A natural evolution of Laverda’s 1000cc 3CL, the company’s new 1200 was a typical reaction to 1970s emissions limitations on performance that often resulted in engines trying to claw back power lost through pollution controls through massive displacement increases. The new 1116cc engine was really just an attempt to tread water, in terms of outright performance, but the big triple remained powerful and flexible. The frame was also updated, with revised geometry for the rear shocks and new suspension components. The Mirage version of the 1200 was another special from Britain’s famous Slater Laverda. Like the Jota, it featured uprated cams and an exhaust, here fitted to the larger 1200 engine. Later bikes also featured larger valves and [mercifully] a hydraulic clutch. The Laverda Mirage 1200TS seen here was introduced in 1979 and featured distinctive sport-touring bodywork, the aforementioned larger valves, and a larger alternator. Non-Mirage versions of the TS featured less aggressive cams in the US market and a more restrictive exhaust, along with baffles in the airbox changes that were likely intended to suit the bike’s touring mission.

The 1981 Laverda Mirage 1200 stands as a bold expression of Italian engineering, style, and performance from the golden era of superbikes. A rare combination of character, craftsmanship, and thrilling performance, this bike exemplifies a time when motorcycles were built to be handcrafted, powerful, and unforgettable. With only 425 original miles, it remains almost as it left the factory, preserving its remarkable originality.
Powered by a 1,198cc air-cooled DOHC inline triple, the Mirage delivers torque, acceleration, and a growl that is unmistakably Laverda. The 5-speed manual transmission puts the rider in full control, making every ride a visceral experience. With dual Brembo disc brakes and Marzocchi suspension, it handles with confidence and precision, whether navigating tight curves or cruising open roads.
Its metallic silver paint with maroon coachlines shines with period-correct style, while the original plastics show subtle natural aging, confirming it has never been refinished. The TS-style touring bodywork adds presence and collector appeal, balancing performance with sophisticated design. The seat, controls, and cockpit remain in exceptional condition, reflecting careful preservation.
This Mirage has been recently serviced and is ready to ride or display in a collection, making it a rare low-mileage survivor that is highly desirable for collectors and enthusiasts. Every element reflects Italian craftsmanship, innovation, and the thrill of riding, giving this motorcycle enduring allure.
This Laverda Mirage 1200 TS is certainly not the prettiest Laverda, or even the prettiest Laverda triple currently for sale on eBay, but it certainly is rare, and looks to be in exceptional condition, with virtually no miles under the wheels. These are big, brutal machines, a throwback to an earlier era and if the styling looks a bit tacked-on, that’s because it obviously was. Later redesigns like the RGS attempted to move the antediluvian machine into the modern age with some success, but here the half-modern, half-classic styling is an acquired taste at best. Cool to see one for sale, but probably mostly of interest to Laverda completists…
