and Ducatis. After topping the 1996 championship Ghezzi and Brian continued producing “trackified” Guzzis for a rather small niche of riders who lusted for a race-spec Moto Guzzi. One of those models is our RSBFS find for the day: a 2003 Ghezzi-Brian Folgore.

One of the things that allows the little guys to create some crazy fast bikes is that they aren’t limited by the constraints of being one the big guys. Red tape, investors, accountants, and so on and so forth. Without any of these things holding them back, Ghezzi-Brian was able to create an out-of-the-box design that accommodated the horizontal V-twin setup that Guzzis are famous for.

The V-twin in question today is 1,056 cc powerplant out of the V11 that pumps out ~90hp and ~80 lb/ft of torque. That’s very quick for 2003 and is still quick today.

There’s certainly a lot to look at here. One of the interesting aspects of this bike is the airbox. As seen in the picture, the intakes connect to the frame which also functions as a big airbox to help the 2 cylinders breathe. One of the keys to producing high hp twins is a huge airbox. Look at any Buell and you’ll see the airbox is quite large as well. The front brake is also a rim-mounted design which eliminates the need for a second rotor/caliper and reduces the unsprung mass over the front wheel.

The orientation of the engine also allows the multi-function steel frame to stay low and drop right through the center of the V and connect to the airbox. The exhaust side is connected to a Bub exhaust which is absolutely critical to bring any V-twin to life. An aluminum gas tank sits on top but is of course covered by the one-piece fiberglass tank and seat which adds visual length and sleekness to the design.

One thing that’s undeniable with the Ghezzi-Brians is the pursuit of performance. Not many stones were left unturned with these bikes. A Moto Guzzi V-twin will certainly have some inherent flaws that will make it perform below its Japanese counterparts but at the end of the day, the creators of this machine built exactly what they wanted. That’s the brilliant thing about these small outfits: they build what they want and by taking a different line than those in front, they get ahead even if it’s only for a brief moment.

This bike was listed on BaT in October 2020 and that listing mentions the seller acquired the bike in 2008. It was bid to $12,500 but did not sell and it seems that the seller is trying his luck again on Ebay. It’s estimated that 100 of these were produced and roughly 25 made it stateside so transactions are far and few in between. It’ll be tough to find a price point especially with the madness today but it’s certainly worth more that $12,500. At the time of writing, the bid is at $8,100 with 6 days to go.

Orange Bang – 2012 Triumph Daytona 675R Track Day Bike

For your RSBFS Track Day Tuesday fun, how about this bright orange Triumph 675R for some high-zoot apex strafing? The mainstay powertrain of choice in Moto 2 GP racing, there really should be no concern about the track worthiness of the unique Triumph triple. And the rest of the package looks pretty well sorted and clean – from the high-end components that come standard on the 675R, right down to the aftermarket race bodywork, the safety wiring and frame sliders. Looks like this one is ready to go!

With a lightweight and narrow chassis, fully-adjustable front and rear suspension the Daytona 675 is composed on all surfaces, while top of the range brakes deliver eye popping stopping power.

The cycle parts are all of the highest level. Öhlins 43mm NIX30 forks and TTX36 rear shock come are developed from the white-hot heat of MotoGP competition, while the Brembo four-piston radial monoblock calipers offer mindblowing levels of stopping power and feel. The comprehensive instrumentation includes a programmable gear change indicator, gear indicator and built in lap timer as standard, while a host of performance orientated accessories include a plug and play quickshifter, performance exhausts and even a full factory race kit.

Less likely to hurt you when compared to an R1 or similar liter bike on the race track, the 675R is by no means a slouch. With 120+ HP on tap, and the stocker coming in at under 370 pounds (dry), this track weapon will slide under that weight between bodywork and lighting delete alone. And with Ohlins suspenders and sublime Brembo radial mount monoblocks you are looking at something that can hang with much larger bikes – with a lot less effort. That makes for a more enjoyable track day overall, especially if your local track is more twisty than long straights. If you have not considered riding on a track day, you really should; it will make you a better street rider, AND is a ton of fun. Once you do you will be hooked. I Dream In Carbon Fiber: 1999 Ducati 996S

Ah, carbon fiber. Could there ever be anything so cool as carbon roving knitted into a bi-directional matrix and embedded in epoxy resin? Light weight and super strong, carbon fiber was the hot new “in” thing in the 1980s and 1990s. Originally developed in the late 60s and 1970s as aerospace and military grade material (although the concepts go as far back as the 1800s!), carbon fiber soon became more earth bound in the form of Formula 1 cars, and later as off the shelf components for the every day man. And while these used to be parts exclusively for performance, today one can purchase any number of items made from the stuff, including “carbon look” stickers that – I have on good authority – will automatically add 10 HP to whatever you stick them to. But to really get what is going on with today’s 1999 Ducati 996S, you have to cast your mind back to when carbon fiber was expensive and exclusive. Wrapping an expensive and exclusive bike with that stuff was just over the top and for show. Which, apparently, this bike was.

