For sale: 1985 Honda Interceptor VF1000R with low miles!
This beautiful survivor from the heyday of the Big Four technology wars has less than 5,000 miles on it – and looks the part. One liter of power, gear-driven camshafts, hand-laid fiberglass bodywork, and only a two-year model run make these VFR models very desirable. While the 1986 model (with dual headlightsand Rothman’s livery) still carries a premium, you would be hard pressed to find as clean an example as this one today.
From the seller:
UP FOR SALE MY 1985 VF1000R. I’VE OWNED THIS BIKE FOR 7 YEARS AND HAVE PUT ON ABOUT 195 MILES..I JUST PUT ON NEW METZLER TIRES AND NEW FACTORY BATTERY. OIL CHANGED EVERY YEAR SINCE I’VE OWED IT. I HAVE THE FACTORY EXHAUST IN NEW CONDITION THAT I AM SELLING FOR AN ADDITIONAL $300…THE VF1000R IS KNOW AS THE FIRST SUPERBIKE. PLEASE CALL WITH ANY QUESTION.
Now I’m not too sure about the seller’s claim about this being the first real superbike, as there are *many* defensible choices that come to mind (’84 Ninja 900 just to name one from the same era), however the VF1000R was quite the looker and performer in its day. The price for all of this technological wonderment placed it as one of the most expensive Japanese sportbikes of the time (rivaling the overly complicated Turbos), and lead to its eventual demise.
So what’s it worth? Unfortunately, despite its relative rarity, this is still a mass-produced Japanese motorcycle from the 1980’s. Depreciation has not been kind to this era, and the auction is currently sitting with the opening ask of $2,000 and the reserve still in effect. When new, these were $5k+ machines. And while the low mileage and excellent apparent condition of this particular bike certainly helps, the overall collector market for these types of bikes is not terribly strong. The great news is that you can pick up this beauty for a reasonable investment, ride it hard (it is a Honda, after all), and enjoy the ownership of a rare sportbike. and check it out!

As nice as they looked you could go out and buy one years afterwords showroom fresh. They were porkers.
Porker is an understatement – 600+ lbs! I jumped on a VF1000R I bought one spring after refurbing it and nearly fell over and crushed myself! This after riding/ racing my RZ350 for a few years – I couldn’t believe the weight of this thing! An interesting bike, but one I sold and moved onto others for my collection.
+1, but…. these things could go 100+ mph ALL DAY long.
