Phoenix Rising – 1994 Bimota DB2

Bimota DB2’s make only an occasional appearance on RSBFS, expected with total production of just over 400.  The Tricolore is much more rare, and this rejuvenated example is in particularly nice shape.

Bimota’s second cooperation with Ducati used their 904cc desmodue, good for 86 air-cooled hp.  Showing their usual fabrication skills, Rimini whipped up a lovely chrom-moly lattice frame and similar swingarm.  Nothing if not light, the chassis helped the DB2 stay under 375 lbs. dry.  Generously sized 320mm Brembo brakes seem to fill the 17-inch front wheel, hung in 41mm Paoli forks.  Out back the Öhlins shock does it without a complex linkage, relying on a progressive rate spring for control as forces increase.  Fiberglass fairings revealed more than the DB1, and kept things easy to get to plus light.

Sounds like this DB2 was on ice for a while and returned to service last fall.  The tail tidy looks good and retains most of the protection from the swingarm-mounted fender.  Not so sure about the lack of turn signals but they should be easy enough to replace if the new owner desires.  New master cylinders for brakes and clutch are a nice touch.  I’m almost thinking repaint but there’s no comment on such in the eBay auction:

Properly stored (fluids drained, cylinders fogged, etc.) here in the dry desert in Phoenix since 2013. This past fall, I decided to go through it and get it ready for our winter riding season. I had new timing belts installed and a valve adjustment performed by the well-known Tom Hull Ducati (Tom is a former Ducati race mechanic). I had Tom pull the top end for inspection and he replaced one intake valve and guide and pronounced everything else in top shape. I did a compression check once all was back together and my gauge says 160psi in both cylinders so very good compression. I also replaced the rear master cylinder with a stock Brembo unit as the old unit was in need of a rebuild, and it wasn’t much more to just buy a new one. Brake and clutch fluids are new (lines flushed) and a complete oil and filter change performed. Carbs were rebuilt with new diaphragms, needles, seats, etc. I also installed a new battery. Then I ruptured a disc in my back and have been unable to ride the bike comfortably since, so it’s time for it to go.  

The bike is mostly stock with a few tasteful and functional upgrades. These include radial Brembo master cylinders for the clutch and front brake along with billet reservoirs and Kevlar lines. The engine was treated to a vented clutch cover and carbon timing belt covers. Bimota offered carbon mufflers as an upgrade option, and I believe this bike came with them from the factory (they were there when I got it). Rear view mirrors were replaced with carbon look ones (a pair of stock ones that I sourced are included) and the rear fender/license plate assembly was replaced with a rear fender eliminator “kit” (both done before my ownership). The front and rear turn signals had also been removed but the wiring and connectors for them are still there if you want to add some back (I do not have the originals). 

The bike comes with its original Bimota keys for ignition, gas cap and seat lock. It also comes with its Bimota tool kit, Factory Owner’s Manual and factory rear stand (with both original thru pin and beautiful custom stainless side pins. I have copies of the original service and parts manuals for the bike as well. I also have a few spares including an extra headlight, an extra new K&N oil filter, and some miscellaneous bits and pieces. 

As with all Bimotas that are actually ridden, there is some minor spider webbing around some of the fastener points. There is also a small crack in the gelcoat next to the gas cap, but it is not structural and does not go through the fiberglass. (It got dinged when I had the tank/seat cover unit off for service.) If I were to keep it, I would replace the tires as they are the same ones it came with when I bought it some years ago. Other than that, the bike is “press the button, ready to go” and currently registered here in Arizona. It looks great and runs better! 

Early Bimotas are being snatched up now that there’s a ( green ) way forward, and seller references a 2016 DB2 auction which brought $17K and Bonham’s website confirms.  More important, you can ride this DB2, any worthy Ducati indy can work on it, and parts availability should only improve.  Reviewers praised the light weight, available torque, and rake of 23.5 degrees which made it a quick handler ( and required a steering damper ).  If the condition checks out it looks to be a very rare and nicely maintained winner.

After dabbling with Japanese powertrains, Bimota formed a long-standing relationship with Ducati, and used the 904cc desmodue in several designs. The DB4 used an extraordinary alloy trellis frame to help keep the kg’s off, updated the cams to add top end, and this DB4 has a carburetor / exhaust power kit.