This is a rare bike indeed. One of 201 Ducati 996S 1999 model year. Coveted first year! This was the Ducati factory 996 Canadian launch bike in 1999 and they did it up with a full Ducati collaboration Carbon Dream factory race kit. If you don’t know Carbon Dream, they make carbon fibre for Bugatti Hyper cars amongst others. This was a crazy expensive option you could choose when ordering your 996S. Obviously Ducati launch bikes were all done up for the shows. The bike has never been down and has been fully and regularly serviced by the previous owner’s Ducati mechanic prior to my purchase. He was a collector and had several bikes in his stable.

Underneath all of the super cool window dressing lies the 996. The follow on act to the mighty 916, the 996 had all the great looks of the original, but with slightly softer lines. What was not softer was the power delivery, as Ducati bumped up the displacement to keep the bike on top of the WSBK rostrum. The S model of the lineup was primarily a suspension upgrade, courtesy of Swedish brand Ohlins. The seller claims this particular bike was an official Ducati show bike for the 996S launch in Canada. I cannot confirm this (perhaps some of the RSBFS Ducati tifosi might have some knowledge on that front) but by all accounts this looks like a show bike. The carbon bits are indeed gorgeous, and the color combo is an interesting mix of old and new. With a starting bid of just under $12k, this bit of flash will be auctioned off by the end of the week. Good From Afar – 1984 Yamaha RZ350

Just a quickie post on a potentially interesting mystery bike for your weekend reading and researching. It is listed as a 1984 Yamaha RZ350, and these are always fun bikes to post about. The fan base is rabid, and these are getting more and more rare as time passes. In today’s case the mystery is less about what the bike might be, and more about the condition. There are only the 3 pictures, and scant info from the seller. Still, with a price in the basement for the model – and the potential for some real upside in terms of what is on (or in) the bike – there is a lot of interest in this one.

Runs great. Starts with one kick. Has sun fade. Gas tank is clean on inside but outside needs paint. Tires are old. Power wheelies in first and second gear.

Sure, it appears to be well used, if not a little beaten up. It also has a set of chambers, but no info on what else. There has been a lot of bidding thus far, and this one is definitely going to a new home at the end of the auction. You can check out all the details here. Good Luck!!

All Bimotas are rare. It doesn’t matter the model, the year, the capacity. Sure, some models are much more rare and drool worthy than others (here’s looking at you, Mantra), but all are built in small-batch goodness. So what happens when you take a really, really cool model such as a YB11 Superleggera (Italian for Super Light) and go a bit bonkers on upgrades? You end up with today’s glorious hot rodded and sublimely modded 1997 model YB11. Powered by Yamaha’s ubiquitous FZR1000 Genesis motor, this California-based bike has left no dollar unturned in the quest for horsepower updates. To tell the story, I’ll hand it over to the seller:

30% Bhp increase (147 at the wheel) ,for a total $9175,$3575 being labor (That’s 20 years ago! ,600miles since that performance rebuild).
I just brought it out off storage and spent a easy $3000 this week ,battery ,tires ,all fluids ,forks ($1000) ,New brake pads ,RK Chain ,carburetor rebuild ,fuel pump and pet-cock and so on.

If you ever wanted to own a Bimota , Yb11 are the nicest to work on by far and parts are easy to obtain and are so much fun to ride them.
I have had this one sitting for 15years and I only rode it once unfortunately. Clean title ,all the Oem paper work truck load off receipts ,factory race stand ,Oem muffler etc … There are Chips in the solo seat (as per photo ) and a small rub mark on the mirror which you really need to look for, It is a 25year on Italian bike so its not a new bike there are marks.

So, mechanically, this 25 year old is really quite a bit newer – and buffer – than a cursory glance would show. And sure, it does have a few minor, uh, um, character lines that show a past history that wasn’t all indoor carnauba wax spa days draped in 100% terry cloth towels. But for a bike that is mean to be ridden, for a bike that seeks to outperform the stocker OEM that donated its guts to power this beauty, usage should be mandatory. Think of it as an experienced partner. And the best part about this one is the cost of the bike is NOT the going rate for a clean YB11 PLUS all the mods and upgrades PLUS all the labor PLUS additional fees. Given what has been done, the Buy It Now of $12,995 seems almost reasonable. Except your leggy Italian supermodel now breathes fire on the way to “you are going to jail” velocities. It’s safe to say that the Fireblade prices over the past two years have set the 900RR on a new trajectory.  What was once a bike known for being shoved in a back alley with purple fairings and a tucked license plate became an overnight sensation. While the values today are still a couple miles too high off the Earth’s surface for regular folk, the one thing they did do is cement how important this motorcycle is. Our find today is one of the down to earth, black Fireblades that should scratch any collectors itch.

