There’s very little incentive for manufacturers to use catchy or evocative names to differentiate between their competition models, compared to their roadgoing bikes, hence Honda’s slightly jumbled alphanumeric naming of their racing two-strokes. The RS250R NX5 seen here was Honda’s over-the-counter race bike developed for privateer racers. Factory outfits, on the other hand, had access to bikes like the confusingly-named NSR250 and the RS250RW, which can be a bit challenging to sort out for enthusiasts new to these machines. Specifications and details are relatively hard to come by for those of us not in the know, but this RS250R NX5 was powered by a liquid-cooled, two-stroke v-twin with slightly undersquare dimensions of 54 x 54.5mm. Up until 1993 Honda used a familiar 90° v-twin design, but this was changed in 1993 to a more compact 75° configuration. Given the small mass of the reciprocating parts, relatively low revs compared to a four-stroke, and the race-focused intent I’d expect that any increase in vibration was minimal, and considered perfectly acceptable. The result was package capable of over 90hp that weighed in at a stunning 223lbs dry.

For sale my NX5 1998, probably the finest Honda RS250R NX5 available today.

Oh my god! “Detonator new”?! This bike is being sold by a gentleman in Belgium so I guess that means it has a new ignition system? I don’t know much about Honda RS250s, but this appears to be a very meticulously-built example commissioned by a very passionate owner. I love the mechanical elegance on display here, the purposeful nature of a pure racing machine. I believe it’s been relisted a couple of times recently, so here’s hoping he finds a buyer this time around.
