The Sport Production Special is a real “fluoriserie”. While it doesn’t have all the special parts like the later 996R and 998R models, it was an homologation special to participate at WSBK racing..
Looking at the current situation of Ducati on world race tracks, the 916 series has all the credential to become perhaps the most iconic Duc ever. The actual Desmosedici is fighting with the Aprilia RSV4 powered ART bike of Espargaro in MotoGP and the revolutionary Panigale seems not to work at all, or be far too young in its development.
The 999 was very successful on the WSBK tracks but it’s futuristic looks didn’t deliver a matching aesthetics. Anyone who owned a 748, 916 etc. is also aware of how the whole design of the bike was made to ease the changes and modifications that might be required to set the bike ready for a track or a race day. It wasn’t only damn sexy, it was practical for track days as well !
Let’s hear it from the seller himself:
When it comes to sport bikes, few are as iconic as the Ducati 916/996/998 series. Designed by Tamburini (who later went on to design the gorgeous MV Agusta F4 series) and sporting a 90 degree, liquid cooled, fuel injected, four valve per cylinder (with Desmo actuation) twin, this series of bikes was for more than just show.
The SPS – or Sports Production Special- edition was an evolution of the 916 (with a 996cc capacity it offered 20+ HP over the standard engine). The power plant remained largely unchanged from the previous generation bike, but with lighter weight components (such as the new Marchesini 5-spoke wheels) and more performance oriented suspension now completely sourced from Ohlins, the SPS was a higher-spec bike all around when compared to the standard 916.
With titanium conrods, larger frame tube diameter with thinner walls, wider frame/larger carbon airbox, P8 “big brain” ECU, higher compression heads, hotter in/out cams, lightened engine internals, full Termignoni with carbon cans, and Ohlins/steering damper, the SPS was the top of the Ducati line in its day.
This is a rare and beautiful specimen.
This Bologna built bike was intended for the European market but was imported for the seller by Moto Cinelli.
This bike has not been ridden or registered and is in near museum quality with any inspection/viewing welcome.
Any Questions happily answered.
Are these discs new enough for you ?
At 20.000 £ this classified ad might put some people off, especially in this period of Euro crises, but don’t be fooled, this bike will only appreciate itself in value if kept as is. And then, would you rather buy this or a Panigale S? Ducati 916 SPS brand new in the UK for sale on eBay

It’s a beautiful bike, and it’s cool that it’s been preserved. However, I do see some problems with the seller’s description. It’s obvious from looking at the pictures that the bike does not have 5-spoke wheels, the carbon airbox, or full Ohlïns suspension (shock…yes; forks & damper…no). These pieces came on later models of the SPS, but it doesn’t take much detective work to see they’re not on this one. I can’t imagine the seller is trying to pull a fast one by tricking a buyer into thinking that three-spoke wheels really have five spokes…they probably just pasted a description from an article found online and didn’t bother to review it. It’s a good lesson to anyone interested in the SP or SPS, though. There are slight changes from year to year, so do your research to see what you’re actually buying.
Good catch – noticed the same thing on the rims.
I am interested in purchasing the 916 that is new, I am a serious collector in the USA TEXAS & would like to buy the bike