The oval-section alloy frame weighs just 5 kg., and has 43mm Paoli forks in front, with alloy swingarm and Ohlins monoshock out back.  Brembo supplies the brakes, 320mm fronts with 230mm rear.  The modern-looking bodywork provides an easy seat height and was supplied with or without lowers, this owner showing off the carbon clutch cover, which complements the carbon front and rear mudguards.

This DB4 has been treated to a comprehensive performance upgrade including Moto Course exhaust, and Keihin carburetors, accomodated by an updated fuel tank.  From the Las Cruces, NM Craigslist posting –

It has the Moto-Point Performance Kit on it that consists of a handmade Corse Ti exhaust, Kei-Hin FCR Flat Slide Carbs, Air Filters, New Fuel Tank, Oil Cooler Lines, All Stainless Brake & Clutch Lines, and a few other little bits. All stock parts have been retained as you can see in the photos and come with the bike. I also installed a Ducati Corse Carbon open clutch cover and sprocket cover. It runs well and is a blast to ride, also sounds amazing!

This original-owner machine has only 6,500 and change miles, and the tri-colore paint looks great.  Fairing lowers and take-off parts are included.

The DB4 reviewed as a sharp-handling lightweight, needing just a few more ponies, and this owner has taken steps to provide them.  Very rare with only a few hundred total production, and just a handful in the U.S.  The owner asks $13,000 and can be reached via his Craigslist ad or on eBay.

See the Light! 1993 Ducati 900 Superlight #810

Location: Albany, NY

Price: $6,800 BIN

There is something refreshing about seeing a yellow Ducati, especially one with a white frame. Most of the Duc’s I see are your standard red units. Not that this is a bad thing, but this color combo set’s it self apart from the crowd. What else sets this bike apart from the rest is the SuperLight designation. The SL’s featured more carbon fiber bits, and Marvic aluminum/magnesium wheels to help bring the bikes weight down. They were also one of the first Ducati’s to be given the numbered plaque on the triple clamp.

The particular bike up for grabs is a now-stock unit, except for the exhaust. Don’t worry, the original is included. The seller states that some slight cracking has occurred on a couple parts of the fairing, but repairs and some painting have taken place to prevent further damage. There also looks to me some slight rust (spots) on part of the frame. Other than those issues, this bike sure looks clean and has only had two owners in it life.

Although not perfect, this 1993 Superlight is in excellent shape. This bike was purchased as a collectable and has been rode very sparingly.

I purchase this bike in 1996 and I am the second owner. The original owner had modified the engine…if I can remember that far back I believe he had racing carbs on and moved the battery to a different area of the bike. He also had removed the choke.

I brought it to the dealer soon after purchasing it and had everything put back to its’ original condition.

No modifications have been made since I’ve owned it. F1’s exhaust pipes are on it now. The original pipes will be included in the sale.

Some cracking can be found on the right tail section and the front fairing. Fiberglass was placed on the inside of the tail piece to prevent

it from cracking more. The front fairing was repainted due to cracking.

There is some rust on the front of the frame.

The cylinder studs have been replaced. I had the bike completely overhauled in 2006. Fluids have been changed.Battery(always on battery tender) and tires are fairly new.

I have the maintenance records for the work that has been done. The bike needs nothing other than someone to ride it.

I will do my best to answer any questions you may have.

I will say that I think this 900SL is a pretty good deal with a $6,800 BIN. We have seen slightly cleaner ones with higher miles start out at $7k+ and go up from there. I wouldn’t suspect this to last too long with a $6,800 price tag as it is still a killer bike and would make a great addition to any collection, especially if someone is collecting on somewhat of a budget. It would also make a solid daily rider for someone who wants something a little less common in the world of Ducati’s. You can check out the auction here and make it yours today!

