It’s hard to break old habits, and Yamahas keep popping up on the East Coast.
Today’s bike exhibits the spirit of the early ’90’s. We had already experienced the creativity explosion of the ’80’s, and now we were looking to see what would come next. This color scheme says, “Let’s try this, why not?” And you either love it or hate it. As a whole, the bike represents a key transition point between the 1980s superbikes and the hyper-focused machines of the late ’90s.
This bike is ‘tinker-friendly’ which Red loves since he likes to wrench his own bikes. (Maybe I should make a ‘tinker-friendly’ T-shirt for him, lol.)
Looking at BaT, two of these sold in 2023 for under $5k, but they had over 25k miles. Under 10k miles raises eyebrows when a bike is over 30 years old. Under 5k miles raises eyebrows and turns heads.
And for those of you that hate the color scheme, you have to admit that you still like to see this spirit of play and curiosity. How boring our niche would be if every bike was similar.
Good luck to the buyer and seller!
Oh – and by the way….
May 29th is the 17th birthday/anniversary for the site! (Thank you Dan for the reminder.) Perhaps a new t-shirt design should come out this summer. I’m not sure if Tinker-Friendly will go over well 😉 If anyone has a good idea for a t-shirt design, email us – riding[at]rare-ones.com.

Love the color scheme. Always thought the ’94 and ’95 were the best looking FZRs. I’ve actually got three of the ’94 model, but planning on selling one soon. Only bought the third one because the plastics were in amazing condition and will be swapping with a much lower miles FZR1000. Also, after having searched for many years, realized finding any fairing pieces in nice shape was not going to happen. I get that the wild color schemes of the 90s are not for everyone but collectors really do value them as they attract a fair amount of attention. No other bike I own gets more comments when I’m out on it.
Happy Birthday RSBFS! Really enjoy this site and reading all the comments and your take on the bikes. Only wish more enthusiasts would contribute as there is a lot of knowledge out there I would greatly love to learn from.