I won’t spend time on the specifics of the blade since any halfway-sport bike enthusiast should know the ancestry and how much the 1993 model shook things up for the sport bike market. It made a lot of people rethink what a sport bike should be and how you shouldn’t have to compromise between speed and handling. It’s displacement left it a bit short of the liter+ bikes but the weight made up the difference by giving feel and corner speed.

Image 41 - 1993 Honda CBRThe seller doesn’t list anything about prior owners but it’s fair to assume that a 30 year old bike with 10K miles has only switched hands a few times. It seems to be in incredible condition and looks good from 1 foot out. As much as I would love to see a good Yosh pipe on it, you have to appreciate the owner’s desire to leave it stock.

Now to the good part. How much do you pay? How much has everyone else paid? The 900RR market has been a bit perplexing recently. The craziness has been documented but no one really knows what to make of it and more importantly, no one knows where it will settle in a few years.

There is a BaT auction of a 1993 900RR red, white, and blue with 2 days left at $17.5K.

High bid on this same same bike on BaT was $8.5K. Can anyone make sense of this whole thing?

It’s hard to see this moving for $15K but the seller may be a little more realistic after seeing the BaT high bid. There might be an opportunity here for those who aren’t willing to fork over their life savings for a color scheme but want to be part of the 900RR conversation.

Super Rare & Single: 1986 Yamaha SRX600

In the world of Yamaha, this is not really a sport bike. It is not mega powerful. It does nothing extraordinary. Yet somehow the SRX – this retro British single – is a lost gem in the models offered by the Yamaha Motor Co. Lightweight, impossibly narrow, and ultimately flickable, the SRX represents all the elements that make motorcycling FUN, without the unnecessary baggage of plastic bodywork, extreme riding position or uncontrollable horsepower.

In the US, the SRX came in two sizes: small (250cc) and large (600cc). We seem to be able to the find the 250 models much more readily than the bigger bike, which does make some sense; the 250 was viewed as an entry level machine, whereas more experienced riders were looking for bigger bore multis and the like. Thus the 250 was relatively popular, while the 600 gained a quiet, but ardent following.

Open to offers, Im negotiable. . 1986 Yamaha SRX600S (not SC), bored out to 635cc, new valve seats, guides, seals machine work performed by Boyko Racing in October 2021 (https://boykoracing.com/). So it is practically a new engine with 0 miles on it. Clean and clear title. US production model purchased February 2003. VIN JYA2EF003GA000247. 10,503 miles and does not have the “5th gear” characteristics. Never raced. If you are familiar with these bikes, you know how hard these are to find, and find a good example. Today’s example is not exactly stock. The seller has put a lot of work into modernizing and upgrading the basic package. That includes a bigger bore on the single slug, along with some head work. Intake and exhaust are both updated, as are the cosmetics. But rather go big and gaudy, this SRX still retains a lot of the basic feel that was the SRX. Think of it as an SRX+. Regardless, if you are in the market for the rare, one-year-only bigger capacity SRX, you could be looking a long time to find one in this condition. Track Bike Tuesday – 2012 KTM RC8R Track

KTM started to transition their flagship to a racing-only model in 2011, packing everything a superstock racer could want and leaving all the DOT equipment behind.  Here’s a rare un-used 2012 on showroom display in Oceanside, CA.

Starting in the engine bay, the proven 75-degree twin has flowed heads to accompany its four cams and four valves per cylinder.  Titanium intake valves, diamond-like coating on the cam followers and Keihin fuel injection make for a reliable 177 hp.  The underslung Akropovic exhaust is all titanium, but hidden in the knife-edged fairing.  WP dampers are all around including the steering damper, with 43mm inverted forks sporting a nitride coating, which is also used on the shaft of the monoshock.  Brembo brakes and Marchesini forged wheels keep a low profile in black, but are the best available.  The swingarm height is adjustable, along with rider adjustments for handlebars, footpegs, and seat height.  Racetrack requirements like slipper clutch, quickshifter and GP shift pattern are also on board.

Not much to say about the motorbike-porn condition, and though the dash isn’t shown powered up the bike appears un-ridden.  Just a two-liner in the eBay auction –

Either by design or anticipating competition rules, the race-spec KTM lacks traction control and ABS, and pre-dates the latest multi-gyro systems.  Nothing a pro racer would want, but track day or thunderbike entrants will have to listen to the more conservative voice in their helmet.  Any racing presumes the bike will be ridden, though a continued display career is a distinct possibility.