Beautiful Bike Art- 2002 Ducati MH900e

Location: Santa Rosa Valley, California

This bike is pretty much a piece of modern motorcycle sculpture. Called the Mike Hailwood Evoluzione at Ducati it’s one of the most unique and stunning bikes built in my opinion. Just look at the swingarm. A piece of artwork in itself. At 75 hp, maybe the bike isn’t the fastest thing on the road, or the most cutting edge. But it did have super cool one-off design, solid suspension pieces and Brembo brakes. And it will sure turn heads everywhere you go.

Many a MH900e featured here on RSBFS has been a low-mile collectible bike that hasn’t been ridden much, if at all. Now, I’m not saying 1000 miles is a crazy amount of mileage, but on one these, it kind of is.

The MH900e goes for some big money. As the seller notes, they are a numbered, limited edition bike, the first bunch offered by Ducati online. They sold out in a matter of hours. Some low and zero miles models here have been offered for some seriously high prices (a pair for $995,000 anyone? Although the seller claimed half went to charity, still…). This bike is $14,500 BIN which may be a little high for a bike with 1000 miles. Other examples have been in this range, but with less mileage. I know you can’t get a whole lot less than 1000, but with bikes like these, every mile counts.

So here’s your chance if you’ve been looking. This is a beautiful bike. If you feel like you need to give it the new home it deserves, then place your bid!

2001 Ducati 996R In Georgia With 1,425 Original Miles

This is a nice looking 996R with low miles!   Located Atlanta, Georgia is a 2001 Ducati 996R with 1,425 original miles.  The seller states that this bike is in pristine, showroom, condition.  This bike has some limited bolt on modifications that are:

Carbon Heel Guards
Carbon Exhaust Guard
Carbon License plate Holder/Fender
Carbon Swingarm/chain guard
Carbon underseat tray
Carbon Termi cans
Otherwise stock

These 996R’s feature Ohlins front and rear, adjustable, suspension; Ohlins steering damper, carbon fiber fairings, Marchesini wheels and a new sandcast power plant.  These bikes also came with a race Termignoni carbon exhaust and ECU which the seller is probably referring to in the ad.  Only 500 of these were produced worldwide with 150 of those bikes being held back for special purposes.  The 996R variant is a very serious homologation machine that also comes with associated costs: The maintenance costs for this bike won’t run the same as a 996 base but you’ll be rewarded knowing you have something bred for world competition.  The asking price for this bike is $17,500; a very good price compared to the 2000 996R/SPS we posted just a couple days ago.  See this bike on Ducati.ms here.

2006 Yamaha YZF-R1 Limited Edition With 815 Original Miles

This is a close to showroom new ’06 R1 LE!  Located in Tucson, Arizona is a 2006 Yamaha YZF-R1 Limited Edition with 815 original miles.  This bike has had a full inspection and was declared to be in perfect mechanical and cosmetic condition.  Now, Yamaha released the 50th anniversary R1’s at the same time as these Limited’s were released which can cause an initial doubt as they are two very different bikes but the plastics are almost exactly the same.  The Limited Edition features Ohlins fully adjustable suspension front & rear, ride height adjustment, Marchesini wheels, slipper clutch and the uprated power of the standard 2006 model.  The LE was produced to homologate the R1 for WSB competition and actually came in a Gun Smoke for markets other than N.A with only 500 total being produced.  To understand the visual differences between the LE and 50th, you must look to the front suspension which has silver stanchions for the LE and black for the 50th; the most obvious visual change is the addition of the gold, multi-spoke, Marchesini wheels fitted to the LE.  The 50th is fitted with standard black wheels.  If you’re buying, the two have very different prices also:  The LE is, currently, hovering above $10k, in the 11-12.5k range while the 50th is down to the 5-7k depending on miles and accessories.  We posted a LE that was still in the crate that had an asking price of $12,995 which can be seen here.  While at a dealer, this current example has an asking price of $11,995 making each of those miles it has accumulated cost just over a dollar with exclusion of maintenance costs.  While it may be more beneficial for the owner of the 5oth to have the same paint scheme, if you own a LE you know that you’ve got something very special and that is all that matters.  If you’d like a modern day homologation Yamaha, see this bike on Craigslist here–and yes, this is more special than the 2010 Rossi replica.

1991 Honda NR In The United Kingdom

A genuine Honda NR for sale in the U.K.! 

Located just outside of London, is a 1991 Honda NR with 1,360 miles.  This is an official U.K. import; it was originally used by Honda as a display item and wasn’t registered until the end of 2002.  The bike comes with all manuals, books, and cards originally supplied when new.  The asking price is £105,000 which as of 02/27/10 converts to $160,126.57 and 117,740.13€ respectively.  We have only posted one NR in the past, that bike had an asking price of 45,000€–making it seem like a deal in retrospect!  The NR is an amazing piece of machinery however, much newer machinery will walk away from it but this bike is the ultimate street bike tour de force.  There were only 700 NRs produced and they are very rarely traded in the public market so you can ask what you’d like–as in this case.  The NR came with an amazing eight valves per cylinder, oval piston 90° V4 (Essentially a V8 with the cylinder walls knocked out); a traditional twin spar aluminum frame, and the most up to date suspension Honda could fit. The NR influenced many bikes to follow as, it is purported, the original drawings of the 916 were changed following Honda’s release of the NR.  It is also interesting to note that the FIM rulebook for MotoGP specifically states that cylinders must be round, the original NR750 is the reason for this I suspect.  If you have the means, I would encourage you to pick up a NR at some point as it would be hard to top being able to plop the nickel, silver, and carbon fiber ignition key on the bar after an amazing ride.

2001 Ducati MH900e on ebay

2001 Ducati MH900e #36 with low miles for sale on ebay.

The MH900e is one of my favourite Ducatis of all time, and this one – #36 0f 2000 ever made – for sale on ebay is a prime specimen with some tasteful and practical modifications done:

For sale #36 0f 2000 made for the world, most did not come to the USA.

The MH was stunning in stock form, but I felt there was room for improvement, and so I spent thousands of dollars, and countless hours to make it run and look even better….of course I saved all the original parts, even the sides of the crate as it had a graphic image of the MH painted on the side along with production number, unlike other Ducatis.

#36 has about 3500 careful miles, and is in excellent condition.

It has never been wet and always serviced by Ducati dealers in the Dallas Ft Worth area in the past where it was delivered, and spent most of its life.

I moved it last year to the pacific northwest as I completed our retirement house…I might be able to deliver it this spring to a buyer in the western half of the country, as I make one more trip to Texas for the last of our furniture, etc.

History of my mods, and why I did what I felt the factory should have.

One of the first things that bothered me after I unpacked the crate, and helped the dealer assemble, check and adjust things, was the stock exhaust and associated assembly…it was too quiet/restrictive/produced too much heat, and was way too heavy. (numerous owners have had cracking and breakage of the taillight/turn signal/license assembly attached to the exhaust) So I designed a lighter/stronger/better looking support bracket, had a friend weld it, and powder coated red to match the bike, along with tucking turn signals in the tailpiece with a smaller license plate bracket. This was made to hold the “conti-look” exhaust cans I sourced from BUB, as I liked the look and sound on my old beveldrives with original longer conti pipes.  There had to be small sections formed to mate the cans to the original header, and then I had the pieces, and black stock header “jet coated” and polished silver, which I think looks and transfers heat better.

The sound is glorious /more power/much less heat…mission accomplished, bike and rider are much happier (power on a dyno was within 1 hp of a full termi-factory optional system)

I added an Ohlins steering damper and rear shock…big improvement over stock, and at the same time a better chain , and new sprockets. The front turn signals and custom brake / clutch levers , and mirrors were Ducati optional items.  I also installed Ferracci clip-on bars for a little more comfort. The billet aluminum belt covers, and oil pressure sender cover were also sourced from a Ducati parts catalog. The little “winged-D” Ducati on the left case cover was machined by a Calif. Co.

The next change/mod was to get rid of the two batteries hanging below the tank shroud, and raise up the oil cooler from behind the front tire. To make this work required removal of the giant air box, and building a rack to hold a regular size bike battery (new Oddysey gel cell added this month) substituting two oiled foam filters, and k+n oil breather filter…like I said earlier, bike runs excellent with the new exhaust, and without the old airbox…at the same time I raised the oil cooler up to make it less vulnerable and look better, I had to have some longer braided stainless lines, and fittings made at the local airport.
